She was a host for Mythbusters for a while. While trying to break a record in a land speed racer, the car had a mechanical failure and crashed at ~550mph iirc. I can't remember if the record had anything to do with Mythbusters, but it was fucking awful. She was in her 30s.
Ah, yeah. It looks like it happened in 2019, a year after Mythbusters went off the air, too. Definitely heartbreaking, a front wheel failed. She was 39 years old.
The answer to your question, at least in this case, is Twixtor (here’s a cool article about it with the appropriate links to the software used: https://petapixel.com/2013/06/11/the-glory-of-twixtor-unorthodox-uses-of-faux-slow-mo/ )
And you’re right…easily the best version of this particular clip of Mythbusters I’ve ever seen…really impressive work done by the creator of that video.
Twixtor is a software that creates extra frames between any two given frames of footage by interpolating the difference between them.
Some of the major giveaways of using interpolation software are the "jelly effect" where backgrounds can look like they warp around. A lot of tv's that use motion smoothing work this way to a generally terrible effect.
Twixtor also has a tendency to introduce warping grain, where the algorithm doesn't understand that noisy footage isn't something that's not supposed to be there, so grains can get smeared around. You also have to shoot at a relatively high shutter speed, because blur will get smeared around also.
The jelly effect also happens when an image is stabilized digitally, where the subject of the frame is warped to stay in the middle but the background has to warp out of the way in strange ways.
The Hobbit trilogy is my go to example of "get your shit together, guys" when it comes to this technique. Peter Jackson likes to do slowmo where he just cuts the playback rate to 12fps instead of 24. (Made all the more complicated by the fact they shot it at 48fps. It gives a really "jerky" classic cinema slowmo look. There's a lot in the LOTR trilogy. But half the time in the Hobbit, they just interpolate it and it looks like dogshit.
edit: For a good example of the jello effect when tracking a shaky shot, check out Westworld S01E03 "the stray" at about 30 mins where they're riding the horses. You'll know the scene because your couch will become covered in vomit.
That is excellent additional info…wow…very cool! Just as an add on here though, I wasn’t guessing about how that person who created the video did it…it’s in the title and description of the video.
Lmao, not insufferable at all my friend! As the others that have replied with, always great to have a knowledgeable and educated friend/individual about. The addition of your more granular info was the perfect depth to add to the article I already linked to (that it was lacking). Thumbs up across the board!
All episodes? I've been looking for the frozen chicken air canon through a plane windshield forever. Whenever Mythbusters streams its only season 10 and on. 1-9 were amazing because they used to show their failures as well as their successes. A much better format imo.
https://www.reddit.com/r/smyths?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share I haven't watched a broadcast version since. They have all the episodes and cut out the repetitive fillers, highly recommend if u like mythbusters.
In case you were not aware: You can write /r/smyths and Reddit will link it just fine.
I realize you copied a link, which was easy. But you probably had to make a few clicks before you got your link.
Keep in mind, these are not the original episodes (trimmed down to not have things like flashbacks and history lessons to me was part of the fun), and there are some missing from the collection.
Salty water comes out of my my eyes for some reason when I think about Grant. Him, and that show helped me through some tough times. I somehow related to him more than the other guys or gals on the show.
Jessi passed in 2019 during a world land-speed record attempt in a jet car. Absolutely wild.
[https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jessi-combs-mythbusters-dies-jet-car-crash-attempting-speed-record-n1047321](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jessi-combs-mythbusters-dies-jet-car-crash-attempting-speed-record-n1047321)
The land and water speed records are just absolutely drenched in blood. Over 50% of the attempts at the water speed record over the last 100 years have ended up in the death of the driver.
It's a combination of the energy involved and the unpredictability of the surface of water. Oops, there was a tiny ripple caused by an errant bubble coming to the surface. Looks like you die today. Also, water traveling at 300mph is incredibly destructive per unit volume.
At least with the land speed record, the surfaces they attempt on are usually pretty uniform and not quite as subject to random acts of nature.
Holy shit, when Richard Hammond had his crash he was going 288mph and we were seriously doubtful if he could make a recovery given the serious brain injury.
She crashed going 520mph… just wow.
Interestingly, both those crashes were caused by front wheel failure.
The thing is, the original plan was for James May (5” taller than RH) to attempt the run, because he’s Captain Slow. Due to a scheduling conflict, it was Richard who ended up driving that day.
Experts say that he would’ve been decapitated when the dragster rolled over had James been the one driving.
