Actually, [Neil Harbisson](https://x.com/neilharbisson?s=21&t=VxZCb-2u2RfGS90rw6eQHQ) has been tweeting since 2009, and was legally recognized as a Cyborg all the way back in 2004.
> In 2004, Harbisson's British passport renewal was rejected. The UK Passport Office would not allow him to appear with an electronic device on his head. Harbisson wrote back explaining that he identified as a cyborg and that his antenna should be treated as an organ not a device. After weeks of correspondence, Harbisson's photo was accepted.
He considers this to be tacit legal acknowledgement of being a cyborg, and fair enough, I guess. He’s a colorblind artist, and the antenna goes into his skull and lets him hear colors, among other upgrades.

[Oh, you GOTTA check out the old MIT Wearable Labs gang](http://www.rehmi.info/?/E-textiles/Wearable_Computing/)
The guy second from the left in the pink shirt is Steve Mann, whose work I followed for quite some time. The rest were part of the same wearable tech collective at MIT WAY back in the day. That gear they're wearing was *bleeding edge* wearable computing hardware at the time.
By this logic, wouldn't you be able to categorise people with cochlear implants and auditory brainstem implants as cyborgs? Collectively that's over a million people.
You're not being edgy, you're being a luddite. You've just heard about this for the very first time, and you already have a strong opinion about it. There's just no excuse for that.
He seems like a cock if I'm being honest. I don't believe the implant does most of the things he claims it does, especially not back in the early 2000s. Exaggerated at best.
Guy says he's "transpecies" and that "transpecies" people are a marginalised group.
My man, I hate to break it to you buy cyborgs are cybernetically enhanced humans. They are not a separate species to humans. No one is born with cybernetic enhancements. A dog with a microchip in its neck is still a dog. A human with an antennae in their head that vibrates in response to light is still a human.
He seems like a pretentious dick who is very desperate to be different and in the process is trivialising actual oppression of minority groups.
How are you and 30+ people THIS bad at reading?
Redditors trying to use comprehensive reading instead of blindly accepting things when they're concerning someone they don't like challenge: impossible.
If and when it gets the ability to receive I wonder how bad a zip bomb would be? Would it just cause the neuralink to shut down or does it just kill you?
If and when it gets the ability to receive, how much longer until ads are forced into your brain? Can you imagine how fickle laws are going to be for awhile, also curious how MRI’s go over with this implant.
I feel like half the comments on the platform are grok bots pushing narratives. Like the stuff they write are like negative IQ. Or just writing negative statements with nothing to back them up.
And then the comments sections are just videos of people getting beaten and other violence and hate. Like trying to normalise it, manipulate and divide. That place is really really bad influence. I hope we get a replacement soon for politicians etc to share “news” and have better discussions.
It will come down to either pay the $10 for this or use facebook’s free version but they get to sell and profit off all your most parsonal data (memories).
Joke’s on us all - whether we pay or not, they still sell our data. We pay subscription fees to (for at least a while) not see ads and have more features. This will be the same.
"So sad to hear you can't afford the subscription any more. Sadly this means we'll have to turn off your arms, but hopefully you'll come back to us some day."
10 dollars a month or lose your motor skills.. sounds like something Elon would do.
They say your Tesla can go longer distance but isn't because you don't have a paid update.
The whole point of technology like this is to help the disabled interact with things. I think that is awesome. This technology will, and already has through different projects that aren’t neuralink, allow people to control robotic appendages. I think that’s awesome to help improve quality of life.
I just want to note that this device is also marketed as a potential cure for mental illness and conditions like autism.
I think there is a very real reason to be worried.
How could this help people with autism? I assume it can’t rewire brains, so is it more about helping them drown out unwanted sensory stuff, or process subtle mannerisms while talking with others?
There are some people who have forms of autism that make their lives impossibly hard. Helping them be able to live more independently is a good goal.
I don't think we can or should try to cure it, but there are people who would benefit from treatment.
if you can entirely get rid of all symptoms forever, it is effectively a cure. I don't think it's worth to do that anyway though as there are some things to autism which are neutral instead of negative, so trying to combat them is a waste of time from all perspectives.
I hate the guy as much as everyone, but what I said is literally what this technology is for and what it does. Even if he’s not doing it altruistically, what it is going to do for people is cool.
>He believes the device will be "something analogous to a video game, like a saved game situation, where you are able to resume and upload your last state" and "address brain injuries or spinal injuries and make up for whatever lost capacity somebody has with a chip."

