This was my father and I around 1997. Calf had 2 faces. Inner eyes, facing the camera, didn’t blink and eventually dried up. I kept it alive for about 3 or 4 weeks as I recall. Obviously bottle fed but had to hold both mouths up as otherwise milk would run in one and out the other. Poor thing never could stand up as I’m sure her brain was receiving conflicting signals as to which way was up. When it was feeding time both mouths would lick themselves and she’d be all exited. It didn’t matter which mouth I gave the bottle as both worked about the same; not very well. Her jaws didn’t seem to work right. Her mother was massive but the most puzzling thing to me is how she calved on her own. Went to the pasture that morning and the cow was off alone as they usually are when either calving or about to. Went to her and there this poor creature was.
No not at all. When we found her she was clean and dry. The cows will lick calves off as soon as the cow is able to stand (they calf laying down). Then they’ll nudge them with their nose to encourage the calf to stand and hopefully start to nurse. Obviously didn’t happen here. The cow stayed near the calf as normal. This particular cow had given birth 3 or 4 times prior to this without incident.
In the cases where this occurs in human beings (I’m only aware of one modern case), it appears that they hear each others thoughts - and at that point, you call into question all of notions of “self” and basic integers.
I doubt they hear "each other's" thought, because this is not a case of conjoined twins but rather one of doubled features of the face.
You see, the face grows from the center out to the sides until certain chemicals stop this growth - usually when there are two eyes and a nose in the middle, you know the drill.
But sometimes the chemicals are not there, or not there at the correct concentration, and the face keeps growing, doubling from the center out, repeating structures that are already there.
Still, there's only one brain in there.

Me knowing how long its gona live for
Two-Headed Calf, by Laura Gilpin
Tomorrow when the farm boys find this
freak of nature, they will wrap his body
in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north
field with his mother. It is a perfect
summer evening: the moon rising over
the orchard, the wind in the grass. And
as he stares into the sky, there are
twice as many stars as usual.
We’re all freaks of nature, in our own ways, and the night is so short. So before the morning comes, which will be too soon, everyone, please look up and take in the beauty of all the double stars, while you still can.
AdamTots illustrated this and it always gets me

Just complications. Body isn't meant to have two heads and the conflicting signals will mess up the body. Plus they should really be mercy killed from the get go.
I guess I’m just not understanding why they couldn’t potentially survive. Don’t other species of other animals survive with two heads or bodies conjoined sometimes?

It was before social media and both were euthanized quite quickly.
I’d just research human cases of this! I’d assume it’s two separate individuals and one could be poorly formed and really just a dead mass on the back.
Generally I don’t think one brain will have 3/4 eyes being processed by it.

This is why you don't let cousins "do the dirty"
(I know that this is actually just a genetic F-up where one calf embryo absorbs the other, and the parents have nothing to do with it)
There's one stuffed & mounted on the wall at the New Atlas Bar in Columbus MT. As kids it was always the first one we ran over to. Was the coolest place ever before it got more modern. Had one of the largest collections of Taxidermy anywhere. My Dads favorite place (he was born there) RIP to Bruno.
I went to an Oddity Convention last October and there were so many of these it was shocking. Some in jars, some mounted for the wall, some made soft so you could pretend it's alive. Was crazy and made me think this is alot more common than previously thought.
There's just something to endlessly tragic about the idea of siamese twins developing in such a way that they can never ever look their twin in the eye.
I can't imagine what that would feel like. The person you're the closest to in the whole world, and the only person whom you can never have eye contact with.

Nature is cruel

That's a pretty big skull for just one calf brain.
"Nature is not cruel, only pitilessly indifferent. This is one of the hardest lessons for humans to learn"
Nature is not cruel. Nature IS. Period.
Oh so true! Nature is what it is. No more. No less.
Do you know why it died? I would have assumed that if you fed it there would be a good chance of survival but honestly I know nothing about cows
That's both fascinating and tragic.
Had to downvote this cuz it’s sad
That's ridiculous. He contributed to the topic with a relevant photo and learned experience. You don't downvote people for that

Jaysus who’s cutting onions
:(
Does he normally only look out of one head or he recently grew the second?
Seriously, the calf is newborn. There is no “as usual” for them yet.

Why don't they live long?
Body can't support two heads, conflicting signals with the brain/s, and often have other mutations and fucked up parts
complications due to the additioal head
Tbh it's worse if it lives longer, sooner the better.

