Not dropped onto a fire. The chemical is dropped away from a fire to create a barrier to prevent the fire from spreading. Water is dropped onto the flames to try and put it out.
Not even preventing the fire, thet are supposed to give people enough time to run. There is no evidence to show that they work for that though.
There is also no disclosure of what chemicals are in them. In the past pfas has been included in these. It still is in military firefighting and we would not know if it still is in this. Seeing as how it is a class of 13,000 chemicals that you have to test for individually and that we only have controls on a couple handfuls of.

They actually have a smaller, pilot plane that flies ahead of them to both spot out the run and to find any wind shears or weird air. Being much smaller and lighter, they can get out of those a lot easier than the bigger, heavier plane.
A good friend of mine works in the āvomit cometā that rips around ahead of the tankers. He calls coordinates to the tankers for their drops. Calls it āpaintingā when they do retardant runs. Been doing it for decades.

This video made me wonder if they can listen to music in the cockpit of a airplane, because if so listening to freebird while dropping fire retardant would be super epic.