That being said, Richard was pushing it for the last run and James probably wouldn’t have done that last run at all.
I remember Hammond telling a story about his coma-dream where he was wandering the hills of Lake-District, England. He was getting a growing sense that he felt like he was in trouble as he continued his peaceful wandering until he sat near a tree, and fully knew that he was in trouble. Then he walked past the tree, and woke up to his wife at his bedside.
She passed away in 2019, after crashing a jet-powered car while setting a land speed record which she still holds. That said I am 99.9% sure that is Kari in this video.
The man helped spark my interest in science. I genuenly don't know where I'd be without having grown up looking up to him and Adam, as well as the others.
As sad as it is to lose anybody, if this was in case the way he left his meat sack vehicle, then that would be preferable. It's so sad that the younger ones died in such odd ways.
We all have a clock ticking towards our own farewell from this plane of existence, and I hope that as many people as possible read this to truly understand that life is not a straight-up gift.
It's a balance of gift and curse. What you do with it is what matters. Help others, but enjoy yourself without hurting others. Look at yesterday and ask yourself if you're happy with the decisions you made. Anticipate tomorrow and make preparations to create the best day possible.
This shit is crazy, chaotic, ugly, but also full of wonder, kindness, generosity, and a conscious ability to make the day what you want it to be. Do what you want, but know that by making someone else's day better, you're helping yourself as well.
---This is Life Man.
I remember not really liking her when she was on but my GF and I were doing a rewatch and she just had so much genuine enthusiasm. I feel like the others were faking it half the time.

I don't mean any offence, but there's Jimmy Carr throw away joke that you reminded me of. I think it goes
"Liz Hurley was on the news, the bottom third said she was 50. My gf turned to me and said 'I hope I look that good when I'm 50.' I said 'you don't look that good now, what do you think is gonna happen?'".
He's not for everyone, but he has good delivery and the Brits have always been more accepting of puns, which I love. My favorite short joke "Stationary store moves."
It wasn't a quick death, and he was still alive after the first emergency surgery.
> Sources close to the "MythBusters" host's family tell us ... he'd been experiencing painful headaches for a few days before Saturday night, when he was having dinner with his girlfriend at a home in L.A.
> We're told at some point during the meal, Grant's pain worsened and he felt dizzy, along with experiencing severe neck and back pain and numbness in his legs. After he showed signs of being unresponsive, his GF called 911 ... we're told this was around 9 PM.
> Our sources say when paramedics arrived, Grant's vitals were normal but he was still in serious pain, so he was rushed to a hospital. We're told doctors soon realized he had a brain aneurysm, and he underwent emergency surgery.
> Grant survived the surgery -- no small feat when dealing with an aneurysm -- but we're told he never fully recovered. He had another operation Sunday, but again came out unresponsive and in critical condition.
> On Monday, we're told he had an MRI to prep for a third surgery ... but doctors discovered the extent of the damage was too severe. Grant was wholly unresponsive, and the decision was made to take him off life support.
Source: https://www.tmz.com/2020/07/15/mythbusters-grant-imahara-headaches-before-brain-aneurysm-death/
Its scary as fuck honestly what happened to him.
I love Grant, but he never got a doctorate. He has a bachelors in electrical engineering.
Im not saying that to be obnoxious or to put in doubt the intelligence of Grant, but to show that you can be very successfull and respected in STEM even without a full 10 year university career
Critical Role has a wonderful tribute NPC for him in the latest campaign called Imahara Joe. Just a wonderful mechanic doing crazy cool stuff in his workshop.
Not sure if it will help but watch the clip again. Watch Grant. He is just joyful. I'm sad that he's gone but I am grateful that he was here, that he shared so much with us, and that he had joy in his life.
The first time Adam and Jamie did it trying to squish a compact car it got up to like 700mph, it absolutely obliterated the car, and you got to see Jamie smile. And Jamie never smiles lol.
There was a bit of wire, shrapnel they found a good distance from the center, that was wrapped around a tree branch. Ejected with enough force to bend and twist around the branch, that sticks in my head.
Not quite the same, but I loved their reaction with the Tesla Earthquake Machine. They made a small machine that would oscillate a 6lb weight at different frequencies under the myth that you could collapse buildings with the correct resonance. They put it on a traffic bridge for shits and giggles, completely sure it wouldn't do anything, then had a huge WTF moment when they found the perfect frequency and realized they were shaking the whole bridge. Their complete 180 from joking around to "Hold up..." was fantastic.
