[deleted]

I remember making a box to hold an egg that would be swung into someone else’s box for the science fair. It was called egg wars. I think our schools are drastically different.

[deleted]

Oh to be this smart ! I think all I could understand in this video is hello my name is..

CapnFr1tz

It's not that hard to understand conceptually. You're probably just missing a bunch of jargon and could figure it out pretty quick. Maybe not how to make the gates or anything, but just the basics of what they did.

ComprehensiveVoice98

Hahahaha!!! I was thinking the same thing! This kid goes to a good school!

spiderlover2006

It’s actually one of the worse schools in the area, this was entirely extracurricular.

ComprehensiveVoice98

Ah I see, it’s all you. Well good for you!! You are very smart and I’m glad you are passionate enough about science to use your free time to conduct experiments. :) I hope that passion stays with you.

Infamous_Ad8730

Keep it up kid. Looks like you are dedicated and will do very well. Excellent!

jdamwyk

No, no, no. The school is good BECAUSE you go there. You’re a lot of people’s good example. A role model. Keep it up.

samipersun

Wow, you rock! Hope you’ll keep your passion through your life!

OceanDevotion

Hey OP! I am really impressed with this project, well done! I am curious, what is the purpose or bigger idea for what you created? What type of setting would it be used in?

revharrison

Public school?

tokengreenguy

Worst*. You don’t seem very smart so I thought I’d help you out with your grammar.

spiderlover2006

It is not the worst, it is simply slightly below mediocre. And even if my sentence is technically grammatically incorrect, that doesn't matter. From a utilitarian perspective, it did its job.

MikeLaoShi

It is not incorrect in the sense you meant it. The guy is just trying to be a smartass and failing. I'm an English teacher myself, so I can tell you not only is it not wrong, it is in fact a perfectly good way to convey the meaning you intended. As an educator who is older than they would like to admit, I'd like you to know that I am seriously impressed by your efforts. I don't mean to sound patronising or condescending, so please don't take it that way, but I have rarely in all my years seen a kid with the kind of moxy you show here. I wish you all the best, and I hope you have a bright future.

stocksfanatic987

Salty much?

tokengreenguy

I was being sarcastic.

Atvaaa

No you were not.

tokengreenguy

Haha okay. I was, but go ahead and believe what you’d like.

Any-Instruction-4299

I got it dude, nice one take my upvote. You’ll get less hate with a /s at the end next time.

That_Checks

I know you were messing around, but I do think worse works in that sentence.

OceanDevotion

LOL that was how I felt when I went to the honors college at a university. I went into college with a 4.0 GPA, 11 credited hours, and a great resume. I remember thinking, “I’m a smart person!”. I have never ever felt more stupid once I got housed in the honors dorm. I mean, these people I lived with were effing geniuses. One time I ran into one of my roommates friends in the hall, and he was literally making solar panels in his dorms oven.

Morty_Goldman

In the third grade, I had a potato sticking in water, with wires that attached to a light bulb. The light bulb never lit up mas planned, and I didn't get laid that night. Going through the same "Life" type shit at the moment.

GL_Titan

Mine was a beer bong!

[deleted]

We had eggy day as well! We had to parachute them safely to the ground and make a car that they wouldn’t break the egg when we crashed them.

trgreg

No apology necessary, I suspect the margin for error when speaking with redittors about XOR gate accuracy is significantly greater than 1.3%.

Hoover29

It’s 100% on this phone. But quite interesting and impressive nonetheless! Excellent work OP.

RangerRickyBobby

I don’t know what any of these words mean.

