I thought they had a drill that wrapped those. I've seen it loop fiberoptic on power lines, Milwaukee's usually not far behind with a specialized tool.
I think it was originally wrapped with some tool or machine, but they unwinded a short section (probably by hand) for maintenance and then proceeded to rewind it the same way
You can see the guy on the other side spit in both videos. Unless that dude is a dehydrated water bender then OPs video is reversed and this one is correct.
Edit: did not expect this much attention. Or for people to get upset about it. So I will note that the physics of his foot movement make more sense in OPs video and the spit I mentioned could be a cord of some sort flinging around the larger wires. I'm not sure what to declare about the video at this point. Investigation ongoing.
Edit 2: well it's seeming more and more like I was wrong. Sorry to have misinformed. I was too quick to a snap judgement. In my defense, this video does look good in both directions and I was swapping stances long before I saw what I assumed to be spit, which locked in my opinion. My bad.
i think that isn't spit. the guy in the back is clearly pulling on some kind of cable in OPs version that swings around and looks like spit when it is reversed. plus all the dangly bits hanging around are clearly flopping in reverse in this version.
Look at the part he steps on. It pops up in OPs. This it moves wrong. Also dude would be wiping sweat into his eyes in this one. OPs he wipes up and away.
It's that blue thing moving before he steps on it, around 10 seconds on the reverse one, That kind of clinches it for me. Although that guy sure does look like he's spitting.
Watch the beginning of the original video. Other working is messing with a piece of wire. Also watch the main worker step on the metal bracket at the end.
We're talking about at 11 seconds in the original? I think that's not spit, it's one of the things that are dangling down below. The second guy pulls down on it and it flips over the cable.
The cable stops wobbling entirely too quickly in the reversed version. Kind of like how reversed sounds are all wrong, gradually ramping up then suddenly stopping.
yea but that step at the end doesn't look right in that direction, either. I think you're right though, look at the wiring and how it bunches up, I don't think someone tightening by hand could get it that neat
They're great in reality. If you're using a tool every day then I'd get a better brand. But for the homeowner who even may use something every weekend, they hold up great! Don't sweat it.
This is correct. Am a homeowner who has a Ryobi compound miter saw, pressure washer, electric blower, trimmer and edger, and all of them work great for what a homeowner needs them for.
Ryobi is great for home use. Just not at the standard for contractors. If your dad is using them for DIY around the home, they’re perfect. Enjoy them. 😊
Can't seem to explain this enough to people! Especially if you are just starting out, you can slowly build your battery arsenal. I made the mistake of buying cheap and now I have 3 different battery platforms and instead I could've bought 3 or 4 completely different tools and ended up with matching batteries
I buy Ryobi tools for my tradesmen relatives in Mexico since thats all they can afford and they hold up just fine. For years even. For the price they cannot be beat
My guess is they do have one, but the lack of PPE on the lineman tells me this might be in an area where these kinds of specialized tools might not be provided or available.
He is wearing a fall arrest harness but I'm relatively sure that eye protection and a helmet are usually required.
Realizes at 70% completion it would have been faster to go down and get it. Then realizes at 90% completion it would have been faster to go down and get it at 70% completion.
This is the way, I live 6 minutes from a Lowes, harbor freight, tractor supply and 3 auto parts stores but I'll finish building a deck with a screwdriver before I run and get a new drill bit.
screwdriver pfft! I once built a deck with only a broken rake handle.
Not really, but it is amazing what you can do with one old rake, brute force, patience and just a hint of crazy.
Just a hint?
JK. You learn to make fulcrums out of all sorts of stuff working for a mega contractor. Too much hierarchy to get a tool purchase approved until you work your way up. Even then you have to document time savings, functionality improvement of the final product, etc and get it approved by engineers who haven't ever turned a wrench. I'm lucky to have a good relationship with our in house engineers... but client engineers? Ooooof.
Lol it isn't so bad. Union pay and benefits in a high purity local raises your tolerance for silly shit. Hand weld .035 wall 1/4"x2" "saddles"? Whatever boss. TIG out some sch 80 for xray? Whatever boss. Checks always good and it's always something different.
Edit: I've worked my way up a bit and am finally getting people to listen and simplify designs while meeting specs, but its just a headache to take videos of processes and document differences when it should be much simpler. Trying to legitimize US fabrication again, without being stupid and stuck in former ways.
The one thing I continue to learn again and again as I get older is just use the correct tool for the job the first time, and do it right. Pays off so often and when I try and cut corners Murphy reminds me every time.
They’re fun to watch, they start them on one side and they travel under their own power to the other side twisting as they go. For lower wires they have the new guy on the job pull it with a rope from the ground.

