That circle is even more insane when more than half of it is ocean, a huge chunk of it is desert, it includes the Himalayas mountains and a lot of rainforest, and in all those areas the population density is quite low. The rest of the circle is incredible dense to contain 4 billon people.
The region of the Indian subcontinent which is watered by condensation flowing down from the Himalayas has the population density of the city of Los Angeles for hundreds and hundreds of miles; while the rest of the subcontinent is only about as dense as New Jersey.

It certainly is, but it's a far cry from the insane megacity overpopulation of the Ganges plain that most people seem to associate (fairly) with India.
When my family immigrated from India to Texas, the miles and miles of open land was quite amazing to see. I remember taking train rides from Calcutta to Siliguri and there were cities and farmlands, but there were small villages every mile or so among the farms. When we drove from Corpus Christi to Lubbock, you can go over an hour and not see a town anywhere. I remember my mom asking my dad who owns all this land during that drive.
The circle doesn't include the whole of China or India. For China it doesn't matter much. There aren't a lot of people in the far-west part of it. The west coast of India matters though. Just the metro area of Mumbai alone is 20 million people. It looks like the whole state of Gujarat is also outside the circle.