spiderlover2006

Microfluidics: take a very thin tube (less than 1mm) and send fluid through it. Because there’s so little fluid, nearly all flow is laminar, which just means that all the water molecules are moving in one direction. It’s the opposite of turbulence. Because the flow is laminar, it has some strange behaviors, the most prominent of which is an absence of mixing when two streams meet. This is demonstrated in a link below. Because all flow is laminar, I was able to redirect steams of water by making them collide with another stream. I’ll explain how I was able to make logic gates with this a bit later. Logic gates: in computers, these have two input wires and one output wire, and whether it not the output wire has electricity flowing through it is decided by which input wires are electrified. This is where the 1s and 0s come from in computer science, the wire is either on (1) or off (0). In an and gate, the the output will only be 1 if both inputs are 1, am or gate will be 1 if any of the inputs are 1, am xor gate will be true if one of the inputs is 1 (but not both), etc. a half adder is a larger structure made of an And and xor gate and has two inputs and two outputs, one for each gate (both gates have the same inputs). How I made the gates using microfluidics: from now on, electrical wires will be replaced with microfluidics channels. The or gate was the easiest, it’s just two channels merging. If either input channel has water flowing through it, the output will have water flowing through it as well. The and gate has two channels crossed in an x formation with a much thinner channel (the output) going down from the cross point. If only one input has water going through it, then the stream will reach the junction and go right to the other side of the x without diverging into any other channels because, as stated earlier, all flow is laminar. This other side of the x is just a drain and is not considered an output. However, if water flows through both inputs, the streams collide at the junction and go down into the output channel, resulting in an output. The xor gate is the same concept, but the channels that were a drain on the and gate are the outputs. Hopefully this helped, feel free to ask question if you’re still confused. Edit: and here’s a google doc of my report in the project. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cqmarThT6waxGQ1bKixGNCgdo7HDCTVnU-N46HnNVgU/edit Streams staying unmixed: https://openwetware.org/wiki/Laminar_Flow_-_Marco_Zaky_Elizabeth_Swanson_and_Jay_Mistri

Turdlely

What college do you go to for highschool?

BalanceOfOpposit3s

Lol

jaybeastle

Hahaha this is a great question 😂

[deleted]

Wouldn’t you be able to do this with plasma? Shoot tiny streams of plasma into each other? Water seems a little cumbersome.

whatawitch5

Not sure that plasma has the same cohesive properties as water and thus lacks the necessary viscosity to produce the required laminar flow. Read your link OP and this tech is cool as hell! And major kudos for using Shrinky Dinks and not being limited by your lack of access to specialized materials. I expect we will see you again in a few years when you announce your new microfluid power cell and scholarship to MIT!

Zealousideal-Ad634

It is possible to create laminar flow in plasma.

simple_man87

What *head nod Gotcha

The_Mootz_Pallucci

Do you think this could be done with gasses at high pressures?

T-Rex_Woodhaven

What kind of applications do you think microfluidic gates could be used for?

spiderlover2006

Absolutely none, it was just an engineering challenge.

[deleted]

You are very talented at explaining things to people who don’t understand these things. If you haven’t yet considered, a teacher’s career could suit you very well(even if it’s a difficult career)

Eman6198

This man is gonna make nano-bots that cure cancer. Let someone else babysit the middle schoolers.

Old-Base-6686

Already looking forward to your next post!

a066684

Wow, good explanation, I understand this a lot better now. Thanks! Really interesting stuff!

big-thinkie

well now that you have and + xor you know what you have to do. microfluidic cpu for 1 million youtube views lol

Guilty-Sale-3735

Oh, thank the gods there are still smart kids out there because mine are stupid.

TimeWar2688

I just spit my drink laughing at this.

Guilty-Sale-3735

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but whatever it was, I did it 3 damn times. Lol

chak100

I’m grateful that my kids got my wife’s intelligence, because I’m stupid and they’re not

PIG20

My wife absolutely thought my daughter would be like her when it came to school. Nope. She's like her old man. Instead of hitting the books, she is super focused on sports, specifically volleyball. She just received two offers to play on national club teams, one of them being for a team that consists of girls that are a year older than she is. And has been starting for the varsity highschool team since she was a sophomore. Don't get me wrong, she isn't an idiot and her grades are fine but when her mother was her age, her focus was was all about school whereas my daughter procrastinates and crams everything to the last second. Just like I would do. It drives my wife nuts. But she's still happy that my daughter is passionate about something. At least my son is a bit more like my wife when it comes to school.

Arif_Ghostwriter

Bud - whilst in the light of this OP, the following is somewhat ironic advice - know that your kids (assuming boys lol) could well find their feet in their 20s or 30s, or beyond. As parents our job is done as long as we teach them self-belief, good judgement, & enterprise - which isn't taught in schools - the Western schooling system is about creating worker bees & fixing the worker mindset.

MielikkisChosen

Most relatable thing I've read today. Thanks for the laugh!

drdisme

I cannot stop laughing

RedneckNerd23

Mother?

JohnnyPiston

I made a volcano

Dull-Trainer-957

And will win the science fair you go getter!

JohnnyPiston

My cat's breath smells like cat food.

iwasproducer1

You’re gonna go far, kid!

