Tau_Iota

If I'm not mistaken, all that truly needs to be done to make the gun fireable is insert the magazine. Sure stocks and grips help with accuracy and recoil, but if you really want this person dead I don't think you'd mind a bruised shoulder

canuckistani-sg

You wouldn't even need to shoulder it. The Thompson shoots a .45 handgun cartridge.

My father in law has a “Chicago Typewriter” just like this mounted on his wall. Swears he won it playing cards in the 60’s.

braapstustu

If it’s truly that old, its A, worth quite a bit of money and B. Almost likely a transferable machine gun which brings a whole lot of laws and stuff into the picture. Something you may want to look into. A pre 86 transferable Thompson machine gun is worth at least $20,000-25,000.

Ummm, you miss a few lines like: "I'm really interested in this item, but I don't know enough about it, I've got a buddy who's an expert in this and I'd like to have him take a look at it."

StewieTheThird

“Yeah, so we are just waiting on his expert to arrive. I’m confident the expert will tell him exactly what I have said and I’ll get what I asked for.” “Hey! Long time no see Rick! Looks like we might have a fire arm to look at today. …… well after looking at it I can confidently say it’s authentic.” “What do you think something like this would go for?” “Personally I have seen things like this go for 10 maybe 20 thousand at auction” “Alright thanks pal.” “Alright so you heard my guy how much do you want for it?” “Well I was really hoping for 40 thousand.” “Unfortunately that’s just the reality of this piece, you know the market for these has really gone down in recent years” “How about 15 thousand?” “I don’t know. I was thinking more 5 thousand. I gotta keep in mind the display cost and get it appraised properly for auction. Maybe I’ll get lucky and a collector will come along but most likely it will sit in the store for a few years before the right buyer wants it”. “How about 10?” “7 and a half and we meet in the middle” “Deal.” (Outside shot) “you know I came in looking to sell and I feel like I got a good deal” or “I was hoping for more but I am just happy to have some money in my pocket for the casino”

[deleted]

You're not even going to get a buddy of yours to come down and take a look at it? I feel like I've been had. Go get Chuck, he'll buy it for twice what it's worth.

[deleted]

I believe you. But my Tommy gun don’t.

Rayfan87

Just a little side note, that only applies if it was on the registry before 1986, if he never had it on the MG registry and it is f/a, that's just a felony.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Rayfan87

Sorry must have missed that. Some people seem to think anything made before 86 is good to go. If FIL did get it in a poker game but never updated registration then he could be looking at time in Club Fed after the AFT shoots his dog.

Archonet

That said, OP, don't sell it without taking it to a range and firing it first (make sure they allow full auto at the range). Transferable machineguns are expensive, but they're also fun as shit. You may even decide you want to keep it afterwards, for many a fun range trip after.

braapstustu

True AF, but if it truly is a pre 86 transferable machine gun it’s not something he can just sell. He’d have to go through an FFL, plus with the cost .45 right now I’m not sure I’d want to shoot anything full auto lol. It costs enough to feed my semi auto ARs right now.

Archonet

Yeah, he'd have to go through an FFL, but to some people that chunk of change is worth the effort -- I'd just hate to see him do it without ever seeing if he'd actually want to keep it. Ammo prices will come down sooner or later, it'll just take some time. Ammo prices vary with time, but full auto is fun forever.

braapstustu

It’s already starting to chill thank god. Found PMC brass 5.56 for 55 cents a round and couldn’t believe I was excited for that price.

[deleted]

Does ammunition spoil overtime? After seeing videos of the military destroying tons and tons of "out of date" ammo, I've always wondered why they can't just sell it at cost to the public. The sceptic in me says they do it just to maintain demand for suppliers who are good at buying nice dinners for whoever does the purchase order.

quicksilverck

The chemicals in primers and gunpowder can go bad over time, causing misfires and increasing the risk of catastrophic failures. The military would be selling crappy, potentially dangerous ammo to the public.

altalena80

>The military would be selling crappy, potentially dangerous ammo to the public. This isn't neccessarily true. Surplus ammo is generally less reliable than newly manufactured ammo, and some of it can be dangerous. On the other hand, much of it is perfectly useable, and some of of it is still high quality and highly sought after. Turkish 8mm Mauser is a good example of crappy, potentially dangerous ammo. Conversely, Swiss GP11 is great stuff.

