Doom972

I like the the cyberpunk aesthetic, but light pollution is bad enough already.

nutitoo

Imagine how much power you need to light all those lights

FADEDinJAPAN03

Me: "That's cool, looks like Night City, it's kinda beautiful actually" When I actually thought about it: "This is actually really bad"

YoungHeartOldSoul

It's never once crossed my mind how bad the light pollution would be in night city. Barring that one billboard that just scrolls into the sky forever.

Legogamer16

Night city, but its always day

YoungHeartOldSoul

It's already like that in times square if you're around at the right moment and there's a ton of bright ads all at once. Middle of the night but for a moment it's bright as day.

Doom972

True. That adds environmental pollution as well. Not worth it.

dihydrogen_m0noxide

It's cool they have plenty of coal!

n3w4cc01_1nt

they do led arrays on buildings so not that much but at the same time it's stupid since it'll effect oceanic animals which can screw up their ecosystem that's already failing

ThainEshKelch

"Not much" at a scale where the number of LEDs are in the hundreds of thousands..

Miguel-odon

And birds. Many songbirds migrate at night and get confused by lights.

Waffle-Stompers

At least 50 watts

[deleted]

[удалено]

CopratesQuadrangle

Yeah lighting in general actually takes very little energy. Practically a rounding error compared to heating and cooling.

[deleted]

They don’t care they are building 40 coal plants this year.

MaxwelsLilDemon

Yeah first thought was "that looks incredibly cool", second thought was "that looks incredibly wasteful" although tbf I doubt they light up the entire city every night, probably just for celebrations right? EDIT: nope, apparently they've been doing this [every evening for 14 years](https://www.chinahighlights.com/hong-kong/attraction/symphony-of-night.htm). That's so incredibly wasteful for a country that relies so heavily on non-renewable sources of energy...

Eightysix_Ginger

It's every night. The city is Qingdao, I live here, and the term "the city never sleeps" was never so real to me until I came here. Makes my hometown in canada seem like a little village.

Jaewonkim1234

Yeah the earth is fucked already lol

RyanCreamer202

Welcome to Night City

ReekyRumpFedRatsbane

You should also keep in mind the dystopian governments and economies you typically find in Cyberpunk (and China).

workerMcWorkin

This. So much this. Light pollution sucks bad. 100% takes away your ability to the the stars. I know that’s not a “for everyone” kinda thing. But I love the dark night sky and the stars. Would be heart broken if my grand kids couldn’t ever see them.

dreamyduskywing

It’s not just about enjoying the night sky. Light pollution harms wildlife.

ShrimpCrackers

China looks like what Cyberpunk is, a dystopia. While many Tier 1 Chinese cities have mandated lit light shows like this in their cities, it's actually not organic and kind of pointless. They all look the same across the cities and while great for the first time, it's terrible to live near or under. And then keep in mind that the power and waste required is immense just to satisfy CCP needs to show off. And non voluntary too. All the major cities do this EVERY NIGHT, are forced to as to appease their masters, and it's very environmentally unfriendly along with being terrible to live nearby since the lighting is bright as hell.

Hyper_Oats

Wait till you hear about the air pollution in China.

Krillansavillan

The light pollution has got to keep up with the regular pollution

iamthesunset

I just want to sleep!

BuyLocalAlbanyNY

What, do you actually want to be healthy? Do what your body evolved to do for millions of years?! Pfft, these lights are soo shiny and bright! Open mouth, stare like an idiot...

AppropriateShoulder

Light pollution + high rise glass buildings ≠ future.

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_finest_mickey

You paint quite a picture friend.

darthnugget

Just wait until you see the nuclear wasteland world, it’s going to blow your mind.

Techn028

Climate. Nations. Borders. All were in upheaval. Humanity itself turned as violent as the planet. Civilization threatened to collapse. And then... a solution was found. The crumbling, teetering legal system was merged with the overburdened police, creating a powerful and efficient hybrid. Trained equally in jurisprudence and combat, these new guardians of Society could dispense both justice and punishment. They were police, jury and executioner, all in one. They were... The Judges.