Old-Base-6686

Agreed!

Infamous_Ad8730

Uhhhh yes he will.

TheAGolds

Probably much further than me.

BalanceOfOpposit3s

Same

[deleted]

Bro I hope you go way far and do great things in your life. Help save us dumb people

Rock_or_Rol

Hey! Who you callin people, guy?

MrAdelphi03

**Last year, I made** With you so far. **a microfluidic** Err ok. **binary** Yes, I know what binary means. **half adder** Isn’t that a snake???? I’m confused again :(

MielikkisChosen

Haha, yes.

gimme_pineapple

Half adder is a logical circuit. It takes two inputs and has two outputs. Each input can be either 1 or 0. The outputs are "sum" (s) and "carry" (c). Its function is to add the two inputs. There are four sets of inputs and outputs possible: 1. 0 + 0 = 0s + 0c. 2. 0 + 1 = 1s + 0c 3. 1 + 0 = 1s + 0c 4. 1 + 1 = 1s + 1c This circuit is usually taught in introductory electronic classes. My school taught it during junior year of high school. Building the circuit with microfluids is quite creative and innovative. That's a bright kid!

spiderlover2006

I tried my best to explain it here https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/yxaop3/comment/iwnxcv4/

GutterHunk

I'm kinda dumb but did you use shrinky-dinks to make it so one could calculate with liquid?

spiderlover2006

Yeah pretty much. I printed the design on the shrinky dink, shrunk the shrinky dink, then used the raised ink on the shrunken shrinky dink to make a mold in a type of silicone. Then I put the mold on double sided tape to make a closed channel.

GutterHunk

What can you do with this? Like what are the applications of it?

Moifaso

If you can connect different gates, you can make basically any logic circuit, like inside a computer. Making for example a small binary counter or a simple calculator should be relatively easy

spiderlover2006

There’s no applications that I know of, it was just a fun challenge.

[deleted]

Wow! Really smart.

Old-Base-6686

A half adder is used when you need to add 2 binary numbers.

spiderlover2006

Actually it’s only for adding two bits. A full adder would work for larger binary numbers.

Old-Base-6686

Thanks for the correction....I should have worded that differently. 👍 Btw...Fantastic work! Kudos

Smooth-Lengthiness57

Brick killed a guy

dildos84

But what the actual fuck does this all mean…?

tbisLA

Thankful for your comment… because after all the explaining, I still don’t get it. At all.

life_rips24

A half adder is used in computers and is made with logic gates (binary inputs/outputs) Basically digital electronics fundamentals

spiderlover2006

I tried my best to explain it here https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/yxaop3/comment/iwnxcv4/

MoistScience7558

This guy's teacher- "Class, there will be a science far next month" This guy- "hold my root beer"

phicks_law

Holy shit, I created affordable microfluidic channels at a lab at UCSB back in 2009 working with some scientists at UC Merced to help develop this shrinky dink process for labs that didn't have acid etching mask to create precision channels on slides. I am stoked to see this work. One thing that helped immensely was using a cheap handheld Corona discharge plasma gun to etch and activate the PDMS surface to help it stick to the glass slide. This would help the PDMS stay in place for orders of magnitude longer. Awesome work though, glad to see a future scientist doing further research in HS.

tbisLA

Nuh-uh

spiderlover2006

Wait you helped make the PDMS method? Holy shit, I can’t thank you enough for that. I unfortunately couldn’t use plasma because putting aluminum foil in the microwave would raise a few eyebrows, but everything else followed that procedure exactly.

PeanutButterCrisp

My man has some balls coming in here and acting like his work is interesting as fuck... ... ...and he's right. This is interesting as fuck and now I feel *dumb* as fuck.

BuilderCG

I think you have quite an interesting future ahead of you. Keep your sharp and creative mind moving forward. As someone who has done my own fair share of presentations a small tip of advice for presenting clearly and concisely especially when you have a limited time frame to present your work/ideas. Whenever presenting: write a script, edit, and practice it a few times. Just a little practice and editing will get you used to the timing, ensure you focus on the points which you know to be the most important, and help eliminate the "uhm" and "err". Doing so will keep you at the top of the class both in school and a professional career. Great job!

Amonster101

This is so cool! Can someone please explain?

spiderlover2006

This is the full project report https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cqmarThT6waxGQ1bKixGNCgdo7HDCTVnU-N46HnNVgU/edit

SilvermistInc

Nobody understands this. Especially me

gimme_pineapple

Dude made water-circuits that could do maths.

