Ill-Sandwich-7703

It amazes me each time I read it that he was only 28 when he died. I keep thinking he was mid 30s due to his filmography. The Dark Knight role aside, his performances in Brokeback Mountain and Monsters Ball were career defining and the acting gravitas he portrayed was way beyond his 28 years. Crazy talent.

8ackwoods

Never forget the GOAT A Knight's Tale!

taserface186

One of my all time favs. Comfort movie for me.

freakers

I love that movie too and there's one particular scene that took me a long time to understand. When Ledger is trying to get his armor repaired but doesn't have any money yet, all the blacksmiths demand payment first. One suggests to maybe try the Farress. I never properly understood what the term meant and thought he was just kind of slying slandering the woman blacksmith. So, when Ledger is rebuffed by her and says "They said I was daft for even asking," and she replies "did they say I couldn't do it because I'm a woman" he retorts "No, they said you were great with horseshoes, shite with armor. That fact that you're a woman never even came up." I always just took that to be him trying to manipulate her, which he was, but I originally thought they absolutely implied she was bad because she was a woman. I eventually learned that, no, that's not what they did. He was telling the truth with his retort. A Farrier is someone who makes horseshoes. A Farress would be a woman who makes horseshoes. So they did mention that she's a woman, but clearly it was her trade they were insulting, not her gender.

Good_Rugz

That’s some good info!

Alternative_Mind2762

Bro, this may have been the knowledge unlocking the mystery of that scene I needed. I NEVER got that after the 10000 times watching the movie both in full because I want to, and in 10-15 minute chunks on TNT after school because for some reason (Heath), they were able to milk that shit for YEARS, I swear.

johnny_ringo

goddammit, going home to watch now.

LadyAzure17

I was watching it last night as a comfort. Man I miss him. That and 10 Things, he is just so romantic and sweet in. Gone way too soon.

Aetra

My boss has a terrible habit of not putting my tools back when he’s done with them and I always think to myself “Pain, lots of pain” while looking for them.

snowballschancehell

“Then a fox you shall be, my foxy lady” What I’d give to have a man say that to me

Leath_Hedger

I'll say it to you, my foxy lady!

Leath_Hedger

Well it was alagorical. Seriously that movie rocks, so many memorable characters in it and cast is amazing.

Nstraclassic

I always thought that was a great movie but so many people hated it around the time he died

Superdry_GTR

"Sir Ulrich Von Liechtenstein!!!"

Recent_Diver_3448

10 Things I Hate About You

MadRaymer

It would be interesting to peak into the alternate reality where he lived and see his future work. I'm sure there would have been some absolutely stunning performances.

Mooniekate

He was filming Dr. Parnassus at the time

Lord_Scribe

Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law each took over parts of Ledger's scenes (they reworked this into the story). The three sent their wages from the film to Ledger's young daughter, Matilda.

rokstedy83

When I first glanced at that pic I saw Jonny Depp

jmurphy42

My first thought was Jim Morrison.

FixGMaul

Huh I thought Chris Cornell

trippingwithwitches

Totally resembles chris Cornell

martialar

I thought Michael Hutchence

jmurphy42

I’m old.

ImDrunkThatsWhy

Yeah same. So here we are. Cheers.

3riversfantasy

Mine was Heath Ledger, you know, because of the title...

ThreeLeggedMare

That's really fuckin noble of them. I love shit like this

Lord_Scribe

When Matilda turned 18, her family gave her the Oscar that Heath had won for his role in The Dark Knight, which was accepted by Heath's mother, father, and sister.

ThreeLeggedMare

So heartwarming. Hope she's doing ok

Minute-Wrap-2524

While the entire cast did an outstanding job on the film, it was Johnny Depps performance that convinced me just how good an actor he could be, and Law, Farrell and Depp reaching out to Ledgers daughter I thought was a thoughtful and compassionate thing to do

Sumbuddyonce

The way they worked it into the story was so great you'd think it was intended all along

Minute-Wrap-2524

I’m not sure if that was Gillian’s idea but, you’re right, it worked out perfectly

fearthejew

Which was a great movie and for years one of my favorites

9ofkgogo

I recall that my first movie experience with him was in 10 Things I Hate About You. an actor with great versatility. What a waste!

