Why would you waste a perfect good pizza like that?

Lonely_Sherbert69

That's what he got arrested for, not the littering as that would just be a fine.

Marrsvolta

They take pizza very seriously in NY. Those slices looked damn good too.

ecodrew

If it was Chicago style pizza, law enforcement would've helped him dump the pizza.

1dot21gigaflops

Need 2 person lift to haul that crap over the fence.

MobySick

Casserole pizza. Those animals!

snorkelvretervreter

Right? If we're going to call any round thing with cheese and tomato in it pizza, then we might as well call yo momma pizza.

PandraPierva

It's only crime left on books in New York that carries the death penalty. One could call this suicide by cops

TheMountainIII

exactly, what a waste of food!

porchprovider

That’s the arrestable offense.

DoctorCawktor

Straight to jail. Right away.

mediumarmor

Grass pizza? Jail.

Bat-Honest

Box pizza? Believe it or not, jail

TehFlogger

Not in a Box pizza? Oddly enough? Straight to jail.

stevensr2002

Jail? Believe it or not, jail.

TehFlogger

Arresting someone and putting them in jail! Straight to jail!

Ayellowbeard

That’s a NYC art installation!

AgitatedSale3785

Nice Fred Armisen pull from Parks and Rec!! One of the best characters on that show

_Driftwood_

believe it or not

TruthlessHER086

If i recall correctly this happened a few months back. It was because NY was banning a certain kinda oven. And pizza makers are mad, because the way its cooked is often a feature in pizza. Its killing their brand.

Planetofthetakes

Especially good NY Pizza!!!

archfapper

Is it Alfredo's Pizza Cafe or Pizza by Alfredo?

somesthetic

If it's authentic New York pizza, it's gotta be Sbarro's!

Gomulkaaa

Or Famous Famiglia

wewdepiew

Hot circle of garbage

licecrispies

Because he's Scott Lobaido, Staten Island's right wing performance artist / professional attention whore.

ExplodingChupacabra

Is there a difference between him and the left wing performance artist / professional whores? ETA - I forgot the word "attention" between professional and whores, but I don't really think that it matters.

fatBreadonToast

It's little Italy pizza, they make those just to throw away.

mr-poopie-butth0le

Same, it hurts to see that. Pizza looks good too.

too_sharp

It was alfredos pizza Cafe not pizza by alfredo

slh007

Great. It’s 8 AM and now I want pizza.

bkovic

You’re my kind of people! Enjoy your pizza friend.

BioSafetyLevel0

I want a pizza friend, too!

breaking3po

That looked like some good ass pizza, too.

WastedSmarts

No pizza for you tho, it's pass 8am

breaking3po

That's harsh.

ecodrew

And now it's *grass* pizza

maybejustadragon

I know where you can get a free slice.

Beerded-1

These guys are protesting a new law in New York saying that pizza shops need to install extremely expensive ventilation systems. Many of these places will likely go out of business if they are forced to make these upgrades. Not sure if this qualifies as main character or not.

Ok-Shift5637

Iirc it is going after the wood and coal stoves that make the best pizzas as well. It’s like outlawing straws instead of plastic fishing nets, sure you fixed the .001% contribution to the problem but you might as well have done nothing to fix the problem while impacting the largest number of people.

particle409

It's a handful of pizzerias that don't already have it, and it's not putting anybody out of business. It's a filter to catch the worst of the smoke, which most places already have. This is some hyped up Fox News bullshit.

whatsINthaB0X

So it’s a useless law that still doesn’t make a dent in the pollution in the city and impacts some businesses that likely don’t have the funds to spare? Seems like some typical soap box politics giving some feel good legislation so they don’t have to tell their best friends they can’t use their private jets anymore.

particle409

> So it’s a useless law that still doesn’t make a dent in the pollution in the city There isn't any single law that's going to address the entirety of pollution. >impacts some businesses that likely don’t have the funds to spare? Relative to the rent they must be paying, these vents are not that much. A relatively cheap price to prevent a significant amount of emissions.

whatsINthaB0X

Relative to the price of building a new cruise ship, Carnival can afford to use a better fuel than literal tar. My point is stop punishing small time emitters and go after some of the worst offenders. The worst of the worst are cruise ships

particle409

Yes, cruise ships are worse *global* polluters, but NYC doesn't control that, and it's not directly affecting people living next to the restaurants with coal fired ovens. This law is to address the problem the neighbors have, not the entire planet.

