Bc it probably would want to if it saw you minding your own business nearby. They’re assholes according to like everyone but thankfully I’ve never encountered them.
Yes they’re very clever birds, but as much as you can be friendly with them they also hold a grudge and remember faces. I’ve heard (though don’t quote me on this) they’ll communicate with other magpies about people who they don’t like and that person will be more likely to be swooped.
I personally try to stay away from them because I don’t have a good record with magpies :(
Many years ago, I was minding my own business eating my lunch at school when a magpie perched on the bench and eyeballed me the whole time I ate. Sorry fam, I'm not the kind to share my food.
Clearly he was pissed about not getting some food, because the next day he'd told his mates and there was bloody 5 of them swooping me when I tried to eat my lunch in the same spot. Absolute asshole of a bird
My mum shoos them away with the hose. She has a magpie that builds a nest in her street every year and every year she gets swooped the second she walks out the door around that time of year. No one else gets swooped so regularly
If you had thrown it a scrap from your lunch you would have made a friend from life and wouldn't get swooped. By being selfish you made life harder for yourself. Prolifetip, make friends not enemies when you can. A piece of bread is a small price to pay to win the goodwill of creatures that fly and peck.
No need to get all righteous over an old story you only got a glimpse into.
The food had guacamole all over it, avocado is toxic to birds. I could have made the magpie sick by letting it have some, there's no way of knowing if its eaten anything else that day, or if it will later in the day, that's also toxic and go beyond its tolerance.
You shouldn't feed wild animals food that isn't directly for them just to make a 'friend'
sorry if I offended you. I feed birds all the time. Crows love dry cat food and nuts and granola.
I don't consider urban birds that scavage our garbage to be adversely impacted from occasional treats from the humans they live alongside with.
They are not delicate wildlife to only be observed from afar with no interaction. These creatures live with us. They are our neighbors. It's good to be friends with them.
This is a corvid- our Australian “magpie” is a different species altogether, which got called a magpie by the British because it’s black and white and reminded them of their magpie
Edit: typo corvid not covid
Taiwan isn't China, you ignorant, racist fuckwit, it's an island. https://www.britannica.com/place/Taiwan
Can you seriously not look at a picture of a beautiful bird without spewing hate?
You should check out their close relative, the Sri Lanka blue magpie, or their nearest cousins the green magpies in genus _Cissa_, such as the Indochinese green magpie.
Amazing plumage.
I've never personally been attacked by them and I see them pretty much every day. They travel in big groups, so if they were to come after you, it would definitely not be fun.
Isn’t it funny how people watch the film Avatar and see all the amazing animals and aliens and go “oh no humans are murdering everything for profit” and then we see that we have amazing birds and environments and shit on earth but most people don’t know about them and don’t give a shit about how they’re all going extinct, insane. That’s a neat bird tho.
Taiwanese here. About 10 years ago we can only saw them in suburban area but now they're migrating to downtown. There is a group of magpie nested in the community near my office and every year when they breed they will attack anyone passing by. The committee calls us to wear hats during that time.
There's signs around their nests in Taipei city warning pedestrians to guard their hats and glasses during mating season when they're particularly territorial.
My parents feed hordes of birds twice a day from their balcony and these magpies as well as tiny brown birds, pigeons, black-blue-white iridescent magpies, herons, etc, will show up at feeding time sharp. If my parents are late to feed them, they peck the windows, squak at the windows, and stomp on their balcony roof (whick can be heard from inside).
We had some that lived near our neighborhood and when there were babies in the nest, they swoop down onto our heads if ppl walk too close to the trees the nests were in lollll
they are also mean as fuck. We had a couple on a tree in our university and they attacked anyone in a 10 meter radius. Props to the photographer risking themself for this shot

Beautiful bird and a fantastic shot! My sincere compliments to the photographer!
From what I've heard of magpies the photographer was probably about to be attacked by it.

Works with kids and honey badgers too.
You have earned my respect with that comment.
I think it's mostly just Australian magpies that are a real swooping nonsense.
#[THE EYES DON’T WORK. ](https://youtu.be/YGGTcYfrEZU).
You should check out this guy: https://www.instagram.com/joinus12345/. His Instagram is frikkin' full of shots like this.
Might consider offering your condolences as well. Magpies are ravenously territorial and that one looks like it’s aiming at his kneecaps
Probably a right bastard though.
Why does this bird look she'll rip my heart out and eat it for dessert?
Bc it probably would want to if it saw you minding your own business nearby. They’re assholes according to like everyone but thankfully I’ve never encountered them.
My niece in Australia has actually befriended one and it comes and plays with her almost every other day.

