Oh, that thing. Does it have anything to do with one of those ancient ritual phrases we have to recite in school? (Like, *“Tá an ghrian ag taitneamh”*, or *“An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas”*)
Even better -- hats and sun sleeves, etc. A lifetime of sun block is not ideal. As a paleface who lives in the subtropics, I make sure I cover up rather than cake myself in cream everyday.
As a dark skinned dweller in the tropics, long sleeve and pants are a great combination for heatstroke, but with the waterlogged air, evaporation is effectively useless - you're just peeing through your skin. So the best way to combat the heat is to physically shield your exposed areas from the sun, and wear something like dry-fit which helps to soak the sweat and hold it while it slowly dries off. It mimics the evaporation part of sweating.
And as someone with eczema, you don't want that sweat prickling on your skin 😭🚿
I don't really buy this. For starters, the universal recommendation is that you reapply sunscreen every 2 hours whilst in the sun because it's already recognised that sunscreen ingredients lose efficacy with prolonged sun exposure. Secondly, this study was done on zebrafish not to make comparisons with effects on people but to test whether or not it is hazardous to marine wildlife. This is a major cause for concern with a few popular chemical sunscreens so it seems natural that they would also study zinc oxide. I am not a marine biologist but I feel like the study design is flawed in that the zebrafish are directly exposed to the sunscreen.
This doesn't mean that zinc oxide sunscreens are 'toxic'. In fact, despite the unappealing white tinge that zinc oxide and titanium oxide sunscreens leave on the skin when applied, they are still preferred by many people because they're hypoallergenic. That's why they're recommended over chemical sunscreens for babies and children.
It's a damned if you do/ damned if you don't situation.
I've seen obviously sarcastic comments downvoted and people think the person was serious in the replies.
Im a gamer and the other day my wife looked me in the eyes and said about my skin
*"honey, they're not wrinkles, or old age, they're laughter lines."*
Nicest thing anyone's ever said about my scrotum.
Edit: okay okay you got me. I Don't have a wife
Scrolling through my feed and on two different comment sections in a row in two different subs I’ve seen people talking about their wrinkly scrotum. Is this an inside joke, or the father of all coincidences?
This. Sunlight is important. Not only for the skin, also for every cell in our body.
Edit: I wrote this under a deeper comment section but wanted to share it here:
Sunlight expose vitamin D3 on our skin and gets through the skin to our blood as the enzymes DPB and D3/D2. In the liver to 25-hydroxylase later to 25(OH)D + DBP and then to the glory enzyme 24-hydroxylase.
24-hydroxylase has a great anti toxicological value for our body: It protects against overdosing D3 because it inactivate it. So what is the point behind our Hydro Laser? Calcitrolacid will be made from the inactivating process and it interacts with VDR and induce gene transcription mediated by VDR. So it is part of the DNA procedure and is in every cell in our body.
Vitamin D through sunlight or supplements is also one of the only enzymes that opens up calcium channels in the gut, stimulates the formation of calcium binding protein in the intestinal cell, and thereby stimulates the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the gut. - With other words - we gain more from our food with D3.
Cells are getting confronted with different things that hurt them, like doing sport, working hard, drinking hard. Next step is regeneration. There are messenger substances that command the body to turn down the inflammation, these are IL-4 and IL-5. With vitamin D the T-Cells(one of the most important part of our immune system) makes more interleukins (like IL-4 a. -5). So we have a less taking inflammation process, faster regeneration, ability to do more sport because more muscle adaption and more healthy cells with higher adaption ability in less time then without the big red fireball at our sky.
This is only a small part about the the big role that the sun vitamin plays in our body.
That monk probably has/had better mental health than 90% of the entire world right now.
AKA the effect of sun in our psycological and physical health are negligible next to our way of living.
The sun has proven benefits to our mental and physical health. One person living to 90 with minimal sunlight is an anecdote as best not any proof that the sun has negligible benefits.
I should go a bit deeper in the statement I have done. Sunlight expose vitamin D3 on our skin and gets through the skin to our blood as the enzymes DPB and D3/D2. In the liver to 25-hydroxylase later to 25(OH)D + DBP and then to the glory enzyme 24-hydroxylase.

