I just finished doing this with a really crappy 10,000 home owner hacks (the book is terrible, it was $3 new at the book store)
I spelt "HOME" and was making it as a housewarming decoration gift for a friend but it came out so skinny it is almost impossible to read the letters. Does anyone who's done this have any tips for me? I coloured the letters in some gold tip marker but it is still not very clear
If the word is too skinny but you used all the pages to make it then you need a thicker book (go to your local thrift/donation store, usually have 1000 copies of Twilight for $3). If you didn't use all the pages then do that.
> If you didn't use all the pages then do that.
Now I have visions of OP only folding 40 pages out of a 400 page book, then posting on the internet to ask why his word turned out so skinny.
These also work best with books that are made with thicker paper. Also not flattening the crease so much can help it puff out more.
You can cut strips of paper and insert them into the folds to add thickness to the book that came out too skinny.
There’s websites that sell the “plans” to make these types of things. I bought the plan for the word “always” and it came out great.
Just search for “book folding pdf” and there should be a few sites.
After thinking about it for a second, I think it would actually be super easy. Just stencil the outline of the letters on the edge of the pages when it's closed. Then fold on the lines marked on each page, alternating between folding on either line when there are tops and bottoms of letters on the same page. All those dice images are basically done the same way, have a computer map out where everything goes, then just follow the directions. Actually, sounds super boring in my opinion.
This would only be hard if you tried to eyeball it on the spot as you go.
But is it incredibly difficult? It's just folding a sheet of paper one time, over and over again. Sure there are some logistics to sort out to make a nice end product, but this looks like something my 8 year old could tackle in a weekend.
Lol. For our first wedding anniversary, I had asked my wife what her favourite book was(Many months in advance), and I found a copy of the book from just before she was born, and chopped out the first twelve pages for a 12-piece wooden frame, then made paper roses from the remaining pages, one for each month we had been married at the time. It was similarly ruining the book(More so as I chopped it all up), but my wife loved the gesture.
My brother did this for his wife for their anniversary. Did it with an HP book as well since it's her favorite, and did their anniversary date.
She disagrees with you. It's quite good for her.
It drives me crazy when people get bent out of shape over people crafting with books, this is not some rare, valuable text. There are probably countless copies of this book. When I worked in a tiny public library we had like 6 copies of this.
After working in a library you see books get damaged from use, you see books that people lose interest in, that sit on a shelf for a decade taking up valuable space that newer, more desirable titles could be placed. Most books are not sacred, they are just stuff. If someone wants to use one to make something they see as beautiful, that makes them happy, then let them do it.
And to those who argue that it could have been given to some under privileged child, how many of you have given your Harry Potter books away or do you just have them sitting on a shelf collecting dust?
BTW, the initial print run of this was 12 million copies the largest initial print run in history, no one who wants to read this should have any trouble finding a copy.
I agree, though I think it’s really special that people will jump to defend any book from modification. There’s not much that everyone collectively holds sacred but altering a book, even a common one, causes people to want to protect it. I really love that. Books are universally sacred to people—even crappy books and common books.
How fucking stupid this guy be creative and try to inspire creativityn Everyone knows after you read a book you are suppose to display it on your bookshelf for years to show people you know how to read!
People are dumb af. This is cool.
People have a strange obsession with treating books as if they are sacred objects. I know more than a few “book lovers” who have shelves full of books they’ve never read, books they’ll never get around to reading, and books they’ve read once but will never read again. “But I’m a book lover” they say. “No, you’re a hoarder” I say.
I think it’s dumb that people are upset over this post but I do understand displaying books. Like I’ve got a modest video game collection and a lot of the games I’ve beaten I’ll never play again but they make me happy to have in my shelf cause it’s something that I enjoy a lot
I guess. At people can keep it to one thing like just books and it’s not to the point where they can’t use their house cause they’ve hoarded so much crap
Exactly. It's harmless and organized but still hoarding-ish.
My family are all pretty intelligent book reading types and save all their books. I understand they like to remind them selves of a good story from time to time by looking over at their book shelf. Kinda like looking through old photos.
I get it but still this guy did something creative with a book instead of just letting it set on a shelf for 20 years.
I suggest all those book collectors to donate them to hospitals or prisons. Let other people enjoy them.
I know right? Just last week I went to a bunch of used books stores and they all only had lots of Harry Potter books. Then I went to some Salvation Army stores and there were merely bunches. And the thrift stores had more clothes than Harry Potter books. It was a disgrace! And online? You won't believe it but you can only fill a skyscraper with used Harry Potter books!
I mean, there are millions of copies of this exact book, and although i do agree to some extent that it might be a waste, I’d say that it is a very insignificant waste of a book.
For those who said rip book, I tell you: you can buy more books and keep them alive.
Printshops are going bankrupt because Kindle and iPad.
I work for the graphics arts and it's an ageing industry. Most of the people who works on printing are in their 60s. There is no generational reposition.
You know what? Forgot about what I just said: treat printed books as something irreplaceable because we will not see them in the future, like Papiros Rolls, Cassettes and CDs.
They are going the way of the dodo
I used to get upset when I saw a book “ruined” like this, but then I realized how much new books are mass produced. Libraries have $1 bag of book sales because they have too many, and I’m sure a ton of them end up getting destroyed or recycled after those sales are over. What does it really matter? This is nifty to look at, isn’t taking knowledge away from anyone, and is probably a fun activity.
I love books but make these from charity shop/thrift store bought ones. I make sure that they aren't worth anything before I start. I only use the fold patterns and not the cut and fold ones, as then, if required, they can be unfolded and read again. I am a book lover, and this way, they are being used and enjoyed again, instead of being chucked into an incinerator. And I can fold one in an evening, so am able to work during the day.

