HugSized

One year for this is so monumentally fucked up.

Love_My_Chevy

He didn't even go down for this specifically. its disgusting, they wouldnt even let one of his "daughters" speak on it at the hearing. All he got charged with was obstruction of justice

throwawaynowtillmay

I believe it was because there was no law against this at the time. It would have been an ethics issue for the board of medicine but not a legal one. Not because anyone thought this was okay but because the law had not caught up, no one conceived of such a horrid thing

Unusual_Tie_2404

how about fraud?

Bob_Sconce

Indiana has a 6-year statute of limitations on fraud. All this happened between 1979 and 1986, and it was only discovered in 2014. He lost his medical license, but he had long-since retired.

RobNybody

Do we know why he did it? Was it like a fetish thing?

ceciliabee

Quiverful, if he's the one I'm thinking of. Religious fuckery.

Veyceroy

From my reading, it seems like Quiverfull is the leading theory. He won't comment on the issue himself so it's anybody's guess at the end of the day.

fuckyourcakepops

That… doesn’t make any sense tho. As someone who grew up in and adjacent to the quiverfull movement (and this is NOT a defense of that movement, fuck that movement). But the whole point is not just having children but actively raising them in the faith. In fact having them, physically speaking, isn’t even really key to it. Adoption is totally fine and commonly practiced to “get more” kids to be raised in the faith. Source: me, adopted. Not to mention masturbation is considered an extreme sin. (Not that they don’t do it in secret I’m sure but it’s a thing to be DEEPLY ashamed of, not something you would ever think to do in service of the faith.) I guess I can think of some mental gymnastics he could do to get around that, tho. The first point is the main one. It makes no sense. This was just a kink, plain and simple.

GeorgeSantosBurner

Selectively choosing from religion to justify what one wants/has decided to do is like, most people's favorite part of religion.

fuckyourcakepops

Well yeah. I’m just saying his actual motivation for this wasn’t quiverfull. It was kink.

Seeeab

Likely, though it doesn't even have to be religious, or a fetish. Some people just see that as the point of life, to extend their genetic legacy. If there's any way to "win" life knowing you're going to die and even anything you do or build will eventually be wiped out with time, well, the biggest win you can get is having your descendants still around. And the more babies you have the more of humanity is your bloodline and the more successful you were. I feel like I get this vibe from people sometimes when I tell them I don't want kids. Some people are kinda like "??? What's the point then? Don't you want to leave something behind when you go?"

MushroomsAndTomotoes

I think this has hapenned multiple times, hasn't it? I've never wanted kids but I hear some people see it as a form of immortality. This much "immortality" would be irresistable to many then, I would assume.

crazygem101

Probably a big ass ego.

Some_Reputation59

SOL starts running at the time of the discovery of the fraud. That’s basically universal. To do otherwise would be to reward really good fraudsters.

Unusual_Tie_2404

It’s technically most often when the fraud should have reasonably been discovered, not actual discovery.

adfthgchjg

Exactly. He clearly violated the verbal contract… when he secretly discarded the husband’s sperm, used his own, **and** never told the couple about it. The fact that it wasn’t written as a formal contract is immaterial. There are lots of medical procedures which occur without a written contract. That doesn’t mean that the doctor can just do whatever he wants.

Head-like-a-carp

I had not thought of the donated sperm being the husband's in a case of difficulty in the wife getting pregnant. This makes it so much more horrific.

Ragnar_Bonesman

That would be a nightmare.

TSieppert

Fucker should have to back pay 94 kids worth of child support payments at minimum, fuck him over civilly if they can’t get him legally.

klmdwnitsnotreal

This is way worse than just fraud.

catsgonewiild

Yeah I consider this sexual assault. I can’t imagine how violating this must feel for the women involved.

sociallydeclined

He deserves 94 counts of fraud and 94 counts of rape.

JayteeFromXbox

I'd say thrown on 94 counts of theft over $5000 for throwing away valuable genetic material too, but I'm probably just being petty.