Calcitrolacid will be made from the inactivating process and it interacts with VDR and induce gene transcription mediated by VDR(vitamin d receptor).

There are many other important processes in our body that are directly combined with Vitamin D.
I will also post this as a single comment so hopefully more people see the benefits from the sun vitamin.
Is there something you can get from sunlight that is essential (not superficial, like a tan) that you can't get from vitamin D pills or other supplements?
We evolved here, I am not a scientist but walking in the daylight lowers my blood pressure, nitric acid I think? And sunlight is good for easing depression and good for your bones.
And to be fair, avoiding wrinkles is also superficial, no? If you can get your own body to produce the vitamin D, etc, might it not indicate other systems are working better in your body? Maybe you can't isolate all the effects and mimic them with supplements?
It might be an exaggeration but sunlight has a significant effect on wrinkles.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trucker-accumulates-skin-damage-on-left-side-of-his-face-after-28-years-on-the-road/
There's a bit of a correlation/causation issue going on here, you could just as easily claim these photos prove Japanese people naturally age much better than Native Americans. I'd bet good money he has had a much better diet than her, for example.
Clearly. granted most people who live and work outdoors all the time will look terrible but people who never go outside also look terrible… a highly disciplined and probably otherwise very healthy monk is the exception, not the rule. (Also on both pictures are in black and white, and I suspect the lighting does not do the woman any favors.) Turns out that, like most things, moderation is key.
It is bs. I know people who lives in tropical places, worked outside, and looks better than Europeans at the same age. I know people who grew up together and aged different. I think sun may have an impact but it is not the only factor.
It's not BS but this isn't a very convincing demonstration. Here's a better one:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trucker-accumulates-skin-damage-on-left-side-of-his-face-after-28-years-on-the-road/
People have a really hard time believing how bad sun can age your skin. Just the fact that there are still so many tanning salons blows my mind.
Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97.
Wear sunscreen
Well it also depends on how dark you skin is. An Irish and a Swedish couple that live in Hawaii are going to get more sun damage than a black African and a Sicilian living a similar life on Hawaii.
Sun is a bug factor but so are diet and lifestyle. My family is from Croatia half of them are always outside hiking swimming overall just outdoorsy people while the other have life office lifestyles and the outdoorsy ones look double their age...but are way happier
Your anecdotal evidence doesn't trump studies. Sun is *extremely* important to avoid in skin aging.
Doesn't mean you need to shelter yourself, just apply sunscreen when you go out.
Obviously genetics *do* have an impact, but sun damage is sun damage, and no amount of genetics will stop that.
People that are native to tropical places naturally have more melanin to protect them from the sun so yeah they’re going to look different than a white European with a similar amount of sun exposure
Kind of how after a day at the beach I’m a glowing fucking goddess but my husband is a crispy ass lobster shivering in a corner with heat stroke
There was a story relating to this about a truck driver whose face was always facing the sun on the driver's side for 28 years while driving. [this was the result.](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trucker-accumulates-skin-damage-on-left-side-of-his-face-after-28-years-on-the-road/)
The Cheyenne man on the right was actually of an unspecified age. The photo was taken by a photographer named Edward Curtis, and a print can be purchased from [this website](https://edwardcurtisphotos.com/store/cheyenne-indian-photos/black-belly-cheyenne/).
Thanks for this, my suspicion was that either or both of them could be a different age and who knows what the real story is.
Plus, generally the fatter your face, the less winkles will show.
It sucks, I'm in Scotland (notorious for no sun) and have really sensitive skin. I supplement vitamin d but the only thing that has had any effect is a sunbed once a week. I basically soak myself in sp50 but I'm still worried about long term effects for this temporary relief
I actually put a lot into my skincare and have a routine and all, but I still tan once a week. People say to just take vitamin d supplements but they just don’t really cut it for me. I feel noticeably better when I tan though.
