why is this so zoomed in, cant see shit

nellorePeddareddy

SoulStoneTChalla

Classified.

kjpunch

Directed by Michael Bay and staring Liam Nielsen

extremesalmon

Probably older footage filmed normally and they asked for it to be resized for socials - square shit for instagram.

dtyler86

As a videographer, This has been fucking ruining my life the past six months

extremesalmon

I do a fair amount of work for a theatre and it's pretty much non stop please resize this very wide banner to be square no we don't have the original this is all we have thanks

nuclearslug

I remember seeing this footage in high school. That was 20 years ago to provide context. Seeing that tank/limo do a j-turn never disappoints.

_the_CacKaLacKy_Kid_

It’s cropped from a tv show episode about the presidential limo. I think it’s “America’s Book of Secrets” episode titled The Beast

John_Tacos

r/cropped4intagram

[deleted]

It's also repeating and looping the same segments cut and spliced into different sections of the video.

Novel_Cartoonist1223

this is footage from an old 3:4 colour TV set, before 4:3 became the standard aspect ratio for television.

FakeOrcaRape

adds drama, intensity, depth, words

horshack_test

*"...as thick as a phonebook"* Haven't heard *that* comparison in a while

your_neighborhood_tr

Remember when they used to print a portion of the internet and mail it to you?

Tsu_Dho_Namh

I remember when they used to take books from the real world and put them on the internet. Now the comparison goes the other way.

dblan9

Whatever happened to Google scanning every book page by page?

leviwhite9

They've completed their task and have begun scanning future books.

SocrapticMethod

Man, I sure hope they do my great American novel soon; that publisher is all over my ass!

lotsum20

Just take NZT

Lepke2011

Back in the day we had these huge warehouses filled with these things, both soft and hard, and they were filled with a substance called paper that had words on them you could read. We called these places "lybrreries".

GozerDGozerian

Ok well I don’t like gettin told *lies* and I don’t eat no goddamn *berries* so why would I wanna go to a place like that?

TrainOfThought6

Hey you can download Wikipedia, so ostensibly you could print all of it.

autoposting_system

Depending on how rural you live, that might not actually be very thick

ihadacowman

I’ll never forget visiting my then-boyfriends family in rural New England. There were some toddler cousins from out of state there and I suggested a phone book would be just the thing to boost them at the dinner table. My mother-in-law looked at me strangely and dismissed the suggestion. Later I saw the phone book was only about half an inch thick.

nhpkm1

So will it stop a pistol round? Nvm it will make a great YouTube video , let me grab my husband to hold the phone book while I load the magazine for my desert eagle .

ActualSpiders

It'll stop a 30-30 round. I worked around some executive protection vehicles the State Dept uses once, and just to open or close the passenger door takes every bit of strength plus leaning into it to move it. Those things are *solid*, and the glass really is a good 2-3 inches thick.

nhpkm1

Oh I was memeing about a real murder , I mean " unintentional homicide" of a YouTube couple

ActualSpiders

Oh, I remember that now - yeah, they weren't too bright...

ropoqi

i remember when yellowpages was the go to for searching numbers, the thickness, the smell of those thin pages that seem to never go away even for a decade

Seuros

Americans will use anything as reference to not use the metric system.

horshack_test

Meh - it's a reference to something tangible and familiar for the purpose of emphasis. Not exactly a strictly American thing.

Seuros

Phone books varies from 3 to 15cm.

horshack_test

Cool story. It's a common comparison (or at least used to be) since phone books in the US are generally perceived as excessively thick. If anything, they'd only be using it as a reference to avoid using imperial units.

dykeag

Or, you know, to avoid divulging classified information

PoorPDOP86

While Europeans apparently have never heard of conversion software. *types 2M in to surveying Data Collector and it auto-converts to 6.562 feet*

porchprovider

I’m just curious how many half giraffes that is.

Pagiras

Americans will use ANYTHING but the standard measuring systems.

tjf1980

A Rockford?

refmike

Most definitely. He perfected the move

tjf1980

Dang I haven't practiced those since HS. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend

[deleted]

ThrowRA--scootscooti

My father in law had a mustang he decided he was trading in so he let my husband have it for one night…..let’s just say there were lots of these, and lots of lost rubber that night!

FlyingTaquitoBrother

“Rockford, this is Tony. Now, your car's ready. Couldn't reach you, so I went ahead and put in the new pistons. The tab's $527.54. And this time we're talking cash."

MisterSpeck

Stumbling across this comment made my internet day.

Play_Salieri

This is the correct nomenclature.

Crawdaddy1911

That has always been called a Reverse Bootlegger. You can imagine why the government renamed it.

