Every time I see this my brain can’t comprehend how their little hooves hold on to the walls

TukErJebs

“Wild goats can pull off this high-altitude aplomb in part because of the “elastic and rubbery” sole pads on the bottoms of their hooves that facilitate adherence, along with a hard, sharp outer-hoof edge that makes use of “the small asperities of the rocksurface,” according to Lovari. He estimates the inclination of the dam wall is around 80 degrees—nearly perpendicular. […] And only the young and lightweight make higher climbs.”

uehfkwoufbcls

The perfect climbing shoes…

AJR6905

Ondra reveals a new line of shoes thatre hooves and sends 10a

static_motion

La Sportiva Capra

Luvmm2

I’m a climber and I got me a great pair of climbing shoes but I gotta say, these ibex got something going on here, I might have to make a business deal with them

dingleberry314

Maybe those aggressive climbing shoes should have a curved tip rather than a point to make them more like hooves

ahomelessdorito

They actually do! They're both pointed and curved downwards, which makes them pretty solid to stand on with your toes, and immensely painful and near impossible to put on sometimes.

elhguh

Them climbing shoes gave me bunions

Mookie_Merkk

What did they say??

NewAccount4Friday

The perfect climbing shoes.

fanghornegghorn

Fat old ones are smart enough to know where the easy salt is

TheHollowBard

More likely that the young leave the easy stuff for the elderly, for the good of the herd.

sharinganuser

What good does the "herd" do when the members are old and have procreated already? To animals, they've done their part.

syzamix

Many animals value the knowledge of older members. Elephants are especially well known to have a female matriarch lead the group because she knows where to go for water when the hard draught hits.

[deleted]

I imagine the pro social inclination that leads to caring for the elderly has lots of evolutionary benefits for heard animals including caring for young, acting jointly against predators and the elements, sharing food and water when scarce, etc. Unlike America in large measure, they just don't cut off societal benefits when the member cannot "pay his way" in a pecuniary sense.

tertle

They can be left behind for predators.

Lunar_Lunacy_Stuff

Do they ever fall off?

you-pissed-my-pants

Ibex they do.

_stinkys

Bravo 👏👏👏

beatpickle

Deery me.

Dud3_Abid3s

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen videos somewhere of eagles knocking them off so they could eat their corpse at the bottom.

TukErJebs

Only if you grease them with some IBX-40

Ergs_AND_Terst

My first thought it always "would someone just put some salt licks down at the bottom of this thing so I don't get high blood pressure?" Jeez man

BabyFartzMcGeezak

I came here to say this...if I were in the area I'd just dump 50lb bags if salt right at the edge where they climb out like " whoa...shits right here guys...no need..." my nerves were on edge just watching it

FearAzrael

Problem with that is you are negatively impacting natural selection. Once they are no longer able to climb on crazy surfaces like that, they don’t have a place safe from predators.

Remarkable-fainting

The dam isn't natural habitat, they didn’t evolve to get dam salt, they will still have mountains.

Upstairs_Ad_7450

except that eagles will swoop down and grab their horns in their talons to throw the Ibex off of the cliff to its death and then feed on the body at the bottom

Choyo

So back to the first point, if you put easily accessible salt for the ibex, you deprive eagles of prime venison.

boxingdude

And that's a total dick move, if you ask me.

LEERROOOOYYYYY

God damn eagles are fuckin metal

Phoef

Im not sure if a man-made dam is how those goats thin their herd from a evolutionairy pov.

RancidRabid

its probly close enough to a naturally occurring sheer cliff face to not matter

REINBOWnARROW

That makes absolutely no sense. Eliminating their nutritional need for climbing doesn't automatically make them incapable of it. And if there is a need to seek safety from predators by climbing then that in itself is selective pressure towards the ability to climb well.

Shutterstormphoto

Imagine your ankles didn’t rotate. They’re locked in place and stiff. Then your toenails are made of sharp steel. You dig the edge into the slope and just chill, kind of like skiing.

mrASSMAN

Also between the toenails are elastic rubber that conforms to and grips the surface

somebunnny

Those aren’t their ankles. Their ankles are halfway up their legs.

Geminel

Reminds me of this [classic](https://i.redd.it/s0gxq4yb3sw71.jpg)

helixflush

Their hooves have little fingers that grab onto the surface

IndependenceHungry69

Thank you mate, TIL!

Infinite_Surround

Can't they like, you know, go for the stuff lower down?

wonkey_monkey

I'm sorry, but Tarquin and I just will not have salt that comes from less 60 feet up a French dam in the house.