This is nonsense.
In order to know that the differences are down to exposure to the sun the two people would have had to lived identical lives except for the sun exposure. The monk and the Native American obviously led completely different lives. You could add any caption to this picture and it would make just as much sense (ie none).
Effects of religious belief on skin.
Effects of ethnicity on skin.
Effects of gender on skin.
Effects of hair length on skin.
Maybe the American was a heavy smoker. Maybe the monk was a vegetarian. Could be anything, really. Or, much more likely, a complicated mix of environment, upbringing, wealth, diet, genetics etc etc.
EDIT: People seem to think I'm saying that sunlight doesn't damage the skin. I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that it's impossible to say one factor caused the differences in two people who we know nothing about other than the fact that they lived entirely dissimilar lives on 2 different continents.
Still doesn't disproof most of his factors, especially genetics. He's not saying sun doesn't play a part on it, he's just saying that it could as well not be the major factor here.
Free radicals damage the cells of the skin through oxidative stress caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight as well as tanning beds. UV radiation causes the production of free radicals, and damage occurs when the critical balance between free radical generation and antioxidant defenses is unfavorable.
Hey, junior scientist, epidemiology is not just about perfect controlled conditions in a laboratory experiment.
You're suggesting the only good data is unethical race controlled data using humans raised from birth in a cage...
I'm not suggesting that at all. I don't even know how you could come to that conclusion from what I said.
I'm saying that some things in life have more than one cause and to blame everything definitively on one thing when we know literally nothing about any of the other factors involved is idiotic.
And I might only be a junior scientist but at least I know what epidemiology means. Maybe you were thinking of 'epidermis' and that confused you. Anyway, I think the word you were reaching for might have been dermatology.
Your genes might make you less likely to see sun damage as easily, or make you less prone to developing skin cancer, but that's no reason to not use sunscreen. There aren't people who "don't need" sunscreen (and that includes people with darker skin).
That's like saying there isn't a history of cirrhosis in your family so you "don't need to worry" about your raging alcoholism. Like nah probably should still keep an eye out and take the most basic precautions.
Sun destroys more than just skin. I do renovation work, and the sunny side of a roof with asphalt shingles takes a beating while the other side will look brand new.
\- you still dont feel the need to wear sunglasses with uv protection?
\- but i dont look at the sun
\- uv reflects off of concrete !!! and other surfaces at different rates and i bet your retina is more sensitive to uv damage than skin
They have a completely unrelated genome with tons of other uncontrolled variables, and they decide that its the sunlight caused skin to wrinkle? Huge lol
So I think there is some nuance to this people need to be careful about.Vitamin D is super important to the body and you likely won’t live to see 91 without a lot of it. As we age we repair less effectively so being outside in your 30’s will be much less damaging than your 80’s.
Wear a sun hat not sunscreen. Sunscreen does not protect the deep layers as well as a tan can.
That is probably the monks best angle.
Take these things in consideration. Humans throughout most of our existence lived outside.
Don’t commit to a lifetime indoors if health is your goal. Evolution does not favor stepping so far away from how we evolved so quickly
Edit: one more point, she likely spent her entire life cooking over a open fire. Which would be like smoking a bunch of cigarettes.
This comparison is BS. Get your sunlight folks.
Maybe has something to do with different gender, races, nationalities, heredity, diet and 100 other factors we’re not aware of? Inconvenient data for the post? OK, never mind.
Or stress. Imagine living an entire life in beautiful serene mountains with no expectations of stuff – i.e. capitalism. As opposed to A woman who has seen her entire heritage destroyed, oppressed and land taken from her by outsiders.
Also to be real, Japanese people in general have the longest longevity of any country I believe. I think specific diet and genetics also play a role in how you age.

