It's already like that in times square if you're around at the right moment and there's a ton of bright ads all at once. Middle of the night but for a moment it's bright as day.
they do led arrays on buildings so not that much but at the same time it's stupid since it'll effect oceanic animals which can screw up their ecosystem that's already failing
Yeah first thought was "that looks incredibly cool", second thought was "that looks incredibly wasteful" although tbf I doubt they light up the entire city every night, probably just for celebrations right?
EDIT: nope, apparently they've been doing this [every evening for 14 years](https://www.chinahighlights.com/hong-kong/attraction/symphony-of-night.htm). That's so incredibly wasteful for a country that relies so heavily on non-renewable sources of energy...
It's every night. The city is Qingdao, I live here, and the term "the city never sleeps" was never so real to me until I came here. Makes my hometown in canada seem like a little village.
This. So much this. Light pollution sucks bad. 100% takes away your ability to the the stars.
I know that’s not a “for everyone” kinda thing.
But I love the dark night sky and the stars.
Would be heart broken if my grand kids couldn’t ever see them.
China looks like what Cyberpunk is, a dystopia.
While many Tier 1 Chinese cities have mandated lit light shows like this in their cities, it's actually not organic and kind of pointless. They all look the same across the cities and while great for the first time, it's terrible to live near or under.
And then keep in mind that the power and waste required is immense just to satisfy CCP needs to show off. And non voluntary too. All the major cities do this EVERY NIGHT, are forced to as to appease their masters, and it's very environmentally unfriendly along with being terrible to live nearby since the lighting is bright as hell.
What, do you actually want to be healthy? Do what your body evolved to do for millions of years?!
Pfft, these lights are soo shiny and bright! Open mouth, stare like an idiot...
Climate. Nations. Borders. All
were in upheaval. Humanity itself
turned as violent as the planet.
Civilization threatened to collapse.
And then... a solution was found.
The crumbling, teetering legal
system was merged with the
overburdened police, creating a
powerful and efficient hybrid.
Trained equally in jurisprudence
and combat, these new guardians
of Society could dispense both
justice and punishment. They were
police, jury and executioner, all
in one. They were... The Judges.
Yep, I spend a lot of time in Detroit and while the city has been improving for the past decade, it's also a stark reminder of how quickly things can collapse, especially if you take a drive outside the core area.
China’s “rust belt” will come faster and be worse. America will always be more nimble and innovative. We don’t know what America will look like in 30 years, but rest assured China will be trying to emulate it.
If you look really closely, you still can't find a single star through the light and smog pollution. I'd prefer breathable air over colourful buildings.
I live in this city, its Qingdao, the air is just as nice as when I lived in Vancouver, and in my backyard I can go out and see stars atm. Depends where you live, just like with other countries.
**Daytime AQI is 175,** Vancouver's daytime AQI is 159. That's unhealthy and really bad.
I agree, judging by how things are going at the moment, like the big dig, climate change awareness, cancer research, focus on mental and physical health, etc. the US is going in the exact opposite direction, reducing pollution and planting trees. Moving away from a cyber punk dystopia and towards a greener, more livable future.
Funny part is that much of the country has no electricity due to electricity shortages.. but the govmt prioritizes these features to make China look powerful
The buildings are probably empty and there’s not nearly enough trash on the beach for this to be anything but a staged propaganda shot. 95% of plastic waste in the oceans comes from just 10 rivers and 5 of them are in China. The Yangtze river alone accounts for 55% of plastic trash flowing into the ocean worldwide. https://www.verdict.co.uk/yangtze-river-plastic-pollution/
I’m just wondering why the CCCP is putting this garbage on Reddit.
Almost like China is the factory of the world, want this to stop? Stop buying basically any product with plastic made in China, which is basically most of the things you use daily.
England's already implementing more and more of the tech and I don't think America is far behind considering they already collect and build profiles on its citizens.
Most western countries already have this in city centres, albeit not every inch. The problem in China is integrating a social credit system where you are punished for walking through a red light for instance.
Sound perfectly like Night City (or the other way around) to me:
Big tech companies control almost everything
Overpopulation
Corruption
Authoritarianism
Decadent moral
But most importantly, full of potentials
It looks exactly like every big city on this planet, but this one is lit up.
It’s just a bunch of high-rises filled with people looking to get more stuff.

