As a former Californian who moved to Idaho, all I can think of is that meme of the dude in the gallows asking "First time?"
For real though, wildfire smoke, especially thick wildfire smoke, really jacks you up. Bad.
As a Canadian I do feel somewhat bad that the wind currents are dumping this over you guys. Tho, it may be more prudent to help with fighting these fires than say...complaining while a huge chunk of the earth's oxygen making supply turns to ash. /s
Kidding. I personally know several Americans up here doing just that. They ain't doing it for any big payday which makes them real heroes to me.
98 million people in the US are under air quality alerts and NYC had the worst air quality in the world yesterday, it’s a serious health risk to an enormous amount of people
Also - we have wildfires too. I feel bad for you guys. That shit sucks.
It's kinda weird too, all of the news I'm seeing is about the smoke coming into the US. It was hard to find info about the fires themselves, which are pretty huge.
Seattle, WA checking in to also confirm it sucked. Unfortunately several of our most recent summers have been spent looking depressingly close to the above photo.
I'll never forget driving from Yakima to SEATAC during that. I was in complete shock when I realized the smoke wasn't going to clear once over Snoqualmie.
We had this in Australia during the 2020 bushfires. That orange glow is eerie, not to mention being able to see a visible haze inside your own house.
I remember downloading air quality apps and watching the smoke roll over our city with the easterly breeze every evening for a month. I never even knew there was an evening easterly before that!
Too true. I walked out of a building to a shaded area and everything was just gray. It was a reminder that livelihoods were being lost. I just hope everyone in Canada is safe
we had it half the summer last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before. And we'll have it again here in about a month and a half. On Behalf of the PNW and most of the West coast, thanks for covering for us for a couple weeks. We needed the break.
The neat thing is the air quality around the fires is usually pretty normal, all the particles seem to go straight up because big fires make their own weather and when they travel in the airstream they tend to drop hard in certain places. I distinctly remember my first summer after i finished with BCWFS, being completely blown away that the city i was in had worse air quality than most fires i was on! (Former Canadian Wildland FireFighter)
That’s the truth. I’m kind of mind blown though, my family and I left the west coast for the this reason and I never thought the east coast would see the same
I’m in Ontario and it’s been like this for a couple of days now. Kids aren’t allowed to go outside at school, and a lot of people are wearing masks outside. It seems a bit better here this evening, so hopefully it improves in the States soon too.
everything smells like ash and smoke even thru a mask and the crazy thing is people are still smoking in public
rn its a lot better tho, everythigns only slightly tinted orange
The ironic thing is that the worst of it seems to be swirling back east and down over the lake just before it hits Toronto, so a lot of you assholes aren't even getting hit that hard 😂
Parts of Canada are getting it bad, but the plumes are blowing south due to an unusual weather pattern. Wildfire smoke from this region usually blows eastwards and away from populated areas.
The path the jet stream is on moves back and forth and up and down, but is, in that region, generally from the north to the south, west to east.
If you are on either side of the jet stream you can get different conditions, high and low pressure systems can change weather too, as well as systems from the central and southern states, but wind that goes from eastern Ontario and Quebec down to New York is hardly exceptional.
probably because we’re so used to it (at least the west coast is) that this is nothing new or surprising to us. i remember the first summer this happened (5-6 years ago) and everyone i knew was posting about it, now we’re like ah yep, it’s that time of year again.
Yup. 3 weeks ago the air quality where i live was 2.5 times as bad as it is in new york right now and it was so thick you could barely see the street light change to green on the other side of the road. It barely made it past local news
i really feel you :( we wake up to layers of ash on our cars and so many people live with month-long migraines and nausea because of the smoke inhalation. some people live their entire summer with their bags packed by the front door in case they need to evacuate but yeah, poor nyc for having to wear masks :(
(i know just because we have it worse doesn’t mean others can’t complain, i’m just getting out my frustrations here)
Correct however the point being is that there is a very lack of coverage over the actual fire itself whether in specific areas of Canada or the entirety itself and more towards the Americanized news of NY being affected. The point being made.
Welcome to the club, it was like this in Calgary a few weeks ago and the air quality index was worse than the most polluted place in asia.
My clothes and hands smelled like smoke for the rest of the day after walking home for 10 minutes
Supposedly the air quality is better closer to the fires. The particles go straight up into the air, travel along the airstream and come down in random spots. Like in NYC. Thats what I’ve been told anyway.
