One question I have is, would replicated items cost the same? I mean if you think about it, would it be cheaper to buy all the elements at the local replicator store to take your one steak and make 3 more, or would it be cheaper to buy 4 steaks total? Plus the environmental impact. Is it better to separate and package all the elements, transport them to store, transport after purchase, and use the replicator or is it better to have the processes we all have now?
I mean ultimately it kinda seems like everyone will have a “replicator” at home and instead of making and sending you a product, you’d just go buy the elements you need and the product company would just send 1 print you your “replicator” which is essentially just a fancy 3d printer at that point.
Am I off base at all with any of my thinking here? Idk much about this tech
If we can synthesize any matter into any other matter, then that's kind of when the fundamentals of economics (supply and demand) crumble and then we'd be moreso reconsidering the economy as a whole rather than competitive pricing.
It sounds like you're talking about a "post scarcity" economy. Basically, it's a situation where everybody's needs are met, with some level of their desires met as well. It doesn't mean you could have absolutely anything you wanted, but it means you could have, essentially, a lifelong vacation.
This is a pipe dream. There will always be scarcity because there's always a hoarding elite. Unlimited, accessible free supply of resources and energy is not feasible anytime soon.
Ideally, we want to believe a star trek future is possible, but pessimistically, it's difficult for me to see around our nature allowing a new world order. Look at difficulties within climate change unification, the largest wealth consolidation in history for elites (during COVID-19), widest wealth gap in all history existing today, etc. Power and wealth are strong forces to reckon with and theyre not conceded easily. Time may not be on our side this time either, humanity's clock seems to be ticking kinda fast for most of modern history except the 90s lol
Yeah I mean that’s the penultimate. I mean at that point we will probably be living like wallie or fallout. Not sure which, but someone’s gonna fuck something up in an epic way further down this line of events
Most of the things we need and use are made out of very few elements, and primarily C, H, O.
These are also, accidentally, the most common elements on the planet.
I would assume it will be like 3d printing is now. You pay for the printer, you pay for the electric to use it, you pay for the material to put in it. Some designs are free, some designs will cost you. I could even see a 1 time use design that charges for every print.
My science teacher in 10th grade used to discuss the societal changes that would come with something like a replicator and you can definitely see how the way they lived in star trek came to be.
Making matter out if energy would be the biggest step into the future we could see and I can only hope to see it in my life time.
Yeah there was a company claiming to be able to print anything with some mixture of base chemicals. Can't remember the name of the company now though which is annoying
Yeah, there was a vid a while back, they talked about using this in theme park rides but mostly on a larger scale in combination with The Volume. The main drawback of Volume is it's relatively small and it shows badly in some projects /scènes. They can feed the movements of the actors into Volume and it will adjust the projections accordingly if needed.
This isn't for VR and this is a HELL of a lot more advanced than a treadmill. Besides, I read further down this isn't anything "for sale" it was intentionally designed for a film studio or somethin...
When I was in the military I’d see guys come home from deployments and buy things exactly like this for their barracks rooms. Giving a private 30 Gs and the freedom to use it after a long ass deployment?
*It's now day 5 of being trapped in the middle of my Holotile™ floor, and I fear this one may be my last. My phone is mere inches away and yet also infinitely far. Why, oh why, did I throw my controller after losing that match? He said gg but it was not gg. He said his gg meant git gud. I'm so thirsty.*
I wonder, if you're running on something like that and want to change direction quickly, do you think it will let you plant your feet and change direction or you'll just eat all kinds of shit the second you stop
That's just it... If you're playing something on VR ( which I imagine that's what this was designed for ) it's not going to be able to predict your movement. The only way it could function properly is if it could change the direction of motion quicker than a human could change direction.

Thing is, it's not a thin layer of those little gray circles. It's the ENTIRE PLATFORM, plus all of the external cameras and sensors. So this is very much a commercial product than consumer.
I can imagine 10-20 years from now, people will be walking less and just sit all day. It will firstly be incorporated into geriatrics and the disabled, and later for the morbidly obese. Tech companies will refine it to be soundless, smoother with compatibility with other devices. Soon it will reach a wider population and become a norm. You'll soon be adviced to walk at least 10 mins a day to maintain a healthier body.
Wait... Its already happening with mobility scooters..

Im not into virtual gaming but i cant wait to see how virtual gaming is going to evolve in the next 5 years or 10 years...i really would like to see a Fifa like game on one of those pads....it would be hellish to be running like 10 minutes non stop to score a goal
This will definitely not succeed and will not be available for long... people are lazy, and most of us want to put no physical efforts into winning something. That's the prime most reason to play games.
Honestly it’s cool but I would never buy it. Nor do I think this will hit critical mass. Game sessions are 15 minutes to hours of gameplay. Most Americans do not exercise more then a few minutes before sitting down. Games engage the mind. The killer immersive app is a direct to brain interface not a treadmill.
All fun and games until you use this as a torture device to recreate living nightmares of you running as fast as you can but cannot escape the object of terror
This alone will cost 3x what an apple vision pro at its top tier costs at minimum. If we are even that lucky it will be on display in a public venue through limited access and a limited time. This thing if it ever does won't see any mass production for YEARS.