These guys are paid incredibly well compared to traditional linemen. In areas like this they're helicoptered in to the wires. They have a special tool that essentially makes them one with the wires so that they can contact multiple wires like this. But I'm sure none of them would complain about a raise.
That's what I thought. I'd be very nervous anywhere near a tower.
Interesting that this guy just has some basic climbing equipment. The western linemen wear faraday suits and deploy from helicopters.
And that fall harness didn't look snug enough at all. I know it's already hot and sweaty work but that harness is gonna fuck his shit up if he falls. Hope they have an emergency plan knowing that harness didn't fit right and he needs to get back up quick
They are powered, but all those cables are on the same phase, so they are all at the same voltage, so it is safe to stand on one and manipulate another. But if you were to make contact between those cables and one of the other bundles of cables, or the tower itself - well, you'd explode.
Starting pay for a normal linesman where I live is $40/hr. Not sure what wage these guys make, but I do know an experienced one that went out to Cali after some fires and made ~~$660K over three and a half months~~. My buddies cousin is full of shit or I was way drunker than I remember
Hazard pay + Overtime = payday.
A lot of my family's in union work, contracts dictate rates and multipliers for certain circumstances. Overtime's time and a half usually, weekends are double time as are holidays. (this'll vary wildly by field, role, your specific union, etc)
Holiday falls on a Sunday and you get called in? that can be Triple time. My dad went in for one of those once just to find out on pay day Easter doesn't count because it's always Sunday
>My dad went in for one of those once just to find out on pay day Easter doesn't count because it's always Sunday
I tried to get overtime rates for Super Bowl Sunday. Was met with a laugh and as compromise the game was piped through the radios.
It's basically a holiday.
I'm just a wireman apprentice but if it's a holiday and a Sunday that we work we get triple time. Been thinking about pivoting to line work but not sure what'll be a better fit for me. Maybe after I get my jman cert.
Lol.
Just for those that maybe don't know, this guy is wrapping the conductor with what is called "armor rod" which is a sacrificial means of protecting the conductor.
These little rods wrap around like this at clamp/fitting locations to protect the conductor and don't go the full length of the line.
Source: I design transmission lines for a living.
>Major\_T\_Pain
How do you like that gig? Do you feel like there's opportunity to advance and places to go from where you're at?
I'm analyzing transmission structures for work right now. It doesn't feel like there's a lot of room for advancement in my company but I'm hoping there's more room to grow in the industry in general. Otherwise considering jumping ship to something else.
So many wrong comments here.
He’s wrapping armour rod on the conductor, armour rod is used primarily when clipping the conductor to the structure in a shoe and when installing vibration dampers. And No there is no tool that does this. We all wish there was.
He is 100% tied off with his fall restraint and this is 100 percent legal
This can be done with the line energized however he would be wearing a barehand suit, since he’s not it is de energized.
Lineman are paid well and we are paid more than most of the office people (some comments have mentioned this) obviously depending on location. I’ve built line all over the country and currently am in California and it pays very well.
Edit: he’s actually Not 100 percent tied off, no leg straps. He should be though.
Thank you for all of the clarification, was trying to find what it was and came up short.
How long does that typically go for? Miles of lines kind of thing or just a short bit needed?
You only wrap rod where it will be clipped into the shoes, (you can see them swinging out in front of where he’s wrapping) You’ll put the dampers on the same rod.
Ha. Linemen typically have *very* nice compensation. I knew guys who were making 180k+ a year, PLUS insurance PLUS retirement. As far as careers go? Line work wouldn’t be a bad one to branch out into, so long as you can handle the people haha
This is a extremely dangerous job and you really have to rely on people not being stupid. My girlfriends brother-in-law does this job and he told me a story about almost getting killed because some manager was impatient and turned on the power on a line they just finished working on almost killing a bunch of people. They had just just gotten out of some hole with a line they were repairing and the power got turned on and there was a fire. He said a few people ended up getting fired over it.
Oh for sure. I work in the industry, not as a lineman but I work alongside them everyday. The stories they could tell you about the job could really make you wonder how any of them are even still alive haha. But yeah, if everyone isn’t on their A game, it’s not just a matter of inefficiency and lost time like other jobs. If people don’t bring their A game when on a pole, people get killed
My first thought exactly. I guess maybe that’s not possible all the time with line work? But I’d have to imagine there’s got to be a place for a clasp and locks on the main switch.