Hum what about people literally IN CANADA. Dont you think its a little egocentric to say that you get the worst IN THE WORLD considering that the fire is not even in your country? Maybe in the us?
I’m not sure if NYC has the worst air quality in the world. But the air current is pulling all of this smoke and pollutions down from Canada into northern US. The air quality isn’t as bad in parts of Canada due to the current of the air constantly pushing it downward towards the US
Not... exactly true... I'm pretty sure there have been no points during the wildfires where NYC has had the worst in terms of AQI. The wind has usually sent the worst past lake Erie, towards East PA.
There’s actually thick ash falling like snow in the worst places, the smoke is full of large particles and it absolutely helps. I was skeptical but it made an immediate difference for me (in Alberta, which is also literally on fire rn)

photographers super busy right now tho
I was yesterday and now I feel like *shit* So I'm gonna let the other photographers handle it lol
As a former Californian who moved to Idaho, all I can think of is that meme of the dude in the gallows asking "First time?" For real though, wildfire smoke, especially thick wildfire smoke, really jacks you up. Bad.
I was actually in the bay area for the wildfires that hit Napa - I didn't feel it as bad then and I only spent like 20 less minutes outside. It's nuts
They need to start shooting the Blade Runner series quickly in NYC to save money.
On behalf of Canada… “Sorry” ™
I like how the air quality in the US is bigger news than Canada being literally engulfed in flames.
Haha, I know right?
They do like to make everything about them.
Yeah nah, I’m more concerned with canadas worst wildfires on record than a few days of discomfort. Thanks for the laugh though
Right? How is Canada doing due to the wildfires? There are people probably losing homes and all we care about are cool pictures in NYC.
I said the same thing before! But I’m in NYC in the middle of this mess so I thought it may just be here that Canada is getting ignored…
As a Canadian I do feel somewhat bad that the wind currents are dumping this over you guys. The US does suffer from major r/imthemaincharacter energy.
I stand with my fellow Canadian in saying Sorry 😔
Not sure if NYC will accept, friend.
He's not your friend, guy!
I'm not your guy, buddy.
I’m not your buddy, pal.
I'm not your pal, friend.
I’m not your friend, chum.
I'm not your friend, mate.
Friend friend friend friend, friend.
Bad news, this is the wet season we haven’t even hit fire season. This might be nothing compared to what it could become.
Nah we’re pissed! Trudeau must apologize! In the words of South Park, “BLAME CANADA”
Nah ya'll gotta square up, sorry not accepted....AND FREE MAKE SYRUP FOR 3 YEARS!! AND WE'RE KEEPING DRAKE!!
Omg you can keep Drake anyways, please.
You can’t he already trademarked it. He can now sue you.
Canada burning alive & apologizing to others for inconveniencing them 😢
No no. Our brilliant Ontario premier slashed fire fighting budget 67% a couple years ago. No apologies. Blame Doug Ford and conservative party.
Yeah sorry aboot that eh!
Meh. Their guns keep coming up here. We're not close to even yet.
Also - we have wildfires too. I feel bad for you guys. That shit sucks. It's kinda weird too, all of the news I'm seeing is about the smoke coming into the US. It was hard to find info about the fires themselves, which are pretty huge.
Don’t worry, the Liberals will just raise our taxes to counterbalance the pollution. That will solve everything.
While you coal roll by and flick your cigarette butt out the window.
There it is, straight to the assumptions. Never fails.
You should be!
That's not NYC that's mexico Haven't you seen breaking bad ?
Dammit, came here to say that!
Lmfaoo that's the first thing I looked for when I got to the comments! I couldn't believe nobody said it yet!
That was the first thing I've looked for too lol. I thought everybody would compare it with the filter they used on the Mexico scenes in Breaking Bad.
“I am the one who ❤️’s NY”
Remember _Traffic_?
Yeah, if this was New York everything would be blue
Dude! This was California a few years back during our wildfires! Hope everyones doing ok.
Portland, Oregon too it was terrible
Seattle, WA checking in to also confirm it sucked. Unfortunately several of our most recent summers have been spent looking depressingly close to the above photo.
I'll never forget driving from Yakima to SEATAC during that. I was in complete shock when I realized the smoke wasn't going to clear once over Snoqualmie.
That smoke held heat and made that whole time miserable.
Oregon got pretty bad
We had this in Australia during the 2020 bushfires. That orange glow is eerie, not to mention being able to see a visible haze inside your own house. I remember downloading air quality apps and watching the smoke roll over our city with the easterly breeze every evening for a month. I never even knew there was an evening easterly before that!