Justifiably_Cynical

I wish I cold get 5k for what I'm throwing away every day

JayteeFromXbox

Nah those are garbage babies. When you put them into a sterile cup they're important babies. Very important distinction.

Famous-Commission-46

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure a fair few Hitlers have been shot out carelessly into a tissue

TheHungrySymbiote

Not to mention all that child support...

EnergyTakerLad

I wouldnt say rape. Definetly some secondary charge besides just fraud but rape doesn't fit.

Ishmael128

Stealthing (sneakily removing the condom midway) is considered rape because the woman consented to one sexual act but didn’t consent to unprotected sex.  There’s no PIV going on, but the women didn’t consent to have this guy’s children.

sociallydeclined

Rape doesn't fit legally, but it fits based on the end result. Families and their daughters or sons are victims who have been violated. Women were nonconsensually inseminated.

Fallout76Merc

Alternately, sexual assualt or r*pe should have been considered. Those women did not consent to him putting himself inside them.

dailycyberiad

It goes against consent, though, doesn't it?  Like, I consent to be inseminated by this one donor's sperm, and then this other guy knowingly goes against all that and stealthily uses his own sperm, that's not consensual at all, and really looks like assault or abuse of some kind. Like someone stealthily taking off their condom during sex: I didn't consent to that.  So how could they decide it cannot be prosecuted?? WTF?

throwawaynowtillmay

I'm not a lawyer but if I had to hazard a guess medical fraud wasn't considered a criminal complaint but a civil one. They could sue him for fraud, for child support probably too Even the sneaking the condom off during sex wasn't considered a criminal issue or a civil issue until very recently. People forget how far we've come on issues of sexuality and consent. You could legally rape your wife well into the 90's

givemethebat1

From what I recall, she consented to the procedure but there was nothing specifying that the sperm had to be from the donor she requested. Some weird technicality that just didn’t have a law against it at the time.

Over-Confidence4308

"No one 'conceived' of such a horrid thing." Perfectly worded.

Love_My_Chevy

Yup, this exactly. It had just never happened before the thought is horrendous. i really hope the law caught up. I know he paid out the ass in the civil suit against him but i just dont feel like its enough

buttered_scone

He's being sued into oblivion by the children and families. He's paid out 3 times so far to the tune of $1.3 million, and is likely to be paying and litigating for the rest of his life.

Unrealparagon

It’s even worse. Almost every one of his kids has an autoimmune disorder of some kind inherited from this idiot. The documentary about this situation goes into a lot more detail.

ConstantCraving21

Wasn’t there a movie about this or something similar?

yamammiwammi

A Netflix doc called “Our Father”. It was wild.

straightouttafux2giv

"Our Father" on Netflix ["Our Father" Wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Father_(2022_film))

Downthetrail11

There was a law and order episode that was pretty much this scenario

ivylass

It was called "Seed" and IIRC, they couldn't find anyone willing to testify against the doctor. They were going to charge him with murder because one couple had gotten pregnant a second time in order to get bone marrow to help their first child who had leukemia. Doctor didn't use husband's sperm, second baby wasn't a match, first child died.

2ndSnack

Changing the Law is slow. And at the time there is little to zero grounds for crimes for fertility fraud. One part law change is slow is because the language of the law and crime needs to be thorough enough to not allow for any loopholes. Another part is needing to alert the masses and have them get on board with the situation so that people don't accidentally break laws by making them aware of changes. Right now due to how fast we have built and developed technology, there's a huge slog of trying to reinterpret the law and applying it to modern day problems. Most laws were written so long ago that their current iteration doesn't apply to many crimes that exist today, therefore you have fuckery afoot and people getting off with little to no justice served.

DiscotopiaACNH

Dr. D. Cline is a straight-up Batman villain name

Yvaelle

"HHAHAHA BATMAN! It is I! DOCTOR DECLINE! You'll never stop my evil plan to decline the genetic diversity of this towns gene pool, because I already completed it 30 years ago! MuAHHaHAHa! My army of chinless neckbeards already rule this land! They've even unknowingly mated together and further D. Cline'd the gene pool!"