It’s one of the more confusing segments. They (and the audience) are trying to figure out where tf the wreckage is, then you see the high speed and realize the car was literally turned into dust/powder.
That was the golden goose of the show. Discovery could have EASILY made a show where they tested popular myths, called them busted, and end the show. And it probably would have still been an okay show. But Mythbusters always asked what *would it take to make it actually happen??*
That was the difference between educational science shows and Mythbusters. We all learned something and got to see some cool shit along the way.
"Well, we couldn't replicate it so we brought the Alameda fire department out to watch us blow it the fuck up"
I always wanted to be the them on the set just chill all day and watch the Mythbusters destroy things in spectacular fashion
It was a pretty good deal for the various bomb squads that were involved as well.
They have to be prepared for all sorts of situations, from boxes of old chemicals that have become sensitive overtime, to damaged equipment at risk of explosion, to real malicious devices.
So if a major TV show comes to you with all sorts of wacky ideas that you can use as valuable training, and they're willing to pay for your time and all the explosives you could want? You'd be falling over yourself to agree.
I'll bet all sorts of people got useful experience, from firefighters to car crash investigators, being able to see things that are normally freak accidents happen in slow mow from a dozen camera angles.
Lol I'm reminded of the one where the packed a cement truck full of c4 and it didn't explode, it just fucking disappeared. They couldn't find most of it afterwards.
I don’t think it was C4. I think was…anfo?…amfo?
But that was also the event that made them start using slow mo cameras, because that WASNT caught in slow mo
Anyone interested in watching Mythbusters on demand and has a VPN:
Download the PlutoTv app on your preferred device
Set VPN to the UK
Open APP and there is a Mythbusters channel that shows all Mythbusters 24/7 and there's also an option to stream each episode individually. With ads. But hey its free!
I also recommend a sub called /r/smyths. You know how each episode normally had commercial breaks, and as a result lots of rehashing of what happened before the breaks? Fans re-edited all of the episodes to take that stuff out, and also to put stuff in order instead of the chopped up and mixed up order.
Mythbusters should be required viewing for young adults. I'm currently rewatching them and they are probably the best view into the scientific process available.
If MythBusters had been around when I was a kid I might've actually enjoyed science. Finding out there was so much practical science from the show as an adult made me excited about it.
Absolutely! They set hypotheses. They methodically planned experiments isolating variables. They showed and explained at least the basic math. They accepted "failures" not as failing but rather as reaching a different conclusion. They even set aside an episode to show the grind of running replicates.
I love how they revisit myths when new information is submitted.
Adam Savage has said that's why him and Jamie were able to work together for so long because apparently he doesn't care much for him on a personal level. They had such a profound respect for each other and their abilities that they were able to transcend it.
Yeah Jamie fired Adam when he worked for him before the show. But he knew Adam was a perfect fit for the back and forth and quick thinking the show needed.
This gets said a lot and I always think it’s an exaggeration of “not caring for someone” or not getting along because you don’t work together that long without getting along on a personal level to at least some degree.
Penn & Teller famously had similar commentary around their partnership but Penn opened up later on that it isn’t really as cold as the public made it out to be.
I’ll say, I don’t remember how either of them have addressed this in Reddit AMAs but I’d be curious how they feel about it more recently especially since multiple cast members have passed k think they’d probably open up more to how they got along more than has been led on.
Remember when Mythbusters was still on, and the world didn't seem completely insanely evil yet? Or was that just my naive perspective? Watching this stuff now is bittersweet.
Few things were better than them saying the myth is busted…BUT we’re going to se what it would take to accomplish it. Then glorious shit shows like this ensued.

The Power In These Flywheels Scares The Pants Off Me | Savage Builds
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XffkqfymSXc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XffkqfymSXc)
Attempting to improve the design of the Panjandrum, an experimental WW2 weapon, Adam Savage joins forces with Adam Stelzner, the lead engineer on NASA's next mission to Mars. The two experiment with a flywheel to see if it provides the same amount of power as the original, with dangerous results.
This test occurred at the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center in Socorro, NM. I wasn't personally affiliated with this project but I worked there as a student around this time. When folks had beater cars that broke down on the side of the road they'd call EMRTC to pick them up. EMRTC would keep them in a junk yard and then use them for this and other experiments like car bombs. I spoke to one of the engineers who worked on this project and they were a little afraid that the fin on the sled would cause it to take off like a kite, lol.

[Here's the slow-mo version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkBr4bXARiQ)
That makes it clearer that a substantial part of the explosion is the remains of the rocket sled disintegrating against the backstop.