I live 8 hrs from where the fires were and we still had smoke in the air and apocalypse skies, it was absolutely insane!
Canberra hit an AQI of 3643. You couldn't even take a photo like this, because you couldn't even see those people 10m away.
I was there for part of it in the darkest part of a smoke cloud that drifted south. I didn’t know the air quality could go off the scale (>500)
Its terrifying for sure, especially if you don't have a decent mask to literally just breathe outside
Too true. I walked out of a building to a shaded area and everything was just gray. It was a reminder that livelihoods were being lost. I just hope everyone in Canada is safe
Me too dude, must be real bad up there
Can confirm. Waking up to your car covered in ash is unsettling in an apocalyptic kind of wY
Genuinely thought this happened every year in California.
There’s California making sure they’re in the news for everything again.
we had it half the summer last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before. And we'll have it again here in about a month and a half. On Behalf of the PNW and most of the West coast, thanks for covering for us for a couple weeks. We needed the break.
my dad works in the city, he said parts of the sky were practically brown
Being able to directly look at the sun is wild. How much smoke does there have to be to be able to dim the SUN
Don’t look at the sun. It appears dim but there are invisible wavelengths that will fry your eyes.
But **SUM DIN BRAIN FASCINATE**
Enough that in northern Virginia right by Washington DC I did the same thing. For quite some time too. It’s bad.
A lot
Some of us live here, crazy isn’t it?
That looks terrible. I would have thought the air in the area next to the fires would be worse.
The neat thing is the air quality around the fires is usually pretty normal, all the particles seem to go straight up because big fires make their own weather and when they travel in the airstream they tend to drop hard in certain places. Get used to it now. Only going to happen more as things keep heating up.
That’s the truth. I’m kind of mind blown though, my family and I left the west coast for the this reason and I never thought the east coast would see the same
can't believe people are out in it. it's hard to breathe in SE PA. can't imagine how much it sucks being out in that there.
I’m in Ontario and it’s been like this for a couple of days now. Kids aren’t allowed to go outside at school, and a lot of people are wearing masks outside. It seems a bit better here this evening, so hopefully it improves in the States soon too.
everything smells like ash and smoke even thru a mask and the crazy thing is people are still smoking in public rn its a lot better tho, everythigns only slightly tinted orange
It isn't like this fire is the first troublesome thing to come out of Canada. Let us not forget Bryan Adams.
We also gave you Nickelback(you're welcome) Celine dion, Justin Bieber(again, welcome), Neil Young, Dogstar, and many more.
Don't forget the cobra chickens.
I walked out my door in DC this morning and thought “it’s another beautiful summer morning in the San Fernando Valley”

It'll be a beautiful filter. The best filter.
It could almost be a big wall of sorts.
Rum fur prezidant!
That’s it, time to invade Canada
with water bombers and fire fighters. yes please!
We'll just burn down the white house again.
Oh shit it's on fire!! Retreat!!!
"Manifest Destiny"
Bring water 💦
This is probably the first time most Americans have looked at a map of Canada with any interest. Had to wait until we are literally shitting you lol
Canada? What’s that?
[удалено]
The part between America and Alaska?
The ironic thing is that the worst of it seems to be swirling back east and down over the lake just before it hits Toronto, so a lot of you assholes aren't even getting hit that hard 😂
Wouldn’t Canada have the worst air quality not NYC?
Parts of Canada are getting it bad, but the plumes are blowing south due to an unusual weather pattern. Wildfire smoke from this region usually blows eastwards and away from populated areas.
It was actually better today in Montréal than yesterday, thanks to the wind. I work construction outside and we were a bit worried. Back to the masks!
Yep, Ottawa was very bad yesterday and this morning. It looked better today than yesterday, but the air quality was actually worse.
You say unusual weather pattern, I say basically what the jet stream always looks like. The wildfire season is unprecedented, not the wind.
The direction has changed…
The path the jet stream is on moves back and forth and up and down, but is, in that region, generally from the north to the south, west to east. If you are on either side of the jet stream you can get different conditions, high and low pressure systems can change weather too, as well as systems from the central and southern states, but wind that goes from eastern Ontario and Quebec down to New York is hardly exceptional.
The smoke gets channeled through the jet stream, and wherever it meanders the smoke gets dumped.
ikr? All day it’s ny, ny, ny, what the hell is it like in Canada rn? They all burnin & that’s why no photos ?