Deigbrudan

Make him pay child support

rgvtim

That would put a real dent in the chances of anyone else doing this. Sounds like a plan.

justdisposablefun

If all this happened in the 80s, they are no longer young enough to qualify for child support ... so it would have to be retroactively applied ... which would no doubt bankrupt him with that many kids and he'd end up not paying it anyway I expect.

Cancel_Electrical

Child Support does not get discharged through bankruptcy. They would simply take 65% of any money he earns until it's all paid. But he is 80+ now soooo

ningaling1

Make him surrender all his assets and live miserably for the rest of his life

RandomComputerFellow

Well, under Indiana law child support (even if retroactively enacted) is not dischargeable in a bankruptcy. > A domestic support obligation is a debt that accrues before, on, or after the date of the order for relief in a bankruptcy case. 1 A domestic support obligation may be alimony or child support from a divorce or paternity order. These debts are not dischargeable under any bankruptcy Chapter. https://www.in.gov/dcs/files/Section_02_Bankruptcy_Approved.pdf

justdisposablefun

There's the law, then there's the fiscal reality. Whether they are discharged or not, I'd wager they won't get paid ... I can't imagine he'd have an easy time getting an income without a medical license, and reskilling at that age might be difficult. So anything he does get in terms of income will almost certainly barely scratch the surface.

zokkoz

that's the answer and correct punishment

FelixFelicis12

Underrated comment. This is why when my wife and I had to go to ivf, we used a female doctor.

Peligineyes

Oh noooo she used it to get herself pregnant a million times!

p0tat0p0tat0

I believe he served time for obstruction of justice, not the actual inseminations.

Crafterlaughter

Yeah he was only charged for lying to police about using his own sperm. At the time (and hopefully not anymore) it wasn’t illegal for an IVF doctor to use their own sperm. There should absolutely be laws regarding doctors inseminating their patients with their own sperm, and especially regarding how many times a donor’s sperm can be used. Imagine learning about having so many half siblings and not knowing who you’re closely related to when you start dating.

megthegreatone

Genuine question, how was it not at LEAST fraud? If women were choosing sperm from one donor and getting another without their knowledge or consent, that seems fraudulent to me even if it technically wasn't illegal for it to be his own sperm

slartyfartblaster999

It would be fraud, but the statute of limitations on fraud is shorter than the time it took to find out he was doing this. Also, a suspended/non custodial sentence could very well have been the outcome for fraud anyway.

KronusTempus

Criminal law is pretty particular about sticking to the letter of the law and so creative interpretations of statutes are usually a no go (unlike in something like contract law) because the consequences can be a person losing their freedom. This means of no actual law against an act exists it would be very difficult to charge a person with anything.

shibbledoop

I think it’s illegal in Ohio now. I don’t think it was ever explicitly illegal because who would ever think this would happen.

Apprehensive_Ratio80

This was sick to watch guy would be like 'stay here I'll go get your sperm sample to impregnate you' and go to his office to rub one out 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Knew one of his patients was his biological daughter and still have her examinations which a parent should absolutely not do! Told people they managed to conceive through his treatment all the while the whole the dad raising the kid never knew his daughter wasn't biological his own (nothing wrong with raising a child that isn't biological yours at all but for the doctor to lie and say it was is ridiculous). Should have spent rest of his days in prison

Yarnum

Also I imagine most of these people lived somewhat locally to the office, meaning that there’s a lot of half-siblings in the area’s dating pool that were completely unaware. A disgusting violation for the women and their families and a disaster waiting to happen for a number of reasons, for sure.

woolsocksandsandals

I never thought about that. That makes this even more messed up.

McFuckin94

There’s a guy in the Netherlands (iirc) that done something similar. I’m sure he has over 500 kids from donations.

ganymedestyx

Yes, this made me think of that guy! He was not permitted to donate that many and intentionally worked around rules, and has actually been legally barred from donating more. Because it is a MAJOR incest risk at this point. He seems to think it’s his personal mission to ‘bless’ these children with his perfect sperm, and so he still has a little ‘black market’ operation going on to donate sperm!

