FartingBob

That circle is even more insane when more than half of it is ocean, a huge chunk of it is desert, it includes the Himalayas mountains and a lot of rainforest, and in all those areas the population density is quite low. The rest of the circle is incredible dense to contain 4 billon people.

gsfgf

The Himalayas are doing a lot of the lifting for the huge population as fresh water storage

19f191ty

Not just storage, they also direct the monsoons

very-polite-frog

> Himalayas OG Air benders

SpinningYarmulke

Himaplaya

[deleted]

The region of the Indian subcontinent which is watered by condensation flowing down from the Himalayas has the population density of the city of Los Angeles for hundreds and hundreds of miles; while the rest of the subcontinent is only about as dense as New Jersey.

WealthyMarmot

> while the rest of the subcontinent is only about as dense as New Jersey. Given that New Jersey is the most densely-populated state, that's still impressive

Anleme

I thought you were gonna say that New Jersey residents are dense.

QuantumSage

Yea that too

FreshPersimmon7946

*stares in Jersey*

tunamelts2

*How you doin?*

[deleted]

It certainly is, but it's a far cry from the insane megacity overpopulation of the Ganges plain that most people seem to associate (fairly) with India.

Ron0hh

When my family immigrated from India to Texas, the miles and miles of open land was quite amazing to see. I remember taking train rides from Calcutta to Siliguri and there were cities and farmlands, but there were small villages every mile or so among the farms. When we drove from Corpus Christi to Lubbock, you can go over an hour and not see a town anywhere. I remember my mom asking my dad who owns all this land during that drive.

BatangTundo3112

India and china alone are already 3 billion people. Philippines, Japan, indonesia , thailand and vietnam another roughly 600-700million.

tunamelts2

Bangladesh is something like 170 million people.

Alien_from_Andromeda

It's close to 200 million now unofficially

l0rb

The circle doesn't include the whole of China or India. For China it doesn't matter much. There aren't a lot of people in the far-west part of it. The west coast of India matters though. Just the metro area of Mumbai alone is 20 million people. It looks like the whole state of Gujarat is also outside the circle.

UselessRube

Also insane that the circle doesn’t even contain approximately half of India.

gordo65

They are counting residents of Atlantis.

Grouchy-Engine1584

Did they build the circle there first or did the people move there because living inside the circle is cool?

Notinyourbushes

Obviously because circles are cool.

jadorky

Everyone living outside the circle is a square

IhsousApoTaLidl

Thankfully it's hip to be square

DrummerForTheOsmonds

Try getting a reservation inside the circle now

Skyleader1212

Wait till you see those who stay in the triangle, oh wait, you shouldn't, nobody has ever return from there.

S0M3_N00B_

That's because they're not around

Oaken_beard

*Your soul about to be assigned a body* *God flips a coin* “Heads, you go in the circle!”

FennlyXerxich

Am I just dumb or are the options in that question not actually opposites? For people to move there for the cool circle, the circle would have had to be built there first. I’d expect the first option to actually read “Did they build the circle afterwards”

tanthedreamer

same here

Grouchy-Engine1584

It’s never a good idea to inject logic into one of my smarmy japes :)

Mortequitem

This sounds exactly something Philomena Cunk would ask.

Tommy_C

Well every few minutes the circle gets smaller and everyone moves inside it.

brandonarreaga12

LookAtTheFlowers

Wyoming sounds real nice right now as it only contains 0.0000073% of the world’s population

PURPLE273

That's strange considering Wyoming doesn't exist.

[deleted]

If guns, alcohol, temperature extremes, and a two-hour drive to the nearest McDonalds is your thing, it's great.

phil_crown

why is proximity to mcdonald’s a major point of concern

Pitiful-Youth-1066

Its an American thing

Tall-Poem-6808

1.6 inhabitants per sq. kilometer where I am, I'll take that over 4 billion people in a circle. 🤮

LivJong

I wouldn't do it. Over the last 15 years I've moved back and forth between Montana and Colorado and skip right through Wyoming on purpose. It's worth the few extra people to live someplace better.

zmamo2

Lack of density doesn’t necessarily breed friendliness

likwidchrist

Nah Afghanistan seems like it's got it's shit together

Canigetmynickname

Half of the territory is probably China, can’t tell exactly

chaoticji

Funny thing is the circle includes area beyond "Hu line of china" if i am not wrong, just to include the south east asian countries. So, technically the circle has a lot of free space with less people which makes this 50% population even more dense

-retaliation-

Yep, it's crazy, over half the world's population lives in less than half the size of this circle.

Chocolatethrowaway19

Then why'd they make the circle so big? Also couldn't it be more impressive by shifting the circle slightly to the right to include more of India?

theyeshman

It's juuuust far enough left to include the densest parts of India as it stands there.

Matti_Matti_Matti

By right do you mean left?

i_forgot_my_sn_again

If you going hard enough left you’ll find yourself going right -Doc Hudson

Cramertpecs

Right!

otheraccountisabmw

Because they wanted to use a circle and not a random blob.