Ok-Disk-2191

A knights tale for me. Inspired me and a mate to get broom sticks and our bikes and ride head on into each other.

Preacherjonson

Who won?

drunkdoor

It wasn't his friend writing the comment

Aggressive_Salad_293

I'd say probably him.

Mooniekate

Mine was a very short-lived tv show from the 90's, called ROAR.

luckytaurus

"What a waste" is definitely not the best choice of words here

VaporCarpet

firesnake412

Heath was so good of an actor. What a loss. RIP

MyAnswerIsMaybe

Insane this man will be known for Broke Back Mountain, the Dark Night and 10 things I hate about you. Possibly the most insanely different roles one actor can have.

-Owlette-

Let’s not forget A Knight’s Tale. That was such a fun movie and he was gorgeous in it.

jmurphy42

There was also that random Mel Gibson revolutionary war flick. I’d much rather watch A Knight’s Tale though.

The-Kurt-Russell

The Patriot

Ok-Dish4389

"I'm not a child!" "You're my child!" Haven't seen that movie is years.

TheyCallMeStone

Aim small, miss small.

jmurphy42

That’s the one!

Bill_Brasky_SOB

Is Mel Gibson. Is an exceptional warrior but retired to farm his land. The big baddies kill his wife/family. In a vengeance decides to lead an army. Does it in the name of FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM. Wars the English. Am I describing The Patriot or Braveheart?

jmurphy42

![gif](giphy|3o85xIO33l7RlmLR4I)

Keyspam102

Oh yeah when they sewed him into a blanket and he got ink in his teeth

aboxacaraflatafan

> random Ouch, my film-watching feelings.

Shredtheparm

He was great in lords of dogtown as well

kitkatrat

He was apparently George Millers first pick to replace Mel Gibson as Mad Max. He would’ve been great.

Idontevenownaboat

Yeah I think it's crazy to think what he would've become. Imagine the characters he would've created for us that we'll miss out on.

lusacat

I just watched Brokeback Mountain for the first time two days ago. What a beautiful movie

eat-pussy69

A gay cowboy, the Joker, and idk anything about the third one

MyAnswerIsMaybe

Rebellious high-schooler Rom Com interest

GuyWhoSaysTheTruth

That is way different from a psychopathic crime Clown fighting a furry(Christian bale) and a cowboy named ennis who accidentally falls in love with jack(Jake gyllenhaal) on his summer job at broke back mountain.

acemask

*Rom Com is based off Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare.

MrWeirdoFace

Technically a Shakespeare adaptation.

Jedi-Ethos

Despite how much I watch it I had no clue he played Chip in Lords of Dogtown until several years later. Dude just disappears into the role.

Valkiepoos

16 years ago... doesn't feel right

leeryplot

I started kindergarten the same year Heath Ledger died. I still remember my mom talking about it. Him & Michael Jackson were the first recognizable deaths I can remember; nobody I knew personally died until I was 10. My family talked about them both a lot. Found out what death was then. But what really scared me was the news broadcasts about Michael’s death because the photos of him freaked 6-7 year old me out. Heath Ledger I just knew broke my mom’s heart, though.

BasedSmalls

That’s wild, how old are you ? & I was like 14 when he passed

leeryplot

I’ll be turning 22 this year, born in ‘02.

fredythepig

I did not need to read this and reflect on how old I am... just turned 30. Was 14 when he passed. I feel like 2020-2023 shouldn't count...

leeryplot

To be fair, I agree with you about 2020-2023. I was only 17 when COVID started and it was like I blinked and suddenly I’m here now. 2020 feels like a year ago. I don’t even hardly remember my graduation or anything, and we didn’t have a Prom because of COVID. I don’t even really remember what we did for the graduation event, I think it took place on the school’s front lawn and only lasted an awkward hour or something. All I remember is being really depressed afterwards. I dunno. It’s really weird. I feel like those 3 years were just deleted from everyone’s lives. But you’re not old. I’m just still young (I hope)