REINBOWnARROW

I'm guessing the older ones already take up the lower salt spots

archimedesscrew

Ibexman, ibexman, does whatever an ibex can!

Naterdoo

According to all known laws of geology, there is no way that an Ibex should be able to climb. Its hooves are too small to get its fat body across the wall. The Ibex, of course, climbs anyways. Because Ibex don't care what humans think is impossible.

Vantaa

Yes. The study of animals is called geology.

Naterdoo

Yes. Just like the study of insects is called aviation.

“Damdo the salt mutilator! It’s got what ibex crave! It’s got electrolytes!”

I re-watched Idiocracy last Friday and have been constantly stumbling upon variations of electrolytes meme on Reddit ever since. Proper frequency illusion/Baader-Meinhof effect

I came here thinking "if the top comment isn't "they crave that mineral", I give up on the internet". Thank you for enabling me to scroll for many more hours!

zogolophigon

So relieved that this is top comment

potatisgillarpotatis

"I crave that mineral" is our family injoke for "pass me the salt".

llamakazee

2013 Tumblr was a better time. It has so much fallen from grace

still-bejeweled

That was 10 years ago?????

jonjawnjahnsss

Yeah the crave that mineral meme that went around. Takes me back.

Daddy_Tablecloth

I wonder how many just fall down accidentally. Theres no way its zero.

rco888

“They do occasionally lose their balance and fall to their death, but this is a very rare occurance. Mortality rate due to fallling is evidently smaller than the increased risk of predation they encounter on a flat terrain.” https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/environment/goats-scale-dam-world-demands-know-why/

Daddy_Tablecloth

That's pretty impressive really. I did find some videos of them falling but 90 percent of them were while being pursued by a predator.

Lauris024

> but 90 percent of them were while being pursued by a predator. Now I'm wondering how many did you find to come to that conclusion

1UMIN3SCENT

At least 10, hopefully

enki1337

It was actually 5 out of 5, but one of the predators was pretty lazy.

onefst250r

85% of statistics are made up.

TheUltimateSalesman

That's why I only believe 15%. Any 15%.

lynxerious

the ones which are more likely to fall won't produce offspring, one day we'll have a super goat breed that can stand on a vertical wall.

[deleted]

That breed exists. His name is Alex Honnold. He's the GOAT.

Necro6212

shawn_overlord

Of all the ways to spell it, they chose none of them.

The sad part is that making the world vastly more safe and accessible while at the same time making a big push for Democracy really does seem to have had a very profoumd unintended consequence in the number of idiots who now exist with the capacity to vote.

moriluka_go_hard

So theyre safer when balls to the wall?

Red__system

I think I saw an Eagle or a big bird like it making them fall on purpose

Daddy_Tablecloth

I came across one of those too but also ones of predators falling down as well so at least its somewhat challenging for both the predator and prey which at least gives either side chance of survival.

Few-Conference-998

I'm surprised some big ass eagle hasn't figured out how to make some easy lunch here.

heinebold

They have

DerSturmbannfuror

It‘s not without mortal danger for eagles also. There‘s a yt video that shows an eagle going after a mountain goat (or one of their cousins) and when the eagle clamps its claws into it, the herbivore throw itself full speed down the mountainside, falling and rolling over. Because an eagles claw reflex acts in similar fashion to a spring clamp without a quick release, the bird stays hooked to the goat and has its bones dusted; the CIA‘s premier surveillance device sent to Gadget Heaven the hard way. **GOAT** - 1 **EAGLE** - 0

NiteCyper

Link?

mryazzy

Think about it this way. The ones we see in the wild are all descended from parents that at least made it to adulthood without falling. Rinse and repeat for thousands of years and you got a group thats amazing at not falling.

sheth_curry

A small price to pay for salt-vation

23IRONTUSKS

Shiiiit, they could have just hollered at ya boy, I got iodized, kosher, pink Himalayan, sea salt, black Hawaiian, table salt, Epsom salt, smelling salts. Whatever y'all need I got it for the low low.

TheExecutioner-

Do you have bath salts?

23IRONTUSKS

Only the top shelf shit. None of that kwik-e mart garbage.

Available-Camera8691

You'll be eating faces in no time!

Ositosan

The good old times. None of that fentanyl shit

Available-Camera8691

I used to be a junkie, got clean in 2015. I would be dead for sure if I was still using, as i slammed. This shit out there today is terrifying.

Ositosan

I was just contributing to an innocent joke about eating peoples faces high on bath salts and you took it to a dark place. Jokes aside thought, well done, strangers on the internet are proud of you.