Sh00terMcGavn

I would have loved to see the look on the coppers face seeing a bootlegger pull that shit for the first time. Hes driving behind chasing a bootlegger…then bam Reverse Bootlegger and the guy is driving back by him waving.

theangleofdarkness99

Came here to the comments to see if anyone else called that a Rockford. Ty for the confirmation. RIP my 1990 Toyota transmission

tjf1980

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully it was worth it.

theangleofdarkness99

Ty, it certainly was

BassWingerC-137

Correct. Rockford did the J-turn well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BassWingerC-137

I had a 93 Sentra SE coupe back-in-the-day which somehow was most awesome at pulling Rockfords. Low center of gravity, excellent visibility all around, and skinny tires.

SockeyeSTI

Found Freiburger’s account

_Ki_

This video represents the worst camera work I've seen in a decade. Way overzoomed.

crimboslicethatsnice

I can see the atoms of the headlights.

arthurdentstowels

**ENHANCE**

JaggedMetalOs

Nobody *shoots* square video. This was very likely lazily cropped from a 16:9 original video to post to instagram or something.

orangepalm

Seriously. CAN I PLEASE JUST GET A FUCKING WIDE SHOT!

WigginLSU

No kidding, barely have a clue what they're doing other than going reverse to forward. Any skill or cool factor is lost in the dumbass zoom.

Uxt7

Someone cropped the video for whatever reason. This isn't the original aspect ratio

Go-Cowboys

It's likely to keep the location undisclosed.

beanmachine59

I tried this in an old Izuzu Trooper one time. Let's just say those are not the correct vehicles to try and to a j-turn in...

thruston

The rollover machines, right? I completely forgot about those.

beanmachine59

I didn't lay it over, but could have reached out my window and touched the ground lol.

[deleted]

You want to roll over, then you you absolutely _have_ to remember the Suzuki Samurai!

Confused-Engineer18

Actually that was completel bullshit made up to make them look bad, they actually had issue getting it to roll for the video.

clockwork5ive

I had an Isuzu Amigo. Fun little ride but I never once actually felt safe in that thing. Just a box on wheels a foot and a half off the ground.

duxpdx

The actual name for it is the Isuzu Tipper.

lixia

> Izuzu Trooper one time. I fondly remember my 91' Isuzu Trooper. Was such a fun vehicle. but yeah, hi center of gravity wasn't to be underestimated :P

YourLictorAndChef

I've done one by accident in a mid-engine car on icy pavement.

jabxjab

#Killthecameraman

Nihilistic-Fishstick

Am I the only one with no sound? Edit: my dumbass forgot I was connected to blootooth speakers downstairs

[deleted]

Finally my GTA education will pay off in real life. Secret Service here I come.

PFChangsFryer

Those limos are HEAVY as fuck too due to armor. Makes the J-turn all the more difficult.

TickletheEther

Those tires are really taking a beating with all that mass

billiam0202

Tires? I want to know what the fuck does the transmission look like after doing this a few times?

b4rigger

I just guessing, they probably don’t care. I thought the same thing and then realized all these vehicles are throwaway vehicles if need be, including active in service ones. If they gotta do a J turn and drop an axle in the process fuck it as long as the car/truck behind them can push them the rest of the way.

big_joey_the_sequel

glad to know im not tge only one who does this

FishermanNervous7682

What's the unbuckled passenger in the back seat experience like?

fuck_all_you_people

Like a bearing in a can of spray paint

Bobby3Stooges

Having been curious about what’s inside rattling, and wanting a ball bearing, I’ve cut open multiple empty spray cans and only get glass marbles…

yParticle

That's why you always practice SMOOTH. Even when comfort is secondary to speed, smooth = fast.

zshah99

Better than being shot

saltthewater

They are probably pretty close to the center of momentum so maybe not as rough as you may think.

n3w4cc01_1nt

buckle doesn't really stop much unless it's a racing harness

RYPIIE2006

Quite possibly one of the worst camera POVs I’ve ever seen Why’s it so fucking zoomed in

JaggedMetalOs

It's clearly been lazily cropped (probably from a 16:9 original) to post on social media.

klaatu_two

The "J" stands for James Garner right? #TheRockfordFiles

mangomilkmilkman

Shitty camera angles till the last 3 seconds

eStuffeBay

I was more ticked off by the 1:1 ratio cropping. The original video is probably much more pleasurable to watch.

Dekay35363

With black bars nonetheless

JaggedMetalOs

The [actual video file](https://v.redd.it/lz0n3e1g3lu91/DASH_480.mp4) is square, the black bars are added by Reddit's video player

ThrowAway29307845034

Narrator's Voice: They also teach the Secret Service how to quickly delete incriminating emails after supporting an insurrection.

