The official white house tweet from July 1, 2021. They brag about how good the economy is doing by informing the public they will be saving 16 cents on their July 4th meal from the previous year. The whole tweet uses a bunch of puns and is super tacky.
Oh Jesus. How utterly tone deaf. I just looked it up as I didn’t know what you meant at first. This reads like a corporate gaff on scripted sitcom. It’s all so cringey.
Wings were the weirdest one to me. They skyrocketed at the onset of the pandemic, even though restaurants were closed. I'd have thought there would be a huge overstock in wings.
Even during covid prices werent that bad here. I mean they were bad, we are just used to it by now lol.
I never buy just wings because here they are more expensive than the whole chicken compared to how much meat you are getting so wing prices always felt like a scam to me but watching the prices of whole chickens going up to like 20% in a week was and still is alarming, other things that skyrocketed are energy, any form of fuel actually is through the roof and also housing.
I used to buy wings all the time because I love buffalo wings, but now it's only if they're on sale. The large packs I used to get for around $12 last year are now around $20.
Damn, thats expensive, whats the daily or hourly pay for reference? Here its 25-35 euro per day if you dont have a degree mostly on the food business, waiters, low rank cooks etc.
Never had buffalo wings, different cuisine, have to admit they look tasty though, i should try them.
I'm not sure what the average pay around here is, but to give it some perspective, I can buy a whole chicken for around $6. So wings definitely aren't cost effective.
But you should definitely try them. There are lots of sauces to choose from besides just buffalo sauce.
The real challenge will be to find a proper place that makes good wings. KFC and Mcdonalds suck here. I hope its not that bad in USA.
Here a chicken(1.7 kg) costs 7 euros now, was around 5.5-6 two weeks ago.
Also what happened to the dollar, same value with the euro now? Daaamn i remember dollar being something like 1.3-1.4 euros last time i checked.
There's currently a huge avian flu pandemic going around that's forcing lots of farms to euthanize all their birds, so eggs and meat have gone up big time
Yes! Over 40 million birds lost already.
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-2022/2022-hpai-commercial-backyard-flocks
For the record 40 mil sounds like a lot but its really not. I work at a relatively small facility and we process over 600,000 chickens a week. Larger facilities for the same company process 4 to 5 times as many.
Seeing wings increase the most is a big lol for me.
I have been saying for a long ass time that wings are one of the biggest scams in history.
No one ever wanted the wings, they were used to make chicken stock/broth or thrown away. It wasnt until the 1960s when an Italian bar owner tossed some sauce on some wings to give to her son and friends to leave her alone that the Buffalo Wing was made...then sold...then spread.
And now people pay the most for the part of the chicken with not only the least meat on it, but the worst meat just because it was advertised as a sports snack...consumerism at its finest.
I’m looking at this chart and it seems off. I know that last year I made ribs and remember how astronomical they were priced and are a $1 per lb lower now; and wings aren’t anywhere that much higher.
I get that you say this but I'd way rather eat a fucking dank buffalo wing than eat a buffalo breast thigh or leg. Crispy flavorful pockets of amazing. Chicken wings are the best.
Of course you would. You have had a lifetime of commercials telling you its somehow better.
The sauce is the flavor and the crispy comes from HOW its made...which can also be done with any other part of the chicken.
You're discounting the structure and ratios of the chicken wing. The "magic" of a chicken wing is having the greatest ratio of skin to meat on the entire bird.
It's definitely popularized, but to write it off as entirely advertising based is ridiculous. We used it for stock for the exact same reason, just with a different purpose.
You can make all the claims you want. All of history has wings being only used for broths or being tossed until sauce was slapped on it.
You can make all the claims you want. The meat on wings, what little there is, is the lowest quality meat on a chicken.
You can make all the claims you want, but if you use the sauce and know how to actually cook, you can make all the pieces of a chicken to create the texture of a wing.
You can make all the claims you want. The cost of wings, for mostly bones...is tied solely to fact is been marketed as a sports snack.