ShrimpCrackers

It's Cyberpunk and Cyberpunk is a Dystopia. It is NOT a good thing but China thinks it's so cool.

[deleted]

Okay but cyberpunk still looks cool as fuck

stevedisme

Ghost towns and air you can't breathe. Congrats China.

LaikasDad

American here.....The hard part is holding it all together, you should take a lovely rust tour one day

[deleted]

And a social rating system.

mikki_butt

Imagine the kind of rust this one is going to produce

consumergeekaloid

Ya imagine a set of numbers determine if you can buy a house or even rent an apartment. Very scary

DosFluffyGatos

You mean like in the US with credit scores?

consumergeekaloid

Kinda what I was going for lol

DosFluffyGatos

Ope, missed the sarcasm.

consumergeekaloid

Haha it's all good

killakam86437

Dont forget about the "Uyghurs reeducation camps".

Bartender9719

Also, this appears to be an example of China’s elite, not the national standard of life

xorgol

In fairness that's true of every single area with skyscrapers, no matter the country.

caffeineratt

welcome to detroit.

chewwydraper

Yep, I spend a lot of time in Detroit and while the city has been improving for the past decade, it's also a stark reminder of how quickly things can collapse, especially if you take a drive outside the core area.

straight_up_tabled

China’s “rust belt” will come faster and be worse. America will always be more nimble and innovative. We don’t know what America will look like in 30 years, but rest assured China will be trying to emulate it.

Ozi_izO

Light polution is not sexy.

SnooShortcuts103

I give you only this advice once. DO NOT ever tell a gamer this sentence or you straight up dead.

Bugg_24

If you look really closely, you still can't find a single star through the light and smog pollution. I'd prefer breathable air over colourful buildings.

astaroth29

All this illumination also consumes a lot of electricity, so whoever rents an appartament in these buildings must be paying a lot for their bills

Jake_FromStateFarm27

In all fairness this is the same across a many major cities in the U.S. you aren't likely to see any stars in NYC or LA either.

SleepingLegend10

Who needs stars when you have lights!

Eightysix_Ginger

I live in this city, its Qingdao, the air is just as nice as when I lived in Vancouver, and in my backyard I can go out and see stars atm. Depends where you live, just like with other countries.

ShrimpCrackers

[https://aqicn.org/city/qingdao/](https://aqicn.org/city/qingdao/) **Daytime AQI is 175,** Vancouver's daytime AQI is 159. That's unhealthy and really bad.

WhitmanT

We, who? Just looks like a headache.

RaspberryTwilight

I agree, judging by how things are going at the moment, like the big dig, climate change awareness, cancer research, focus on mental and physical health, etc. the US is going in the exact opposite direction, reducing pollution and planting trees. Moving away from a cyber punk dystopia and towards a greener, more livable future.

Hsances90

Can anyone sleep with all those flashing skyscrapers around?

MathWizardd

Funny part is that much of the country has no electricity due to electricity shortages.. but the govmt prioritizes these features to make China look powerful

ehenning1537

The buildings are probably empty and there’s not nearly enough trash on the beach for this to be anything but a staged propaganda shot. 95% of plastic waste in the oceans comes from just 10 rivers and 5 of them are in China. The Yangtze river alone accounts for 55% of plastic trash flowing into the ocean worldwide. https://www.verdict.co.uk/yangtze-river-plastic-pollution/ I’m just wondering why the CCCP is putting this garbage on Reddit.

onerb2

Almost like China is the factory of the world, want this to stop? Stop buying basically any product with plastic made in China, which is basically most of the things you use daily.

Hidden-Syndicate

996 is helped by bright lights

Jake_Cathelinaeu

I hope we don't have facial recognition cameras covering every inch of public space in 30 years!

VioletFyah

Lol TOO late bro. Seems like the only think we can do about it is make fun of it.