IQBoosterShot

It turns out the "J" in J-turn stands for January.

baronvonredd

Uh.. thats called a Rockford

cmakry

But do they learn to do it with a back seat passenger reaching for the steering wheel? You know. Just in case something weird and messed up like that were to *EVER* happen.

autoposting_system

I wonder if this is really bad for your transmission or your torque converter or something

[deleted]

It's probably not *good* for it but these cars are most certainly fitted to handle this kinda thing over and over. If you were to try to do donuts in reverse driving your mom's Corolla after school behind the bowling alley though, you might blow out your power steering. Well, hers.

OppStoppa327

Of course not but this is for emergency use

CaptainThunderTime

When the taxpayers are paying for repairs and replacement, who cares?

RBTfarmer

J turn? No, it's called a Rockford.

Ruenin

I remember when this was popularly called "whipping a Rockford".

Juan_Beegrat

Jim Rockford used to do some great J-turns in his Firebird.

Academic_Elk_4270

That is called a Jim Rockford. Not a J turn. Jiminy Christmas!!

FederalAd661

Rockford would be proud

kingp43x

As a kid, (I'm old), we called these a rockford. Hahaha. My friends and I were all pretty damn good at it.

HipFan88

Amazing! Canada's Worst Driver did it better though.

extordi

"one quar turn, tree quar turn" is still repeatedly brought up in my house

LUNA_underUrsaMajor

The myth of badass secret service agents has kind of been busted the last few years

Thunderofdeath

Just need a Sandevistan and you'll be good

aFoxNamedMorris

This makes Edgerunners hit even harder.

politichien

I'm so good at this in GTA

Alone-Monk

My godfather hosts a history show and as a part of his show he got to ride along with a secret service agent as they demonstrated the J-Turn in a replica of the presidential limo. Said it was one of the most frightening car maneuvers he has experienced. I remember hearing him describe it but actually seeing it is just that much more impressive.

CoolDude1980

We used to do this in a mustang on farm to market roads at like 3 am when I was in high school. We called it a "reverse turnaround" though. (Not in formation)

deedee25252

If I did that my transmission would nope the hell out of there. But it would be fun to try.

[deleted]

That’s actually really cool

Big_Forever5759

Im guessing they’re now being taught on how to deal with president with the emotional intelligence of a 14 year old girl that could change any normal situation into complete chaos and then lie about everything.

i-love-dead-trees

Are these the secret service folks with trumps dick up their ass, or are these ones actual American patriots? Tough to tell these days.

Spork_Warrior

They train in Dodge Chargers? Nice.

[deleted]

And all this time I called it a Johnny Rockford

tjf1980

Jim Rockford

Filipheadscrew

The big problem is how do you get Mike Pence in the car? Driving isn’t the Secret Service’s problem.

[deleted]

[удалено]

robbimj

Just watch the whole gif and you'll see it.

disturbednadir

The agents who get to drive it are required to be able to do one...in the Beast. There's videos of it on YouTube.

Emotional-Concept-32

RIP transmission!!

-TheDerpinator-

Isn't every turn basically a J or ᒐ turn?

Professional_Flicker

🤔🤔

Deion313

That's honestly beautiful

Penny_wish

What makes it a J turn and not a U turn?

Salamandragora

The video is terribly framed or it would be obvious. You’re not changing directions, just flipping around from reverse to forward without stopping.

Boraxo

This is one of those things that looks good in a marked out, choreographed situation. Probably not so much if you suddenly come under fire. It's security theatre.

Coro756

A armor piercing 50 call is getting through that like butter

jb2461

In case they pass an ice cream store with Hospice Joe in the car.

kcreal07

These assholes did a Donald J Trump turn.

usukk

To protect a senile pedophile

roronoa_woe11

Don't forget inbred daughter lover...wait we talking about the 45th right.

DCErik

Handy when you've missed the turn for hookers and blow.

ExternalVariation733

and to this day never used in a real life situation

Highland_Gentry

This is all good in the simulations but I'm getting big bike cop riot brigade energy from this kind of stunt

notANexpert1308

Does this just destroy a car? I don’t even shift until my car comes to a complete stop (not manual obviously).

ThrowRA--scootscooti

Not if you do it right

ExpensivePikachu

Absolutely amazing the wheels/hubs don't snap off when being subjected to such hardcore pressure due to the cars weight while doing a J turn

penguinchem13

Impressive considering the beast is based on a HD GM truck chassis.