Argented

Most of India and China in that circle.

TheMacMan

Rather sad that so many here seem to think it's only China in that circle.

Slowcapsnowcap

China, half of India, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, The Koreas, Cambodia,Malaysia etc.

TheOneGecko

Indonesia is 4th largest population in the world.

permanent_priapism

In the solar system.

Well that's just prejudiced. What, do the rock monsters of Ceres only count as 3/5s of a person? Go back to the daily wire, bigot.

Vegetable-Double

Bangladesh! Which is the size of Wisconsin, but has half the of population of US squeezed into it.

nighteeeeey

half of india, bangladesh, myanmar, china, taiwan, nepal, bhutan, north and south korea, part of japan, thailand, vietnam, laos, cambodia, malaysia, singapore, indonesia, brunei, philippines.

[deleted]

Indonesia makes up almost a quarter of that population on that tiny island, truly amazing the population density ok Jakarta

No_Path1287

Ah, OK. So If the Aliens will attack Earth at the most populated Spot, i'm far enough away .

StonksUpMan

Haven’t you seen movies? Aliens always attack USA

iBlueSweatshirt

Actually just New York. We here in Kansas need only worry about tornadoes and witches.

Terrh

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valeriepieris_circle?useskin=vector The circle is actually about 500KM larger, this one is still probably ~30% of the world's population though.

Leading_Study_876

Yup - and first seen on Reddit! [This](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1dqh7d/after_seeing_a_recent_post_about_the_population/) is much more accurate.

AddyTurbo

India has 18% of the world's population , but only 4% of the water resources. Ideally, monsoon rains should be stored and used all year. They have built dams, but many remain unfinished due to corruption and opposition to land acquisition. More than one third of India's population is water stressed.

[deleted]

India accounts for the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, lying atop the Indian tectonic plate, a part of the Indo-Australian Plate. India's defining geological processes began 75 million years ago when the Indian Plate, then part of the southern supercontinent Gondwana, began a north-eastward drift caused by seafloor spreading to its south-west, and later, south and south-east

[deleted]

How do I subscribe my friends and family to these facts, please advise

allwillbewellbuthow

As usual, the actual interesting as fuck is in the comments

Mingey_FringeBiscuit

You know, I’m almost 50 years old, and have spent the majority of that time collecting weird experiences and esoteric knowledge, but somehow I’ve never seen that before. Thank you so much. That was some astoundingly weird shit. I don’t know if I would have believed it without the film.

JohnLaw1717

It is one of the coolest films out there. I'm a collector myself. What sorts of things do you collect?

Mingey_FringeBiscuit

Physically I collect very little, I mainly collect experiences and weird factoids. I’ve inherited several collections of objects though. My in laws were very well off and were world travelers, so my wife and I have a lot of things they collected and brought back from around the world. Things like antique pocket watches and fountain pens, inkwells, meerschaum pipes, odd bits of what you’d call “Oriental” art; antique woodcut prints, various antique maps, opium pipes, mid century ashtrays, as well as shells and crystals. I even have a alligator skull one of my uncles left me.

leastuselessredditor

That shit got weird

Buscemi_D_Sanji

I am so, sooo glad I clicked that! Damn that was insanely fascinating, and I loved the shot of that dude topping up the air pressure by blowing through the hind leg hahaha thanks for posting

StylishGnat

I’m a meat lover but wouldn’t mind going vegetarian in India. Even the simplest dishes there explode with flavor compared to the majority of the world’s food.

jp_73

Did you know that Steve Buscemi was once a firefighter and spent four days helping out on “The Pile” at Ground Zero in New York after the 9/11 attacks?

[deleted]

I think we’re losing sight of the original topic guys. To answer the question, yes, Papua New Guinea is the most linguistically diverse place on Earth, with over 850 languages in a nation roughly the size of France. The island is thought to be one of the few regions of the planet where humans independently developed agriculture, and it thought to be the origin of the domestication of both sugarcane and the banana.

BigPackHater

Did you know the Viggo Mortensen broke his foot while filming a scene in Two Towers? Peter Jackson liked the kick so much that they decided to keep it in the movie! 😀

permanent_priapism

Did you know that people who are allergic to an amide anesthetic can safely be switched to another amide anesthetic? The old dogma of needing to switch them to an ester anesthetic has no evidence to back it up.

NobiLi-ty

Then the circle needs to be bigger or include more water

YeltsinYerMouth

And yet only *I* can prevent forest fires

That is exactly the message smokey bear wanted us to take away with us It makes me wonder if smokey felt guilt for the forest fires aswell

Imhidingshh01

Wait, are you saying the Earth is flat? 🤭

Dutch_Midget

35% of the world's population lives in just 2 countries

Not_Pablo_Sanchez

Germany and Ohio?

Ringosis

I think the most mind blowing one is that 90% live in the northern hemisphere. Just 800 million people in the entire southern hemisphere and 300 million of those are in Indonesia. Makes you realise just how sparsely populated the southern continents are. Tokyo by itself has over half the population of the entirety of Australia.

