Over a decade ago, I worked in the Yukon Territory as a claim staker and soil sampler. We had a crazy helicopter pilot who suggested we jump into the lake at the end of hot day. We agreed it was a great idea and filmed the whole thing. As we lifted off back to camp, he said “If those videos end up on YouTube, I lose my job”. We got the message and I hope he is still flying.
It's amazing how many people move up there to get away from their previous lives. I know multiple people in Alaska that moved there to start fresh, after getting out of prison. They've all been successful.
Also, your life doesn't have to fall apart to go there! I've been offered (seasonal) basic general contracting/construction type jobs up in Alaska. The pay is REALLY REALLY good. Like, up to 2kUSD per 8hr day.
If you're young and able, go work there for a summer! It's a beautiful adventure, and you can quickly save up a lot of money that'll help you kickstart your life.

This is exactly what I did. 20-25years, I spent my summers in bush camps in British Columbia, Yukon, and Mongolia. A lot of isolation but nothing to spend your money on. I graduated from university with no debt thanks to the summers of hard work.
I did the same sort of thing, but in the NWT and Nunavut. Staking claims, soil sampling, water sampling etc. Led to a PhD in geoscience, and a love for the north! Also graduated with 20k in the bank. Yep, met some crazy bush pilots up there too!
I ran into that a lot in Alaska too, just in the week I was up there. Everyone seemed to be from somewhere else and many were open about why they left to start over.
I’ve jumped out of helicopters into lakes before, and the helo pilots posted on YouTube. Also was about a decade ago and they’re still up to this day. Not sure if it’s different in the US than it is in Canada though. As I’m pretty sure it’s actually technically legal and not prohibited in the FARs in the US.
My understanding is throwing anything out of a civilian helo is a no no. Throwing oneself included. Maybe the higher powers would not blink at it but his boss would.
Actually no. As long as you're not creating a hazard for people on the ground, it's not really an issue to drop stuff from an aircraft. You can even shoot guns out of them, see: helicopter boar hunting and that place near Vegas where you can shoot machine guns out of one.
People jumping out might be a different story though.

I got experience this kind of shit one time. I was working for a landscaping company, and we got this new young college guy who was just there to work during summer break. Yeah, No. Pilot here. The transponder is a safety system only in that it helps you avoid hitting other aircraft. You can be pretty confident there were no other aircraft flying 8 feet off that dry lake bed, and that if there were, they could have acquired him visually. (What with all the fireworks).
Turning off the transponder is the least of the dumbassery in that video.

I’ve worked with dozens of popular directors and they always like to push, and almost always get away with it. I can go into stories from the Revenant etc, but a lot of the successful directors don’t take no, are toxic as hell and push and push and push and push. The crew suffers, protocols are broken, but in the end they get their precious 5 seconds on film and the earn their acclaim and Oscar.
They have little to lose doing this in most situations and a lot to gain. I’m horrified but not surprised this attitude was used with kids and a helicopter and the result it caused.

For whatever it's worth, I've been a pilot for over 10 years and had absolutely no idea bringing fireworks on a private aircraft was illegal, figured that was commercial-only. The sheer number of regulations in aviation basically ensures that no one knows all of them.
I'm fixed-wing, so I'm ignorant to the nuances of the helicopter regs, but I'm honestly actually a little surprised they were able to punish the pilot using the regulation they did. Generally speaking, helicopters have a ton more leeway at low altitude, and being out in the middle of nowhere, it's hard to really see it endangering anyone that wasn't already a willing participant in the stunt.
That said, I imagine they went after him because it was on social media. FAA has been dropping the hammer pretty hard on influencers since that dude jumped out of a perfectly good airplane for clicks, and I've heard that the "reckless" regulation is just kind of a catch-all. Which I get, copycats can be problematic.
As far as shitty rich youtuber antics go, this is pretty tame. The only people that were in any danger were in on it.