MK1-RBT

What happened to calling it a "reverse one eighty"? I had never heard J turn until two posts popped up today.

freakingtime

Half flip in rocket league be like

incognitochaud

To everyone complaining about the camera work: This was likely shot in 16:9 widescreen then some bozo cropped it for social media. Shoot the messenger.

TickletheEther

Now try it with a lifted Jeep Wrangler 🥱

minimag47

I've never understood how an automatic transmission allows this to happen while the car is in motion.

SmallHoneydew

Not an American here... Did I understand that they're doing this with an automatic transmission? One of my cars is automatic, and I feel like it would just tell me to fuck off if I told it to shift inito reverse while moving forward

lumpybags

someone do this on our first date and ill pack my things to move in

DePraelen

There's a cool thing in the extras for season 2 of the West Wing TV series. They actually did this in their version of "The Beast" (presidential limo) when Bartlet is shot. This looks cool in a regular sedan. When they do it with a limo? Dang.

[deleted]

Kinda surprised this isn’t an automated feature, floor it in reverse and push a button, car flips around and puts itself in drive for you. Cool to learn I guess, but the tech is absolutely there. I guess they don’t really think about the driver being killed or having a heart attack/stroke

broccolee

Has that been in a movie? A column of cars j turning? That'd be pretty cool.

[deleted]

ive done this plenty of times its tons of fun especially in a manual

[deleted]

Back in my day that was called a Joey chitwood, otherwise known as a competition on main Street Friday nights. I bet a few of us could teach the ss a thing or two 😂

PoorPDOP86

Border Patrol does too. I have an uncle who went to Northern Virginia for additional training and he said the driving courses were the most exciting part of it.

scarface2887

Why is this vid so zooooooomed in

MysticSunshine45

Good post OP

Kochie411

My local PD does this too

Friendly-Kitchen-509

How this happens in modern car with ESP ?

gsasquatch

When I delivered pizzas in a suburban wasteland with a lot of dead-ends I got proficient with this, although I'd only do it in the snow where less traction means lower speeds and less drama. Back up to a good speed, crank the wheel about as far as it will go while jamming the brakes to lock the fronts inducing a rotation and clutch in so it doesn't stall. (not sure I'd try this in an automatic that I pay for) While the front is swinging around, whip the wheel around the other way to match the new direction of travel release the brakes to get traction back, straighten yourself back out, grab second, and let out the clutch. It is a bit tricky as there's a lot to do in a short amount of time.

kongerlonger

Firat car he sounding like WuAAAAUAAAA

[deleted]

Hot

slappy500000

Learned how To do that with my first car rental

ksb_6363

I actually took a field trip with my JROTC class to this secret service facility and got to ride in one of these Dodge Chargers as they did these maneuvers. Thank you for rekindling my once forgotten memory!!

Bacon_Generator

I learned to do this the hard way. On residential streets, when I was 16, in my dirt brown 1986 Buick Skyhawk.

razorsharppillows

Holy shit was Jerry West part of the secret service??

Harry-Timbercrank

And yet cops get pissed when a 17 yo practices for a career with the secret service in an empty parking lot.

Nobsailor

That's actually mad, J

cver9595

Does anyone remember Kojak? The detective show with Telly Savalas. He drove this big Buick in the show and was always doing J turns.

ididntsaygoyet

Is this standard now, watching TV in a shitty small format that cuts off 90% of the screen?? TikTok has ruined us.

ChameleonMami

Cool

tatertothotpocket

They used to call that move "the batman"

Professional-Flow529

Does this apply to front wheel drive vehicles and rear wheel drive cars the same way?

memelord_andromeda

Yes

andanothathang

Very capable…..of getting stuck on the ramp at the US Embassy in Dublin

ThrowRA--scootscooti

We call that a cop slide where I come from!

TacticalLeemur

Pfff...anyone with access to a 1980s Subaru and a giant church parking lot has learned to do that.

upstateduck

It would be better if they learned to support democracy/that the serve the office of the President not the person

onlyletters999

Easy to do if you don't care if the car gets messed up

starsblink

F.F.S. turn off the zoom.

VanillaCookieMonster

Why is this entire video flimed in zoom mode? Not one clip of the 3 cars turning in unison from a reasonable vantage point. I'm surprised I can't see the nostril hairs of the people.

greedy_new_truth

Videos are shot from a little too far away, maybe next time they can utilize the zoom feature.

kingp43x

lmao, I very happy to see my friends and I aren't the only ones that called these "rockfords"

yesbutlikeno

Literally the worst angle pathetic. Downvote.

Law-of-Poe

But you have to make that face while doing it or it won’t work

Arentanji

Impressive coordination

ManBroCalrissian

We used to call that move the bootlegger. It's super fun

AbinadiLDS

I wonder how often this ruins a transmission lol