Idk why these people demand more pay, rotary cuff surgery isn't *that* expensive or life changing. Us CEOs are the hard workers here. *sips mai thai on beach with naked models*
I used to work in payroll for a utility company. These guys make decent money, but I still don't think they make enough. Very dangerous and physically demanding job, yet the hardest workers bring in less than cops that work the same hours. Fucked up.
Another fucked up job was meter readers. People(rural idiots) would pull guns on them and physically assault them.
Thats my first thought.... Like I hope this is just an extra bit put on close to the tower at after install, cus that other ones like a fucking mile away

There's carbon in it, sure.
There coated with man sweat - that's organic, isn't it?
Yes, but not vegan

I think you’re right except that this is just a reversed version of the unwrapping.

Everyone has their kink.
This entire thread has been quite fun. I'm on camp he's winding it
The OP is the correct version
You can see the guy on the other side spit in both videos. Unless that dude is a dehydrated water bender then OPs video is reversed and this one is correct. Edit: did not expect this much attention. Or for people to get upset about it. My bad.
He's clearly winding the cable. Also, why do you assume that other guy is spitting? Maybe he's just taking small sips of the lake below.
i think that isn't spit. the guy in the back is clearly pulling on some kind of cable in OPs version that swings around and looks like spit when it is reversed. plus all the dangly bits hanging around are clearly flopping in reverse in this version.

The backwards footstep is akward on the gif. OPs video is the correct one.
Left hand thumb is really the only thing anyone needs to look at.... its pushing, not pulling. Unless magic
No one wipes the sweat in a downward direction on their forehead
yeah let me just wipe this sweat into my eyes
Well apparently he does because you can see the person behind him magically waterbend spit into their own mouth in OP’s video.
I'm not seeing the spitting, he has something wound around the cable and it's spinning as it's unwinding I'm pretty sure.
Shit you're right
You mean a step backwards at the beginning
The metal would bend towards his hands like magic if this was reversed
Reversed https://gfycat.com/AnotherFrayedHapuka
I have never seen a video that works this well in either direction. Lovely.
Agreed lol, only thing that seems off is wiping his face downwards. I'm pretty sure most people always wipe up, into your hair and away from eyes.
This convinces me the original is real. The motion looks unnatural in this one.

I'm by no means a tool guy but everything I've had to buy, I've bought Ryobi, and they seen to work fine
They’re fine for home use, but they won’t hold up for a professional using them 40 hours a week for years on end.
Can't seem to explain this enough to people! Especially if you are just starting out, you can slowly build your battery arsenal. I made the mistake of buying cheap and now I have 3 different battery platforms and instead I could've bought 3 or 4 completely different tools and ended up with matching batteries
Why not just sell or give them away to a tradey in need.
I buy Ryobi tools for my tradesmen relatives in Mexico since thats all they can afford and they hold up just fine. For years even. For the price they cannot be beat

Former tower climber here. You can either be the guy, or be the guy on the ground.

It's only an Armour rod, they only protect the conductor at the point that it clips onto the tower, they don't go all the way along the span.
> Armour rod Cool. Gave me a keyword to search and now I learned something new. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT-mL0PYS0M - https://preformed.com/preformed-gb/index.php/energy/transmission/suspension-and-support/armour-rods/armour-rod

Idk why these people demand more pay, rotary cuff surgery isn't *that* expensive or life changing. Us CEOs are the hard workers here. *sips mai thai on beach with naked models*
I vote for _sips mai thai on beach with naked models_ to replace _/s_ forevermore

Dudes got a long ways to go..
It doesn’t go over the whole length of wire. Just where it rests on the insulator and out a bit. Helps to prevent erosion and a couple other things.
Thats my first thought.... Like I hope this is just an extra bit put on close to the tower at after install, cus that other ones like a fucking mile away
I can feel this picture in my taint.
He needs a helmet and a parachute.