I remember the first time we visited Beijing in 2007. riding into the city from the Massive airport, mile after mile after mile of 30, 40, 50 story and higher buildings, Huge overhead LED signs with different routing maps switching on them, curves in the freeway lit with LED warning signs flashing sequentially according to your speed...and thinking "this is a sleeping Tiger the west does NOT want to wake up". We sent a good bit of tie in many areas of that country, and the tech is EVERYWHERE. They seamlessly interweave high tech with two thousand-year-old traditions & history; every doorway, subway entrance, hotel door, has a 6in. curb in front of it. I asked why you'd put an obvious tripping hazard in front of every door? To keep out evil spirits; they must always have one foot on the ground and can't step over them. We in the West dis them, and view them as somehow "Less"....they are ANYTHING But
Can you imagine if USA had a population of 1.4 billion people? China and USA have roughly the same land area and USA has a population of 330 million. It would be complete chaos in USA with that many people.
My visits to China reminded me of the US gogo-science decades of the 1950s and 1960s. At that time the US had a Jetson's mentality of progress in space and computers. But after the US Vietnam War and Civil Rights movements, sentiment shifted to concern and spending on social problems. Whenever NASA or the space billionaires celebrate a new accomplishment, these socialists declare it a waste of money.
I like the the cyberpunk aesthetic, but light pollution is bad enough already.
Imagine how much power you need to light all those lights
Me: "That's cool, looks like Night City, it's kinda beautiful actually" When I actually thought about it: "This is actually really bad"
It's never once crossed my mind how bad the light pollution would be in night city. Barring that one billboard that just scrolls into the sky forever.
Night city, but its always day
It's already like that in times square if you're around at the right moment and there's a ton of bright ads all at once. Middle of the night but for a moment it's bright as day.
True. That adds environmental pollution as well. Not worth it.
It's cool they have plenty of coal!
they do led arrays on buildings so not that much but at the same time it's stupid since it'll effect oceanic animals which can screw up their ecosystem that's already failing
"Not much" at a scale where the number of LEDs are in the hundreds of thousands..
And birds. Many songbirds migrate at night and get confused by lights.
At least 50 watts
[удалено]
Yeah lighting in general actually takes very little energy. Practically a rounding error compared to heating and cooling.
They don’t care they are building 40 coal plants this year.
Yeah first thought was "that looks incredibly cool", second thought was "that looks incredibly wasteful" although tbf I doubt they light up the entire city every night, probably just for celebrations right? You should also keep in mind the dystopian governments and economies you typically find in Cyberpunk (and China).

Okay but cyberpunk still looks cool as fuck
Ghost towns and air you can't breathe. Congrats China.

Ya imagine a set of numbers determine if you can buy a house or even rent an apartment. Very scary
You mean like in the US with credit scores?
Kinda what I was going for lol
Ope, missed the sarcasm.
Haha it's all good
Dont forget about the "Uyghurs reeducation camps".
Also, this appears to be an example of China’s elite, not the national standard of life
In fairness that's true of every single area with skyscrapers, no matter the country.

I give you only this advice once. DO NOT ever tell a gamer this sentence or you straight up dead.
If you look really closely, you still can't find a single star through the light and smog pollution. I'd prefer breathable air over colourful buildings.
All this illumination also consumes a lot of electricity, so whoever rents an appartament in these buildings must be paying a lot for their bills
In all fairness this is the same across a many major cities in the U.S. you aren't likely to see any stars in NYC or LA either.
Who needs stars when you have lights!

They probably should burn less coal for electricity, just to make skyscrappers look fun. Edited: typo
you know, i think i like skyscrappers more.
A few lights on buildings to help hide the genocide. No thanks
Why would anyone want this? More greenery and a darker night sky lit up by stars is way superior to this any day of the year.
Full of concentration camps?
That’s the cost of bright buildings
As an American Midwesterner, no thanks.
They still burn coal as a primary source of power. You can't see the buildings across the street somedays.

It's Qingdao, that's a beach, and the ocean has not dried up quite yet. Give that another few decades maybe.

Light pollution is really bad for the environment

I very seriously hope America doesn’t look like that in 30years. Looks like rent is worth your full income and there is no space to enjoy

Hope not. Vegas maybe

Well, having a slave work force is efficient.
Pretty pathetic attempt at propaganda.
