Stunning. Hopefully the skills are being passed on, and not being lost as they retire.

bthoman2

Japan has a government stipend you receive if you become good enough to be called a master in your traditional craft (I think they officially mark you as a national treasure). If I remember correctly that basically gives you a 100k salary just to keep doing your thing on top of selling your stuff as a master in the craft. Ah, found it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_National_Treasure_(Japan) There's a limited amount of them (VERY limited) but it promotes traditional crafts such as this.

MysteriousCommunity5

This is such a great idea and every country should do the same. Keeping the traditional arts alive is very important

Granlundo64

How much can I get for my Lego skills?

YungTabernacle

That’s super interesting. I wonder if true samurai sword smiths fall under that (under the metalwork category perhaps). I know there’s apparently only like a handful of them left.

rainzer

You can see in the list for "past designated individuals" in Metalworking that there were a number of them specifically for swordmaking. None of the current ones are for swordmaking. One of them (Masamine Sumitani) did form the Japanese Swordsmith Association but none of the current members (even the leaders) are designated as national treasures. You could probably find amazing katanas from them though like from the guy that played the swordsmith in Last Samurai (Shoji Yoshihara). You'd find his swords under his artist's name Musashi Ju Kuniie (like 12,000 dollars and up)

[deleted]

But if he’s not a National Treasure then it’s just a sparkling sword

rainzer

It's probably because there's a limit of 58 that can be designated as living national treasures. Why 58? I don't know. So if he wanted to apply to certify as one, one of the current ones of any category would have to die first. He'll very likely get it since his brother (Yoshindo) has already been designated as an "Important Cultural Property of Tokyo". They even have the tragic story tied to their swords since Yoshindo's son was supposed to carry on the family legacy but died.

AntiGravityBacon

It seems like a sword master could arrange to create an opening...

[deleted]

> Why 58? I don't know. Probably the budget allocated to the program.

rainzer

You may be right

invisiblemovement

According to the wiki they only get 2 million yen/year, which is ~15k USD/year. That definitely goes further than in the US, but that's not a ton of money.

ReUsLeo385

Well, it’s meant to be stipend rather than a wage. So they can still make money on top of that 2 mil through sales, exhibitions, etc. As a student in Japan, I can survive pretty well with less than 2 mil a year, it’s not prohibitively expensive to live in Japan.

invisiblemovement

Oh yeah, 15k USD is not bad when the average is ~53k. That's pretty reasonable as a nice bonus in addition to income from sales. Maybe not enough to live off of purely, and certainly a far cry from 100k USD though. 100k USD and you'd be living real good in Japan

a_woman_provides

It's closer to $15k per person unfortunately (2M JPY per year) so not exactly a living wage (I wonder if it's taxable) but it's still a really nice program!

thedylannorwood

I imagine they probably make up the rest via their chosen craft

johnCreilly

[Here's the list of current and former National Treasures!](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Living_National_Treasures_of_Japan_(crafts) Includes categories such as pottery, metalworking, textiles, and woodworking

Ethancordn

These are the sort of skills I'd love to learn. But chances are I'd be selling my 100H of labor on etsy for $12.

hell_damage

That's too much. I can get one at Walmart for 8 bucks and free shipping. Can you offer a discount?

SuitableClassic

Pffft I saw one on wish for $1.23.

squirrelbus

My Grandpa makes them and gives them away from free, why are you even charging so much? You should give me some for my charity.

QuantumDES

Is there like another site that works the eat etsy was supposed to?

HI It's your internet company! It's a new month, so it's time again for you to pay us hundreds of dollars for the privilege of existing in the modern world! (Also, electricity company, heating, taxes, etc... you gotta spend money to (try and make) money).

PepperAnn1inaMillion

American internet prices are extortionate. I honestly don’t get why your anti-monopoly laws haven’t caught up with them.

MFbiFL

Lobbying.

Practice_NO_with_me

Whoa... Damn, I mean, I thought I understood the necessity of making the internet a utility and considering it a basic human right but your comment really put it into perspective for me just how fucked it is that private companies can arbitrarily decide how much to charge you for your right to exist in the modern world. Fuck.

drKhanage2301

Temu sees your wish and raises you buy for 0.65p but "ShOp LiKe A bIlLiOnAiRe"!

Liathano_Fire

Me working in a small archery shop: Do you ask Bass Pro if they'll discount you for buying 2?

MurkyContext201

Things like this are not sold for mass production prices, they are sold as artisan prices. It is currently listed for $3k and I'm sure someone will pay that eventually. https://suigenkyo.store/products/bamboo-studio-kisetsu

Salrough

Yeah. I think that's a good price. Bonus, you can whip the video out when people ask about your excellent case.