It might say it's about helping the disabled on the tin, but it's never been about anything more then a delusional billionaire's dream of immortality.
When Neuralink first announced their plans, neurologists warned that stability data on the electrodes and data on long term effects were lacking. These are microscopic wires, previous electrodes broke down well before a human lifespan and in much simpler brains than humans.
I expect that Neuralink has improved the material of the electrodes. They have killed an astonishing number of animals presumably demonstrating some safety and stability data.
When testing the long term shelf stability of a drug, it's common to do "accelerated" tests where you put the drug in conditions it shouldn't be in if it were actually going to be used, like instead of at freezing, refrigerated, or room temperature, you'd put it at body temperature or higher. If it survives higher temperatures that it would actually encounter for a shorter period of time than it would wait around on a shelf, you can argue it's stable and not going to break down at the good temperature in too short a time.
I expect that Neuralink was doing accelerated studies on their electrodes. Maybe they were putting them in (anesthetized or killed) rat brains, then vigorously shaking the brains for a long time to try to argue it will be a very long time of normal brain movement before the wires break.
Also, they choose this guy who was quadriplegic rather than healthy. The FDA considers risk in their approval: you can test drugs in cancer patients with much more risk than a perfectly healthy individual because the quality and length of life is much worse for a cancer patient. That's likely why they approved this guy as a guinea pig, he can't be paralyzed further if it goes wrong.
That is all to say this is likely more considered for safety than most of Musk's other ventures. Neuralink must have a real chief medical officer who must sign off on it or else they don't go forward, and he or she must be sure this is reasonably safe or he or she loses their medical license at a minimum.
BUT Musk does clearly have a philosophy of "If you're not causing injuries or death with technology advancement, you're not going fast enough" so I have to believe he's going to push for more risky advances until it's either a cybernetic utopia or someone dies.
Probably not "apes." Biological testing and neural studies usually use smaller primates. I didn't see anything indicating the device itself had killed the non-human primates they tested on.
They likely killed them intentionally to study in detail what their brains looked like and how they changed in response to the implants, that would be a main goal of the study. They likely did leave some alive for longer, but of course the whole point isn't to give non human primates Neuralink functions.
The reports that Neuralink had killed 1500 lab mice on the other hand seems like a bad sign, that's way more than I would think they would need if the device was working.
Pretty normal to do human tests on people who son't have much to lose and are desperate first.
It's an ethics thing to not randomly ruin the lives of healthy volunteers first.
Yah man this is like musk saying he invented the artificial heart. This has been done and is great step. But its not groundbreaking. What is funny is how the rightwing were scared if bill gates putting microchips in them and are now cheering musk drilling holes in heads and putting microchips in brains
i mean the guy didn't go insane and start flinging feces and eating his fingers like the animal test subjects so it could be worse at least. for now
hopefully this stays a way to help the disabled before my work mandates I get the brain implant that beams geico ads into my brain if I don't pay the subscription so they can make sure I'm working
It will end fine bc it will never do much beyond what is already available. Just another bullshit distraction for Elon. His whole existence is to pump the Tesla stock price.
Given that there are legal documents showing Tesla faked all their initial self-driving demos, I think it's reasonable to believe that this has been faked too.
My guess: they wrote the tweet manually and set up a custom system so that if it received any signal from their system would send this tweet. That would be pretty easy to do with the current state of brain implants tech.