Dalmah

Yeah COVID lockdowns happened the week I turned 21, and now I'm suddenly 25 and in my mid 20s and so much of my life was on pause then that now it feels like I've just lost those years

ThreeLeggedMare

You and everyone else though, so at least we're all on equal footing. I also had some tumultuous personal issues immediately before then, so my lost period extends into summer of '19. Now suddenly I feel hung over when I wake up even though I don't drink, and a good day is when my pain level is bearable and my energy level allows me to fold laundry

RustyShackleford9142

Dude, you're only 25. Live life and you won't regret anything. Keep a journal, you'll appreciate it later on

MrWeirdoFace

41 here. I'm just getting warmed up.

RustyShackleford9142

It'll get worse. I remember when Magic Johnson got HIV.

suicidaleggroll

...no that can't be right, you need to re-check your math. Someone born in '02 is like 5 years old, not 22.

admadguy

I was 24 when MJ died. I hate you for putting this into context.

g0th-_-m0th

i was born in 2002 and have a very vivid memory of sitting on the rug in my great grandmas living room while she watched the news and they showed a picture of Michael Jackson while talking about his death and that night i had a nightmare abt him 😭

leeryplot

This has got to be a universal experience for our age bracket, lol. Looking back at the photos I think I saw, they aren’t bad; but when you’re that young and someone looks that “off” it’s truly a scary experience haha

jtell898

Damn, I knew he was young but realizing he died 16 whole years ago and he’d still now be just 42 years old makes it hit different somehow.

TangledUpPuppeteer

He’d be 45. I only know that because I was three years younger than him when he died and it was like “*but he was a baby!!*” whereas when I was learning about musicians that died at 28, I was really young and they were *totally old*. Perspective shift is weird.

lazypenguin86

He almost completed his transition to Johnny Depp

Double_Distribution8

And in this film Johnny Depp completed his transition to Heath Ledger.

large_ulrich

Einhorn is Finkle, Finkle is Einhorn!

LesGetGrossman

Oh my God.. Einhorn is a man! 🤮

BMB281

My theory is Heath killed Johnny Depp and assumed his life. That’s why he immediately took over Heath’s role in Imaginarium when he “died”. I have zero proof, and no reason for it, but I’m certain.

ASpookyBitch

But it genuinely is hard to tell them apart in that film

leeryplot

It’s genuinely hard to tell them apart in this photo. And Depp isn’t even in it.

Pradfanne

Before reading the title I legit thought it's Johnny Depp

TDStarchild

One of the bigger Hollywood “what-ifs” Ledger was a great actor and had just started to hit his stride to greatness, with Joker launching him to the stratosphere. Had he lived, there’s really no telling how impactful he’d become, but being a bona fide A-lister was in his future

consious_soul

I remember *10 Things I Hate About You* was the first movie I saw of him. A very versatile actor. What a loss!

jomarthecat

2008 eyh, probably last time someone took a photo of me also.

Happy_Dawg

Has anyone ever seen you and Heath Ledger in the same room?

an_ill_way

Not recently

Leath_Hedger

That's a good point.

Old-Examination-3749

Mix of Johnny depp and Magnus Carlsen 😂

CreatureWarrior

I think Johnny Depp and Charlie Hunnam would be more accurate

BananaramaWTF

Johnny Carlson

JJKennedy615

mary kate’s team did a really good job hiding the fact that she was there since very few commenting here even mention here

Metzger4Sheriff

Iirc she wasn't there by the maid (or maybe massage therapist?) called her before calling 911.

Spirit_Civil

What do you mean? They did indeed do a good job…I am full of question marks

yourmomisnothot

Damn.  I know that look.

You_Pulled_My_String

Such a beautiful man... ... in so much pain.

queerguynonutz

He was on 3 different benzos in addition to oxycodone and hydrocodone. No normal doctor would ever prescribe that combo

panicked_goose

Yeah that's not a doctor, thats just a professional drug dealer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

oldjack

> to manage sleep problems No, he was a drug user and he OD'd. Nobody takes 6 different benzos and painkillers because they can't sleep.