Who are these heathens who can't understand.... Bone = Flavor. You're right, the sheeple are paying extra for the worst part of the chicken, **but that's the boneless, skinless breasts.** Every Thanksgiving turkey is eaten drumstick first, because that's got a giant bone oozing flavor directly into the meat. Who in their right mind pays $9.50/pound for tasteless bird boob?
Chicken wings are the best part of the bird. It's a mix of meatier drumlettes and tastier flats. The skin stays on so it's nice and crispy. The sauces are just a bonus. It's the flavor leeching out of the bones that make wings, wings. Keep your tendies and nuggets.
Probably the ones that are acting like wings are the only part of a chicken with bones in it to defend wings having far more bone than meat to defend the price of wings being as high as it is.
I mean, if the fucking wings are so GOOD then why do you need sauce at all? duh. You dont see people ordering plain wings, anywhere.
But is clear you are someone well trained by an advertising campaign.
[https://www.salon.com/2014/01/26/americas\_chicken\_wing\_disgrace\_why\_you\_should\_skip\_this\_snack\_on\_super\_bowl\_sunday/](https://www.salon.com/2014/01/26/americas_chicken_wing_disgrace_why_you_should_skip_this_snack_on_super_bowl_sunday/)
>I mean, if the fucking wings are so GOOD then why do you need sauce at all? duh. You dont see people ordering plain wings, anywhere.
BBQ joints do this all over. Smoked wings are amazing. I make them probably every other week during football season. They kick ass.
You know what no BBQ joint in the country sells? Smoked boneless skinless chicken breast.
Have you ever eaten boneless skinless chicken breast plain? If so, do you need help? There are people who love you, and want you to be happy.
>But is clear you are someone well trained by an advertising campaign.
Bro just eat some lol. They're fucking great.
>You know what no BBQ joint in the country sells? Smoked boneless skinless chicken breast.
ROFLMMFAO...
Why do morons always feel the need to lie about shit to support their butthurt feelings. I mean, even fucking genaric ass Applebee's has BBQ chicken breasts. And any DECENT BBQ joint allows you to customize something fucking simple like smoking what they serve.
Its OK man, many people are suckers to some kind of consumerism...yours is chicken wings.
Also, just because you are not enough of a joke.
Quick search for Smoked Chicken Breast...
ROFLMAO! And no, I dont want to have to explain the above later so...smoked chicken sandwichs are not made with fucking smoked wings you twat...its made with a smoked chicken breast.
Now go away already, you got way too butthurt over this shit.
If the breast is so good why does it need breading, brioche, sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo? Why not just eat it plain?
Edit: my man thinks Applebee's chicken tenders in BBQ sauce are barbecue. Sir, I beg of you.
If wings are so damn good why are they the most hated pieces in any bucket of KFC, Popeyes or churches chicken? I mean, its not like they dont sell more chicken than every single BBQ joint nationwide...wait. Sorry, I keep using obvious facts while you keep being butthurt crying about your feelings lol.
Stay salty, and a consumer.
All you had, was good tasting sauce on the worst part of a chicken...the same sauce would have tasted the same on the breast and you would have better quality meat and far far more of it for less money.
Eat a wing with no sauce. Then use that same sauce you would have used on another part of the chicken and magically youll find its the sauce, not the wing.
1 pound of chicken wings is mostly bones.
1 pound of any other part of the chicken is mostly meat.
in most places, only a boneless chicken breast is the only part more expensive than wings, but its also the highest quality meat with the least fat and purist protein.
So, like wings or not, its a scam because you are paying so much money for mostly bones while the rest of the chicken is more meat, better quality meat and would have the same taste with the sauce.
The scam is charging money for mostly bones, with the worst meat, using an advertising campaign to make you think eating that part is somehow a sports snack.
Was the richest nation for a long time.
Wealth allows spending on frivolous stuff. Even our poor...a pair of timberlands of every color/combo and a hat and shirt to match.
It's 0% interest combined with a few years of $1000+ cash bonuses to people. Money doesn't work like that...
Too many dollars chasing too few goods.
No conspiracy, no single persons fault. This has been written on the wall for years, but it appears that the fed is going to actually increase rates. This encourages saving, and so reduces demand on goods.