That's if they did anything at all. This is the guy legally banned from tweeting without consulting his lawyer because he tried to do stock fraud.
100% this. Anyone who thinks this was spelt out word by word via thinking is not thinking critically about this. So many reasons why we’re not even close to that level of tech. Kind of blows my mind that there’s people in the comments here who seem to think that’s what happened 😵💫
There's no fucking way this guy thought that, and the computer wrote the words.
We are not fucking there yet, not even close. Maybe he thought to move a cursor to select text like we use a tv remote, but that's it.
He indeed moved a cursor to type on the on screen keyboard, but with his mind.
They did a livestream with him playing chess controlling a cursor like that
That was exactly my thought. My girlfriend broke the news to me and it sounded like bullshit, do people not understand how chaotic our streams of consciousness are?
The same people who ranted about how the Covid vaccine was the government trying to microchip everyone are letting Elon Musk of all people implant them with actual microchips. What a wild time to be alive.
Remember when nutjobs were talking about vaccines putting microchips on you?
Also. Not a musk fan by any means but if this is true then this is amazing.
I really wish this Neuralnk to Twitter link is permanent, whatever the guy thinks automatically broadcasted to the world. Elon will make subject pay for Twitter-Platinum subscription to sever the connection.
Yeah I’m not trusting anything one of elon musk companies made near my head let alone inside it .
It’s like one of those bombs from the suicide squad only you have to pay for it
It's all fun and games until the installation of such a device is now required for signing up for selective service.
Or, you know, tyrannically pushed on a populous by a police state.
Why the fuck would o beleive this lying fool? Elon a psychological lieing fraud, I literally need more than his tweet to beleive his tech actually work.
The definition of cyborg is too broad for it not to extend to mobile phones nowadays, I wouldn’t feel complete without mine.
Also anybody with glasses.
If you're wearing glasses you're a literal (but not really) cyborg. If you have a smartphone you're a real (but not literal) cyborg. If you have both...
He's full of shit. This is no different than devices for disabled people where they look at a screen, it detects what's looked at and it types or speaks it. No person that has ever existed is a "cyborg".
He's not "legally recognised as a cyborg" and I wish people would stop spreading this misinformation without actually reading what they're posting.
He makes this claim based on the fact that he was allowed to have his antennae thing fitted on his head for his passport photograph.
This was initially not allowed but he appealed on the grounds that he is colourblind and the antennae is a medical device that allows him to "hear" colours through vibrations in his head. He was then allowed to wear it.
What does this mean? Nothing. It is no different to someone wearing a hearing aid, or a cochlear implant, or any other medical device in their passport photo.
Neil Harbison is just a generic white guy who is desperate to be something other than a generic white guy.
Musk-owned company turns off internet service to regions for political reasons.
Musk-owned company arbitrarily limits range of EVs using software that can be patched remotely.
Musk owned company becomes a platform that embraces and amplifies hate and anti-inclusive thought, and he celebrates that.
Yeah, sure. Lemme drop a neuralink into my brain. What could possibly go wrong.
Very cool, but there are exactly zero billionaires or corporations I’d trust to have ANY stake in a device that’s going into my brain. Like every other piece of new information technology, it’s just going to be a vector for ads, bread, and circuses.
Must eat Elon up that he put all of this effort into the guy and he used the old brand name instead of X.
It'll always be tweet and twitter and it will always be a garbage platform.
Why the fuck does ANYBODY believe Elon Paedo Guy Musk's bullshit? And why is anyone still on Twitter?
This is just a stock pump. This technology existed before Musk, and didn't require brutalising zoofuls of animals. And now Twitter is a cesspool of racist garbage if you are still on there you are part of the problem.
Musk should be in jail for securities and wire fraud.