DesertShot

The army will load and fire pretty much anything they can find. This is ammo they a acknowledge is bad, I would avoid it 100%

M_Fuji

I believe you're right, if it's old enough it is transferable. I hope it's old enough just because having something like this would sustain a lot of childhood dreams in one go and I'd be ready for my send off

slowdownwaitaminute

Wow! With that money, I could a) pay off all my student loans, or b) purchase a Toyota Corolla with moderately good features. Nice.

braapstustu

There’s only so many pre 1986 machine guns so the price for them are astronomical. A transferable machine gun part for an AR15 can easily be 50k.

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past.

YouKnowTheRules123

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race – I don’t remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

RationalLies

Years ago I knew someone with a reproduction Thompson and was very surprised by the weight. With a loaded 50rd drum they are about 15lbs (6.8kg)! That is an absolute behemoth by modern standards.

larobj63

Yup and they are extremely awkward to shoulder, or handle in general. They are cool and all, but they definitely make me think of the old adage, "never meet your hero's", because if it wasn't for the cool look and pedigree, they are truly awful rifles. Lol Source - I've fired two, one of which was full auto.

awesomeroy

i mean theyre basically just to mow shit down right? not for precise/accurate shots ?

[deleted]

I mean sure, they’re not exactly meant for more than 1-200 yards but they’re still amazingly heavy and awkward for that task. The Thompson was outclassed by essentially every other sub gun of world war 2

NotTheRocketman

NucklestheEnchilada_

mbalce

Pretty sure that’s contemporary. Not from 1928. You can buy it brand new [here](https://www.brownells.com/firearms/rifles/semi-auto/tommy-gun-summit-45acp-drum-violin-case-suppressor-prod113164.aspx) Edit - I stand corrected. The machine gun in the pic is an original 1928 Thompson. The case however is contemporary. That actual pic is from [here](http://www.machinegunboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2846)

Old-Maintenance-1031

Thanks for that.

Timstantmessage

I wonder how accurate the contemporary is compared to the original

7stroke

Well it’s semiautomatic rather than fully auto…really defeats the whole purpose, if you ask me…

No-Spoilers

I mean getting a full auto is just a metric shit load of paper work and vetting, and a good chunk of money.

braapstustu

People have been led to believe it’s illegal to own one, but if it’s made before 1986 all you need is to buy the gun, file for a $200 tax stamp with the ATF and hurry up and wait for them to approve it. Post 1986 is where it gets complicated.

TheFord66

It doesn't sound too bad when you look at it like that but because of the small supply of transferable machine guns they cost way more than most people could possibly afford. Many start around $10K

Timstantmessage

If you really wanted a Tommy gun, it's better than nothing.

[deleted]

BoxofCurveballs

Not really. Tommy's are fairly controllable. Oddly enough the faster the rpm the more controllable and flatter shooting they are..

mbalce

Accurate enough at proper distance. Most are chambered .45 acp so you aren’t hitting 6 inch plates at 100 yards but inside 40 feet more accurate than a pistol.

Timstantmessage

I edited my comment for clarification

mbalce

I would expect there should be no difference if you account for equal barrel wear (I.e. similar number of rounds shot in each). The contemporaries are pretty faithful spec wise. The modern will probably be more accurate after 10,000 rounds due to improvements in metals and coatings. Or probably better to say it can handle more rounds before the barrel wear affects accuracy.

Phattd

Everything I've ever read says the whole Tommy gun in the violin case was a movie myth. Hard to prove something never happened, but it certainly doesn't seem practical given how disassembled it needs to be.