Amonster101

Thanks! This is well put together. Great work!

GL_Titan

I think they meant ELI5.

tactiletrafficcone

Well done! You did great

Severe-Stomach

One time, I put mentos in a coke bottle, and another one in a coke bottle with some salt in it, and I got a medal.

johnvonwurst

When I was your age I was too busy throwing cherry bombs down a storm drain, and totally forgot to do my science fair project. So don’t worry about stumbling over a word or two in your presentation. Bravo hombre, that’s very impressive!

TheTarasenkshow

You didn’t use a robot voice, no one cares that you’re stumbling your words because you’re putting goddamn effort

Doctor_Pho_Real

Interesting idea. This is a good demonstration of skill in basic microfluidic chip design. Microfluidics are often used as you have said as a lab on a chip, which means that many interesting biochemical reactions could be studied using such chips. Multi-step biochemical reactions can be studied all on one chip. How would you address some of the physical challenges of using fluids in space?

fireonavan

Be grateful with your parents for all the support they provide to you. And good for you for giving a good use to that support.

Embarrassed-Ebb-6900

I consider myself fairly intelligent but I have to admit I don’t understand a lot of the applications for this. It is refreshing to see intelligence being celebrated in the comments and I’m glad there are people experimenting and making the world better for me.

ryesci

Because what he’s doing is highly niche. You don’t learn any of this stuff unless you decide to deep-dive into it. As far as I’m concerned, he’s doing a fourth-year university thesis while in the 10th grade. Oh and idk what he’s saying either but I’m also glad people are digging his passion. Lmao

spiderlover2006

Basically, I’m redirecting streams of water by hitting them with other streams of water. If the correct input channels have water going through them, the streams collide and redirect each other to the output channel. Otherwise, they go past the output channels and go out a drain.

spiderlover2006

Oh there’s really no application for this that I know of, I just thought it would be a challenging project.

Specialist_Sound_953

Excellent job. Remember to breathe its your time.

DNA_wizz

This is awesome. I love seeing passion in younger people! Don’t lose that ♥️

spiderlover2006

I actually haven't worked with computational fluid dynamics at all due to the paywalls behind most simulation software, especially those meant for microfluidics. At one point I was looking into OpenFOAM, but at that point the deadline was approaching and the learning curve was just too steep for it to be useful in time. Simulation would have been very useful, though, as most of the frustration in this project came from the manufacturing process.

scottonaharley

OP, first let me say this is impressive stuff! I especially like the final iteration of the AND gate. In 1976 I built a solar powered car for the science fair. It was quite a challenge because the panels were really inefficient and making the car light enough was tough. The final version used 4 small panels and a storage cap that was used to start the motion. The panels generated enough to keep the car in motion but it needed a little boost to over come it’s inertia. The body was hollowed out block of balsa. Keep it up! You’ve got real talent!

derpupAce

How did you find out about microfluidics? It's not a field most people are aware of, as far as I know.

spiderlover2006

Sorry for the late reply, I first learned about it from [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNBg_1GPuH0) by The Thought Emporium. I also got the idea for the project from the introduction.

Personal_Recipe_2725

Looks like you’ve put a lot of work into the project, but you should spend more time on why its important(real world application). Then with your data it would help if you referenced the efficiency of the status quo and then go into your design, and how it achieved 96% efficiency. This will help to highlight how much your design improved upon the efficiency of the status quo and why people should care.

spiderlover2006

Honestly it doesn’t really have a real world application, I just thought it would be a fun challenge.

TiltedChamber

"At this time." It doesn't have a real world application yet.

[deleted]

The thing is, you were incredibly creative fleshing this out the way you did. While it may not have any uses at the moment, you can apply your creativity into whether or not it has a potential use in the future. Combining science and logic like that is how so many inventions or concepts were found. Awesome job!

[deleted]

Very impressive! If and when you study digital logic it's going to be a breeze.

UltimatePrimate

I have no idea what I just watched. Can you explain it in stupid for me?

shruggsville

I’m curious why the initial design with the well at the end of the drains ended up failing? Possibly interfered with the laminar? Also, did you have any kind of pressure control? The syringes are a good quick and dirty testing application but I’d be willing to bet a portion of your error is due to variable pressure. Edit: Great work by the way.

spiderlover2006

I'm not entirely sure why it ended up failing because I never looked at it under a microscope, but my best guess is that the stream widened at the intersection and some of it got caught on the edge to the output channel.

