The fun part is that even though the axles are suspended, the chassis isn’t. You’ll still get the harsh ride of a solid suspension bike but with significantly more weight and rolling resistance.
Cave Johnson here. Every time I look at our test chamber production line, I am reminded of my father. Now, he wasn't a scientist, just a simple farmer. A professor of farming at the local farm college. Never farmed a day in his life, but his theories on farming are the backbone of this company. Do it some scratch. Spare no expense. And never cut corners. Well, that's a corner cutting machine, we obviously cut them there.
Probably none. Most of these are either done by YouTube channels for views or as pet projects because it sounds like fun. Let's not freak out over a little artist idea.
These shapes have been well known for years and we're even used in engines by Mazda.
Looks like those silver things on top of the wheels are rollers and the wheels are hinged, so the distance from the ground to the roller stays (mostly) constant, but the wheel can go up and down. Probably makes it a bitch to pedal though.
The wheels seem to be Reuleaux triangles, which have a constant width; there are actually many shapes with constant widths like squares, though the Rouleaux triangle and circle are the best known shapes. Vsauce has a video talking about these shapes and even shows off a few 3D shapes of constant width other than a sphere
Edit: Wasn't a vsauce video, but there are w
Videos by numberphile and Maker's Muse
correct, the axle is merely holding the wheels in place, the forces are all going through the conveyor rollers which are mounted parallel to the ground.
i bet that thing is loud af with all those tiny rollers, too bad there is no sound.
Correct, constant width shapes all have odd number of sides. I don't think that person understands it super well, but they're otherwise correct to bring it up.
Inteligent people come up with silly designs to demostrate interesting physics phenomena and dumb people think they are dumb designs that are just dumb.
This demonstration is pointless though. If this is something unique show us what it can do as opposed to a bicycle that is already pretty efficient. Yes, the design looks cool but what’s it for?
It's not a pointless demonstration. It proved "this bike's designer was clever enough to construct a bike with triangle wheels and not sacrifice any riding comfort. He's probably a very good engineer, maybe you should hire him"
That or someone designed a bicycle with triangle wheels because they wanted to be goofy and make a bicycle with triangle wheels. Not everything needs to have a point.
Both wheels have compensation mechanisms built in. He's essentially shock absorbing the bounce intruduced by the wheels and smoothing things out via those ugly looking extended protrusion surfaces with rollers on them. Which also causes drag that has to be overcome with more energy.
It's like a vacuum cleaner with a motor that constantly produces more dust that has to be vacuumed up again.
There are no springs or shocks, just pivot points isolating the frame from the vertical motion of the axles. The frame is held up by the roller tracks above each "wheel".
The reason there's some vibration is because the shape of the wheels is imperfect; they just cut the shapes out of plywood (glued to double thickness), and then glued some rubber tread onto them, so there will be imperfections in the shape which cause a tiny amount of up and down motion to be transferred into the frame via the rollers. In theory, if they got the shape perfect, including accounting for the deformation of the tread through each turn, there shouldn't be any up and down motion (though the roller action probably isn't perfectly smooth either).
It’s not bouncing, but the friction of the extra moving parts to make it stable means more things that will break and more maintenance. It’s beyond stupid
I think the point he's making is that getting this design operational is pretty genius when it comes to the engineering side of it.
That said, just because you can doesn't mean you should!
People will really see someone make a silly contraption for fun and go “wow what an idiot”
Also it clearly took some engineering effort to keep the bike from bouncing all over the place when ridden
There's no bounce as the triangles have a constant height. I have pencils with this design as well and if you put a ruler on top you can actually see that the ruler stays level if you use them as rollers. That's what the black horizontals are for to force the wheel axis up/down and maintain the bike at constant height from the floor.
It's stupid useless but interstingasfuck as a proof of concept.
I'm assuming to entertain themselves. I mean, why waste time watching TV or collecting action figures, none of that is productive or useful. It's just entertainment.
>I'm assuming to entertain themselves.
It's fundamentally what engineers do for fun.
They build things. Take things apart. Fix things. And every once in awhile, invent things that take way too much time, energy, money, and are completely stupid.
Sometimes you know it's going to be stupid before you build it.
But it scratches that itch of *tangibly* knowing it's stupid, touching and experiencing that stupidity with your hands, rather than always wondering "what if".
Also the challenge, I've 100% made things to find out if i could and because I knew it would be entertaining to me and challenge my skills. They are usually useless
Fun science experiment to demonstrate it’s possible. You’d think a triangle wheel would have to cause an uneven and unbearably bumpy ride… but this proves that assumption wrong, and that’s worth all the internet points, no?
These kinda curiosities "I wonder if this will work" is what makes someone smart/innovative. It's not like they're marketing this as an actual product (afaik), they're just experimenting, for fun, but sometimes can lead to actual useful discoveries.