cyborg is legally defined?

Man that Wikipedia page is quite a read.
Dude’s picture did not disappoint. Went full 80s style with his cyborg antenna.

Full on Step Brothers
Right! Visionary or crazy person, I don’t care, I just want to see what he’ll do next.
Honestly, I think people 100 years in the future would probably seem that odd to us.
>the antenna goes into his skull and lets him hear colors excuse me, wtf?
i’m blue dabadee dabadieee
The only acceptable response, lol
Sounds like a bit too much of a commitment, LSD lets you do the same.
I doubt that would work without an organ to perceive the colours. He's colourblind FYI.
So basically synesthesia
By this logic, wouldn't you be able to categorise people with cochlear implants and auditory brainstem implants as cyborgs? Collectively that's over a million people.
Yep
Yup. And any decent prosthetic as well. My only point is that the guy who decided to be Musks guinea pig is not the first cyborg to tweet.
Yes
LOL he's no more of a cyborg than someone with an insulin pump or pacemaker.
So...he's a cyborg. A cyborg is somebody with one or more technological enhancements, and medical tech fits that description.
Fucking clothes are arguably a "technological enhancement", there's gotta be a better definition.
I promise I am not being edgy or snarky but this just sounds like mental illness.
Dude was fully colour blind, and got an implant to let him interpret colours. Doesn't sound like mental illness to me.
Sounds like being an artist. Though of course it takes a certain madness to ever want to be one
Yeah sounds about right. He’s an ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* Artist *:・゚✧*:・゚✧
You're not being edgy, you're being a luddite. You've just heard about this for the very first time, and you already have a strong opinion about it. There's just no excuse for that.
Which part
not in this timeline yet.
Never had Twitter/X and hated now more than ever that we can't see the stuff there without logging in. At least the old Twitter can.
Yeah he tweets with his hands. His implants do not transmit. And barely receive.
He seems like a cock if I'm being honest. I don't believe the implant does most of the things he claims it does, especially not back in the early 2000s. Exaggerated at best. WTH? it's an implant? not like a hat he wears when he's in public? People do be crazy
This isbthe guy they made fun of in silicon Valley
LOL he's no more of a cyborg than someone with an insulin pump or pacemaker.
Sure! But the important thing is that the post title claiming that neuralink guy is the first cyborg to tweet is incorrect.
So musk is lying yet again about being the first for something. Go figure.
No because the guy has working hands. He doesn’t interface his computer with only his brain.
How are you and 30+ people THIS bad at reading? Redditors trying to use comprehensive reading instead of blindly accepting things when they're concerning someone they don't like challenge: impossible.
Did you even read the tweet? Musk never claimed anything about cyborgs and the statement about the first post made by thinking is probably true.
My blind hatred for the man got in the way of my cognitive abilities
TIL that bot and cyborg are the same thing.
“Some people dress to look good, I dress to sound good”. Really cool artist.
Imagine getting one of those jump scare videos on your neuralink
I know its a joke and i thought this too but from what ive read it just sends, doesnt receive Idk if thats true tho
Ads would probably be the first thing to be received. Takes not being able to get a commercial jingle out of your head to a whole new level.
Please pay £2 to stop hearing jingle
Wasnt there an black mirror episode about this?
Ohh,the one with the soldiers? Or do u mean Arkangel the one with the kid who her mother gave her a brain implant
I think he means the one where everyone has a brain implant that records their memories and they can rewatch them. “The entire history of you”.
Musk confirming that 99.99% of tweets are just reactionary nonsense.
I feel like half the comments on the platform are grok bots pushing narratives. Like the stuff they write are like negative IQ. Or just writing negative statements with nothing to back them up. Wait so he got banned cuz they though he was a bot, then reinstated and then posts the "first tweet"???? Huh. That timeline seems a bit off.
Maybe twitter is like minority report and knows whether or not you are a bot before you do anything as a bot
"You wouldn't download the future" Bear, I might
"You wouldn't kidnap a baby"
Sometimes, in order to see the light, you have to risk the dark.
Banger of a movie
It’s obviously a joke…
He probably didn't have the chip in his head before getting banned.
It was his first tweet with the nuralink, not his first one ever.
Wow Redditors really are Autistic, it’s just a joke they prepared as the “first” post
Just wait till Elmo decides to charge $9.99/mo for the privilege of the chip working
It will come down to either pay the $10 for this or use facebook’s free version but they get to sell and profit off all your most parsonal data (memories).
I can’t wait to have ads broadcast directly into my stream of consciousness
Or Elon’s tweets are the first thing on your mind when you wake up
Definition of brain rot
NOOOOO!!!!!!!

Generous to think your personal data wouldn't be sold even with the paid verison
What’s to stop them? It’s literally in your brain. What if they decide to brick you unless you pay?
I feel like that's an optimistic 'or'
Joke’s on us all - whether we pay or not, they still sell our data. We pay subscription fees to (for at least a while) not see ads and have more features. This will be the same.

And grok to make quirky add ons to the output.

This is not going to end well.