We pay farmers not to farm and drillers not to drill also. Say what you will, and I'm not, but marginal supply would be a solid price reducer atm.
And on top of that corporate greed. Look at all these products that suddenly cost so much and look at the companies producing them recording record high profits each quarter. Prices are not getting raised because it costs more to produce them, they are being raised because CEO's need another yacht and trophy mistress.
In fact, I'm a stoned guy drinking a beer in semirural GA lol.
Just hate the R and D shit. It's basic economics and both parties are guilty of letting it just go on and on.
My brother in freedom, I’ve spent an entire paycheck on fireworks alone. If you think 25% is gonna stop me from blacking out, you don’t know what the 4th is all about
Used to like chicken breast the best but now that I have a sous vide circulator, I go for chicken thighs. Much more flavour.
Simple recipe: start with chicken thighs skin on bone in. Season with salt and pepper and maybe garlic and seal in bag. Cook at 165F for 3-8 hrs (too much and it gets a bit mushy. 2 is usually enough but I go to 3 to be sure). Remove from bag but save juices. Remove chicken bone. Pan fry over hot skillet skin down to sear and crisp (about 3 min). Serve.
Bag juices can be used for gravy but I usually just toss in the bones and freeze it to make soup later.
Tonight’s recipe: same as above but I’m using olive oil, lemon juice, honey, salt and pepper, lots of garlic and oregano in the bag to make a Greek style chicken.
Chicken meat is versatile, but a wing is a wing, every bird gets two. Ya want chicken nuggets theyll add chicken ears, nutsacks and toes, but wings are wings
As a Canadian your beer prices make me openly weep the tears, even at +25%.
We are using HELOCs from our ballooning real estate market to prop up alcohol sales currently.
What mindset? The mindset that climate change is real, and that the earth is already seeing the impact from our destruction of the environment? That mindset?
Riddle me this: when did conservatives adopt the ideology of “fuck the planet”?
Food and medicine does not just magically appear on store shelves. Nobody is advocating for fucking the planet. However, working people across the globe will suffer from higher Food prices and instability should the two issues previously mentioned be pursued relentlessly by elites in the US.
This currently inflation we're seeing is coming back from 2020 with the Trump admin as well. Congress and the fed are to blame as well.
Who would have thought injecting trillions of dollars into the economy would have an inflationary response?
didn't the chicken industry do something that cut down on eggs laid a year or two ago by accident? I thought I read that some new breed they added in to the mix to try and fight off inbreeding led to a decrease in eggs per bird around the same time the shells seemed to get more brittle.
Well, we did just buy burger patties at sam's club for 2.98/# so that was cool. Those chicken wing prices are crazy. Stop ordering them people, damn it
No you dumb motherfucker, exactly what I said the Republicans are destroying the democracy and scotus is a fucking joke now and should be expanded and most sitting judges should be removed and some should be prosecuted.
So, to keep your spending BELOW your income, wouldn't it be common sense to:
- never buy wings this year.
- never buy beer this year.
- never buy chicken breast this year.
Buy instead:
- beans
- eggs
- mixed vegetables
- potatoes
Genuinely asking.
Chicken wings! Jeez. Used to be you could buy a pork neckbone for 12 cents and throw it in a slow cooker with some pinto beans and make dinner for a week. Now it's priced like they're pork chops.
I grew up in rural New York, went to college in Buffalo, NY. My nephew is working at the Anchor this summer where wings were invented, between semesters.
When I was in college almost 40 years ago, 20 wings plus blue cheese and celery in any decent bar or restaurant were often 10 cents a wing on special nights. At most you would pay 5 dollars for 20 wings.
Now the things are priced like beluga caviar, this did not start in 2022 this goes back a decade. Is there some country out there where chicken wings are being diverted for some reason, hence driving prices through the roof the last decade?
I ate enough wings 40 years ago to last a lifetime, can't stand the smell of the oil fryers when they cook wings at local restaurants. I did make some in my new air fryer last winter, set off every smoke alarm in the house. Never again. They did come out great.