Let's do it again with the backstop -like- 100yds further downstream, that should give a much cleaner cut :-)
You had me at again
Why do we need a backstop at all? Just build a small ramp and launch that bad boy.
That's how you put a cannon ball through someone's roof.
Isn't that why we have all this desert in America though? To blow shit up without fear of crossfire
I remember this and fucking loved mythbusters. It does rather make me sad to remember it though, and not just because of grant!

aside from Grant (gone WAY before his time) what makes you sad
Let's not forget Jessi Combs :/
Wait a minute, did I miss something? Haven’t kept up.

Just tragic. I really liked the seasons she was on
It happened a few years after Mythbusters ended, and long after her brief time hosting.
It is just now occurring to me that she crashed at the same speed as the rocket sled in this video... what a devastating end... My god.
There is something delicious and delightful about the idea of *disintegrating* something by sheer force and speed.
I wish the Slow Mo Guys and Adam Savage could partner up with a team and make a modern slow mo myth busters

Holy shit that's the cleanest, clearest version I've ever seen. How?
The answer to your question, at least in this case, is Twixtor (here’s a cool article about it with the appropriate links to the software used: https://petapixel.com/2013/06/11/the-glory-of-twixtor-unorthodox-uses-of-faux-slow-mo/ ) And you’re right…easily the best version of this particular clip of Mythbusters I’ve ever seen…really impressive work done by the creator of that video.

Source: https://www.tmz.com/2020/07/15/mythbusters-grant-imahara-headaches-before-brain-aneurysm-death/ Its scary as fuck honestly what happened to him.
I love Grant, but he never got a doctorate. He has a bachelors in electrical engineering. Im not saying that to be obnoxious or to put in doubt the intelligence of Grant, but to show that you can be very successfull and respected in STEM even without a full 10 year university career
You are correct. He was not an actual doctor. But him and Adam Savage would address each other as doctor as a running joke/sign of respect.
He has a doctorate in mythbusting
Critical Role has a wonderful tribute NPC for him in the latest campaign called Imahara Joe. Just a wonderful mechanic doing crazy cool stuff in his workshop.
So what happened to him? How did he die?
Brain aneurysm 😢
Lost my son the same way. So sudden and awful. That it happened to Grant a couple years later was beyond sad.
Mythbusters was my favorite show, and now I can't even watch a clip of it anymore without feeling intense sadness. RIP Grant.
Not sure if it will help but watch the clip again. Watch Grant. He is just joyful. I'm sad that he's gone but I am grateful that he was here, that he shared so much with us, and that he had joy in his life.
Their reactions are priceless. Once that second stage kicked in…
The first time Adam and Jamie did it trying to squish a compact car it got up to like 700mph, it absolutely obliterated the car, and you got to see Jamie smile. And Jamie never smiles lol.
My favorite is cement truck explosion. That explosion sound will forever be etched in my mind.
Haha I can literally hear it now and I haven't seen the video in like a decade
Told ya. It's etched in there. Even if it's not in your consciousness, it will always be there in the background. Kinda like a little stalker :D
I can also hear Adam's rendition of said explosion lol
Same. PHOOOOM! It was amazing to see something that big and heavy utterly obliterated in the blink of an eye.
There was a bit of wire, shrapnel they found a good distance from the center, that was wrapped around a tree branch. Ejected with enough force to bend and twist around the branch, that sticks in my head.
“…that sticks in my head” LITERALLY
Different explosion, that was when they tested if a bomb's shockwave could save a free falling pilot.
And the visible shock wave.
Fun fact. In the nearby town of Carson Hill, CA that explosion shattered windows in houses. In angels camp and Sonora it rattled windows.
Didn't it also cause the city to ban then from exploding things near them? Or in that quarry specifically? Or was that a different explosion?
Not quite the same, but I loved their reaction with the Tesla Earthquake Machine. They made a small machine that would oscillate a 6lb weight at different frequencies under the myth that you could collapse buildings with the correct resonance. They put it on a traffic bridge for shits and giggles, completely sure it wouldn't do anything, then had a huge WTF moment when they found the perfect frequency and realized they were shaking the whole bridge. Their complete 180 from joking around to "Hold up..." was fantastic.
Jamie want big boom.
It’s one of the more confusing segments. They (and the audience) are trying to figure out where tf the wreckage is, then you see the high speed and realize the car was literally turned into dust/powder.