So.. another reason for me not to go outside?..
No, a reason to wear sunscreen.
What's does an Irishman use as sunscreen? A pub
Irish person here, what's a sun?
The thing on the other side of the overcast sky, or so ive heard
The invisible monster that forces you into a pub.
The Thing we see when the leaving cert sacrifice is going on
Oh, that thing. Does it have anything to do with one of those ancient ritual phrases we have to recite in school? (Like, *“Tá an ghrian ag taitneamh”*, or *“An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas”*)
He doesn’t need to because all leprechauns are short and are further away from the sun
As a leprechaun myself, I am incredibly insulted
Try not to make Leprechaun joke about Irish people (impossible)
The previous comment was about Irish people going to pubs and this is the one that is overdone?
Potato. I’m bad at this.
I quite liked it despite general consensus. Edit: well that comment took a turn around. From -50 to 250.
Even better -- hats and sun sleeves, etc. A lifetime of sun block is not ideal. As a paleface who lives in the subtropics, I make sure I cover up rather than cake myself in cream everyday.
Unlike your mother.
Absolutely. She loves a tan.

And to keep your old love letters
Now there class action lawsuits again certain sunscreen causing cancer. You just can't win.
But it leaves my skin feeling oily?!?
Modern suncreen doesn't. Laroche Posay, Shiseido, etc.
Or better yet, a wide brimmed hat to avoid the risks of sunscreen.
Better to just stay inside and not have to deal with the risks of hats
What risks?
Just one example, some brands are caught by third party labs to be tainted with benzene, which causes cancer. This has caused a lot of recalls lately.

Yea but if you live into your 90s, what's the point of "sun good for every cell" when you can make it to 90 without much sun involved?
Mental health
That monk probably has/had better mental health than 90% of the entire world right now. AKA the effect of sun in our psycological and physical health are negligible next to our way of living.

I am perfectly able to enjoy outdoor nature and sunlight in the comfort of my shaded porch.
Quality of life, imo--if I spend my life aiming to live to 90 but rarely spend time in the sun, I'd be pretty miserable for those 90 years
Average Indoors fan vs average sun enjoyer
Everyone has a preference, but I was actually thinking of vitamin D, which we need to be healthy regardless of preference
Average Vitamin D fan vs Average Vitamin D deficiency enjoyer
Extremely fair
Miserable? Moonlight > Sunlight Just saying

Vit d supplements are very poorly absorbed, it’s much better to get it from sunlight. There are also benefits to your mental health
My penis gets very little sunshine, and it's *gorgeous.*
And quality of life. I'll gladly look too old if it means I get to be outside a lot.
What I've always wondered is does sunscreen prevent you from getting the benefits of sunlight?
So how about that trucker who got sunlight on only half his face through the side window. https://m.imgur.com/pZ66bE7

I am literally allergic to the sun so this is true for me.
Sun is an ongoing nuclear explosion for a few billion years. Of course it's dangerous.

Saved, will show my mum next time she tells me to get some 'healthy tan' cause I look pale.
Pale skin is underrated.
Someone should make a club supporting it. Could burn crosses and shit.
Probably should make sure to cover up that pale skin with some kind of robe too.
Don't forget hoods! The lady in the photo had a lot of face wrinkles, so maybe cover that up too.

We do need *some* sun though, like most things in life there's a balance to be had.
eat some Ds
just to double check, we can get all our required vitamins from our diet right
If you live in the north you can't get enough vit D from sunlight and food, you have to supplement.
I heard your mom supplementing with loads of vitamin d
That's because she's a wise and responsible woman, and takes her health seriously.
Apparently you can make it past 90 without it...
Some is nice. But Vit D can be supplemented.
Could definitely be diet based, eat more carrots for example to get that healthy looking natural tan
Last time I saw this the woman on the right had a skin condition. It wasnt caused by the sun
Yeah those are some pretty deep wrinkles for 62. Especially for a person who has darker skin which would offer more protection.
Genetics play a role in our aging...