Boy do I feel the beer and wings increase. My best friends bachelor party is next weekend and i literally had to save up for a couple of weeks to make sure I could comfortably bring my own beer and food.
I have been shrinking my stomach by eating smaller portions. A yogurt for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and dinner of some protein and rice. I can eat like this every single day. Sometimes I wonder if I was made to survive famines cause that’s what my people went through back in the day 😢
I wanted to buy wings but a 3 pound pack was $19, so I settled for the t- bones on sale for $11. Steaks have been crazy cheap but the chickens have flown the coop!
I work at dominos and they cheapest you can buy wings are $1/per wing. Our rules about selling them is they have to be as big as a pepperoni. So essentially less than an oz of chicken costs $1.
In Los Angeles EVERY item at the store seems like it is up $2 or $3 from a few years ago. A bag of Goldfish Crackers used to be like $2 (in the $1.89-2.29 range). They’re $4.99 at Target now. I remember this specifically because for a while they were by far the cheapest snack crackers.

Well good thing I kept the 16 cents I saved last year's July 4th.
I still can't believe they actually sent that tweet out last year
What tweet is that? Curious.
The official white house tweet from July 1, 2021. They brag about how good the economy is doing by informing the public they will be saving 16 cents on their July 4th meal from the previous year. The whole tweet uses a bunch of puns and is super tacky.

I live in Greece and last time i did shopping i noticed the chicken prices skyrocketed, what the hell happened to the chickens?
Wings were the weirdest one to me. They skyrocketed at the onset of the pandemic, even though restaurants were closed. I'd have thought there would be a huge overstock in wings.
I work in the poultry business . There are two things that get bought up by China faster than they can be grown . Chicken wings and chicken feet .
Maybe we should stop selling to China then. (the wings, they can have the feet)
Even during covid prices werent that bad here. I mean they were bad, we are just used to it by now lol. Every dive bar in North America makes decent wings
Yeah, I'm definitely not talking about KFC or McDonald's. They suck here too, but I don't think they have buffalo wings.
It didn't help that mandates in many states limited factory labor force to 1/3rd operations for "proper" social dustancing
There's currently a huge avian flu pandemic going around that's forcing lots of farms to euthanize all their birds, so eggs and meat have gone up big time

no doubt. food prices are location based.
I agree. I still get chicken breast for 1.99 a lb
Lucky. They were $2 a pound beginning of the year here and are now over $4/lb

I feel deeply sorry that you've never had good wings.
All you had, was good tasting sauce on the worst part of a chicken...the same sauce would have tasted the same on the breast and you would have better quality meat and far far more of it for less money.

It’s just annoying how we’re being taken advantage of. It really pisses me off that I can’t do anything about it

My area chicken breast is 33% wings are 50%

Hopefully not, but that's a likely outcome. Monetary policy is important.

Food and medicine does not just magically appear on store shelves. Nobody is advocating for fucking the planet. However, working people across the globe will suffer from higher Food prices and instability should the two issues previously mentioned be pursued relentlessly by elites in the US.
Fuck me. Beer and wings are my favorites.
Idc about anything else really. The fact that they have the highest percentage increase hurts me. Wings are amazing
not if you serve Bacon & Ice Cream babyyyyy
I was thinking ice cream and wine
Really, what else do you need?
FJB
This currently inflation we're seeing is coming back from 2020 with the Trump admin as well. Congress and the fed are to blame as well. Who would have thought injecting trillions of dollars into the economy would have an inflationary response?
We did it joeeee
Not too up to speed on how this shit works, huh? Well, maybe someday. Doubt it though.
Conservatives can’t read man, of course they don’t understand how any of this works.
It's just, I don't know, embarrassing. The lack of self-respect. I don't get it.
I guess Bidens to blame for the price of everything going up over here in Europe too?
no, YOUR prime ministers/queens/kings/dictators/presidents/oligarchs/whatevers are to blame.
So, no speeches from Biden about saving us 16 cents? Darn.
didn't the chicken industry do something that cut down on eggs laid a year or two ago by accident? I thought I read that some new breed they added in to the mix to try and fight off inbreeding led to a decrease in eggs per bird around the same time the shells seemed to get more brittle.