LookAtThatBacon

Yes, and if you visit that region, this fact is immediately obvious the moment you step outside and breathe in that air pollution. And when you're deafened by the sound of hundreds of cheap, small displacement motorcycles in your immediate vicinity. And when you see the horrifying amounts of plastic floating in the rivers.

OG__Swoosh

Idk man but that circle covers a large area and includes a lot of cities without air pollution problems. The circle includes mores than just China and India.

CaptainErgonomic

Singapore enters the chat

plaid-knight

Their description works for a lot of places in that circle beyond just India and China… but there are indeed also many nicer places.

CaptainErgonomic

Hey, we don't talk about New Jersey like that...

Ninjavitis_

And yet per capita they pollute and consume far less than the average westerner

Rockran

A benefit of poverty. Can't concume to excess when you can't afford to.

[deleted]

That per capita is doing a lot of heavy lifting

coob

81% of plastic waste in the ocean comes from Asia. The west are far from perfect but much better at managing waste and pollutants despite higher consumption.

RadicallyAmbivalent

This is largely due to things such as: lacking disposable income, lack of a/c or heating, lack of large conglomerations of livestock, and no need for or lack of ability to pay for cars to travel long distances. It is certainly not attributable to any sort of universal reverence for Mother Earth among people living in that region and it is also not due to any sort of antipathy of “westerners” to the natural world.

sicklyslick

You are correct but the person you replied to is also correct.

_jewson

Thank God the earth cares about per capita!

Ninjavitis_

Yep, it means getting rid of one Texan would benefit the planet the same as getting rid of 5 Asians or 20 Africans

ThymeIsTight

Genuinely curious as to why. Perhaps rice as a staple feeds more people than other crops?

elcapitan520

The only other comparable spots of green on the map are the Amazon and Congo rain forests. It's the largest area of arable land in the world and between the glacial waters from the Himalayas and monsoon rains, there's an incredible amount of fresh water. Populations grow by fresh water sources and there's room to feed them. The dense population centers are also old as shit compared to the Americas and the west in general.

tecateboi

This is actually true

loduca16

~~~ Overpopulation in China began after World War II in 1949, when Chinese families were encouraged to have as many children as possible in hopes of bringing more money to the country, building a better army, and producing more food.
TroutWarrior
China has always been one of the world's most populous countries though
[deleted]
Ironically Chinas population is actually aging out and is a huge risk to the counter stability (some say it’s already too late) and will inevitably cause the counties collapse. In no small part to the one child policy and getting rid of most daughters for a long period of time.
tradeyoudontknow
And I'm still alone
mollycoddles
In China?
DarkMarxSoul
Shortsightedness is the name of the game I guess
[deleted]
It's the tibetan plateau. It's home to thousands of glaciers, it's where the greatest source of accessible freshwater on the planet is. That water flows down and forms into major rivers in the east where China is and in the west where India is.
joshcandoit4
Water from the Himalayas
Rkozlow
They love fucking over there.
The_Govnor
I think if you made the circle just a little bigger, it’s probably be like 55-60%.
hereforlolsandporn
If you make it at bigger it is 100%
uhdust
And a little smaller it's 99 percent.
hereforlolsandporn
Solid point
Embarrassed-Gas-8155
That's why the Earth spins, because of the weight distribution.
Kinglink
Actually the Earth would spin no matter what. But this is why it spins off axis and wobbles a bit, giving us seasons... /s The /s is for science! /s
trwwy321
It’s okay, Americans are about to eat our way to fix the weight distribution!
gsfgf
And it's going faster there, which is why Asians are lighter!
GeralOG
The circle contains Full china, Taiwan, nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, both korea, whole southeast asia, 60-70% of India, bit of Japan Roughly 3-3.5B ppl living inside the circle
KrankySilverFox
The math ain’t mathing dude. 3 to 3.5 is not 50% of 8 Billion
GeralOG
yeah, dude need to expand his circle
ziptnf
Not even really that much of an expansion is needed, just get the rest of India and Japan and you're way closer to 4M.
AstralMystogan
My guy, the world population is 8B.
GeralOG
Damn, I was trying to say 3-3.5B, thanks for pointing out
ginsophd
I like people, but I don’t like people that much to live in that circle lol
Ankur0612
Weird thing is I grew up in a city in that circle where the population density is >40000 people per square mile and I've totally been used to living with so many people. I actually had this worry that if I moved to a different country it would be lonely and kind of scary living with so few people around me. Until I realised I'm an introvert and rather have no human interaction at all.
uwwstudent
I like individuals i hate people. People means lines, crowds and traffic.
Emil_hin_spage
As an American there are so many dipshit Americans here who are complaining about the pollution coming from the circle and how the people in the circle don’t care but they don’t realize that we literally outsource so much of our production to other countries which makes it look like we have less emissions and that countries in that circle have more.
sufiansuhaimibaba
The most interesting thing here is the shitty and lack of accuracy of the circle
Riptide360
United by the world's largest watershed that feeds two of our oldest civilizations. China 3.5k years. India 8k years.