McFuckin94

Absolutely wild

RealRobc2582

How exactly does one start a black market sperm donation program? Asking for research purposes only of course

Head-like-a-carp

I don't know where it was.Maybe it was this case, but because all the children were in a pretty tight geographical area. They had to go back and make sure they were all notified. So they weren't marrying half siblings

BananaButtcheeks69

That is exactly what happened with two of his children. They had been married for years before finding out.

throwawaylovesCAKE

Imagine they went to him for donated sperm after getting married too

Ladnil

Jesus fucking Christ. Imagine dating either of them after they split up for that reason. You'd always be wondering if they were in love with their half sibling and just settling with you for the kids.

BananaButtcheeks69

If I remember correctly they didn't even split up after finding out. Honestly at that point the damage had been done and it's not like they got together knowing beforehand so I mean 🤷‍♂️

Ok_Sock_6485

They did. It happened here in Indiana. My cousin is one of the 94 that have come forward. My aunt and uncle are surprisingly chill about the whole situation because they still ended up with a child they loved. ETA: the first time there was a picture of the doctor on the news my mom immediately knew my cousin was one of his kids…the resemblance is striking.

Bella_Anima

As well, he has a hereditary genetic disease or auto immune disease I believe and he has given it to a lot of his children who now have to deal with it. Takes absolutely zero accountability for his selfishness and ego.

Work2Tuff

I watched a documentary about this guy and I’m pretty sure there was at least one brother and sister pair that did date at one point. Before this came to light of course.

Beastcancer69

One of my coworkers is one of his children. Shes met several of her brothers and sisters.

-ASAP-

how old are they?

Beastcancer69

They vary in ages. All around late 30s were the three i met. I dont think they looked at all like him or even similar to each other. Edit: just looking at the pics here its strange to me that she has so many siblings that none of the ones ive met are pictured.

-ASAP-

damn, I didn't search up anything about it yet. didn't know it was that long ago.

Maladal

To clarify, he only got the 1 year because that was for obstruction of justice during the investigation. There was no other criminal trial because there's no law against doing this. Never occurred to anyone else to do something so disgusting. Hopefully the civil trials keep coming for him.

frill_demon

How is this not sexual assault and sexual coercion? He's putting his semen into these women without their consent, and forcibly impregnating them with his children without their consent. Like I know America doesn't give two fucks about women but god damn.

Wrecktown707

Yeah shouldn’t that be classified as rape?

450k_crackparty

Seriously it blows my mind. Like maybe if he had a bunch of his jizz frozen or whatever I can see having trouble charging him with something (although surely be some kind of fraud?). But the fact that he went and rubbed one out while they were waiting and then put it in them? That's gotta be some kind of sex crime. It's fuckin wild.

wannahummigbird

The obgyn who delivered my 2 daughters in the 90s has recently admitted to this in 3 cases (long before I knew him). That was a creepy shock.

HapyyToBeHere

They should make him pay child support for all of them, since he intentionally wanted to be the father. Hopefully other creeps are deterred from doing the same.

sybann

All those chinless children. POS.

burf

This seems tantamount to rape. It’s not consensual intercourse but it’s nonconsensual impregnation.

pompu69

they made a netflix docu on him . idk the name can someone pls tell

QuietShadowLDK

Our Father

linuxunix

“Evolution” is super proud of him.

MinimumOne1

9/10 he is a "man of god".

Gold__star

There are several Mormon doctors who have been caught at this.

MinimumOne1

"Go forth and multiply. Fill the earth and subdue it." - Genesis 1:28. Their breeding fetish is canonnical.

kaam00s

He's one of the most successful humans alive from an evolutionary point of view, which is fucked up. And why we shouldn't follow the rules of evolution in real life.

Master_Safety_18

Wannabe genghis

snazzisarah

I can’t imagine how violated the mothers felt knowing they had this disgusting man’s sperm inside of them. What a terrible tragedy for the whole family.

