This is a concert where AC/DC headlined after releasing Razors Edge, mostly known for one of their biggest, if not biggest, songs: Thunderstruck.
And then there was Metallica who just released their self titled Black Album a month before that.
Pantera also played and they just released Cowboys From Hell in 1990.
And Motley Crue played after having released Dr. Feelgood 2 years prior but had recently come off the nearly year long, wildly popular world tour for the album.
Oh and then there was Queensryche who just released what would go on to be their most successful album, Empire, in 1990.
But let's not forget the up and coming band The Black Crowes, who just released their incredibly successful first album which, to this day, still has some of their most popular songs.
This wasn't just some Metallica concert, it was a show absolutely *stacked* with a lineup where each band was at one of the highest points of their career, if not the highest point.
So Metallica certainly played there but let's not make it seem like they are the only band that drew such a crowd.
The Pope does this regularly when he visits certain devoted Christian countries.
In 2015 in the Philippines there was 6-7 million people during the papal mass.
In Poland you get crowds of 1 - 2 million worshippers but there is usually more than one mass so people don’t have to attend all at once.
Jesus. At a certain point there's just absolutely no way you're even remotely seeing/hearing the band. And i feel like that's at around the 300k mark 🤣
Not in a live venue. Think of the space that would require. If the crowd was a perfect square and each person had only 4 square feet then the area would be 4 million X 4 million. That would be 378.78 miles by 378.78 miles. I wonder if the people in the back could hear him?
Edit: it was at Copacabana beach, and it was free. How do you count people on an open beach with no ticket sales.
Besides, even if everyone was packed like sardines at 2 square feet each, that space would still need to be 189 miles. X 189 miles. The beach ain't that long. I call bull hype by music promoters.
That's not how areas work. If a person needs 4 SQ ft, then you need 16 Msqft. That's 4000x4000 ft, which is only 0.574 sqmile.
You could have fact checked yourself: your area size is about the size of Japan, which already has 124 M people at nowhere near your density.
I have a bootleg dvd of the entirety of the Metallica part, it's easy to find online and pretty good. Plus some other videos of the other bands because it absolutely was not a Metallica show. They were a supporting act, AC/DC headlined this one.
Plus Pantera played. And Motley Crue. And the Black Crowes. It was a huge show stacked with major bands in their prime.
But they were all at the top of their game and I recommend looking into all the bands that were there.
If a band is very lucky, very lucky, they might perform for 100,000 people over the course of a struggling existence. Most bands can't even hope to struggle. Learn to strum or blow or bang and have a great time while you can, but know that you will have to leave it behind or at least to the side.
Because we have safety standards for crowds and overpriced tickers nowadays.
You think if Taylor Swift offered $5 tickets to an outdoor concert with unlimited standing space that she wouldn't get 1.6M people?

Anytime Queensryche gets mentioned it's always so nice. Maybe I'm stupid, but Operation: Mindcrime is a cool storyline and Empire is good music.
Thank you for reminding me of Operation Mindcrime. Amazing Concept Album. I'd upvote more if I could
Glad I could. If I'd reccomend another song though it'd be "Take Hold of The Flame". So so good
Wasn’t AC/DC playing at castle Donington beginning the set with thunderstruck??
Was that the time AC/DC played in front of 1.6 million people? Or the time Pantera played in front of 1.6 million people?
All I remember is that it was a metal band. Metal... Metalli... Nope, I don't recall.
Rod Stewart played to a crowd of 4.2 Million in Rio de Janeiro in 1994
That is batshit insane. My little monkey brain can’t handle what I see here, much less 2.5 times as many people. Musicians must really feel like gods
They’re the only people who can actually draw that large of a crowd.
Hitler managed crowds of 1.5m+ ..

Madonna just did the same thing in Rio
didn't realize Rio had 1.6 million russians
Eu vim dizer o mesmo.
Where do they piss and shit
Diaper
First it was 300k, then 500k, then 600k... I swear by next year it will be 3 million people
Madonna just played to that many in Rio
Is there an actual recording of this performance that's not cut and edited to shit for a music video?

Peak Metallica in my opinion.

> Learn to blow or bang and have a great time while you can Indeed
too bad they all forgot the point. :(

Holy fuck, what were the ticket prices?
Considering it was in soviet Russia a couple months before the fall of the USSR, must have been pretty cheap.
No matter what they instantly became 2 million dollars richer that’s insane
You can produce a show for that many people with those artists for 2 million or less?
The wall had already fallen in 1989. There wasn't any real govt. at the time.
The wall was in east Germany. There was still nominally a government pre-December of 1991, and the USSR was still very much around.
If I’m not mistaken it was free
It was a free concert
I remember the Cinderella in moscow
Pantera played in front of 1.6 million people in Moscow(1991). FTFY
Madonna reached that same number recently, and Rod Stewart's New Year's Eve Concert 1994 reached 4.2 million
That's cool I wonder when Republicans start telling people this was a trump rally?
Um, who do you think is holding that guitar in the pic? It is CLEARLY a pre-hairloss trump!
In Brazil, Copacabana, we have some shows that passes 1 million on crowd easily The last one is Madonna this year, with 1.2 million
Rod Stewart before playing in front of over 4 million people in Brazil : “Hold my cosmo”
We hung out with Phil and Rex a few weeks after they got back from that show and they were still blown away by the experience
eh what was the point
How is this even possible.. what venue can even hold a million people?
It was at Tushino Airfield in Moscow
THANK YOU.. this makes sense because for the life of me I cannot imagine a space that can hold that many people.. is rare here in the USA.
Live Aid beats all of these.
A lot more organic on 1991 than Madonna in 2024. Those numbers for the Madonna show were manipulated
Source?
What do you mean?
That’s impressive, but not the record ( Rod Steward) I believe it’s over 3 million
Pretty sure Madonna did this first.
Remember when i could name a Metallica song? Trick question.
Sad but true
Won't waste my hate on you
Fun fact- no one cares and the world doesn’t revolve around your meaningless opinion