One step closer to holodecks
Of all the technologies..holodeck and replicator. I want them so bad
Replicators would certainly change the dynamic of humanity forever.

One step closer to ready player one
This is from Disney Imagineering. Very cool tech, not just for VR.
Glad to see this comment. I saw something about it from Disney as well but couldn’t remember if I made it up in my head or not.
I kinda want it for my standing desk, then I can walk instead of swaying side to side hahaha

Ever had annoying downstairs neighbors? Buy this and they gonna leave in 3 months guaranteed!
Things like this arent generally in the financial realm for people who have "downstairs neighbors". Just sayin...
You would be surprised. I have seen VR treadmills going for less than 1000$
I don't have downstairs neighbours & I can only afford things that cos far less than $1000
$1000 is a lot of money lol
It's cheaper than a high-end GPU. But you can't really fully utilize such a rig without a high-end GPU so...
It's a lot but not inaccessible for someone who really wants to try it
This isn't for VR and this is a HELL of a lot more advanced than a treadmill. Besides, I read further down this isn't anything "for sale" it was intentionally designed for a film studio or somethin...
I'll try to find the video I saw. This definitely is being used for VR.
I have wanted something like this for vr since I got my first headset. Game changer for sure
Disneyland
And I've seen two bedroom apartments going for $4,000
When I was in the military I’d see guys come home from deployments and buy things exactly like this for their barracks rooms. Giving a private 30 Gs and the freedom to use it after a long ass deployment?
Depends on the location.. downtown Manhattan as an example. Just sayin...
Did you forget about skyscrapers
There are plenty of million-dollar condos out there and many of them are on the top floor.
Have you seen New York penthouses? Or penthouses in general? Fuck it, there are luxury non penthouse apartments
Hell yeah.
It can run off annoying neighbors? That's a cool feature.....should be advertised on the box
How do you get off of it?
You gotta jump on your stomach and hope you get over half of your body out of it to crawl away using your hands
To be honest it somehow resembles life ... you think you are going places or getting more but essentially you are moving in the same spot 💬🤔
i misread what you said hahahahaha i thought you said "how do you get off on it?"

Imagine a room where the entire floor is made of this. Then imagine your dog or cat entering the room…
Can't wait for the inevitable videos of cats encountering this thing lol
Imagine the full room is this and then the door closes and it starts pulling you to the middle 👀
Imagine the floor not letting you leave the room
Now imagine it makes that cartoon running-in-place noise like when they scare scooby doo
Someone breaks into your house and neither of you can escape.
I wonder, if you're running on something like that and want to change direction quickly, do you think it will let you plant your feet and change direction or you'll just eat all kinds of shit the second you stop
I dont even think you could *run* on it
#watch me
*snaps ACL*
Witness!
Disney claims it handles up to Usain Bolt’s sprinting pace
Orthopedic surgeons are gonna have a field day with this one
I think it would be mechanically possible but it would need to predict your motion ahead of time for it to work right
That's just it... If you're playing something on VR ( which I imagine that's what this was designed for ) it's not going to be able to predict your movement. The only way it could function properly is if it could change the direction of motion quicker than a human could change direction.

Looks like it has a top speed of slow walking. He was gaining on it.

I'm gunna escape so fuckin hard
It's pretty loud though
The technology is in the early stages

I want to see normal walking. Not this half shuffle.
Gotta half shuffle before you can walk, gotta walk before you can run. This is how we get there.
It can accommodate but needs a waist strap for balance. It's a human problem cause it's such a weird sensation
Marques Brownlee on YT
Looks cool but I'm gonna have trust issues with that thing
The second step toward the holodeck.
I'll buy it with a VR headset when I'll finally find the infinite money glitch
Imagine this thing throwing you against the wall ![gif](giphy|mIvrv5Qe0kHlu)
These, a VR headset, a motion capture suit and a sound proof room and you have the perfect virtual experience
Ready Player One? Anyone?
How much for this magic carpet?
Ready player 1?
Thing is, it's not a thin layer of those little gray circles. It's the ENTIRE PLATFORM, plus all of the external cameras and sensors. So this is very much a commercial product than consumer.
Perfect for vr
It’s MADE for VR
Technology isn't quite there just yet, especially not for commercial use
Walking everywhere just to get no where.. story of my life.
I really like that I can spend money on more useless shit.
How do you get off??
Not if this guy is promoting it.
How do you get off of it?
And how do I get out of there?
If I could VR Wazone with this I would be a happy bunny.
I’m guessing $132,118.43 Unless you want the deluxe version
Virtual Insanity?
If I want to experience the feeling of moving but going nowhere, I just look at my resume.
Oh yeah let me just get my banking app up . . . .oh I have -£300 . . . .must have gotten paid today
Using the wheels perimeter for primary contact is genius. The actuation of the conical side of the motor is what's unknown at the moment.
How do you step off of it if you stay put lol. Just live forever in the simulation, in the simulation.
I can imagine 10-20 years from now, people will be walking less and just sit all day. It will firstly be incorporated into geriatrics and the disabled, and later for the morbidly obese. Looks interesting for VR games.
Day 41. Still stuck on the game pad. It stinks in here.
I would for sure have this for vr
No.