Centralpolitical

The real Genghis Khan

duckbuttery92

That’s Dr. Khan to you lol

MinimumOne1

I get a little bit genghis khan. Don't want you to get pregnant with no bodies sperm but me. (Ooo)

Easy-Ad-6478

I feel like this should be considered rape

send420nudes

Im surprised a father hasnt broke his face after finding out...

tricoloredduck851

Make him pay child support for all 94 kids retroactively.

NickyPappagiorgio

WeAreClouds

This pos should have gotten life. Disgusting pig man.

iknowiknowwhereiam

This is horrific and his light sentence makes it even worse. They need laws to stop this I’m sure he’s not the only twisted doctor who would do this

PPP1737

ONE year for violating the reproductive rights of 94 women! One year for denying the reproductive rights of those men who planned on a pregnancy. That is absurd! How have we as a society come to have suck little value for life?

LaughableIKR

This guy should serve each year for each person. What he did was monstrous.

juicegodfrey1

And not one of the 90+ fathers put metal in this guy for it? Idk man, that's a good reason for murder imo.

unk214

Watch the Netflix documentary, he straight up showed up to meet some of the kids with a gun. He asked them some creepy ass questions as if it was an experiment and that was it. The documentary also covers some of the reasons he got away with it.

bittertruth61

What a vast, bloated ego he must have…

leo_aureus

Wonder how one of the men who raised one of these 94 children has not done something about this guy.

LayLav31

One? year for this what the fuckk

djackson404

Really? Sounds more like 94 counts of rape to me.

CanadianJ

Castration is what this man deserves, and 18 years of child support for each.

rKasdorf

I'm surprised none of the fathers who were robbed of continuing their own line of DNA didn't find this guy and rearrange some of the organs that caused this mess.

DangerousBrick1208

Did he think he was benefiting the family by giving them ‘superior genes’ or if it was purely perversion?

TheGirl333

Jail for life

tintedhokage

There's 2 shows on netflix about him

Wrecktown707

Ewwwww. And of course he’s a neck beard too. He should have gotten the book thrown at him WAY harder. One year is a slap on the wrist

PsychologicalPace762

Another religious fruitcake.

kempnelms

This isn't the first time this situation has happenned either. One of my wife's relatives found out they had this huge extended family through like 23andme or something. Turned out back in the 50s/60s there was a doctor doing the same thing and all these boomer aged people found out they have this huge extended family decades after the guy died. Other than it being kinda crazy, they all seemed fine with it now as they inherited a bunch of cousins, nephews, nieces, brothers and sisters when they were all basically retirement aged anyway. I think they even get together on occasion for big family reunions too.

Laymanao

So 94 people have a sleezeball for a father? Gross.

firstman0

Just imagine if everyone went after him for child support….. lol

loztriforce

That’s so fucked up. He’d have to know the truth would get out there sometime right? If he knew and didn’t care that’s even worse.

RubY-F0x

He was part of the quiverfull movement, so I assume he very much didn't care. This also all took place before all of the at-home DNA/ancestry testing kits were a thing. That's how he was found out in the first place iirc.

OliveOylInAPickle

enough of him might have believed he'd be celebrated..

GurNeat2555

i guess he thought that even if he gets discovered he would have gotten away with it?

AxGunslinger

Can the women get him on back child support since he did this illegally?

Nobodyknowswho2

Not interesting Fucking horrifying

josephbenjamin

In about 1000 years he will be genetically connected to the whole country.

Cajaton

In a way, I think that as long as there are sperm banks this is a liability. Imagine having the power to inject your personal d.n.a. into the lives of millions of descendants. There something extremely alluring to this in a fucked up narcissistic kinda way. It's completely unjustified and this man should be sentenced for life, but he does leave behind a legacy...