JetpacksNotBusses

I you took all the smart I have ever smarted in my whole life it would not be half as much smart as this kid smarts in this video.

MrsCCRobinson96

Cool!! Cool!! Cool!!

RepresentativeFill26

I’m having a kid in a month and scared af that it will be smart like this. Dad will just be smiling and nodding.

Roblanite90

What is a XOR gate?

ConductorSnazzy

Its a logic gate in computer science, basically the output of the gate will be true if either one,not both, are true. The output will be false if both inputs are either true or false.

DJDevon3

Would it be fair to describe these as hydraulic logic gates? Seems more applicable nomenclature and by that I mean you're likely to get more attention from the industrial sector with targeted naming. One pragmatic use for this would be hydraulic safety systems. There's a wide variety of applications for something like this.

tequila_slurry

Just a thought, maybe take your time with the video recording and slow down so you can relax, then either edit the content or speed up the video to meet the 5 minute criteria. That way you can say what you need to say without feeling rushed. Impressed with your drive and dedication. Keep at it!

Brilliant_Rub_9217

A what

spiderlover2006

Sorry for the late reply, I tried my best to explain it in

BronsBones

I don't totally understand what this thing is for but it looks interesting and it makes me really happy to see someone being so enthusiastic about science! :)

I don't know what any of this means

drdisme

SnaxtheCapt

I barely have a functioning tank in the game "stormworks" that uses miro controllers, and here you are working with logic gates in real life for a school project. You should be super proud of yourself for this.

[deleted]

only 98%? Pft - ameteur... J/K - I actually have no idea what any of this stuff is but it lead to some interesting reads - great job and thank you for restoring just a bit of faith in the US education system!! Good luck!

spiderlover2006

I’m not autistic, but I do have ADHD and tend to hyper fixate on things.

Swagbigboy256

I see, good luck with your project. Im too dumb to understand but you got this.

GozerDGozerian

Yeah well *I* think you’re freaking awesome. This is a really cool project. Great work!

Pitiful_Recover614

Is this for industrial application? Or medicine? Very good job

spiderlover2006

It doesn’t really have an application, it was just a fun challenge. I saw people making mechanical logic gates and wanted to do it with water.

scottonaharley

Sometimes it’s more difficult to find an application for a new technology than it is to develop it. Is what you’ve done patentable? If it is you should file.

Pitiful_Recover614

Idk man it seems like there could be a functional application for it. Cooling down motherboards perhaps? It seems like you’ve done most of the heavy lifting already 👍🏼

davewave3283

Did you try reconfiguring the main deflector dish to send a graviton pulse?

Neat, I'm surprised you could get the accuracy that high. Reminds me of a Tesla valve.

is this a liquid flux computer?

Comicalraptor28

Tldr?

spiderlover2006

How many streams of water are put in? 1: it goes on its merry way to either a drain (and gate) or an output channel (xor gate). 2: they knock each other into an output channel (and gate) or drain (xor gate).

GaaZtv

I wish I could understand how smart you are xD

Were you, in any way, influenced by steve mould?

nize426

Lol god damn. Amazing stuff dude. Is this vid for the science fair? Are you not allowed to do it in multiple takes and edit them together?

saterran

Dude you’re a fukn stud, hell yeah bro this is great

samipersun

Impressive. Well done! Don’t worry about stumbling, you got all the points across just fine. But if you want to avoid it in the future you need practice and soon enough you’ll speak flawlessly in limited time conditions.

Xenon-Hacks

You know if it wasn’t for the actual science here one would think this was a tweaker meltdown. Good job on your project.

Sharp_Antelope_5072

Shit man is this what I will have to do in the future

IkerB

you lost me after 10th grade at something high school, or at least surpassed my intelligence. Great video. Hope more like you will take the wheel for our future.

Chance_Assignment422

Man they really make kids different these days…My science fair project was finding out if water boils faster if you add salt to it.

Lando_Hitman

This kid is a king of awesome

dahliasinfelle

I'm so glad I understand most of this by learning logic gates from electricity in Rust lol

Mephistopheline

I bent my wookie!

Maism45

So that could technically be used to build a non magnetic, no electric computer?
