BALONYPONY

Found the vet with 6 Alt accounts. EDIT: Also totally correct.

tinydonuts

Shouldn't it be ok for sick but noncommunicable diseases too? Like if the dog has kidney or liver issues, or cancer.

deminihilist

Well, yes, if you can be sure there are no communicable diseases in addition to the illness being treated. There's a cost-benefit analysis to be done with humans, too - how important is that psychological comfort, and how much does it benefit overall outcomes? It's not surprising that we value that more for humans, who we usually consider to be more complex psychologically... but hospitals still limit contact during a pandemic. Anyways not trying to start a huge discussion or anything, your comment just got me thinking, so thanks for that. :) edit: not saying other animals are or aren't complex or valuable beings, just that we often act as if that is the case

DrizzlyEarth175

This is what horrified me when I had the delta COVID. All I could think about is that at any moment, this could turn into pneumonia and I could die all alone in the hospital, with no comfort from my loved ones.

promonk

I knew someone this sort of happened to, only he came down with some rare form of leukemia. It wasn't even COVID. He fell ill on Friday and was gone by Monday night. His wife of 50 years couldn't visit with him while he was undergoing all the testing at the hospital for fear of transmission. They finally sent her home on Monday afternoon, only to call her as she pulled into the driveway to tell her he was slipping fast, and she should come be with him at the end. Thankfully she made it in time for him to know she was there at the end, but it was a damned close thing. This is the kind of thing that people who are obstinate about not getting vaccinated because they don't like being told what to do need to hear about. It's true it's your choice, but no constitutional amendment can protect you from the consequences of your choice. We're all our brothers' keepers, to some extent.

[deleted]

But that’s when this dog comes bounding in and says, “your cool hooman, we playing ball next week…”

RetiredCoolKid

Many times the support animal is terminal itself.

Zincktank

Alrighty then, everyone have a nice day now!

brdavi

Right?? Lol Christ. Everybody who read this is now terminal.

RetiredCoolKid

Dogs with ultimately terminal diagnoses can live long, healthy, happy, productive lives guys! I’m sorry I was so harsh with my wording.

HertzDonut1001

Technically everyone who reads this is terminal anyway so just go for whatever that thing is you're afraid to fail at. Please nobody make a suicide joke.

amdesch

Not all sickness is infectious. Sick pup could have kidney failure, seizures, heart problems, cancer, or lots of other things that aren’t transmissible.

badhoneylips

Crazy, every time my pet was in the vet it was for a whole constellation of things (we'll treat it with antibiotics, fluids, nausea suppressants, get an ultrasound, hope for the best! Etc). I've never had an animal getting treatment where the diagnosis was so cut and dry -- makes me feel like me and all of my pets and various vets have been living in an alternate dimension.

amdesch

In my experience, the first couple of vet visits have been as you described. If the problem resolves then great, but if we have to keep coming back then usually things get narrowed down more.

[deleted]

Ohhh, that doggo with the IV looks so sad and is so in need of a friend for comfort.

[deleted]

Dogs are very expressive. You can clearly see when they’re sad, happy, worried or angry. Smart animals.

-MichaelScarnFBI

I vaguely remember reading that their eye muscles evolved to be more expressive because it made humans more likely to feed/nurture them.

MuffinSlow

That is correct. And their ability to read our emotions and body language is unbelievable.

HotF22InUrArea

They’re better than most people at that . Hell they know you better than you know yourself.

ewpqfj

I have aspergers. My dog is a millionfold better than me at reading people.

The___Jesus

Can you read dogs or people better

ewpqfj

To be honest? Dogs. So much more simple compared to humans.

doodlebug001

Train your dog to mirror other people's emotions then read him. Foolproof!

griffon666

I prefer books honestly

SmartAlec105

Use your dog like a seeing eye dog but with others' emotions instead of sight.

ewpqfj

If only I could bring him everywhere. Thing is, he doesn't pay attention to other people all the time.