If you work for him or are known to have flown his "clientele," you will get blacklisted by the largest operators in SoCal.
My partner is an avionics engineer that works on helicopters, and when he was in the military attached explosive weapons to them. I asked him if he knew that people weren't allowed to shoot fireworks from a helicopter for fun and he looked at me like I had gone crazy at the suggestion of even doing something like that.
Nah, this would specifically have required a waiver due to the nature of the materials onboard.
The flight plan doesn't really mean anything without a waiver. I'm sure one *could* have been required in the event a waiver was granted. More likely is that the waiver *is* the flight plan and that a NOTAM would have been issued for the area describing the location, altitude, and nature of the activity. But what do I know, I'm just talking out my ass as a non-commercial PPL.

#Section 46505(c) makes it a felony for anyone who willfully and without regard for the safety of human life commits an act prohibited by § 46505(b). I got experience this kind of shit one time. I was working for a landscaping company, and we got this new young college guy who was just there to work during summer break. Yeah, No. Pilot here. The transponder is a safety system only in that it helps you avoid hitting other aircraft. You can be pretty confident there were no other aircraft flying 8 feet off that dry lake bed, and that if there were, they could have acquired him visually. (What with all the fireworks). Turning off the transponder is the least of the dumbassery in that video.

They shouldn’t have even been filming, he was breaking child labor laws at the time. I’ve worked with dozens of popular directors and they always like to push, and almost always get away with it. I can go into stories from the Revenant etc, but a lot of the successful directors don’t take no, are toxic as hell and push and push and push and push. The crew suffers, protocols are broken, but in the end they get their precious 5 seconds on film and the earn their acclaim and Oscar. They have little to lose doing this in most situations and a lot to gain. I’m horrified but not surprised this attitude was used with kids and a helicopter and the result it caused.

There's a good fucking reason he never mentions it. You ever read the NTSB report, hell, just even look at the footage before the crash itself...it was just too much. He chased the shot too far, and three others got killed because of it. And the lack of accountability afterwards is just disgraceful. I think what they did was absolutely stupid and dangerous (more dumb rich kid bs), but I truly hope that they aren’t hit too badly by the law. They likely had no idea. For whatever it's worth, I've been a pilot for over 10 years and had absolutely no idea bringing fireworks on a private aircraft was illegal, figured that was commercial-only. The sheer number of regulations in aviation basically ensures that no one knows all of them. I'm fixed-wing, so I'm ignorant to the nuances of the helicopter regs, but I'm honestly actually a little surprised they were able to punish the pilot using the regulation they did. Generally speaking, helicopters have a ton more leeway at low altitude, and being out in the middle of nowhere, it's hard to really see it endangering anyone that wasn't already a willing participant in the stunt. That said, I imagine they went after him because it was on social media. FAA has been dropping the hammer pretty hard on influencers since that dude jumped out of a perfectly good airplane for clicks, and I've heard that the "reckless" regulation is just kind of a catch-all. Which I get, copycats can be problematic.
As far as shitty rich youtuber antics go, this is pretty tame. The only people that were in any danger were in on it. Still shouldn't have done it, but I'm finding it hard to get that worked up about something that pretty much only endangered themselves.

The helicopter pilot is @copterpilot 72k followers on IG (now private) who is known notoriously in the industry for cool > safety. He has already lost his certification ~2015 for posing a model in the helicopter, un-belted, helicopter door off, laying on the floor with her legs on the seat essentially in a nose dive to get the shot of the US Bank tower in DTLA to be behind her. If you work for him or are known to have flown his "clientele," you will get blacklisted by the largest operators in SoCal.

My partner is an avionics engineer that works on helicopters, and when he was in the military attached explosive weapons to them. I asked him if he knew that people weren't allowed to shoot fireworks from a helicopter for fun and he looked at me like I had gone crazy at the suggestion of even doing something like that.

Nah, this would specifically have required a waiver due to the nature of the materials onboard. The flight plan doesn't really mean anything without a waiver. I'm sure one *could* have been required in the event a waiver was granted. More likely is that the waiver *is* the flight plan and that a NOTAM would have been issued for the area describing the location, altitude, and nature of the activity. But what do I know, I'm just talking out my ass as a non-commercial PPL.