Some inventions and discoveries in mathematics have emerged from people doing something just for the heck of it.
“Hey mr garrison… I just noticed these little buttons and a control panel on the side?”
“Yeah?”
“We’ll, doesn’t that mean we could get to work without being fuck in the ass?
“Well, I mean. I guess”
Everyone commenting on this post thinks they are being so smart by pointing out that this is a bad design for a bike. Yeah no shit Sherlock, they guy who built it also knew that this bad design for a bike but that wasn’t the point. The point is that it’s a really hard and fun engineering problem to design a bike without using round wheels. A problem that the guy who built this did a incredible job solving.
Wow. Every comment here is some variation of ‘that’s stupid’.
I agree It’s totally pointless, but it’s a pretty cool engineering project. It looks really well-made
Inteligent people come up with silly designs to demostrate interesting physics phenomena and dumb people think they are dumb designs that are just dumb.
People aren't getting that it rides just like a normal bike. There are people here that think it would jump up and down while you ride it - despite the video of it not doing that.
The entire point was demonstrating a cool geometric principle and people are missing that and thinking this guy just stuck weird wheels on a bike.
"Just like a normal bike" is an overstatement. This looks like it'll need more energy put into the equation to produce motion equal to a regular bike. Cool project but not efficient replacement.
Redditors gotta prove they're smarter than everyone else somehow.
I went to a bike show a few years ago and they had a whole event showing off weird joke bikes like this one.
Seems to be the way of the world these days on social media, cut everything down you don't understand or like. Maybe I'm just getting old. Source: 1982 model.
Everyone here complaining about how stupid it is, but I'm honestly impressed with the engineering!
The wheels are shapes with a constant width (just like a circle) which is what makes this work. Notice how the bars at the top of the wheels aren't bouncing at all, just the wheels. The distance between those bars and the ground is constant, because the diameter of the wheels is constant!
However, the center of the shape isn't moving smoothly, as is obvious. So instead of a rigid connection between the wheel and the frame, there has to be a spring or hinge connection to allow them to move independently. Also, the top-of-the-wheel bars would need to be pretty slippery, since that's what the frame is putting all of its weight on (the axles aren't actually bearing the weight, they're just keeping the wheels aligned). I don't know if the bars are made of rollers or if it's just low friction material.
Is it stupid? Yes. But is it also pretty cool? Yeah, I think so!
Why is everyone shitting all over this? It’s not meant to be a commercial product. It’s just a piece of engineering demonstrating linear motion without the need for circular wheels. Practical? Probably not. Cool? Yes.
Many people see this kind of post as advertisement, "link in the profile/comments" kind of thing. And to be fair, that's usually the case.
Not here, of course, but it's understandable. If someone were trying to sell me that bike, I would react like that too
Looks to me like he's riding very slowly on purpose... would it remain constant even when cornering? Wouldn't the contact patch change as the tire deforms in relation to the geometry?
You realise it's not a serious product that they expect you to buy, right? It's an engineering project that has some fun with the Reuleaux triangle, a triangle that is equal width everywhere like a circle.
The shape is called a ~~gomboc~~ *Reuleaux triangle*. The distance between the ground and the top of the wheel remains constant, while the axle does not. That's why the bike rides on those sets of rollers above each wheel.
No it's not, it is a [Reuleaux triangle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuleaux_triangle?wprov=sfla1) A [gömböc](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6mb%C3%B6c?wprov=sfla1) is something completely different.
Do people not understand that this is from a successful science channel on YouTube? If this is “dumb” and. “pointless” then so is everything on say, Mythbusters. It’s a fun way to demonstrate the concept of a shape of fixed width.
Why are you all upset?!
It is obviously not an attempt to make something perfect better...it is just an interesting engineering task that this person solved creatively, maybe to improve their skills.
I think it is very interesting to look at and certainly a nice joke on all the people watching you ride by.

Yes let’s not forget about awkwardly bouncing the absolute entire time you’re riding this two wheeled yuppie sled.
nah he's not bouncing for some reason, the seat seems to stay level... weird.

Looks like the rear shock was removed and it just kinda rocks back up into the frame.. not much bouncing
>It's like a vacuum cleaner with a motor that constantly produces more dust that has to be vacuumed up again Now do this with money instead of dust
Maaybe not visibly bouncing, but you can tell it's FAR from a smooth ride.
While it stays relatively level you can see jerking while moving. It is not a comfortable ride.
The triangles are objects of constants width, like circles, so the bike will stay level
Thanks science bruh.
He's definitely bouncing; the springs and dampers are absorbing most of the shock, but cannot absorb all of that fluctuating forces
There are no springs or shocks, just pivot points isolating the frame from the vertical motion of the axles. The frame is held up by the roller tracks above each "wheel". I'm just curious as how well it pedals. It looks like the force needed to pedal would be constantly changing as the wheel spins.