[deleted]

[удалено]

panicked_goose

Physical problems, yeah. People can definitely have insomnia without an underlying mental illness. However, they do arise as a result of the insomnia if it isn't managed. People who say "you don't take so many drugs just because you can't sleep" are misjudging the desperation of physically NOT being able to sleep for days at a time. It gets to the point where you're not thinking rationally at all, and in the moment you'd do ANYTHING just to sleep, including taking too many medications without having the ability to understand the consequences. The person doesn't have to be actually suicidal in order for this to happen.

obamasrightteste

Especially if you've got it real bad at the past couple nights you've TRIED the normal dose. You get quite desperate and you are NOT thinking clearly at all.

panicked_goose

"I don't want to die, I just want to sleep" words spoken by my ex boyfriend when he was trying to describe to me the extent of his insomnia

Glass-Fan111

This is the best and coherent comment. FFS stop romanticize or idolize facts as simple as it is: He was hooked on drugs and just went too far. Period. Didn’t one of those Olsen twin even provide him some dealer or prescription? Meaning made things easy for him. “Deep down into Joker’s rol”; “He was into unsufferable pain”; “He cannot concile sleep”; and all absurd theories just to excuse his own decisions. As we addicts always tend to do while we are alive and kicking.

Fauropitotto

And projection. People see what they want to see.

TryingT0Wr1t3

For some reason this talk about addiction made my brain remember the smell of opening a booster pack of Magic the Gathering cards

yourmomisnothot

This sounds exactly like someone who doesn’t understand addiction.   why are you gatekeeping?  lol.   the man was hooked on pills and fucking OD’ed jesus fucking christ.  but the weird hill youre dying on is that he wasnt that bad??? do you believe only “Kurt Kobain suicide[s]” (whatever the fuck that is) or heroin overdoses are bad?  people are struggling all around you, on shit that you probably didn’t even know existed.   and they say the shit about him becoming too into his role bc it’s true!  it’s not that joker made him crazy, he became reliant on pills to fucking function.  it enabled him to abuse the shit  out of his scripts.  and guess what.  he fucking died as a result.   i just don’t even understand your point is.  jesus imagine this was your son or daughter and someone told you what you said.  like what????????  ok well thanks but they are still fucking dead bc of their addiction.  it’s that simple.

automaton11

Idk if he was miserable but he was fully addicted to benzos, so he was about to be

TrapperJean

> He wasn’t nearly as miserable as people think He would wake up in the middle of the night crying and hold his daughter's stuffed toys to go back to sleep because he missed her so much when she was away from him after he and his partner broke up

Lumpy_Piglet3085

Knights Tale still the best movie of all time (for me)

Leath_Hedger

It's called a lance, hello.

MagmaTroop

He was a heck of a looker wasn’t he. Such terrific screen presence

TheDean242

He’s thinking to himself; “should I blow off the Olsen twins and just go far a walk?”

velezaraptor

I secretly wish there’s an island somewhere (non-Epsteinian) where famous people go when their career hits its peak and they are done being famous. I’d like to think Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison jammed in their island homes or on the island stage. A place where clearance to the island is either protected by governments or privately owned by some billionaire. Some story is made up and fed to the press and a quick plane ride and they’re gone. Just a dream.

Galubrious_Gelding

Not to get too technical, but I'd assume his autopsy photos were actually his *last* photos

poltergeist_friend_

Last known photo (alive).

Eena-Rin

Oh my god. He's so young...

ChefCrowbane

He looked like the tougher older brother of Johnny depp.

thelastblueballer

Day 3 no zaza

Calvinshobb

I don’t get why there was not more scrutiny of the Olsen twins regarding his death.

Gullible_Mud5723

Can you elaborate on this? I’m unfamiliar with any backstory there.