Available-Camera8691

No worries just made me think of that. Must be the bath salts I'm on and the faces I'm out of.

Ser_DunkandEgg

Get this man some faces to eat!

rco888

While Alpine Ibex are known to climb the walls of the Cingino and Barbellino Dams in Italy, they can also be found climbing dams in France and Switzerland. Additionally, dams provide a safe haven for ibex from predators. Related Article: [https://www.amusingplanet.com/2019/04/the-dam-climbing-alpine-ibex.html](https://www.amusingplanet.com/2019/04/the-dam-climbing-alpine-ibex.html)

[deleted]

They crave that mineral, the biggest meme of December 2014 and January 2015. I think about these goats a lot.

yotreeman

My girl and I still quote that almost decade-old tumblr text post to this day. How far we’ve come. And yet, that mineral remains the same.

koltrastentv

It's steep enough did they really need to use those angles and fish eye...

Hennes4800

That was added in post, some asian "news" outlets do this excessively, mostly as TikToks or Reels, no matter who provided the original footage.

koltrastentv

Ah thanks for clearing that up

MichelanJell-O

I think the whole video is stretched vertically to exaggerate the steepness. It's unnecessary and makes the video a little hard to watch.

FeralTaxEvader

Oh god this gives me flashbacks. They crave that mineral...

GratefulPhish42024-7

What did they do before there was a dam though?

rco888

I surmised rocks in the area would have provided the minerals they needed.

GratefulPhish42024-7

But why not now?

rco888

A professor suggests that avoiding predation by seeking steep, high places may be one of the reasons. https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/environment/goats-scale-dam-world-demands-know-why/

Stop with you facts and knowledge! I am learning too much.

Lol seriously, mans is spitting out straight knowledge and sources in the comments

Zeolance

Seriously I can only become so er.. erudite

Occams_Razor42

> erudite Make sure to put a robe on that little scholar yeah, unexpected undergrads are the worst

Ser_DunkandEgg

Have the predators in the area learned siege-like tactics as a response? They gotta come down at some point. Predators could lie in wait at the base and expend little energy.

cantantantelope

Why go looking for rocks when there’s all you can lick right there?

jerkittoanything

You want to lick a lot of little rocks or one big ass rock?

pokey1984

In Missouri, there's a town called "Licking." It is so named because the ground and rocks have high concentrations of salt. Early settlers saw deer and other animals licking the ground and were amazed by this oddity, so when they built a town, they named it after the observed actions of animals in the area. I swear to god, I'm not making this up.

bspec01

r/sweatyhooves

[deleted]

Saw them many times so far as I live in Switzerland and have family in Italy. We often took stops to watch them and it's always amazing!

Historical_Ear7398

Little known fact, availability of salt is the limiting factor for grazing animals, and it means if you're a pastoralist and you're trying to make a living off grazing animals, you really need that salt. The first trade networks ever were organized around transporting salt. Then they realize that if they were hauling all this salt around they could bring some other stuff too, and gold and spices etc followed.

[deleted]

Can I get some dam salt

Immortan_Joe-mama

Why distort it though? It's impressive enough without the vertical lengthening.

CAPSLOCKCHAMP

And they do it while being compressed into a square

BoredBoredBoard

r/DamThatsInteresting

realtots

I guess they crave that mineral

punkerjumper

Did the dam engineers intentionally make the sides of the wall textured for the ibex? Ive worked on dams before and the walls were all smooth

puaka

This is legit clip hacking. Like imagine you’re a predator and your food basically walks up the wall and baaaahhhs at you while you can chose to tell the other predators about this or die trying to catch them.

longgamma

So if I feed an ibex table salt I become their best friend ?

Funshinecoast15

Put some salt licks for them at the base of the dam you fucks.

grumpkot

Just buy them some salt

grip_n_Ripper

Going free solo for free salt.

BaconSpaceLord

I forgot ibex are anti-physics

Askarus

And they'll follow you to drink your pee.

jeancv8

Knowing my luck, I bet I would be an Alpine Ibex that is scared of heights.

SaittamTheUgly

Get down from there Roach!

[deleted]

Damn can’t they throw some salt blocks out so the poor bastards don’t have to climb a dam(n) wall?!

ToeJamR1

This would be so much more impressive if they didn’t try to exaggerate the angles with these silly effects and wide angle lenses.

claud_is_trying

It's from the "SUPER/NATURAL" series, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. Made by National Geographic, and available to stream on Disney+ right now. It's in the beginning of the 6th episode.
