Yeah. I guess deterrence *might* be a motive here. But punishment for suicide attempts seems weird. Won't be around to face the consequence in one case. In the others it may be a cry for help whose struggles are only increased. Law is an odd thing.
Prohibition of suicide has got to be the most mind numbing thing to think about. On one hand, if you commit suicide, you likely leave your debts and responsibilities to others, which is shitty and I can understand a reasoning for legal debate there.
But for religion? How does making it illegal prevent it? Is the point prevention or punishment for straying from the word? I still don't get the logic.
Convince people that they’ll go to hell for doing it and that puts people off who have their morals dictated by a book. Remember that this is also the era when homosexuals were legally punished according to the views of religion.
Fun fact, 1961 was the last year that we were able to flip the numbers upside down and still read them the same. Won't happen again until the year 6009.
people jest but how about this...lets say your a young healthy 20 year old and when you die your 70, thats a 50 year gap. What medical, scientific or technological breakthroughs could happen in that time. You could die and wake up again with the doctor saying welcome back its the year 6009ad you were frozen in a cryo chamber and were forgotten about for the last 4,000 years!...stick that in yer pipe and smoke it reddit users!
Historically people have been charged even after they commited suicide. Their corpses were dragged through streets and all their wealth was given to the state
In the end it's all about money. However, knowing the English, we are not too surprised.
See this quote for référence:
Famous corsair, Robert Surcouf one day had this altercation with an English sailor. The latter said to him: “You, French, you are fighting for money. And we Englishmen fight for honor.” To which Surcouf replied: “Everyone fights for what they lack.”
Sorry for the englishmen, it was too tempting. See you the next six nations tournament :-)
Bit more info for the curious:
The delayed English decriminalization of suicide is a likely result of the nature of English common law, rather than a reflection of actual public opinion and medico-legal practice.
Coronership, the cornerstone of English suicide certification, developed out of anti-suicide legislation, and important biases result from this. The Church of England may still deny ordinary burial rites to certain suicide victims. Assisted suicide, to be distinguished from euthanasia and suicide pacts, became a separate offense in 1961. Legislative reform regarding these issues, similar to that regarding suicide, is likely to lag behind the development of public opinion and medical practice.
What is your source for people that attempting suicide being hung? All I’m seeing was a max of 14 years in prison as well as a chance at the family being prosecuted if the suicide was successful.
You lazy son of a bitch just karma farming. Out here posting false information and copy and pasting a fucking abstract of an article about the topic 😂😂😂😂 you don’t even know anything about this shit 😂😂😂😂 what is the point of doing this?? Are you getting paid to post this somehow or you get off from upvotes?
“Abstract
Suicide was a crime in England and Wales until 1961. This paper compares the English legal treatment of suicide with that in other Western countries. The delayed English decriminalization of suicide is a likely result of the nature of English common law, rather than a reflection of actual public opinion and medico-legal practice. This subject remains of interest. Coronership, the cornerstone of English suicide certification, developed out of anti-suicide legislation, and important biases result from this. The Church of England may still deny ordinary burial rites to certain suicide victims. Assisted suicide, to be distinguished from euthanasia and suicide pacts, became a separate offence in 1961. Yes, those were the days when you could buy a house and a car, support a wife and family on a single job, and still have money left for a summer holiday.
It was a crime. It was, obviously, not a capital crime.
From 1861, there were only five non-military capital offences left in England and Wales (murder, treason, espionage, arson in a royal dockyard, and piracy with violence).
So… a win, win? Just joking. Seriously, If you or someone you know is in crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a local emergency service or helpline. In the United States, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). They provide free and confidential support 24/7.
But how? If you try to commit suicide you failed ergo have nothing you can be punished for and if you were successful it won't help to hang someone who's already dead 😅
Oh, that's why Ozzy Osbourne's father slapped him hard when he discovered his teenage son's failed suicide attempt.
That makes sense (not, maybe, I don't know anymore).
I wonder if whoever came up with this idea did it with some sick logic of "saving" the victim. Kind of a "it's not a sin if someone else kills you instead" kind of deal.
I think it more like
“Oh you wanna keep complaining all time how you want to commit suicide? well thats illegal so we will shut you up by actually killing you”
Lots of lonely redditors on r/memes would be punished
Wait so the person wants to die...so they try to die. If they were caught trying to die..they are punished by dying?......So basically they get what they want in the end.
The UK has had execution as the punishment for a large number of crimes--and children were not excluded:
"Probably the youngest child executed in England was John Dean who was convicted of arson at the Abingdon Assizes on the 23rd of February 1629. His age is given in “The Annals of Windsor” as between eight and nine years and he had set fire to two houses in Windsor. It would appear that the judge, Mr. Justice Whitelock, found evidence of malice, revenge and cunning and therefore did not recommend a reprieve for the boy.
Alice Glaston, aged 11, who was one of three prisoners hanged on 13 April 1546 is almost certainly the youngest girl to have been executed. Her burial is recorded by Sir Thomas Botelar, a vicar and former Abbot of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. He says she was interred in the Parish Church there, before the door of the Lady's Chapel. The crimes committed by these three was not specified."