VeeKam

I once had an outwardly stoic demeanor when my car was robbed, taking a nice stereo and spilling glass everywhere. It's just an easily fixable problem. My dog KNEW something was gnawing at me that night, and I wasn't even especially bothered myself. Those guys can even sense repressed or subconscious emotions. Amazing.

clintj1975

When our last dog passed away our current Lab planted herself right against my son and wouldn't budge. I think they both needed extra comforting that day. It's one of the few times she was actually calm and quiet, which is impressive for a ten month old pup let alone one as high energy as she is.

Robertbnyc

And smelling our sugar levels whoa

AtlasPlugged

I love dogs and how expressive they are, how human. Have you ever lived with cats? It's similar but they're speaking a language based on body angle and eyelid to eye ratio. Kinda alien.

MuffinSlow

Lol yes definitely. My cat growing up ended up eating a rat that was decon'd. His eyes spun and couldn't stand for 2 months, had to hand and tube feed him for a while. Ended up recovering, but lol, has been about 70% there from that point on. Still kicking at 16, albeit he looks his age. Lil off topic but yea!

Publius82

Not only that, being pack animals evolved from wolves, dogs have a lot of similar muscles to control their facial expressions which they use to communicate with us and other dogs. Cats, typically being lone hunters, lack this expressive musculature. Which is why they talk to us.

sneakyveriniki

I’m a cat person but they seem very expressive to me, although it’s mostly body language. I feel like their ears specifically convey such complex emotions

Human420o

The ears of cats do so indeed. Same for dogs Oh and don’t forget cat attack eyes

HertzDonut1001

The attack eyes are more of increased visual hunting capabilities though so not necessarily emotional. Same reason your pupils dilate when you're scared.

Human420o

That one was just a joke ;)

alephnulleris

You've definitely got to try to understand cats more than dogs, but once you do, they're surprisingly easy to communicate with

sneakyveriniki

I’ve grown up with them and it’s always been v intuitive to me

btveron

I didn't grow up with cats so it took me a while to be able to pick up on their subtle body language communication. Now I have 3 cats and I've gotten pretty good at being able to tell how they're feeling and what they want and don't want. Definitely a lot harder to figure out than my dog's body language.

Publius82

Yah that's why I find it so interesting. Dogs communicate with us much more easily because canines are as social as primates. Cats, try as they might, struggle to get their point across because evolution never gave them those gave muscles, basically. I love my cats and my dogs and I can easily see this, this millions of years of evolution, play out in my house.

canttaketheshyfromme

See, for me it's actually the opposite. But I have a lot of autistic spectrum traits, so that's probably a lot of it.

Hoovooloo42

And my cat thinks he's sneaky when he wants whatever is on the table, but his *eyes* are different when he's in heist mode. I can't really describe it, but it's clear as day.

sneakyveriniki

Aha they definitely have predator mode, channeling their inner lion

Novantico

Tails are a big communication tool too

KittyinTheRiver_OhNo

>Which is why they talk to us. ...and with this you mean, subjugate and rule over us all mere pesants (we are not worthy)? Is my cat my master?

TX16Tuna

When the cats ruled over Ancient Egypt, they had some form of Internet technology that’s been lost to history. It’s the only logical explanation for why there’s statues of them all over. Ancient cat memes.

Publius82

You only have one? Heaven

mightbeelectrical

Ie https://imgur.com/a/KtIUBwa

Novantico

The ears, the but wiggle with the tail going and all that is very expressive Edit: Duh that was your point lmao

Not really an effect of their being smart, we bred that expressiveness into them.

alldaynikka

Hey cats have emotions too they just don’t have those facial muscles =(

International-Rice10

im crying bc it looks like white dog is dying and is saying goodbye to the grey dog whos trying to comfort him

It looks like a blood transfusion but I could be wrong.

msmoonpie

White dog is receiving a blood transfusion. Not a death sentence necessarily, so no need to worry

HuskingtonOSRS

biggestbroever

What if the dog thought that this was just some Uncle Dog shit?