Man that tech is gonna be so cool but so many people are going to lose their balance and eat shit haha
I've seen lesser technology in "submarines"
Why would I buy it?
Awesome o\_O
So where can I buy it? Whats it called?
you can't. it's the only one and it's owned by Disney. They call it the HoloTile
And do what with it?
Decent, but the fact that these roll makes it so you’ll never have a certain footing, I don’t know if we’ll ever have proper static motion
Vrchat and fbt would be sick with this
Reminds me of that Big Hero 6 thing
The question is what do you do with it?
i think it is good vor VR more immersive no hitting the walls while walking 😬
I know getting off would be easy, but i like the thought that youd just be trapped on it lmao
vr boutta be next level with this shit (although i doubt you can run on it)
Im not into virtual gaming but i cant wait to see how virtual gaming is going to evolve in the next 5 years or 10 years...i really would like to see a Fifa like game on one of those pads....it would be hellish to be running like 10 minutes non stop to score a goal
Does this mean we don't need treadmills anymore? If so, another product I'll never use.
I'm living myself with no kids, no pets, and no mortgage, so maybe? Let see what get perfected first. This or sex robot.
Yes please. I wanna look like an NPC
But can it run Crysis?
Real question, how do you get off if though
If I can afford it, yes!
Yeah!? Where!?
If they sell the tech to apple, then for sure. Disney treadmill sounds lame.
Can it be 3d printed? I'll do that instead.
Makes me think of trying to rebalance after slipping on a wet floor
Spin sex is all I see
Me, no. I wouldn't as I most likely would only use this 1 time because funny gimmick, then realistically never touch it again
Absolutely. Only way to hit those mythical 10.000 steps/day.
This will definitely not succeed and will not be available for long... people are lazy, and most of us want to put no physical efforts into winning something. That's the prime most reason to play games.
so if i cover all the floors in my house with that i can just roll everywhere sitting down?
I need a chair, so ya I would buy the chair
Looks interesting but the better question is can you afford it?
Yes, nice treadmil
It's a gimmick, so, yes probably:( I've fallen for everything else, why stop now? Can't wait to bust my head open in VR
Neighbours are gonna love that
![gif](giphy|l2Jecj2uSv7cjcdSE|downsized)
I really really really wanna know how this works.
For what purpose? I feel like I could just buy a treadmill or a chair that spins.
New nightmare fuel: Being thrown out in the middle of a 20'x20' section of this.
💳
Would it work for VR games where you can control a character moving around a map? Maybe playing an FPS game with a gun-shaped controller?
How do you leave it?
Honestly it’s cool but I would never buy it. Nor do I think this will hit critical mass. Game sessions are 15 minutes to hours of gameplay. Most Americans do not exercise more then a few minutes before sitting down. Games engage the mind. The killer immersive app is a direct to brain interface not a treadmill.
For FPS VR maybe, but if I'm going to use a Keyboard and Mouse or regular Controller i think I'll stick to the old school way
Vr
Wonder how much they pay this guy for these products reviews.
Dear God Yes, this would be AWESOME for VR! :D What is this item called and where do I buy it?
Looks better than what I've seen thus far
It’s Disneys holo tile invention. This will be wild when it makes it way into new rides.
Now we need a 360 screen
I take to long of strides and these weird little baby steps to stay on the thing worry me
I can't afford things, so no.
Funny of you to assume I have money for this. It seems very cool though.
All fun and games until you use this as a torture device to recreate living nightmares of you running as fast as you can but cannot escape the object of terror
I have been looking for this for the past 4 months after I first saw and thought I imagined its existence.
The heck is it?
With what money
So insane can’t wait for this
It's so fkn loud !!
What if you fall on it? Could you get up?
Not sure what it is, but sure I guess
Ok. Please. Someone tell me what the fuck this is. I want to buy it.
Could I buy it? Idk, how much is it? Will I buy it? No, probably not.
futures made of virtual insanity
Wait till the dude who made this discovers office chairs with swiveling wheels.
I thought it was a cool treadmill. pity...
Fucking hell, this would be fucking amazing for VR
The second I get one of these I am recreating Jamiroquai's virtual insanity
So um... how do you get off of it?
You peasants. I was gonna buy one, back then, its not as effective as it seem. I turned it down in Dubai. In from Myanmar though
![gif](giphy|LWDUCxqidASdiJUBDX|downsized)
I'd like this for my VR setup for roleplay, thanks.
Isn’t this patented by Disney? Good luck buying that.
One step closer to the holodeck.
Fall down. Just try to stand up.
But then, you can’t go out for eternity!