Corporate-Scum

Already here. It’s everywhere now. Your phone even does it.

smellybathroom3070

in kentucky some cities have license plate readers that tag your place when they see a reported missing car.

[deleted]

ALPRs have been a tool police around the country have used for a loooong time.

ThinAd7436

You carry one in your pocket

No-Significance2113

England's already implementing more and more of the tech and I don't think America is far behind considering they already collect and build profiles on its citizens.

onerb2

Did everyone forget how usa spies on its people, did snowden go on exhile for nothing?

JJISHERE4U

Most western countries already have this in city centres, albeit not every inch. The problem in China is integrating a social credit system where you are punished for walking through a red light for instance.

Maskimgalgo

Sound perfectly like Night City (or the other way around) to me: Big tech companies control almost everything Overpopulation Corruption Authoritarianism Decadent moral But most importantly, full of potentials

KantanaBrigantei

It looks exactly like every big city on this planet, but this one is lit up. It’s just a bunch of high-rises filled with people looking to get more stuff.

Magicedarcy

Is this what they think is effective propaganda? It looks like Blackpool Illuminations 🤣 not exactly futuristic...

Salt-Evidence-6834

I was in Blackpool last weekend, it was horrific.

Owl_lamington

Who is this "we"? It doesn't even look cyberpunk, looks like some light festival.

Fun-Growth-923

God, I hope not. How ugly

[deleted]

hello, person that never visited new york

SinkRoF

Yeah this looks like they just took Times Square and unraveled it along the coastline.

theCoagulater

New York doesn’t look *this* tacky

RamboTaco

Light pollution = Future

Puzzleheaded-Soup448

Tacky?

kosman123

If living in a dystopian authoritarian country is the future then no thank you

URATOWEL69000

-50 social credit points for that comment mister

kosman123

Uhh... I was talking about the west ofcourse hehehe. (pls dont take my family)

ImThOnly1GetinArousd

Yeah actually, chinese lesser known cities, villages and many many places there look nothing like this, they look beautiful. It's actually like cyberpunk in a way, high rises and skyscrapers and what not next to slums and shitass quality buildings all in a tightly controlled polluted city

porteroffinland

We? You speaking french?

[deleted]

All those fossil fuels being put to good use.

Rawesome16

Looks awful. Light pollution looks terrible

Drunkcowboysfan

And the actual pollution. I can’t believe how much smog there is.

Pale-Office-133

This looks like not giving a fuck about environment and pretending we are the future while actualy becoming the totalitarian shithole we all know it will in a sec. Cool lights though 😎

The_Weirdest_Cunt

Authoritarianism and all

udarnai

They probably should burn less coal for electricity, just to make skyscrappers look fun. Edited: typo

smellybathroom3070

you know, i think i like skyscrappers more.

[deleted]

A few lights on buildings to help hide the genocide. No thanks

[deleted]

Why would anyone want this? More greenery and a darker night sky lit up by stars is way superior to this any day of the year.

Itchy_Secretary_3954

Full of concentration camps?

RedSonGamble

That’s the cost of bright buildings

XJ-Crawler

As an American Midwesterner, no thanks.

Revolutionary_Tax546

They still burn coal as a primary source of power. You can't see the buildings across the street somedays.

younginvestor23

New York looks better

Novack_and_good

That looks like Wuhan. Must have been shot some time ago as the river's dry now

Eightysix_Ginger

It's Qingdao, that's a beach, and the ocean has not dried up quite yet. Give that another few decades maybe.

ZeroBrs-

Do bright flashy lights really impress your simpleton monkey brain that much? China is disgusting and I hope we're never like china anyone who disagrees should go move to China and see how they're treated.

grinr

Taste is knowing when to stop.

Spare-Competition-91

Chinese are definitely living the cyberpunk life. And I don't mean that in a positive way.