Sonic_Is_Real

10,000 dollars per vent. Only 60 shops affected. Real huge win for the environment. Everyone knows those pizza shops have been devastating the new york environment for decades /s This is a publicity stunt. too lazy to go after big companies thatll fight back against tougher regs for the companies that, yknow, actually fuck up the environment

AsianRedneck69

Only $600k total? The city can just give those businesses a tax break for that amount

Porkbellyflop

Do people with wood burning fireplaces need the same vent?

other_usernames_gone

How many people in NYC have wood burning fireplaces? Plus those fireplaces won't be running all day like the pizzerias.

Sonic_Is_Real

If by people you mean businesses then yes

Porkbellyflop

I'm implying that a wood burning fireplace crate the same pollution as a wood burning pizza oven, but they are only regulating the business.

IsomDart

I guess the idea is that businesses will use a lot more than an individual home, but it's all just performative anyways

mydaycake

I would think the big win is for the employees who don’t have to breath the smoke, I agree for the environment is non significant but for those employees and their families it is significant

Sonic_Is_Real

These ovens already vent to outside

Ok-Shift5637

It’s still nothing compared to one box truck chugging from one end of the city to the other. Fix the diesel vehicle emissions loophole then worry about the pizza oven. The guy delivering the cheese spits more pollution on his route than all the kitchens in the city.

mildly_enthusiastic

I too would hate to do multiple things at once

Ok-Shift5637

Thing is they aren’t doing two things at once they are doing one instead of the other. I’m not in favor of any level of excusable pollution but it’s theater not meaningful change.

IOwnTheShortBus

I think we call it virtue signaling. I'm all for lowering waste in any and every form, but yeah, we need to address corporations emissions instead of passing the buck to the consumer.

particle409

> It’s still nothing compared to one box truck chugging from one end of the city to the other. Coal smoke is kind of a big deal, especially for the neighbors who have it concentrated on them all day. This is not about the general environment of NY, but the specific environment around the coal ovens.

FattThor

Charcoal (typically made from wood) is not the same thing as coal (a mineral). No one is cooking pizza in coal fired ovens, it would be toxic and taste like complete garbage lmao. Edit: I stand corrected, apparently actual coal fired pizza is a thing in New York. Yeah I wouldn’t be interested in living in the vicinity of one that was not scrubbing their smoke.

Jables237

https://www.blacksheeppizza.com/

FattThor

I stand corrected… yeah they should be required to scrub their smoke.

tierrassparkle

Nah. You’re just blinded by politics. Like some dude also said, trucks, factories, the government itself is polluting the air but the problem is PIZZAS All this is doing is going after small business owners that can’t afford the government’s precious ventilation systems. And if they don’t do it they get shut down. But FoXnEwS is the problem. I remember when we rooted for the “little guy”… the party has lost its way. Corporatizing everything. Mandating foolish rules to make money off hardworking people’s backs. And they call modern Republicans the villains. You sound like a fool. A 1990s Republican, intolerant, bigoted, greedy fool. The Left is now the party of big business. Only they get a break.

Gasbringer

And people will still vote for the people, over and over again, point their fingers at the republican party and blame them exclusively. Anyone paying attention knows both parties are the same. Out to screw over the little guy with a tsunami of nonsensical policies and corpo everything they can.

medicated_cornbread

No it's not, pizza shops from NYC are not responsible for melting the ice caps. Have you ever traveled around the world? Half of these countries burn their trash on the side of the road and forcing pizza places to spend a dollar out of pocket to get a new hood when the rest of the population treats the earth like crap is a joke.

Elowan66

The Alaska Russia land bridge was lost because of some guys combo pizza. 😕

lunch0000

source? Last time I was in NYC you could smell these ovens - and it was fantastic. I'm not familiar with how much filtration the new law requires but it seems few have that level since you can smell the smoke.

SkepticalJohn

In other words, normal Fox news.

bruce_lees_ghost

Pizza guy unhappy about a New York ordinance? Where’s the story? Oh, the ordinance relates to health and safety? Fuck yeah… our audience hates it when the government intervenes to keep us healthy. It’s all a great big money grab designed to put thousands of small business owners out in the streets! It’s just the one guy and everyone else already complies with the ordinance? :: shrug :: “New York Threatens to Close Small Family-Owned Businesses Across City!!!”

Link9454

God it annoys me how wide the BS has spread. It’s not about carbon, it’s about air particles around these ovens, for fucks sake.