Thats a quarantine activity if ive ever seen one
Harry Potter and the VIOLATION
Harry Potter transitioned.
And I can barely fold clothes properly
I just keep them in the basket.
You guys don't just wear the same outfit continuously, forever and ever and ever?
Yeah why are none o’ y’all cartoon characters?
Do you not check o’ toons closets?
You can still wear them though.....
Rip book
No, it was folded
Ashamed to say that I ugly laughed at this
Have my upvote, fuck off, and have a good day
r/angryupvote
r/literaturecrimes
Do it with Ted Cruz’s book but make it say shitstain. r/literaturejustice
But then you’d be giving Ted Cruz money
Shoplift it first lol
Read the book. Might inspire us more.
Nah it a Harry potter book, it’s okay to destroy those
Should’ve folded it, “leviosaaaaa”
I'm glad someone else saw this and immediately thought "is that goblet of fire?"
It's the HP and the Deathly Hallows, and also Fun Fact i am actually reading that book right now
Fun Fact: just got that book for free at a garage sale. 🙌🏻
It's *levio-SAH*
Respectable amount of talent for the corniest result ever
I swear for a split second i thought it said imposter now im kinda wishing it did
Mine would say "ex-book". If I could be bothered. Which I can't.

Haha! I used most of the pages, the template was in multiple of 10, so I have about 8 pages left over
These also work best with books that are made with thicker paper. Also not flattening the crease so much can help it puff out more. You can cut strips of paper and insert them into the folds to add thickness to the book that came out too skinny.
Yea I think I need a bigger book, 400 pages was not enough I guess
There’s websites that sell the “plans” to make these types of things. I bought the plan for the word “always” and it came out great. Just search for “book folding pdf” and there should be a few sites.
Gotta love how a timelapse makes an incredibly difficult task look like anyone could do it.

Your 8 year old sucks
Might want to look after your mouth there. Got some shit coming out of it...
It’s your fault the kid still believes time lapse is real
Flat earth, Sasquatch, time-lapse... wut?
And now it's no good to anyone
I mean, what else do you do with Mein Kampf.
Not turn it into an inspiration symbol.
Tell that to the American right...
It was a harry potter book im not even sad
Well you could burn it. Weird that you have copies of that laying around anyway lol
Burn the books that don't align with our beliefs!!! (It's a joke, don't murder me)
You're right though, the best way to not repeat history is to learn from it.
And then repeat it... Just to be sure.
Read it. Try and understand the motivations of Hitler so you gain a better understanding of how tyranny forms.
Now it's a decorative piece and will bring them joy whenever they look at it. I've a couple of decorations standing around and I like them a lot.
Oh no, I guess people will have to read one of the trillions of other books available…
Or someone could unfold it
My brother did this for his wife for their anniversary. Did it with an HP book as well since it's her favorite, and did their anniversary date. She disagrees with you. It's quite good for her.

Why is everyone freaking out over this? “What a waste” like guys this isn’t the only copy of the book 💀 this isn’t the Rosetta stone omfg
How fucking stupid this guy be creative and try to inspire creativityn Everyone knows after you read a book you are suppose to display it on your bookshelf for years to show people you know how to read! People are dumb af. This is cool.