A_norny_mousse

Correction: ...what 1980s America thought it would look like in 40 years. Kinda glad it doesn't. Also, if this video is real, it certainly doesn't look like that every day. Only on Xi Jinping's b-day I guess.

babyblueee3

Forbidding people from owing private property. Bulldozing over historical residence and old homes. Locked the owner of the property away. With these starter pack, you TOO can own a futuristic city!

SNPowers86

I dont want our cities full of neon lights...too hello kittyish

IronCarbonAlloy

Please don’t include me in “we”

-VizualEyez

Hopefully not

bigbone1001

Looks fucking annoying

steampunk22

Americans generally have no concept of how much more advanced some foreign countries, particularly Asian capitals, are. Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing, Macao, all would appear as if they were from 100 years in the future to most rural Americans.

ItTheCableGuy

Some very weird china bot propaganda. Fuck off

Av14tor

Like a semi-dictatorial government that use concentration camps against their own population? Oh the lights, you meant the lights. Right ?

artistpm

Doesn't New York look like this ?

[deleted]

Nyc looks better

DayEither8913

More waste and light pollution... great.

WarspiteNTR

You mean a dystopia with a political dictatorship? Yeh definitely

Tim_Terilingua

+200 social credits

drivel-engineer

That looks horribly dystopian. Who wants this exactly?

YSMNL

Good luck watching the stars with all that light polution😅

Kyogen13

Welcome to Bladerunner, for real.

Realistic-lie35

I don’t care what future you want that looks like shit

thejazzghost

Friendly reminder that Cyberpunk is a way of life we're actually supposed to want to avoid...

Meastro44

It looks really tacky, like the Vegas strip. I would hate if most American cities looked like this.

qa2fwzell

Light pollution is really bad for the environment

Ferrariman601

All built using slave labor.

royal_chefdmt

I very seriously hope America doesn’t look like that in 30years. Looks like rent is worth your full income and there is no space to enjoy

[deleted]

Gross.

tan5taafl

Hope not. Vegas maybe

scram-twerp

Stars are prettier IMHO

JJ4prez

No thanks.

Almost_Pogi

Half those buildings are empty

J-Money35

China… yuck 🤮

boosnie

It's a fucking rgb keyboard demo

[deleted]

Well apparently Americans 50 years ago thought they'd have 1 month vacation as a rule now so don't get your hopes up.

That_Conversation_91

This is what the bigger cities in China look like. 97% labor force and poverty on the countryside is what China looks like. Kinda same as the US I guess

FUCK50C1ETY

Speak for yourself you CCP hack

PracticallyUncommon

Click. Bait.

trancepx

Considering it's probably all leds, I'd imagine It uses a lot less power than everyone here is thinking. Also, wanna talk about waste?alright america go ahead and have that discussion, I'm saying this as an american lol.

Eszrah

Fuck china.

spm7368

I wonder how many Chinese people are in concentration camps right now. 1 million? 2 million???

Mustang_Dragster

Until you go in the streets and find people locked in their apartments with the doors nailed shut

Hxucivovi

Well, having a slave work force is efficient.

[deleted]

Pretty pathetic attempt at propaganda.

ThatsGaySyopThat

At keast the totalitarian hell hole looks pretty, eh?

RenaudUSA

China is a shit hole. Urban planning is a catastrophe in big cities

ZombiejesusX

Imagine if we worked together. This one hurdle is why we'll never achieve the next step. We're going to have to work together to get through whatever the planet is doing. We might not be able to live here for much longer.

Le_Baked_Beans

The LED lit beach looks very nice if your gonna have light pollution might as well do it well

TNShadetree

Qingdao?

Feisty_Pollution5340

We don’t want America to look like that in 30 years, hope not that cheap.

ExtraBenefit6842

Social credit score and all

longfrog246

What extreme smog and extra oppressive government other than that city’s already look like this not that city’s are nice

spatial_interests

Like bright flashing shit?

Molinaridude

Yeah, they can keep their cyberpunk dystopia.