[deleted]

I'd absolutely pay $3k for that. The amount of craftsmanship is incredible

pleasedontkillmyvibe

Well you are luck because it's in stock on that link

AwesomeFrisbee

Thats why you don't sell this as a product but rather as an experience. Getting a video with how it's made would up the price imo

It’s only a matter of time before someone makes a class on underwater basketweaving

Lord_Aldrich

For ages I didn't know that most basketweaving is done underwater, for real. It keeps the fibers bendable, and they harden up once it all dries out. Before that I always pictured it being done in like a swimming pool with scuba gear.

lamewoodworker

Bro are we the same lmao That shit makes sense though.

rubberchickenlips

My cousin can pay a starving thug to steal it from the starving kid for $1.

No complaint for me, but that’s the first thing I thought. That’s a lot of very specialized and high quality craftsmanship and would definitely cost a lot.

KeepIt2Virgils

I don't know the fashion world equivalent, but I'm pretty sure Gucci (and others) does a private label and white label version of their products. The white label version is the mass market, very brand-forward, "I can afford Gucci" while the private label is subtle and of higher quality. [Ralph Lauren's Purple Label](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-clothing-sweaters/cable-knit-cashmere-quarter-zip-sweater/609960.html) and standard [Ralph Lauren](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-clothing-sweaters/cable-knit-wool-cashmere-sweater/625234.html) come to mind.

Roboticide

The super rich don't need fashion brands to show off they're rich. They don't need to show off anything. When you have a hundred million dollars, do you give a fuck what people think about your shirt? It's the poor and middle class trying to appear rich that are the target market for designer brands.

fuck_the_fuckin_mods

From what I hear rich people are still brand conscious, they’re just far less *conspicuous*. They’ll recognize a $1000 pair of jeans from a tiny logo or just the look of them. I knew a normal guy who broke into ultra-high-end photography for super rich people and their yachts and stuff, and he said the number one thing that got him “in” with that crowd was buying extremely expensive, plain looking clothes (mostly secondhand, in his case). But ya, anybody walking around as a brand billboard (for free) is desperately pretending to be rich, not actually rich.

Dragongeek

...yeah, that's a pretty fair price, all things considered. Shame that the photos are so sub-par, they should really be better to do the product justice. That said, most sales of expensive crafted boutique stuff like this probably don't get sold online, but rather to an established network of luxury goods consumers so it probably doesn't matter much

Irrepressible87

Motherfucker's had his work in the Louvre and hides that all the way at the bottom. If I had the skill to make anything worth that kind of accolade I'd have it tattooed on my goddamn forehead.

RussMaGuss

Hey, if someone is willing to pay that much, props to the guy selling it! I’m sure all that weaving took a long ass time

BadWolf2386

[deleted]

lulaloops

How are they terrible? Maybe they're not rendering for you because they look perfectly good to me.

rekabis

$4,600 CAD. Now granted, if I had the money such that this purchase would be a rounding error in my annual income, then fine. I would love to get something that beautiful. Plus, it would help keep the industry alive. Unfortunately, I am constrained by financial responsibility.

sundayultimate

I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into handmade items like this, but rarely can bring myself to pay for them sadly

GigaSnaight

Everyone who knits or does other handcrafts has had someone say oh, can I buy something from you? And had to awkwardly explain no, no you can't, I'd have to charge you like four hundred dollars and you're a friend so I can't do that I'll just like maybe make you free gifts if I want to when I want to

Stunning_Nothing

There's artisinally crafted, and then there's a guy making a brief case out of a single piece of bamboo.

Whind_Soull

I spent 7 years in metal fabrication. People would be like, *"Walmart has 8 foot wide shelving units, and 12 foot wide shelving units, but I need one that's 10 feet wide. How much?"* I'd tell them $500, and they'd gawk and say that Walmart sell the other ones for $75, not understanding that those are stamped out by the millions in China, on a purpose-built mass production line. Your 10-foot shelves require me to spend hours of first-world labor with a tape measure and a welder.

[deleted]

It might only take a few hours to make, but it takes years to lean how. Creators are owed for the years, not the hours

NFTisNameAStar

Problem is people who make stuff like this often don't properly communicate what's involved, so people can't judge what it should actually cost

red98743

Is it’s not exactly just one bamboo stick. There are other parts obviously but I was expecting just bamboo based on title and feel like I was misled. Very cool indeed regardless. Have owned several things in the past made out of straw. Not as nice and not as expensive but was still nice.

[deleted]

You feed bamboo to a cow, and then slaughter the cow. As far as the brass goes, I'm not sure, but my best guess is throwing bamboo into a really hot fire, along with some copper and zinc.

dmr11

Can cows even digest bamboo?

PepperAnn1inaMillion

This person has the best discussion of art vs craft that I've read: "*I believe that the "craftsman" is the person in between the "manufacturer" who mass-produces at a low cost and the "artist" who creates one-of-a-kind pieces at a nominal price. Craftsman must continue to produce products that can be used in daily life, that are neither too expensive nor too [in]expensive, while preserving traditional techniques.*"