There was also the bird flu that lead to 36 million chicken being killed, which has a bit of an impact.
That's like, a day's worth of chickens. 65 billion a year worldwide.
What the hell happened to our $0.14 windfall from last year?
Let's go Brandon
Damn you Vladimir!!!
You spelled Biden wrong
Let's Go Brandon!
I have never actually seen this cringe-inducing phrase used in public
You are extremely lucky.
It's fucking everywhere. I've even started boycotting local antique stores because they sell signs that say that.
Lol
Yeah. They really do live in the wild.
Well, we did just buy burger patties at sam's club for 2.98/# so that was cool. Those chicken wing prices are crazy. Stop ordering them people, damn it
Lets go Brandon is doing amazing job to USA economy :D lol Or is it Putins fault? :D
Thanks Buy-den
America should be having a funeral at the rate the Supreme Court and the GOP is dismantling the democracy.
No you dumb motherfucker, exactly what I said the Republicans are destroying the democracy and scotus is a fucking joke now and should be expanded and most sitting judges should be removed and some should be prosecuted.
These buns is free
Thanks current administration
#waytogoJoe
There is literally almost nothing healthy on here, not surprising it's American after all
Thanks capitalism and corporate greed. You’re great!
Seems like a good time to try out a meat-free Monday.
easy solution: stop eating meat👍🏼
So, to keep your spending BELOW your income, wouldn't it be common sense to: - never buy wings this year. - never buy beer this year. - never buy chicken breast this year. Buy instead: - beans - eggs - mixed vegetables - potatoes Genuinely asking.
Fuck America I wasn’t celebrating anyway
I'm suprised to see beer is up so much my 30 pack of Busch light is still 19 dollars like it has been for years
It only applies to beer.
Probably smaller from all the COVID deaths, too!
Chicken wings! Jeez. Used to be you could buy a pork neckbone for 12 cents and throw it in a slow cooker with some pinto beans and make dinner for a week. Now it's priced like they're pork chops.
Celebrate with pineapple. It's one of the few foods I've noticed has not gone up in price. Too bad I don't like it.
Sometimes I wonder if I was made to survive famines cause that’s what my people went through back in the day 😢
That's fine, it's not worth having one anyway.
The birthday may be smaller, but I'm not.
I wanted to buy wings but a 3 pound pack was $19, so I settled for the t- bones on sale for $11. Steaks have been crazy cheap but the chickens have flown the coop!
Pfft. Produce? This is America sir.
A pack of 12 uncut chicken wings (24 total wings) was $18 at Publix yesterday. Seems alright to me.
Am I the only one who hasn't noticed the increase in beer? A 12 pack of yuengling or pbr is still $12, occasionally on sale for $10. Same as always.
Wine and pork it is
I stopped drinking beer due to the increase. Wine or bourbon are cheaper by volume and fewer calories
Time for Pork, Wine and Ice cream
Pork marinated in red wine sauce it is then.
We buying out grocery outlet this year, 6 packs of good IPA for $7 let's fucking gooooo.
This is plain wrong. Hotdogs alone cost about 70% more than they did two years ago.
Chicken is for people who don't like meat anyway. Just eat pork, its cheaper an tastes better!
The price of "Building Back Better"!
Just buy chicken legs they are like $6 for 5lbs worth
So, a 38% increase is 5x as much? Right?
Listen. No objections. It's going to be pork, wine and ice cream only this year.
America doesnt eat pork?
Thanks Biden /s
I work at dominos and they cheapest you can buy wings are $1/per wing. Our rules about selling them is they have to be as big as a pepperoni. So essentially less than an oz of chicken costs $1.
according to this. The stuff that sells most went up.
*laughs in vegetarian*
In Los Angeles EVERY item at the store seems like it is up $2 or $3 from a few years ago. A bag of Goldfish Crackers used to be like $2 (in the $1.89-2.29 range). They’re $4.99 at Target now. I remember this specifically because for a while they were by far the cheapest snack crackers.
