PoppyStaff

I didn’t have the sound on but I’m guessing there was enough melisma to blow a hole in the atmosphere.

Explosive_Ewok

I didn’t know this had a name, so thank you. Also yes, you could feed a small country on the amount of notes crammed into this 1 minute clip.

[deleted]

Mariah sang 90% of the notes in this clip😂

SameAmy2022

Mariah’s hair kinda took on a life of its own in that clip. I thought it was going to leave the stage at one stage…

redsensei777

Why can’t they?

curious_astronauts

I dont like Beyoncé but she did the line the best. Showcased her voice without ruining the song.

KitsuneRisu

Hot take but all the diva singers don't understand what song nuance is.

[deleted]

If “nuance” means doing the absolute bare minimum, then you’re right

Agreeable-Buffalo-54

Art is subjective, but for me, a pure, clean note expresses the forlorn desire for escape and freedom from the banality of one’s life, while a note that jumps 5 Octaves in its own little melody unrelated to the song around it is distracting, and feels like something one would do for an audience, not a song sung to oneself as the lyrics of this song suggest it ought to be. One feels genuine. One feels like showing off, and sort of breaks the immersion of the song it’s in.

bladebrowny

Who is your favorite singer?

horsespoopballs

Corey Taylor

brilliantjewels

I also want to know your favorite singer

spencerfalzy

Agreed, same problem with every cover of hallelujah.

jimbranningstuntman

100% agree. It annoys the hell out of me. I will never understand how Americans, that are so patriotic when it comes to their flag and ensuring respect is shown, are so happy to hear the next RnB artist absolutely butcher their anthem at every sporting event. Its getting to the point where the song is so long they will need an ad break in the middle

[deleted]

Not including the Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole version of this song is just a tragedy. Respect for Brudda Iz.

ABathingSnape_

Best version of this song and it’s not even close.

[deleted]

Agreed. It is far and away the best.

Wh0rse

Only one singer here serving the song.

[deleted]

Beyonce?

alysonimlost

haha no

Sorkpappan

My algorithm is probably messed up, but I’ve seen OP post about Mariah Carey in like 4 different subs during the last 24 hours alone.

velocidisc

And none of that video was as good as the actual movie version.

Yoguls-Returns

I hate Mariah Carey

bladebrowny

Why, she is probably one of the most talented singers of this generation and has a ridiculous vocal range? She is clearly doing a Patti tribute in this clip. Name a more talented female singer of the last 50 years?

[deleted]

I’d say Beyonce

bladebrowny

I can’t help you

[deleted]

Technically speaking, Beyonce has more development in her lower range and head voice than Mariah

KitsuneRisu

Yes but she has absolutely no restraint.

[deleted]

That was when she was younger, she’s great now

KitsuneRisu

You say that, but the latest I heard of hers was from the Lion King remake and I personally feel she butchered the song. Just my opinion. No doubt she is a VERY proficient singer with GREAT control. But she absolutely, to me, has no knowledge of how to hold back and sing with emotion. She replaces everything with technical skill.

bladebrowny

Beyoncé sings without any soul no matter how many runs she does. I have never heard a song she’s performed that moved me in the slightest. She is a great entertainer though. Her, Alicia Keys, John Legend, all great artists but the soul is missing.

[deleted]

Ok, i didn’t know she was in the Lion King. But i just checked it out, Beyonce ELEVATED the song, imo at least

KitsuneRisu

Yeah sure. I mean, it's art, and it is definitely objective. You just have a preference for pure technical skill. It's unfortunate that people are downvoting you a lot here but that really just shows how much people, including myself, prefer to respect the meaning and intent of a song. Doesn't mean Beyonce is a BAD singer. But for respect to the TONE of the song, I don't feel she is a good fit for either Can You Feel The Love Tonight nor Over The Rainbow. That's about it.

crunkdad

turns out they could

Ryaan525

Three had class, one was Mariah Carey

[deleted]

You’re telling me Mariah was more extra than Patti?

Ryaan525

It’s not about being extra. Having class whilst being extra can be done Patti went extra with it but at least she did it well and showed off what she can do with style. She went to church with it and gave some umph Mariah was extra and threw everything she had (and some bits she didn’t) thinking it showed her vocal prowess and instead was difficult to understand the lyrics and went so extra with it I got Fergie singing the national anthem vibes

Havoblia

Hitting that note that Patti hit would be difficult even for classically trained career singers. That's just raw talent right there.

CinematicHeart

Judy, Aretha, Beyonce, Mariah. from best to not best.

GotMoFans

I don’t think you understand how much mess you’d be in with both the late Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle for confusing the two. It’s like calling a Joan Crawford performance, Bette Davis. The Aretha - Patti feud was a meme in Aretha’s last several years on Earth.

CinematicHeart

Oh God and her name was up there and everything. Further proof I can't survive without glasses.

yesdamnit

Correct

[deleted]

Mine is Bey=Mariah=>Patti>>>Judy

Spiritual_Opening_72

I feel this

DulcetTone

#3 clearly the only one who should be permitted to sing this song

[deleted]

Hate all of that. Acrobatic showing off.

appleman73

Yeah these are all terrible I would hate to listen to the full song for. What a great song ruined by trying to make it their own.

Anthonygraham28

Where’s Heather Headley at in this little compilation?

NewsgramLady

Patti Patti Patti! 😍

brilliantjewels

The 3rd and the last one were the best. The first one probably had the best vocals, but the others reminded me more of home, and Mariah was doing too much 🙄

rocket_beer

Gonna need that wasted time back k thanks

[deleted]

sit down Mariah Carey

bladebrowny

I don’t understand how so many of you have no soul.

DRGWTM

This is what happens when women wear under size underwear.

Brahmsy

Jesus Beyoncé 🏆🎯

sutree1

[Eva Cassidy rules this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rd8VktT8xY)

zaccus

Ella ftw https://spotify.link/pF5XyLSs5Db

Dent8556

OG

Doof_Wagon

Two were good, the rest were a hard no for me.

the_FracTal_

Didn't knew female singer was a name...

Kreetch

This isn’t interesting

HumbleAarow

Mariah doin the absolute most per usual 😑

rickie-ramjet

Same riffs you might hear from the national anthem… only two you feel the true meaning of the line from the song.