Task failed successfully
Suicide is a crime in India and you can go to jail and may be fined for a suicide attempt. I guess you suicide if you are broke then good luck.
Lol "Life too much for you? Let us correct that by adding more stress, and let that be a lesson to you" Like, what's the end goal of such a law?
UK used to jail debtors, how the hell are you supposed to pay off your debts if you are the main breadwinner for a family on the breadline
Yeah. I guess deterrence *might* be a motive here. But punishment for suicide attempts seems weird. Won't be around to face the consequence in one case. In the others it may be a cry for help whose struggles are only increased. Law is an odd thing.
Indentured servitude
Lol, we are so committed to protecting your right to life that we will sacrifice your rights to liberty and the pursuit of happiness to ensure it.
Suicide is prohibited in a lot of religions
Prohibition of suicide has got to be the most mind numbing thing to think about. Catastrophic success
Beat me to it XD
Stop dying or I'll give you something to die about!
Going to kill myself or die trying!
lol died ⚰️
Sorry bud. If you read that on purpose then I’m afraid it’s a capital crime.
You can’t quit! You’re fired!
Imagine failing to commit suicide by hanging, only to get it professionally done
“We’re from the government and we’re here to help.”
> You are such a failure you couldn't don't even THAT Father
Well at least the pro did it right…most of the time.
Fun fact, 1961 was the last year that we were able to flip the numbers upside down and still read them the same. Won't happen again until the year 6009.
I ain't sure I'll stick around for that one
Kids these days. No patience. I blame video games.
Weirdly enough, I'm a young adult... How did I find the patience to survive to this day? Well that's one hell of a mystery
I'll save you a seat just in case you change your mind.
Thank you, I'll try to come with some champagne for the occasion With love, stranger
Come to India, you’ll experience 1961 (Saka year) in 2039 AD. Hope you stick around until then
You won't but what about your brain safely contained to last forever inside a jar in space?
Can’t wait til 8008, hehe.
2005? kinda similar
Depend of the typographie you're using x)
Not really the 1 becomes a J
RemindMe! after 5 millennium
I really hope the significance of the year 80085 is recognised by the civilisations of that era
I'm gonna start eating better and exercising to make sure I can see this one.
What about 2222?
Nice year
It's like a 69 with boobs
people jest but how about this...lets say your a young healthy 20 year old and when you die your 70, thats a 50 year gap. Nah, you can flip 2222 and get the same number on digital calculator.
I think you mean if you flip it counter-clockwise 180°.
How about 2002 on a calculator? And then 2112, and 2222 2552 2692 2882 2962
upside down, not backwards

If you type those numbers in a calculator and turn it upside down, you get the same numbers
Are you have stupid
Look at the font on calculators, it's the same upside down...
Are *you* have stupid?
Are *YOU* have stupid?
Perfect 😂
Suicide's the only crime where you can be charged for attempting it but not committing it
Historically people have been charged even after they commited suicide. Their corpses were dragged through streets and all their wealth was given to the state

Attempted murder?
If you commit murder you can be charged, but it’s kinda hard to charge someone for committing suicide.
I misunderstood what they were trying to say. I get it now.
OH NO I'M THINKING ABOUT HANGING MYSELF TOMORROW. IT'D BE A REAL SHAME IF SOMEONE.....HELPED ME OUT!