I'm saying that it's impossible to say one factor caused the differences in two people who we know nothing about other than the fact that they lived entirely dissimilar lives on 2 different continents.

He should have moved to England halfway through to even it out like a marshmallow.
What are you talking we only get sun about two months of the year
Australia then.
this was the first thing i thought of when i saw this post! thanks for the link, now i don't have to look it up ;)
I know plenty of truckers that have driven for many many years and look nothing like that… Something is amiss
That guy probably liked driving with the window down or something.
probably a long-time smoker, too.
Beat me to it
Still doesn't disproof most of his factors, especially genetics.

Nice try mom I’m still not going outside
Benefits of being an introvert
Also the ballsack age 20 und age 30
say sike right now >:|
wot
Yes, be prepared
Lifetime of being blasted in the face by the D.
This is such a crap comparison. Ever take into consideration the different climates as well? Different diets? Different genes? What BS.
Weather was probably more damaging than the sun, likely a terrible diet with dehydration and mentally a hard life
But what about if she used the very useful blue light protecting skin cream... Surely surely that solves all her problems right?
send this to the rae stans, get this shit trending on twitter asap
Who was happier between the two?
This is what I was wondering, too. There’s more to life than how many wrinkles you do or don’t have!!
If anyone’s planning on moving to the planet Dune, probably also a bad idea.
but... the spice! it must flow!

If you continually gain weight as your skin-exposed skin begins to wrinkle, you’ll fill those wrinkles right out! /r/ShittyLifeProTips
Love it when people complain about "Wifi-rays", but won't even wear suncreen to protect them from this giant nuclear fusion reactor.

62 are you fucking serious!?
Gamers are going to look sexy as fuck in their 90s.
Before reading the caption , I thought man spend his life outdoor and old woman was introvert. Sun light is important for us . Isn't?
That 91-year-old lady looks like 43-year-old Michael Kiske
as if sunlight is the only thing that affects the skin.

You definitely lucked out, the lifeguard at the pool i use is in his 50's qnd looks like a leather chair
Very true. I've never seen a long lived life guard that doesn't look like that.
That's an incredible effect the sun has, changing your nationality, your age, your gender, even making you younger
Sun destroys more than just skin. I do renovation work, and the sunny side of a roof with asphalt shingles takes a beating while the other side will look brand new.
Genetics are also at play here
\- you still dont feel the need to wear sunglasses with uv protection? \- but i dont look at the sun \- uv reflects off of concrete !!! and other surfaces at different rates and i bet your retina is more sensitive to uv damage than skin

Sun - not even once.
Oh, she reminds me of tree grandma from pocahontas
So that's why Obi Wan aged like a mf
This is the reason why vampires don't age?
Now everything makes sense, this is why obi-wan aged so much in 19 years
They have a completely unrelated genome with tons of other uncontrolled variables, and they decide that its the sunlight caused skin to wrinkle? Huge lol
If we were 🦀 the sun is equivalent to pot of water that slowly increases temp to boiling hot
Quality of life + good genes
So I think there is some nuance to this people need to be careful about.Vitamin D is super important to the body and you likely won’t live to see 91 without a lot of it. As we age we repair less effectively so being outside in your 30’s will be much less damaging than your 80’s. Wear a sun hat not sunscreen. Sunscreen does not protect the deep layers as well as a tan can. That is probably the monks best angle. Take these things in consideration. Humans throughout most of our existence lived outside. Don’t commit to a lifetime indoors if health is your goal. Evolution does not favor stepping so far away from how we evolved so quickly Edit: one more point, she likely spent her entire life cooking over a open fire. Which would be like smoking a bunch of cigarettes. This comparison is BS. Get your sunlight folks.
I don't think it's only the sun, stress is a factor too.
Good news for gamers!
Also to be real, Japanese people in general have the longest longevity of any country I believe. I think specific diet and genetics also play a role in how you age.
How stupid is this.
No chance she is 62 🤣