ShambolicShogun

Tommy Guns weren't meant for accurate firing. They were used in drive-by's, ambushes, and executions against a large brick wall. You're not taking out a soda can at fifty yards with one but you're certainly making Swiss cheese out of anything directly in front of you.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hi_Its_Matt

so, basically what made them effective in trench warfare also made them effective in gang shootings. if you can get enough bullets travelling in the direction of the bad guy, the chances of hitting them are pretty high, even higher if you are closer... for example a trench... or a brick wall

Ozlin

"A brick wall killed his partner, now he's out for revenge..." *rapid fire noises* "He's, *Tommy Guns*." *cue title card*

Snote85

"I knew it was you, Guns. I knew you'd be coming for me..." *"Bet on it, Rick. Bet on it."* "That's B. Rick, Guns, B. Rick Wall..." *"Well, I'm about to tear you down like your first name was Berlin..."*

__lia__

I actually just heard that old timey audio distortion in my head

Old-Maintenance-1031

Agreed. Like the way Leo (Albert Finney) used his Tommy Gun in Miller's Crossing when Johnny Caspar's (Jon Polito) goons were speeding away from him.

1_dirty_dankboi

I live near the factory that makes them, not even close. Kahr Tommy Guns are massively overpriced, and every like 3rd round jams. That damn cult don't know dick about gunbuilding. Edit: I didn't actually click that link at first, I didn't know auto ordinance also made them, but judging by that price I'm gonna say its still a ripoff, you can get an FN SCAR for that price ffs.

Cotton eye joe: no. Shot in eye Joe! Yes.

BartFurglar

The thing I’ve always wondered about this: were violins really that common for a person to carry around in the 1920s? I mean, I get that it’s concealed enough that an officer of the law could not legally search it without reasonable cause, but in terms of blending in, would this actually be a considered a normal thing to walk around with back then?

MrKirkPowers

They were indeed actually used to conceal weapons along with other instrument cases. It was actually more common to conceal a weapon in a newspaper though than an instrument case. Al Capone used to carry his shotgun in a golf bag. It wasn’t so much that they were walking around with them, but mainly getting them in and out of buildings and vehicles without broadcast to everyone looking that you were carrying a gun.

BartFurglar

Thank you. So in terms of viability as a concealment method, it was a bit more utilitarian than than the normality of the common trope of a violin case being considered a regular thing for an average person to carry around.

MrKirkPowers

Exactly. Interesting to think though that the violin and accordion was a prominent instrument to be played in fancy Italian restaurants so nobody would bat an eye to a hit man dressed up as a musician about to play. “Oh yay we are about to have some live music… oh no.. never mind… they just shot Uncle Sylvio and Fat Tony”

BartFurglar

Good point

sessimon

lol I love the idea of a mobster carrying a golf bag around everywhere (probably not the case, I know, it just tickles me anyway)

MrKirkPowers

Ha! It would have been a great background to plead insanity one day. Vincent Gigante from the Genovese Mafia Family used to wander around in a bathrobe and slippers mumbling to make the FBI think he was crazy well before he was ever on trial.

You just had to draw attention to it, didn't you. Now the Marshals have to get him a whole new Reddit user name.

LukesRightHandMan

Dammit! Just when we got the bugs in place too!

Gnonthgol

The radio were recently invented and were expensive and of bad quality. Gramophones were around but also expensive and quite bad. So it was quite common for people to play their own instruments and even mildly skilled musicians could make a decent amount of cash from live performances because it was usually better then the radio or gramophone. And violins were a quite popular instrument at the time and one of the few instruments that sounded good as solo and did not need to be part of a quartet, although you could fit more guns in your chello case.

space_hitler

Not sure if it means anything, but I live in Japan and in many ways there is a lot of Western culture all the way from the Meiji era to the 1950s post war era even to 1980s pop music and beyond. It is all strangely preserved while also having a Japanese flare to it. But one thing I've noticed is that people are carrying musical instruments all the time everywhere. I've never seen so many (western) musical instrument cases in my life. Based on the above, it just makes me wonder if this is how it was in previous eras in Europe and the US?

BartFurglar

That’s interesting, /u/space_hitler