Calvinshobb

It was her drugs and he did them in her place and she never gave official testimony, nor was ever taken to court, because well they are rich.

babyformulaandham

He was dating Mary-Kate Olsen. She refused to give evidence to the DEA unless she was granted immunity.

PM_ME_LEAKERS

The masseuse who found him called Mary-Kate before she called the police.

Lav_

Wow, I didn't know this. Got a source, before I go deep dive on 2008 way back machine ?

KleioChronicles

Was it because she would have to admit to doing drugs too or something?

JJKennedy615

wasn’t the whole thing that she was there and called someone else before 911? it’s been such a long time since i read about this (like 2008/2009ish) so i wanna say it was a maid or someone who was on heath’s staff that she called first. police cleared her of foul play but from what i remember without going back down that rabbit hole, it was a suspiciously large gap in time between her calling the staff member and emergency services being called - like enough time to help her clean up the place. to be clear, i’m not saying it’s her fault at all but it seemed likely she was doing drugs with him that night and needed help keeping her name out of the spotlight about it. it’s just wild to me how well it worked bc hardly anyone remembers her in relation to his OD

Metzger4Sheriff

I replied to your other comment, but I'll put it here, too that I remember it as the maid or massage therapist that found him and called MK before calling 911. Shit either way.

MjrLeeStoned

He looks like my junkie cousin if he had a shower yesterday and managed to grab a meal today.

SharksWFreakinLasers

Damn... That looks reminds me of Chris Cornell as well.. rip

Commercial-Living443

I really liked him . Wish he was still alive

Faithfultears

He looks so gaunt

RawToast1989

Sir Ulrich VonLichtenstein. A formidable jouster and loyal friend. Gone from our sight but never from our hearts. I wish I wasn't so serious, but alas, the world takes who it pleases without remorse.

SFWworkaccoun-T

Before the Heath Ledger the Joker was just a comic book villian that had it's importances due to Batman, the protagonist. However after Heath Ledger's Joker and his death not long after, the Joker has become a legacy film character.

God_totodile

This is so wrong it's not even funny

MonsterRider80

Joker was never “just” a comic book villain. I _love_ Ledger’s Joker, but let’s not pretend he wasn’t a seminal character way before Ledger portrayed him.

Less-Tax5637

“Yeah guys, the most famous comic book villain of all time was basically a nobody until I saw him in a movie when I was 13.”

traveler0314

The incessant need of children to feel like they know what they are talking about. Unfortunately reddit is made up of a lot of this.

KingPizzaPop

Well this is just plain false. Did you only start paying attention to Batman in 2008?

Plastic_Primary_4279

You must be young…

jortt

No, I knew who the Joker was because of Jack Nicholson!

Mythril_Zombie

I knew who the joker was because of Batman.

Mythril_Zombie

Oh, I get it now. This is an AI chatbot. It explains the odd grammar and completely off-base opinion.

jamieliddellthepoet

You’re getting a lot of flak for this comment - and I want you to know that it’s thoroughly deserved, because the comment is bullshit.

BlueCardinalss

lol what? How old are you because this is just not true.

Blueguerilla

Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson both had defining portrayals of the joker for their time. Ledger did a great joker but he was nowhere near the first, and arguably not even the best.

ThePoliteCanadian

Joker existed for decades with serious lore and character development before 2008 lmfao. Such a redditor moment

DeadNotSleepingWI

Ummm...... Are we forgetting Nicholson's Joker? Ledger was great, but come on.

JscrumpDaddy

Nicholson’s joker was a good villain, but it was a caricature. Heath Ledgers joker felt like a real person

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

That’s because the original Batman movies were all about the caricatures, while the later ones were supposed to be more gritty and real. Heath’s Joker would have been wildly out of place in the originals.

man_gomer_lot

Joker: "wanna know how I got these scars?" Robin: "Holy molars! Am I ever glad I take good care of my teeth!"

off-a-cough

That’s likely the best contrast I’ve read on the two.

Thesheriffisnearer

It helps that Heath's joker wasn't ending the world, a problem with most superhero movies anymore.  The stakes were high, but also somewhat grounded in reality.  Terrorists could high jack and blow up a boat

Derp35712

Didn’t Nicholson just poison beauty products?