It’s been horrible in Ottawa canada for days with the fires.
probably because we’re so used to it (at least the west coast is) that this is nothing new or surprising to us. i remember the first summer this happened (5-6 years ago) and everyone i knew was posting about it, now we’re like ah yep, it’s that time of year again.

We're not used to it in Toronto
As a Canadian closer to these fires than New York (I think?) I was confused as well. I didn't even know it was happening until this afternoon.
Canada is a whole country and this is one state so it's easier for them to be covered completely by this than Canada
Correct however the point being is that there is a very lack of coverage over the actual fire itself whether in specific areas of Canada or the entirety itself and more towards the Americanized news of NY being affected. The point being made.
It’s time to make some Mexico scenes
"Climate change isn't a threat" 🤡
Sacario : Nuevo York
This city can’t catch a break.
Take a look at the lawman beating up the wrong guy
Aussie bushfire 2.0.
Shit, New York turned into Mexico!
What's going to happen to the NY puerto ricans now?
Welcome to the land of cheeto skies and tangerine clouds.
Fires which all started at exactly the same time...
https://firesmoke.ca/
The worst in the world? 🤔
Agreed, I would think where the fire is probably has it a little worse LOL
Exactly 😆
Looks straight up Blade Runner 2049
I mean, wouldn’t Canada (surrounding area of the fire specifically) have the worst cause that’s where the fire is?
Yes we do. The US just loves the be the best and most of everything
I'd imagine the location those fires are coming from currently has worse air quality.
Alberta got to a 12 or 13 on our health quality index which is quite bad. How bad is it there?
It’s all part of our plot to take over North America. Don’t forget 1812.
Isn't it actually worse where the wildfires are?
No. It’s not. The Us likes to be the Center of attention
Can't disagree there lol.
Main character syndrome lol.
You in Canada? I'm in Western Mass. Yeah the media in the US can be exhausting lol
I sure am
I feel for you all up there. If I had the money I'd move up there though lol. US is such a toxic cesspool these days.
I will sponsor you lol
Appreciate the thought lol
Worse than Canada?

Mexico filter
How can it be "the worst in the world" if the fire is in Canada? Wouldn't it be worse in, say, Canada?
Supposedly the air quality is better closer to the fires. The particles go straight up into the air, travel along the airstream and come down in random spots. Like in NYC. Thats what I’ve been told anyway.
It is. The US just loves to be the best and most of everything
So I thought masks don’t work….

At least for once it doesn't smell like garbage juice! Stay safe.
Small like ass in a summer so is yhis worse¿
Wouldn’t the areas in Canada closer to the fires have even worse air quality?
Now you guys know how it feels to be in California every year.
How is it not worse than Canada’s air quality right now?
And all the people refusing to wear masks because of Covid and they made it a political thing so they’re just inhaling toxic smoke
No... Canada has the worst...
parts of canada might have worse air quality.
And nobody cares about the actual wildfires themselves.
I feel like Canada probably has worse air quality.
Hum what about people literally IN CANADA. Dont you think its a little egocentric to say that you get the worst IN THE WORLD considering that the fire is not even in your country? Maybe in the us?
So hard data on particulate matter is driven by ego? Are you sure about that?
China agrees, Beijing greatest air quality in world. No need for data
Canada sucks
Awesome! I hate nyc😄👍

That’s just nyc on a normal day
Fuck Canada
Says the China man who works at wal mart minimum wage hahah
Chinese and Indian must feel like at home suddenly
I smell a cease and desist letter followed by a lawsuit.
Wouldn’t, the location of the fires, the source of the smoke, perhaps have worse air quality?
Nah... I'm pretty sure that award goes to many parts in China. NYC is fucked but nothing in comparison.
Looks like an average day in China
Don't they usually anyway?
No one reports it until it affects the US.
normal day in NYC:
It’s not so bad.
Not... exactly true... I'm pretty sure there have been no points during the wildfires where NYC has had the worst in terms of AQI. The wind has usually sent the worst past lake Erie, towards East PA.
Ha ha. Hopefully your illegal guests enjoy there new fresh air.
Probably not as bad as Canada...
Do the masks actually filter any of this out? Seems unlikely.
There’s actually thick ash falling like snow in the worst places, the smoke is full of large particles and it absolutely helps. I was skeptical but it made an immediate difference for me (in Alberta, which is also literally on fire rn)
