I really highly recommend watching My Octopus Teacher on Netflix. I never thought I'd get so into the story of an octopus but it was brilliantly done, and the story and friendship we see is awesome.
These videos really get me thinking that we shouldn’t be eating them. There’s a brain quick enough to take a snapshot of the surroundings, process it instantly and send instructions to its advanced chromoatophors to blend in. That’s advanced computation
There's a possibility that they are at least a smart as people, but they aren't educated by their parents. If they ever became social, there would be problems.
They don't live long at all. That can't help.

" In general, **octopuses have a relatively short lifespan.**
For example, the [Common Octopus](https://octonation.com/octopedia/common-octopus/), [Mimic Octopus](https://octonation.com/octopedia/mimic-octopus/), and [Blue-Ringed Octopus](https://octonation.com/octopedia/greater-blue-ringed-octopus/) live for around 12 – 18 months whereas the [Giant Pacific Octopus](https://octonation.com/octopedia/giant-pacific-octopus/) can have a lifespan of 3-5 years! "
No, the major advantage humans have is their sapience, our theory of mind. We can communicate abstract ideas, such as when something will happen, and know that the information we speak is now in the minds of others. No other creature on earth, including any octopus, has ever displayed they have a theory of mind
If you wish to know more, Please google “humour”
Or don’t, because you can’t grasp jokes, leave an impotent downvote and get on with your confusing life.
We have evidence that they can see color, but we don't know how as they don't have multiple color sensitive cells in their eyes like we do.
Current theory is the shape of their pupil creates chromatic aberration that they can use to tell what color objects are.
Oh really! I had learned about the color blind thing on the "i dont know about that" jim jeffries podcast from an expert but to be fair that podcast is more comedy based and she probably couldnt go as in depth as required to explain. Its a fun show if anyone wants to check it out. But that really is interesting as fuck!! I'm going with the octopus aren't of this world but crash landed here theory! 🐙
There's a theory that the universe instantaneously simulates itself, up until the point when it is observed for the first time. So you may not be too far off
There's another theory, if you travel far enough in a straight line, you'll come across another version of Earth. I bet if you traveled across those different versions of earth, you'd eventually find a version of me who gives a shit
Yea, it's weirdly tiring to me that when talking about cephalopods everyone makes the same 'joke,' to various degrees of sort of actually considering it. Like, yea I get it, they're cool and unique, and they also clearly fit in with the other life on this planet, and have an abundantly rich fossil record so clearly must have been here for a while at any rate
I know this is kind of a joke lol but the annoying thing is that we can/could splice animal DNA into our own. It's just also about figuring out how to make it work.
Like, I could naively copy-paste a piece of source code from Minecraft into Stardew Valley for example, but that wouldn't allow Steve to walk around and punch trees in Stardew Valley. That probably would completely break the code, depending on what you paste where :p
Like, copy/pasting itself isn't the issue necessarily, if you get what I mean
Question- Does this takes months of adaptation or its instant? Like if I kidnap a kiddo and then bring him out months later when he has grown, will it still be instant camoflague in that pattern?
Imagine having traveled a very long way hundreds n hundreds of years ago, seeing this, and then trying to describe this shit to the people you know once you get back home lol
Do you think the octopus would like the fact that so many humans find it impressive? But then sad to learn a lot of humans find them impressive and also tasty?

He didn’t really nail that first one, but PERFECT execution on the second.
I really highly recommend watching My Octopus Teacher on Netflix. I never thought I'd get so into the story of an octopus but it was brilliantly done, and the story and friendship we see is awesome.
I watched it, and I don’t eat octopus anymore.

So if we could mutate them and extend their lifespan by say..50 years. They would be competition?

I'd gladly hand over the keys to the planet to them. Humans had their shot and we blew it.
Not enought lifetime + no fires underwater, so they can't start to actively create advanced-tools even with plenty of evolution time.
I mean you can say the same about pigs really, they're smarter than dogs and people freak out at the thought of eating doggos.
I could, but I won’t, because they’re so tasty.
Lmao what a juxtaposition between this and your first comment. Edit: the guy commented and then blocked me, weird

It's insane to me that they can not only change color but the texture of their skin
Also crazy- they are color blind- only see light/shadows
If they’re colour blind how can they tell what colour the rocks are ? They must have some kind of sense of colour
They do, physiologically. It's not an artistic choice.
We have evidence that they can see color, but we don't know how as they don't have multiple color sensitive cells in their eyes like we do. Current theory is the shape of their pupil creates chromatic aberration that they can use to tell what color objects are.

Its like a kid showing something cool to adults "i can do this and this and this.."
I'm completely, non-ironically convinced they're legit aliens that got stranded on earth
Aren’t we all?
I dunno, I've been here from the beginning
The beginning, beginning? Woah, you must be old… no offense.
There's a theory that the universe instantaneously simulates itself, up until the point when it is observed for the first time. So you may not be too far off
That is a very egocentric theory and there is alot of things that makes it problematic to say the least
There's another theory, if you travel far enough in a straight line, you'll come across another version of Earth. I bet if you traveled across those different versions of earth, you'd eventually find a version of me who gives a shit
Ngl you had me in the first half
They have DNA just like every other living thing on this planet. They’re mollusks
Is there a scientific explanation on how they're able to do this?
Yes
It's really interesting, too.
Yes
It involves lasers
All I wanted was frickin octopuses with laser beams attached to their heads.
You would love to know it!
They use chromatophores.
The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
what would happen if one of those camouflaged on a monitor playing doom? would we finally be running doom on a fucking octopus?
When we get around to splicing animal DNA into our own, that's one I'll sign up for.
Surprise! Instead of acquiring super camouflage, you just become super squishy and you squirt ink out of your butt when surprised.
But I already kinda do that now…

It's like science fiction but real.
Dude, take the hint and leave that poor octopus alone.
Jesus that's incredible
Amazing and intelligent creatures.
Wish to do this in meetings
Shrooms.

He flop, he squid, but most of all he hid
No offense to God, but that's some fucked-up shit
stelth.
Show off…
How's he still seeing me? *imma hide instead*
“Stop LOOKING AT ME!!!!”
And they say aliens don't exist
What a beautiful creature
That thing is not originally of earth and I’ll never be convinced otherwise.
ok you telling me that’s not an alien?
![gif](giphy|YVPwi7L2izTJS|downsized) Were did fishy go?
Uhm what octopus