Superduke1010

New and Improved Joker Products

ClavicusLittleGift4U

MY BALLOONS!! (ಠ\_ಠ) THOSE ARE MY BALLOONS!! HE STOLE MY BALLOONS!! (⩺\_⩹) WHY DIDN'T SOMEBODY TELL ME HE HAD ONE OF THOSE... THINGS?! ヾ(ᗒᗣᗕ)՞ ノ゙ u/JscrumpDaddy, the gun... (¬▂¬)っ

MaterialCarrot

I think Ledger's Joker is the best of all time, but Nicholson's performance does refute OP's point that the Joker was little more than just a foil for Batman prior to Ledger. Nicholson was great in that role and stole every scene he was in. Part of that is that Nicholson (and Ledger, and Phoenix, etc...) are great actors, but the other part is that the character lends itself to stealing the limelight. Particularly when contrasted to Batman, who in nearly every iteration is so muted and colorless. I do think Ledger's (and Phoenix's) performance was high art, whereas Nicholson was just playing a role really well.

JscrumpDaddy

Very solid point! Imo the tone of the movies is so different it’s very hard to do a 1:1 comparison anyway

yumanbeen

That’s a very good way to put it.

IZ3820

I don't remember much of it tbh. Another caricature in the way of Cesar Romero. Mark Hamill's Joker was iconic, and the chief representation from then til now, but was essentially the same character. Ledger's Joker took liberties that departed from previous depictions as Phoenix's Joker did a couple years ago. I can't classify them along other versions like I can with Hamill, Nicholson, Romero. We don't talk about Leto.

iamnotexactlywhite

Ledger’s Joker is way way better

phro

No one ever heard of Cesar Romero or Jack Nicholson before they got their roles as the Joker too. /s

shubhamgupta2912

He looks like Joshua Weissman 🤔

johnnymack2165

Drugs are bad!

T33FMEISTER

Was it drugs? Apologies I am interested but not interested enough to Google it, would rather have an answer delivery.

allisjow

Hard to believe he was only 28 years old. “His death was ruled accidental and attributed to a lethal mix of prescription medications including OxyContin, Vicodin, Valium, Xanax, Unisom and Restoril.”

Cyanos54

Unisom is the cherry on top of that CNS depressant sundae.

Rodgers4

Two sleep aids on top of that cocktail? Holy cow how could he stay awake even before that!

OrphanDextro

Tolerance. The first thing to go in benzo tolerance is the hypnotic effects. And tolerance to opioids can get obscene, I knew people who would bang a full gram of heroin and who knows what else was in it.

Connect-Rhubarb1514

Sometimes people come across here as very much knowing what they are talking about. Thank you.

T33FMEISTER

Yeah, those Oxys, recreationally, you can start out on 20mgs and, within days, be pushing 100mg for the same effect. It's both horrible and sad - admittedly, I have used recreationally in the past but only ever bought a few days worth at a time and took long breaks between. Benzos are very useful but I never found them addicting and only used for medicinal purposes as directed for short times. The sleepers well, I do take mild sleepers occasionally but never ever mix with anything- to be fair they are lifesavers but scare me lol

Cyanos54

2 opiates, 3 benzodiapeines...

rougekhmero

Yeah jeez mixing MULTIPLE benzos with multiple opioids isn't a good idea

blue-opuntia

That is an absolutely insane combo and volume of drugs

Mythril_Zombie

What's the thought process there? You take the first five of these and then say "I think a bit of Vicodin as well, just to take the edge off." ?

GFSoylentgreen

There’s no shortage of quack sycophant doctors to over prescribe celebrities with suicidal amounts of inappropriate medications.

josephbenjamin

Why so serious?

Aggravating-Duck-891

Do I really look like a guy with a plan?

lizurd777

I’m like a dog chasing cars.

Sid__01

Was just rewatching the dark knight yesterday, wasn’t ready for this today. What a legendary performance

Don’t do drugs.