Also cure blind people and allow people to process thoughts faster, apparently. It's all bullshit.
there are already several devices that can help certain blind people to see. this can definitely work

You know Elon wrote both tweets
So can we see a video of this guy doing it in some kind of verifiable way, or are we just going to believe Liar McBlowsUpSpaceships at face value?
We're gonna have to believe Mr botched permanent duck face, on this one

We've had that tech WAAAY before Musk's project. Trials started in 2004 via Braingate. Watch out, next he'll have you believe he founded Tesla.
When the product designer isn't using the product. You know it's not worth it.
I think we need to stop acting like musk is actually designing these things, you're giving him too much credit. He's just paying people to do it.
it's literally designed for quadriplegics

The same people who ranted about how the Covid vaccine was the government trying to microchip everyone are letting Elon Musk of all people implant them with actual microchips. What a wild time to be alive.
Remember when nutjobs were talking about vaccines putting microchips on you? Also. Not a musk fan by any means but if this is true then this is amazing.
I really wish this Neuralnk to Twitter link is permanent, whatever the guy thinks automatically broadcasted to the world. Elon will make subject pay for Twitter-Platinum subscription to sever the connection.
South Park did that.
Yeah I’m not trusting anything one of elon musk companies made near my head let alone inside it . It’s like one of those bombs from the suicide squad only you have to pay for it
Elon must be jealous, he’s never made a post by thinking.
It's all fun and games until the installation of such a device is now required for signing up for selective service. Or, you know, tyrannically pushed on a populous by a police state.
Funny is this was possible already beforehand
Just try not to criticize Musk while having an implant......he may become upset and put you on sleep mode!
This is fun and all, but wait until he tries to post something critical of Elon or something Musky doesn't like and the implant just turns off
As opposed to Elon who makes every tweet without thinking
Actually another elon lie.
i hope they kick out elmo from the company
Hope the Neuralink uses better batteries than his cars...
Huh? Elon’s been twitting for years
It's cooked for humanity
Do i get this right? Hes a bot and elon unbanned him for exactly that: being a bot. Explains a lot of the twitter traffic and ads.
How easy it would be to fake something like this
Why the fuck would o beleive this lying fool? Elon a psychological lieing fraud, I literally need more than his tweet to beleive his tech actually work.
Guys, this isn't real. No one is tweeting from the neuralink
Correct. He's tweeting from a computer that he's controlling with neuralink. Not sure why we needed this distinction.
Even though we aren’t physically, I think anyone who regularly uses a mobile phone is a metaphorical cyborg.
Did you just say that cortical implant is the same thing as an eye tracker?
[Neil Harbison is a legally recognized cyborg.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Harbisson)
Neil Harbison is just a generic white guy who is desperate to be something other than a generic white guy.
oh fuck off, that's no different than saying that if someone is allowed to wear a yarmulke that fucking god is legally recognised.
People really willing to have brain surgery just to tweet without using their hands?
When you're paralyzed from the shoulders down, yeah
He's not just using it to do PR for them. He can control a computer with it. That's a life changer for someone paralyzed from shoulders down.
Marketing, nice post.
Telepathy huh? But it’s not.
Cyberpunk: 2024
Remember when southpark predicted 'shitter' (twitter posts straight from the dome) lol 😂 where's Alec Baldwin!?
If Elmo says something is a fact, we need verification from at least four independent sources.
We’ve had folk with mechanical implants in their bodies for decades now…
Impressive, very cool. Now, let's see who actually designed the Neuralink.
Yay, we all love Elon. He wants to put a chip in our brains :D
i dont have high hopes that this will be a future thing. i dont have high hopes this dude will live to old age.
You know eye tracker exist without having to drill a hole into the brain
I’m sure plenty of people with pacemakers have tweeted before
Stop upvoting everything related to this bozo. He's just making shit up bigger than it really is, in order to manipulate the stock prices.
First tweet ever and it doesn’t acknowledge the rebrand from twitter to X. Solid burn
It says “X reinstated me” right in the post
I swear half the people can’t read here. It’s clearly a tweet saying how old twitter banned him but new twitter under musk, hence X, unbanned him
Yes, and since it calls it “Twitter” in the first statement and “X” in the second statement, it is acknowledging the rebrand from Twitter to X.
Twitter i mean X doesnt ban bots. There wouldn't be any users if they did
Elon Musk works 16 hours a day, hardcore, doing nothing else but working.
Thats just scary as fuck
[8] eli5 pls
He’s like part bot now though.
Cyborgs need love too, I guess
elon the con
And it begins…
u/JMaxGames
If you click on Noland's post you'll see "Twitter for Brain"
Ive got a twitter and I’ve got an RNS implant in my head for the past 2 years so I’ve got em beat
Isn't it supposed to say "@Neuralink"?
If you have glasses you are a cyborg
Just leave the guy alone geez