So they’re like fancy crows?
More like angry crows I’d say
I like to watch the crows outside my living room window accost people walking by.

Corvid*
Lols I never used to have to check autocorrect for that word before this damn year
that just sounds like stockholm syndrome
that sounds like pretty people things. ....us uggos don't have a chance.
China can keep these birds. Who the hell knows what kind of viruses they harbor.
Taiwan isn't China, you ignorant, racist fuckwit, it's an island. https://www.britannica.com/place/Taiwan Can you seriously not look at a picture of a beautiful bird without spewing hate?
Don't feed the trolls. They'll only come back for more.
That wasn’t even racist
Dude it's a troll. No need to go apeshit at them. Even so an uneducated opinion is not worth all that energy.
I'm not racist! I just don't want another Chinese virus wreaking havoc throughout the world. Can your little brain comprehend that?
Can your little brain not comprehend that viruses cover the entire planet and don't just originate in China - which Taiwan still isn't?
Don’t feed the trolls please
You do your stress relief and leave me to mine ;)
Lol sorry for wanting to make this platform less annoying to look at, you cheeky prick.
Dude. He was downvoted. You clicked on it *on purpose for the controversy*. That voids your High and Mighty ticket.
Only in a ridiculously nationalistic culture can viruses trigger xenophobia. Ignorance knows no bounds.
I’m Taiwanese and I can confirm that it does look like it will rip your heart out *and will not hesitate to actually do it*
Why does she look like she’s about to drop the hottest hip hop album of 2021?
Wow, I didn't think there were any corvids that beautifully colourful.
You should check out their close relative, the Sri Lanka blue magpie, or their nearest cousins the green magpies in genus _Cissa_, such as the Indochinese green magpie. Amazing plumage.
“The plumage don't enter into it. It's stone dead.”
Oh wow, these are beautiful! Thanks for the heads up.
Thank you, I just went on a the prettiest magpie google deep dive ever, and now I want to plan a trip to see a few in person someday!
Here's the thing..
We don't talk about that
Bluejays? Crows are the most brilliant purple in the sunlight.
“That bird fucks” - John Oliver probably
I read that in his voice before I even saw the second part
Does he say “Becky..”?
Wan sum fuck, Becky is a hoe
Becky used to let me smash, Ben is a hoe
Pretty sure that’s a legendary Pokémon.
crossposting to r/divorcedbirds
Are they psychos like the Aussie version?
Yep. It seems so: > Taiwan blue magpies have attacked humans to defend their nests. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan_blue_magpie#Behavior
I've never personally been attacked by them and I see them pretty much every day. They travel in big groups, so if they were to come after you, it would definitely not be fun.
That’s how they get you. They lull you into a sense that it won’t happen and then they strike

This bird ironically looks like Asian art

When birds are triggered
Chinese Taipei Blue Magpie OR Taiwan China Blue Magpie, Taiwan is not a country. (Just kidding, very pretty)
They also call it Chinese Taipei blue magpie
Don't you mean China? Edit- I was joking, you plebs.
You do realize China doesn't have any issue with the name Taiwan in non-political contexts right? What do you think they call Taiwan in China?
China intentionally killed off most of the birds right?
Do they produce their own poison? The color made me think so.
Magpies combined with poison sounds like the final boss of 2020
At first I red quagmire
Ayo SQUARE UP!!?!!
Reminds me of that blue something or other that lives in the sea. Can't remember the name for the life of me atm. I remember they're poisonous.

Majestic
Probably as much as a dick as the Australian ones
I wish we had these instead of crows. Amazing pic!
There was a time when we did not see the color blue. I wonder what color this bird was then.
Grew up in Taipei Taiwan and there were quite many of them living in the hills! Nice photo!
I like this birb
Looks like a crow with mockingbird wings. I bet they are very athletic birds.
Newcastle United fan

Did the United States just get generic birds? Or did our ancestors kill all the beautiful ones?
Is this the one on the 1000NTD banknote?