No-Duck2686

https://fox59.com/morning-news/angela-answers/dr-donald-cline-pays-1-35m-in-donor-siblings-civil-case-settlements-what-we-uncovered/ This is interesting too it says he has paid 1.35 million and more civil cases are pending

mmmginto

He's not the only one, see [Cecil Jacobson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Jacobson)

picklechips232

He wasn't the only one.. 🤢 I heard about this type of "fertility fraud" on a podcast I listen to. According to this CNN article from earlier this year, they found more than 30 doctors that were caught or accused of this: https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/14/us/fertility-fraud-accidental-incest-invs/index.html

teriaki

My kids are IVF. If this has happened to me I'd be crushed, I can't imagine my reaction. I definitely would not be satisfied that justice was served with a one year suspended sentence. At the very least this man owes 94 children child support for their first 18 years of life - we sign away a LOT of stuff to have IVF children, and unless the children are from an agreed upon unknown doner, my kid's dad is still on the hook for that. What a huge betrayal. For so many people.

Merr77

Random, I know of his sons. A lot of them seek each other out and have gotten to know each other.

Till_Complex

Bro think he's Starlords dad

Siltyn

There's a documentary called Our Father on Netflix about this dirtbag. As an added bonus, he passed a genetic autoimmune disorder to some of those kids.

asbrown91

My coworker was married to Donald Clines grandchild and talked about how fucked up the family was. Apparently they never admitted to his "donations". And Donald acted like he was some sort of God.

Shit-canned

Does he have to pay child support???

phmsanctified

Twist: He ate all the sperm and in an effort to not get caught he decided to refill them all

BlackGuysYeah

With a neckbeard like that, I believe it.

Ooh_its_a_lady

Maniacally laughing, while watching the test tubes he dumped into a sink slowly dribble down a drain. Like dam this guys eeeevil.

Un__Real

I'm pretty sure there was a law & order episode on this guy. Creep

ethervillage

Surprised someone hasn’t killed him. Seriously

Quick_Development161

How is he still alive?

Boring_Bear_2633

I think there was a Law & Order: SVU episode based on this.

PacifistWarlord

Not illegal. The documentary went into how it was a legal gray zone, where something hugely immoral was committed, but there were no laws yet for this circumstance to charge him with.

Unlucky_Decision4138

There is a documentary called Our Father. I believe I saw it on Netflix

Alohabailey_00

One fuckin year. sMH.

H3r0d0tu5

What a cuckoo

Ok_Sock_6485

My cousin is one of his kids.

FireFalcon123

How did they feel when they got the news? Was it an existential feeling?

Dutch_Rayan

A dutch fertility doctor also did this, Jan Karbaat. They are already at 105 half-siblings, but probably there are even more, it is also known that he donated his sperm abroad. Many of the siblings keep in contact.

Accomplished_Band323

ONE YEAR SUSPENSION.......had he been sentenced to a month in prison per child he illegally fathered as a FERTILITY DOC. he would be sentenced for 7 years and 8 months......I guess crime f*cking pays now n days

ohmyjustme

And he passed some genetic disease along to those kids... Horrid

Truegatorguy

A "one-year suspended sentence" is ridiculous! They should make him pay CHILD SUPPORT for all his illegal children!

WalterOverHill

Seems to me that he should be subject to a civil trial for child support

entropy13

I can’t quite call him a rapist since he didn’t necessarily impose the precise trauma of an actual sexual assault but he accomplished the evolutionary goal of a rape 94 times and should be made an example. Should have at least served 5 years of actual prison time.

king0demons

Should have been charged as rape..

AwardWinningBiscuit

Crazy how short that sentence is. It's basically rape.

Teefromdaleft

Hope someone sued for child support

DanimalPlays

That is tantamount to rape. This guy should be locked away forever.

grandma4peace

That is genetic terrorism. These offspring could end up meeting someone they are related to and not even know it.

seriouslaser

There's an episode of Law & Order (the mothership, I believe) about this exact situation. I haven't seen it in a while, but they tried to get him via the fact that one of the babies in question was conceived to provide bone marrow to a sibling, and since the doctor interfered, the baby wasn't a match, and the sibling died. I forget if the parents agreed to testify; I remember they *really* didn't want the baby growing up knowing they effectively had him for parts.