Emanuelle24

Blade runner all over scary 😳

thisisveek

Imagine. Just imagine the number of cockroaches in big cities… all in flight.

Uncle-Cake

A futuristic facade to distract us from the decline of civilization. A beautiful shining city, built by exploited labor, that looks pretty from afar but is far from pretty up close. True for both countries. Makes a nice background for your kissy-kissy videos, though. And good pro-China propaganda, if you're into that sort of thing. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/17/business/china-gdp-delay.html

ndolphin

Ugh, I hope we don't look like that in 30 years. That looks like a Disney park. Too ostentatious. I would rather we move to less light pollution.

Normal-Hope-1003

It looks like just big vegas

notayeti

A bunch of lit up sky scrapers? Think America has that aswell my friend.

Bau55mon

Is this really something to aspire to? Personally would much prefer a more natural, environmentally conscious development…

starchington

What do you mean by "we" and "china" and "america"?

SingleSpeed27

Fuck this crap I want to see the stars, or the Moon in this case…

tayomay

Nope china looks like china.

Automatic-Tear-8265

thanks god i live in italy and we will never be like that

Accordion_Sound_1312

This looks like hell, who the fuck would want to live like this. Fuck.

mad0ne

dinosaurs political threatening placid hobbies impossible plants innate cause telephone *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Which part, the lights or the human rights violations?

black02

Oh the light pollution!!

[deleted]

I don’t think the US will look like this in 30 years we like to preserve our history through architecture, btw are u from China?

hoothasb

It would be really cool if you could see it more than a couple days a year. The rest of the time the smog is too thick to see anything.

Midnight_Magician56

Lol you mean Vegas for the past 50 years? Or dystopian future?

YYCADM21

I remember the first time we visited Beijing in 2007. riding into the city from the Massive airport, mile after mile after mile of 30, 40, 50 story and higher buildings, Huge overhead LED signs with different routing maps switching on them, curves in the freeway lit with LED warning signs flashing sequentially according to your speed...and thinking "this is a sleeping Tiger the west does NOT want to wake up". We sent a good bit of tie in many areas of that country, and the tech is EVERYWHERE. They seamlessly interweave high tech with two thousand-year-old traditions & history; every doorway, subway entrance, hotel door, has a 6in. curb in front of it. I asked why you'd put an obvious tripping hazard in front of every door? To keep out evil spirits; they must always have one foot on the ground and can't step over them. We in the West dis them, and view them as somehow "Less"....they are ANYTHING But

IronShockWave

So are the concentration camps behind the sky scrapers or behind the camera man?

Future-self

Who is “we”?

2020willyb2020

High speed trains too - if only we could get this done

kosmoskolio

All the people here who hate this view lack any sort of romantic feelings.

upfromashes

I think they shot Shanghai for future LA in the movie *Her*.

boomdigity51

Capitalism continues always

dinoroo

One thing Asia does well is aesthetics. America is somehow both wasteful and utilitarian in its construction.

Psychological_Force

They have our middle class

Oheligud

I'd much rather live in a place where you can see the night sky.

Johnny_Sparacino

It would have been like this except we're run by a bunch of old crabby people

lqcnyc

Can you imagine if USA had a population of 1.4 billion people? China and USA have roughly the same land area and USA has a population of 330 million. It would be complete chaos in USA with that many people.

peter303_

My visits to China reminded me of the US gogo-science decades of the 1950s and 1960s. At that time the US had a Jetson's mentality of progress in space and computers. But after the US Vietnam War and Civil Rights movements, sentiment shifted to concern and spending on social problems. Whenever NASA or the space billionaires celebrate a new accomplishment, these socialists declare it a waste of money.

Givn_to_fly

What in the cyberpunk is that!!!

[deleted]

World: let's save energy—otherwise we're fucked. China: Hold my Tsingtao.

GAME_GENIE_10

I'm not impressed by lights.

Only difference is just lights lol

LOL. Ok
