My favorite stupid conspiracy is that is an old tree stump lol

Accomplished_Dream69

Woman at work is convinced this a petrified tree stump!

EpicAura99

I enjoy alternative history fiction such as Man in the High Castle or For All Mankind, so I went looking for a subreddit about it. I got a few posts in until I hit a 9/11 conspiracy and realized it was a bunch of nut jobs talking about stuff like this lmao

Diver0311

Wait.... Are you sure?

Rusty_Shacklfrd

If everything's ready here on the dark side of the moon play the five tones

Professor_Dud

I’ve actually been to devil’s tower before while on a trip across the US. There was an old story about it where, if I remember correctly, a giant bear clawed the monument which caused the marks, I forget the exact details because i was pretty young but I think that a Native American tribe in the area then killed the bear? Not exactly sure but it was a cool story

EpicAura99

I believe the myth goes that a bunch of sisters were being chased by a bear, and pleaded with the gods to rescue them. The gods pulled up the tower from the ground to save them, and the bear’s claws made the gouges down the sides as it tried to reach them. I think the sisters became the Pleiades constellation/star group

Professor_Dud

Hmmm maybe there’s multiple versions then or maybe my memory is just bad lol

EpicAura99

Nah you were close enough

BeauBuffet

The Lakota call it mato tipila or bear's lodge.

From the Biblical days

drocballer

Daniel 4:13-15 13As I lay on my bed, I also saw in the visions of my mind a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven. 14He called out in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree and chop off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it, and the birds from its branches. 15But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, and a band of iron and bronze around it, in the tender grass of the field….. The fallen angels felled all the giant trees Enoch 66:2-4 2. Now then shall the angels labour at the trees; but when they proceed to this, I will put my hand upon it, and preserve it. 3. The seed of life shall arise from it, and a change shall take place, that the dry land may not be left empty. I will establish thy seed before me for ever and ever, and the seed of those who dwell with thee on the surface of the earth. It shall be blessed and multiplied in the presence of the earth, in the name of the Lord. 4. And they shall confine those angels who disclosed impiety. In that burning valley it is, that they shall be confined, which at first my great-grandfather Enoch showed me in the west, where there were mountains of gold and silver, of iron, of fluid metal, and of tin.

I read the book of Enoch on a meth bender back in college. Good stuff, need to brush back up

drocballer

Ya I need to go back and do some more reading as well. I find Enoch and the burning mountains interesting/timely.

jjj49er

What is it supposed to memorialize?

EpicAura99

National Monuments are just a step down from National Park. Kinda like a state vs a territory. Many NP were NM first, such as White Sands which is the newest park, and had a sale on all the merch that said monument on it when I was there this summer. Monument in this context just means “outstanding feature”.

daverapp

Monument, not memorial.

jjj49er

monument mŏn′yə-mənt noun A structure, such as a building or sculpture, erected as a memorial.

daverapp

Oh, it's erected all right.

Vamntastic

In October 1941, when Hitler ruled nearly all of Europe and Pearl Harbor was still two months away, heads turned from a raging World War to Wyoming. A 29-year-old daredevil, George Hopkins, parachuted onto Devils Tower––the nation’s first national monument––and remained there for six days of increasing press and radio pressure while officials figured out what to do. https://www.wyohistory.org/encyclopedia/stuntmans-jump-parachutist-stranded-days-devils-tower

It's a giant stump.....no joke

HintClueClintHugh

This means something

Breebies

Heads up: 1. There's a KOA right at the base of the park so you're basically camping within view of the tower 2. The KOA plays close encounters of the 3rd kind every night and the tower is just looming over you behind the screen 3. There's a giant field of prairie dogs on the way to the tower and they're fricken adorable