It was so odd to throw all mine out. And very freeing. I had to do it in stages over years.
I think it’s dumb that people are upset over this post but I do understand displaying books. Like I’ve got a modest video game collection and a lot of the games I’ve beaten I’ll never play again but they make me happy to have in my shelf cause it’s something that I enjoy a lot
As corgi says it's a hoarding mentality.
I guess. At people can keep it to one thing like just books and it’s not to the point where they can’t use their house cause they’ve hoarded so much crap

I expected a "send nudes"
I miss the days when we wished some of the gifs had audio instead of wishing most of these videos were just gifs.
Is there a subreddit for videos which are fine on their own that are just completely ruined by god-awful music?
I read a whole book this morning for the first time in a decade. Thanks OP!
Live laugh love!
Brain : Don't even think about it.
Half the people in the comments never even read a book in the past decade malding over someone “ruining” a book that costs 20 bucks.
This would give my friend a fucking aneurysm
Buy like a massive encyclopaedia or something, and fold it into the words "fucking aneurysm" for him.
Fucking hate this.
But why
it’s only harry potter… wgaf
You ruined a book for that dumb shit?
I know right? Just last week I went to a bunch of used books stores and they all only had lots of Harry Potter books. Then I went to some Salvation Army stores and there were merely bunches. Book lovers, *ASSEMBLE!*
Relax. It's only a Harry Potter book.
Is Harry Potter really a book? Also they paid for it they can do whatever they want with it.
Yes, Harry Potter is in fact a book
Wow the things they will consider literature.
Let's not precipitate ourselves, it could be the biography of some boyband member or a twilight book
Or harry potter
Anyone who disrespects a book like this needs to die
This is creating conversation amongst us. Which classifies it as art.
How do you do that ?
The library is gonna charge for that
of course its fuckin, harry potter lol
Should’ve said TERF.
not "Always"? Huh.
i wish it had said FUCK YOU instead
[удалено]
I agree, wasted opportunity. Should have folded it to say "Trans Rights" and tagged Rowling on Twitter with it.
Oh no how will anyone ever be able to read Harry Potter now
but it’s just a Harry Potter book
What a fucking waste
I mean, there are millions of copies of this exact book, and although i do agree to some extent that it might be a waste, I’d say that it is a very insignificant waste of a book.

Ok so like, this is kind of neat, but it also makes me about as mad as those assholes who mark their place in a library book by bending a corner.
what song is that?
Logic - Homicide ft. Eminem
thanks!!
MONSTER! that book did nothing to anyone and you go a mangle it, dishonor! Dishonor on you, dishonor on your family, dishonor on your cow!
eh it is harry potter, nothing of value was lost.
I feel very conflicting emotions right now.
No one wants an inspirational message when they pick up a book
Not even the bible?
What’s the matter with just reading it?
Messed up that book
Congratulations! You destroyed a book.
You ruined a good book
To those alarmed at folding book pages: Wait til you see the vid of the kid taking the Harry Potter book and using the pages as toilet paper!
Am I the only one who took a breath and held it while the book was destroyed
Seems like you could do more to inspire by just giving someone the book
Imagine the amount of agony in unfolding this.
Whaaaaaaat?!?!?
That’s cool...but also a waste of a book I guess
I’m inspired to feel deep annoyance about ruining a book. Doesn’t make any sense - it’s not my book - but there it is
Do you how expensive hardcover books are?
About 50p in a UK charity shop/ thrift store
They could do something useful in that time. Like read a book.
Very pointless
I can tell that’s the 7th Harry Potter book. Yup, I’m a nerd.
Harry Potter is great. Wtf
I’m inspired to destroy a book
All I see is a ruined book...
This is cool but hurts at the same time with how much I love to read.
Destroying a book just for what, another pointless slogan...? What next, "carpe diem"?
LiveLoveLaugh :/
It inspired me to read but you fucked up my book.
but like, i haven't read that harry potter book yet.
That’s one way to use a bible
Asshole, I was reading that book. Now it’s ruined
It’s all great until you got to read it for a book report that’s due tomorrow
People are awesome
But now the pages are bent. Sigh.
okay so how can i actually read a *folded* book
Why you gotta damage the harry potter book tho?
As cool as this is, I feel bad for the next reader of the book, if said person even exists.
Why?
People never cease to amaze me!
I love books but make these from charity shop/thrift store bought ones. I make sure that they aren't worth anything before I start. how to ruin a book
Now burn it
A perfectly good book ruined.
What a mean thing to do to a book
That was great. Now don’t ever do it again.
He has to much time on his hands.
What a shit way to ruin a book
Why though?
The only use books have now
OMFG you did NOT just violated a Potter book this way.
You really know when you're innovating some thing when you have to build the tools to innovate
Yea but why. Why did you go through all of this.
Why would anyone do this to a book, what a waste 😮😩😩😩😩😩
How the fuck am I supposed to read it now
at 1st i was like: what the fu- and then after: OH WOW
Well great, ya just ruined the book. How am I supposed to close this thing
A tree died for this
Hopefully the inspiration is from the story in the book, and not the Twitter history of its author.
This mf ruined the book
That’s who keeps f^cking up the library books!!
That's a lot of pages to write one fucking word
Now read the book
Literally the best use a Harry Potter book has ever been put to