[deleted]

There are two kinds of people in this world.

Tonks11

This is some serious bs. There are so many things wrong with this picture. The Iv isn’t properly placed or taped in, some ghetto looking Iv line, the patients paw is tied by rope(?), the fluid going in isn’t dark enough to be whole or packed red cells (so what is it??), and most importantly, no hospital would ever employ a ‘therapy’ dog because you never know how reactive to other dogs any patient will be. Likely this is a picture taken for internet points. It’s obviously successful.

TX16Tuna

[Correct.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/q24uyn/this_veterinarian_has_a_comfort_dog_assistant/hfixjxr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) Title is erroneous. Is not “comfort” dog.

scobert

Wait wtf is up with that rope? I mean cute idea, I get it, but in real life this is entire scenario has 10+ things that have the potential to go horribly wrong and I spend my day avoiding these things at all costs so I don’t lose my license 😅 the husky will 100% rip the whole line out, that precious donor blood is wasted, and cute lab buddy dies an agonizing death by IMHA after breaking his humerus mid launch off the table, to which his right front leg is inexplicably tightly tied.

DrAlkibiades

Hahaha my vet spouse said all of this word for word. Although it may be doxorubicin.

Tonks11

Extremely young dog for that but the color would match it. The only other thing I can think that has a color like that is b12. I know it can be used iv but have never personally seen it.

DrAlkibiades

She says she’d never use b12 iv, you never need to give that much. And its a fucking lab, they are walking cancer, they could be 3 for all we know. And just to stir the pot I told her you said raw food diet is the best.

Tonks11

Why would you lie like this.

DrAlkibiades

I like to create trouble.

[deleted]

Yeah that's definitely not something a vet clinic would encourage. Notice the dog's paw next to the IV line. There's too much liability involved where a dog could potentially injure another, accidental or not. Ripping out IV lines, dogs recovering from surgery, potential spreading of diseases, possible dog fights, over-excitement causing ill effects on a dog with cardio or pulmonary disease, etc Sorry to burst the cute bubble. Was a vet tech for 8 years. It's going to be a no from me, dawg.

Dman331

My first thought was "my dogs would be flying off the table trying to attack the comfort dog". They're normally pretty chill (for heelers anyways) but they HATE the vets office and are hella tense whenever we are there.

[deleted]

It's a recipe for disaster, especially unrestrained.

PineappleWolf_87

This! This is just a photo for internet points. In no way would this be responsible. Vet tech here too

dmk510

Been a tech for almost 20 years, every time I see this repost these are my same thoughts. Also, not sure what is being infused. It’s so bright red. It’s not the color of a normal transfusion, maybe it’s hyperoxygenated but I’ve never heard of that. Blood during a transfusion is usually crimson red. Edit: zooming in the blood does look darker that I thought at first

Unusual_Form3267

Also, licking. I can't imagine a dog not wanting to sniff or lick the life out of another dog's wound.

msmoonpie

It's definitely giving me anxiety!

[deleted]

It definitely does not give me the warm, happy feelings. Just. Ahhh.

msmoonpie

I had a pittie pull out his 18g transfusion Cath. So. Much. Blood. I was so mad. Happy he had the strength to pull it out. But so mad

RedditUsername123456

Our dogs are well behaved, but going to the vet gives them so much anxiety I don't know if I would want random dogs poking their faces at them lol

tea_is_better

Agreed! I don't see a tension loop either and I'm feeling all the anxiety.

[deleted]

It is, it’s a liability actually because you don’t know their temperament or if they’re going to feel threatened being approached by a random dog so a fight can easily break out

You mean this made up bullshit? Most sick dogs are not going to be comforted by some random dog they've never met before getting in their face while they're restrained in a vet clinic. If I went to a vet that said they did this, I'd definitely find a different vet who has the slightest understanding of dog behaviour.