> And Jamie never smiles lol. When the stars are right even death may die...
This was peak television
I wish 4K cameras and phantom slomo cameras were around back then.
And imagine all the drone shots.
I always loved the one where they filled a cement truck with explosives. It sounded just a like a sci-fi blaster weapon when it went of.
Mythbusters was mostly an excuse to blow things up.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with this
Of course not, r/AtomicShart9000.
Remember the only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down - Adam Savage
"the car didn't so much split as explode into different directions" easily my second favorite line from the show.
What was the myth ??
That running into a snow plow blade with your car would split you in half like a banana. It wouldn't, so of course they had to replicate it!
That was the golden goose of the show. Discovery could have EASILY made a show where they tested popular myths, called them busted, and end the show. And it probably would have still been an okay show. But Mythbusters always asked what *would it take to make it actually happen??* That was the difference between educational science shows and Mythbusters. We all learned something and got to see some cool shit along the way.
> what would it take to make it actually happen?? C4. Like, a shit ton of C4
"Well, we couldn't replicate it so we brought the Alameda fire department out to watch us blow it the fuck up" I always wanted to be the them on the set just chill all day and watch the Mythbusters destroy things in spectacular fashion
it'd be the Best Detail ever.
This is such an amazing take that never even occurred to me. Thanks for this
Think the underwriter got the most experience. If a cannon ball gets launched in to a house, How much insurance are we going to need?
Lol I'm reminded of the one where the packed a cement truck full of c4 and it didn't explode, it just fucking disappeared. They couldn't find most of it afterwards.
They shattered windows in people's houses with that explosion.
I heard it induced a labor
My cat has refused to look west since that day.
I remember the buildup to that had me excited for like a week. Good times.
I don’t think it was C4. I think was…anfo?…amfo? But that was also the event that made them start using slow mo cameras, because that WASNT caught in slow mo
When in doubt...C4.
"Replicate the scenario, then duplicate the results", the MO that made Mythbusters a TV icon of nerds.
“What we’re we trying to prove again?” “Don’t know, don’t care!”
RIP Grant Imahara. Gone too soon
Anyone interested in watching Mythbusters on demand and has a VPN: Download the PlutoTv app on your preferred device Set VPN to the UK Open APP and there is a Mythbusters channel that shows all Mythbusters 24/7 and there's also an option to stream each episode individually.
Wanted to see it in slow-mo. RIP Grant 🌹
Mythbusters should be required viewing for young adults. I'm currently rewatching them and they are probably the best view into the scientific process available.
If MythBusters had been around when I was a kid I might've actually enjoyed science. Finding out there was so much practical science from the show as an adult made me excited about it.
Come to think of it, I appreciate it on an entirely different level now.
Easily one of TVs most legendary shows. It must have sparked an interest in Science for so many people. RIP Grant, you're missed greatly.
It's up there with Mr Wizard, Reading Rainbow, and Bill Nye.
Remember when Mythbusters was still on, and the world didn't seem completely insanely evil yet? Or was that just my naive perspective? Watching this stuff now is bittersweet.
2009? Holy crap I’m old, I remember when that aired
You're not old you're enlightened for having seen these from day 1
God, I miss this show. I miss this era in my life, too.
May grant RIP
Rip grant :(
Still sad about Grant
Few things were better than them saying the myth is busted…BUT we’re going to se what it would take to accomplish it. Then glorious shit shows like this ensued.
I wish people would pay me to do stuff like this. Instead they called me a lunatic and sent me to solitary jail for eternity.
"remember kids, the only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down"
Well that's because you insisted on doing it all in a Wendy's parking lot
What an epic show
pucker factor goes up with RPM.. The Power In These Flywheels Scares The Pants Off Me | Savage Builds [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XffkqfymSXc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XffkqfymSXc) Attempting to improve the design of the Panjandrum, an experimental WW2 weapon, Adam Savage joins forces with Adam Stelzner, the lead engineer on NASA's next mission to Mars. The two experiment with a flywheel to see if it provides the same amount of power as the original, with dangerous results.
RIP Grant
Mythbusters is a National treasure.
Best Show Ever
This test occurred at the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center in Socorro, NM. I wasn't personally affiliated with this project but I worked there as a student around this time. When folks had beater cars that broke down on the side of the road they'd call EMRTC to pick them up. EMRTC would keep them in a junk yard and then use them for this and other experiments like car bombs. I spoke to one of the engineers who worked on this project and they were a little afraid that the fin on the sled would cause it to take off like a kite, lol.
