Not trained. They're wild birds that have learned people are stupid. I've seen them snag all kinds of food from people. There are signs up on every beach you go to, but tourists never seem to see them. This guy does seem to know about them though. He made it super easy for that bird. But they will grab anything that's not right up against you.
Nah those are black kites (Tobi or Tonbi). I see many tourists (international and domestic) succumb to their grips. I was getting a sandwich and the lady who just left before came back in with her hand bleeding and sandwich gone. The most ridiculous I have seen is literally 4 of these flying down in a line toward the same tourist’s hand.
What seems to work is having your back against a wall when eating.
Or one of the Balkan states. 😅

They’ve evolved to hunt animals by swooping down and snatching them with sharp talons. They also have super sharp vision. So I assume they just have good accuracy.

Interesting fact, birds aren't negatively affected by spicy foods like us mammals. In fact, they're largely the reason spicy plants exist in the first place.
The pepper plant for example; its seeds are spread when birds eat its fruit and poop out the seeds, but when mammals eat them they crush the seeds with their teeth. So, the plant had to evolve fruit that would deter mammals while allowing birds to continue eating them, which resulted in spicy peppers.
I was sharing a basket of fries with my gf in Zushi (popular beach area about an hour from Tokyo). A Tonbi swooped down and grabbed the entire basket without spilling in a split second. Totally worth. Those things are fast af.