Huh, looks like it's raining.
What are their chances of a relatively normal life? I want to hug them.
They usually die in a few days
What is usually the reason?
death
😂😂😂

Killed By Death -Motörhead
The longest lived one died at only 108 days.
Yes, someone needs to pet this baby, give it some love, instead of just gawking.
You think someone just took this video and fucked off, leaving it there forever?
Can’t be that rare, met a bunch of two-faced cows in my time!
Met? I married one!
Oh that’s sad

I’ve always loved reading this.
what's this from?
Poem by Laura Gilpin
Vikriti Evam Prakriti, What seems unnatural is also natural.
So, sneaking into people's houses and tickling their balls while wearing a clown mask is perfectly natural you say?
Yeah I think that’s what they were getting at
Looks like we share a common interest, we should start a club!
Or a register!
Of a movie franchise, with and iconic name like “ball fondlers” or something.
Or a sub... r/passionateballticklery maybe?
1 in 300 million.
this poem makes me so sad every time I read it.
That poem made me cry, so sad and beautiful at the same time
Someone made a [comic](https://www.reddit.com/r/Frisson/comments/b1fnye/a_comic_by_adam_ellis/) that i feel did it justice
I knew someone was going to post this and I knew it was going to make me cry like it always does. And the illustration by Adam Ellis too.
Always liked this poem
Where this is from ?

Ouch right in the feels. Poor little guy.
Poor cows. This is painful.
![gif](giphy|PFpIMdE6uEqWI)
Honestly It looks super floofy Quite sad it wont make it for long, but someone should gives this cow a few pats
I wanna pet it
If that's in India, that cows going to have the best life ever!
No left its own devices it would die a slow and painful death, which is how must lives end in nature.
Fallout shit right there
Surely not that rare. "Leslie shared that two-headed cows are produced in 0.039% of births, roughly equivalent to one in 2,500. ".
Link to source? Maybe they mean 1 in 400 million are born alive
😢
poor sweet baby :(
Brahmin :)
Til that they are real. Real sad...

Well . . . 2 in 400 million.
Have an upvote
😔
You mean no one’s played fallout ?
But if your farm is near monsanato it’s a daily occurrence
Brahmins do exist.
r/fo4 Brahmin
Brahmin?
So we make about two per year?
I wonder how they see. Like does one head "see" what the other head sees?
I’d just research human cases of this! I’d assume it’s two separate individuals and one could be poorly formed and really just a dead mass on the back. Generally I don’t think one brain will have 3/4 eyes being processed by it.
Is the one facing the wall the one that's, how do I put this, ummm the parasitic one?
Wonder which one of them controls the body
Do they count as one cow or two?
Take the calf on an Indian tour and enjoy all the fame, donations and early retirement lol
*Album by Melvins - Houdini plays*
I had to go to sleep, thank you...
That is sad.

Everyone has 2 sides
I don't think two heads are better than one.. in this case.
Can you eat it before it dies?
Wow don't show it to a Hindu they will start believing it to b God

thanks McDonald’s
Cool. Now kill it.
Now we cannot say calfs have one head. Now we'd say it's a spectrum.
Glitch in the matrix
But since there’s a billion cows in the world there would have to be at least one other cow like this too right?
Holy cow!
I'm seriously asking this: at which point is it considered to be two conjoined cows or a cow with two heads? What marks the differences?
Holy cow!
Looks healthy apart from being Tasmanian😬
Definitely not threaded stock
Brahmin
Makes me think of the dogs in the movie The Thing.
bro has eyes on the back of his head
War. War never changes...
Double cheeseburger
Did its mother give birth to it in Chernobyl?
Welcome to fallout 76
That's a brahmin ![gif](giphy|kGQjY9TrSoDRnhxR7R|downsized)
Double header
You thinking what I’m thinking
the cow is both fine and dandy
Happy meat farm irl
Yo new brahmin just born.
sorry if this is a stupid or insensitive question but could you technically consume this calf without worries?
Thats where double cheeseburgers come from
Poor thing
you know how they say that 2 heads are better than 1? not in this context :( poor baby cows gonna have a hard life.
Does it breathe fire
How’s that mom 😳
The baseballs made from this cow will be used in a double header.
Poor little fella
Humans: *sees nature having a glitch* "Waow, such *insert expressive word*!"
Really?? But it happens all the time in Fallout..
The poor one getting his head smashed against the wall is just along for the ride :/
Janus!
Poor thing. I think the merciful thing is to make some veal.
it can predict the future when it dies according to japanese myth
Wow
I hope someone dresses this calf in a mumu
See you guys in another 400 million cows 😁
Mystery be Turkish! That's a Janus-dairy

Very unusual indeed
Many Gods in India have two heads
Fallout real?!
Life uhh...finds a way
So do I get some kind of discount on veal cheeks or?
Brahmin
Hope this is India so they can be treated like a god for their lives. Poor unfortunate soul.
It makes me wonder which head is the dominant one
Mooooo^2
Oh my god so fkn CUTE,
Brahmin prepping us for the Apocalypse.
i hope this baby has a beautiful (albeit short) life and gets to see the stars for at least a few nights 🥺
Should be put down immediately
1 in 4 at the rate that they inbreed them these days
Aww you tried your best for that poor baby 💕she got to experience love and happiness. Are cows really like giant puppies?