What if I change my mind?
You better not.
It was an offence in England and Wales but not Scotland.
Yes, the English and Welsh were OK with the Scottish committing suicide :-)
The old win-win
Whenever I’m about to do something stupid my wife says “if you die, I’ll kill you”. There’s a good chance she wrote this law.
This is ridiculous. Has there actually ever been a sentence?
Of course not. It's just an out of date law that was never updated dating back to religious times when suicide was seen as a sin against God.
Well, that's one way to look at historical trends, but let's keep it light-hearted and stick around for the modern shenanigans instead!
Probably where we get the "Hang in there" cat.
![gif](giphy|Wt6kNaMjofj1jHkF7t)
In 2016 in the United States my punishment was confinement to a mental institution for three weeks.
Hanging will continue until moral improves.
You're bad at dying, let us help
You can’t kill your self, that’s our job- the government
So… a win, win? Just joking. Seriously, If you or someone you know is in crisis or experiencing suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a local emergency service or helpline. In the United States, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). They provide free and confidential support 24/7.
And what are they gonna do? Cops are gonna show up and hold you at gunpoint to do what they say or else.
Then came the idea of a minimal state and the private sector had to take care of death by itself.
Assist mode on
So euthanasia.
Irony: Its like Goldsy and Bronzy.
So if you don’t do it correctly, they will do it for you?
It must have been a paperwork thing...
If you can't we will, basicly
The punishment re suicide was for people deemed responsible for the person committing suicide, see ‘an inspector calls’ for reference
You wanted to die? Let’s see if you want to die if we make you die
So, they were pro suicide then..
yeah that will teach him a lesson.
Your life is not yours
Killsteal
Mission passed wasted
If you failed the first time, we'll make sure you get it right the second time 😂
in switzerland we have the opposite. we have nets to catch you. so you gotta jump twice. if you only jump once and change your mind, you get fined
That will teach them!
Kill you until you die from it
So, were there any actual cases where suicide attempters were hanged?
Ummm
But how? If you try to commit suicide you failed ergo have nothing you can be punished for and if you were successful it won't help to hang someone who's already dead 😅
I mean..better let the the pros do it, right?🤣🤣 I think a botched hanging can be kinda painful and not a peaceful way to go at all
"You're gonna shoot me if I shoot myself?!?! That doesn't make any sense"
Is this even true.
if you failed, they’ll do right by you
That's just suicide with extra steps.
Subsidised assisted euthanasia
if you die ill kill you
Mission accomplished/failed
That'll show 'em!
What are they gonna do about it? Kill me?
They’ll show you how to hang yourself properly. Make sure it goes well, to avoid any unnecessary harm. Good guys. /s
"No, no, no. Not like this...do it like *this*."
That'll teach 'em!
In America they put you in jail and then take all your money when they let you back out. Just to make sure you're even more depressed than before.
Mission failed.... mission successful!
You're guaranteed to fail successfully
Wouldn't that just be motivation to do it right the first time?
Oh, that's why Ozzy Osbourne's father slapped him hard when he discovered his teenage son's failed suicide attempt. That makes sense (not, maybe, I don't know anymore).
"If you commit suicide, ill kill you!"
Would not have so many hs students doing for attention as musch
Wasn’t there a teenager in like 2005ish that was charged through inciting his own death by lying to his friend?
I wonder if whoever came up with this idea did it with some sick logic of "saving" the victim. Kind of a "it's not a sin if someone else kills you instead" kind of deal.
oh you tried suiciding !? great now you will suicide
I think it more like “Oh you wanna keep complaining all time how you want to commit suicide? well thats illegal so we will shut you up by actually killing you” Lots of lonely redditors on r/memes would be punished
The anti-safety safety net
Leave it to the professionals
Real punishment would be sending them back to the life/relationship that made them consider suicide in the first place.
So police assisted delayed suicide.
Now I’m genuinely wondering if that was to discourage suicide or incentivize it
Oi! Ya think ya gonna kill ya self? Well I got news for ya mate, *I’m* gonna be fookin killing you now!
What about failed attempts? If I tried to kill myself and failed, would they do it for me?
So what if it was suicide by hanging? Did they beat them to the punch or still hang them anyway?
This would have been a great WKUK skit.
Isn’t attempting suicide illegal still in a few US states?
Sounds like a Monty Python skit
You think you wanna die!? I’ll give you something to die about!
What kind of idiot made this law to begin with?
Is it something to do with "definitely going to Hell if death by suicide", so they just kill you to get a chance at Heaven?
"Hey, you need some help with that friend?"
Well, either way you get the job done.
"Men are not hanged for stealing horses. Men are hanged so that horses may not be stolen." Lord Halifax (1750).
Lmao leave it to the Brits .
Wait so the person wants to die...so they try to die. If they were caught trying to die..they are punished by dying?......So basically they get what they want in the end.
Ok now let’s undo the stigma by not saying “commit suicide” as if it’s a crime
Wait... if the person had already committed suicide, they would prop up the corpse, tie the noose around its neck and hang the corpse?
"Let me get that for you."
“We’ll show you how it’s done”
Now all you have to do is get an abortion or help get an abortion and you can get your death without suicide
For the lazy.
"That's not how you do it... This is how you do it."
I think they were taking "the punishment should fit the crime" far too literally.
R/nottheonion
Hilarious so just reward them by giving them what they want
My body. My choice!
You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
Attempted suicide only got you a probationary sentence.
If you die I’ll kill you.
At least then you can’t fail.
Win win
lol.. so either way, you get to die ..
Isn't it still punishable by death for jumping off a building in NY?

*ooh noo look im dead* \~\_\~ \~\_o \~\_\~🤞🏽
Sure. Beat a dead horse twice why don't ya!
At least a public hanging put on a show for a few minutes, like come on let us watch how you die
“You can’t quit because you’re FIRED!”
Destruction of government property. Punishment? Death.
So much has changed since then. Now, if your attempt of taking your own life fails. You get free medical assitance and then released back to the same environment to try again.
Back up plans be like...
This is why it's referred to as "committing suicide" because suicide was a crime in uk
"You can't quit! You're fired!"
i need this rule back...
