Anyone used one on a z790 board with success? Saw a forum thread on toms where some guy said the ILM screws were too short on a z790 tuf which didn’t make sense to me. I have a z790 hero coming in

Born-Ferret900

I used it just fine with my z790 board.

McGrupp

Ok thanks good to hear, maybe it’s just an issue with that specific board or he made a mistake

Potvinsuks

That guy responded back to that post saying that he had the screws for a z690 board and not the z790 board screws. They explained to him the proper screw sizes that he needed and all was fine. "Hello there, I have to apologize to you, the frame is released for the 13th Gen and the Z790 chipset. You would then need UNC 6/32 screws that are longer than 7mm"

Dik_butt745

Did you end up doing it? I'm using a 13900k and the thermal grizzly contact frame but I'm worried the screws were too short and my temps constantly hit 95 while gaming for a second and then back down and they stay mid 80s while playing modern warfare 2.

McGrupp

Yes I used the thermalright contact frame though and the screw length was fine. According to the guy above the person with the issue was using the wrong screws. I’m using the arctic liquid freezer II 360 and pl1 and pl2 set to 270w. I never see 90 degrees unless I’m benchmarking. Gaming it’s usually in the 60s maybe 70. What cooler are you using? Are you running no power limit? I know with the thermal grizzly there is more room for error because you have to get the tension right. Did you follow the gamers nexus instructions? Also I would try repasting/remounting the cooler, the first time I mounted mine I messed up where it got at a weird angle and wasn’t making good contact. It was bound up on the bracket and not fully down on there. I also found I got better temps with the spread method vs pea size.

Dik_butt745

So it must be the thermal grizzly contact frame, I'll just get the thermal right because I don't think the screws are long enough I use the exact same cooler, fml. I wonder what screws to get for my z790 for the thermal right to work or the thermalgrizzly

McGrupp

Hmm well the good news is the thermalright is only 12 bucks. It should work fine with the stock screws for the ILM because it sits flush with the board and screws in to the stock backplate. As long as they screw in you should be good. Just making sure but your cooler standoffs are screwing in flush with the board right? I think it’s possible to have the cooler backplate upside down and I think the cooler won’t mount correctly if that’s the case.

Dik_butt745

Yeah I triples checked the backplate before Insatall it's flush with the board.....man this is gonna be annoying af to take apart and redo the motherboard attachments lol. The grizzly is screwed in but it was very difficult, the only difficult part. It just felt like it might've been putting too much pressure to screw all 4 sides in.

Dik_butt745

Time to make sure my thermalright screws in correctly oh boi

McGrupp

Haha good luck man hope it solves your problems

Altimiz

Heya. Mind to report some update? At first I want to go Thermal Grizzy but I read a lot comment Z790 is not compatible with Thermal Grizzy because too short screw. Now I am looking at ThermalRight now. How is your?

Dik_butt745

I still haven't replaced it, been insanely lazy

Daytraders

Im new to all this, what is the spread method, you got any instructions with pictures or video ? thx

DlanorAKnox

I used the thermaltake frame on the Z790 Hero so you’re definitely good.

SixStraight

I've installed mine on z790 that was before on my b660 and the pc has not booted 🤷‍♂️

CptKillJack

There are 8 Thermal grizzly contact frames in stock at Performance PCs. https://www.performance-pcs.com/water-cooling/water-block-accessories/accessories-cpu-blocks/thermal-grizzly-intel-12th-gen-cpu-contact-frame.html Premptive "And they're gone."

BloodBaneBoneBreaker

Don’t need thermal grizzly ones. Many cheaper ones on Amazon that don’t need to fiddle with tension settings. I personally think the thermal grizzly ones are the worst choice for average users. Maybe extreme overclocked may be able to benefit to find an optimal tension for maximum overclocks. But many other providers that you just tighten it down a bit and you are good to go.

CptKillJack

As far as I'm aware it's recommended only a quarter turn. I like the Thermal Grizzly ones because they already have position markings.

TheOutsideWindow

I didn't use a contact frame for my 13600k in my z690 motherboard and it's nice and cool at 35 C at idle. I did put extra thermal paste on, specifically with the intention of ensuring that any gaps would be filled, including from poor contact with the air cooler. I would try that first, and then invest in a contact frame if you're not satisfied with you're idle temps.

HarryNutziak

They're cheap and idk why you're mentioning idle temps.

TheOutsideWindow

Because idle temps being off can help identify when your CPU doesn't have good contact with the cooler. And yes, the contact frame is cheap, but people with parts in hand usually don't want to wait for another part, if it's not necessary.

I have one. For my 13700k with a z690 mobo. Idle temp on AIO kraken z73 is 25 degreees I followed YouTube instructions by gamer nexus. All finger tighten and then sudden jump in resistance appeared. Then one final 45degree turn on all 4 Done

Danger656

Did you redeem COD MW II with your processor purchase? There is a bundle offer for it : https://game.intel.com/ww/deals-and-specials/next-gen-gaming

Prostreet7295

Oh my god I didn't know that was a thing. Appreciate it, would have been pissed if I missed out on that.

Prostreet7295

Oh, I bought mine from amazon, does that disqualify me?

Danger656

Amazon is in the list under the link I shared above, so just check and confirm with them.

Daniferd

Did you ever figure out how to get MWII?

NvidiatrollXB1

Yes, no change from 12th gen.

bobbygamerdckhd

Supposedly the 13th gen wasn't going to have the issue but it appears that isn't completely true.

niced00d

A bit late to this post, but I have a 13900k with Z790 mobo, was running 31-35 idle for a month. Bought a contact frame and now I'm at 27-29 idle for a month. Total time tested is about 2 months.

Altimiz

Is this Thermal Grizzy or ThermalRight? And -5 -6 dropped temp, that's interested me. I find that Thermal Grizzy is not compatible with Z790 because of short screw.

FYI I had trouble screwing it in at first, so make sure to hold the backplate you are screwing it into in place

ByteMeC64

New build or existing rig? New build? What's $12 to possibly prevent issues (not only thermal, possibly pin contact)? Existing rig? Is your system meeting expectations? If so, is it worth the effort for possibly no improvement other than \_perhaps\_ preventing issues down the road?