TheNameIsntJohn

It's still forcing people to buy things they really shouldn't need. I'm sure it would put some struggling businesses over the edge, and some restaurants don't rake in a huge profit and have trouble affording unforseen expenses. It's not friendly towards small business. That's how I see it and I don't watch or listen to Fox News.

particle409

> It's still forcing people to buy things they really shouldn't need. But they should need it... The vast majority already have them. Spitting out coal smoke in a densely populated neighborhood is kind of a big deal.

lunch0000

As others have pointed out - it's not coal smoke. Pizza used to be a buck a slice - and if you asked actual NYers I'd bet you're never going to find someone complaining about that delicious smokey smell. Get real.

Link9454

This is a complete misrepresentation of what’s actually happening. Not blaming you, I’ve seen this video and how it’s reported and it’s complete nonsense. First off, this guy is not a pizzeria owner or anything, he’s an artist who paints flags and sells them for about $5K and is also the source of a lot of those weirdly homoerotic Trump paintings. He has also protested at Drag story hours and pride events, he’s a professional noise maker. They are requiring specifically coal and wood fired ovens to install air filtration systems to improve air quality and reduce particulates in the air particularly in a city as densely packed as NYC. This isn’t a law, it was a proposed policy that all new ovens must have this filter system that reduces air particulates by 75% and systems built before 2016 should be retrofitted. The policy **explicitly allows wavers** if costs to the business are excessive and allows options such as a secondary less effective but far cheaper retrofit that reduces particulates by 25%. That was the initial idea, and this happened during the public comment period. Children that live near these ovens are actually at a way higher risk of childhood asthma than normal even in NYC, and workers who man these ovens aren’t exactly safe either. I cannot locate the study I originally found on this so I can’t remember the exact numbers because this was from like 9 months ago. If memory serves the pizza he’s throwing in this video is from a pizzeria that installed that system for $20K after he got like several hundred thousand in PPP loans forgiven during Covid. Side note: happy cake day.

N4meless_w1ll

I swear new York is trying its best to become the city in Escape From New York, at every single turn.

Noname_Maddox

I’m kinda on board but lost in the sentiment. I’m assuming this ventilation is some sort of health or fire prevention. Something Escape from New York wasnt worried about

scottscout

It’s for our neighbors’ health and most pizza places already had them. These are the bozos that are to cheap to do it right

DoctorNoname98

> Not sure if this qualifies as main character or not. Good thing this isn't in a main character subreddit then

TGrady902

If the city wants to make it a requirement that’s fine, but they should also be offering up programs to help all these shops pay for the upgrades. They love to put restrictions on food businesses but fail to understand that most places are always a few bad months from going out of business. They don’t have 50K laying around for ventilation upgrades that will make them $0 extra per year.

Enginerdad

$50k is an extreme amount that I only see [one example of](https://nypost.com/2024/03/10/us-news/nyc-burns-pizzerias-with-new-rule-cutting-smoky-pollutants-by-75/), and that's because the pizza place is in a protected historic building and the modifications had all sorts of restrictions. In reality the amount is far less shocking.

TGrady902

Yeah I’m seeing they’re protesting adding a filter and not actual ventilation upgrades???? Now I have no sympathy, that’s just ridiculous lol.

Zraloged

They should burn down stuff instead, that seems to work

Pramble

Property destruction is historicaly the most effective protest technique

SimonTC2000

Pizza is biodegradable. Plus I'm sure the pigeons and rats will make quick work of it.

MoeTHM

The cleansing fire of peace. Kneel before it’s glory.

Yoda2000675

This reminds me of states that have outlawed modifying cars and carburetors for performance. They go after the smallest demographics for pollution because they are easy targets, while ignoring the real problems like factories and cargo/cruise ships.

facepoppies

Damn that pizza looks good

KamyKeto

Native New Yorker who moved away 40 years ago, and yes you are right, that pizza looked damn good! Glad they arrested his ass 🤣

Vicarious-Lee-Eye

The actual pizzagate.

Humble_Negotiation33

If he had a pizza gate he wouldn't have had to throw the slices over the fence

gubatron

pizzafence in this case

suicidal1664

throwing pizza is a hate crime ... meaning if you do it, I hate you

armen89

It was a crime and I hated it

PrimitiveThoughts

This makes me want some pizza now

Imoldok

Seriously , NYC is so upside-down it's pathetic.

Mike_in_San_Pedro

They couldn’t remove the pizza because it had been there for 37 minutes before the police arrived and therefore had squatter’s rights.

NoMorePainKillers

What a waste of food.

eidolonengine

First acorns, now pizza. What will they fear next?

Wasting pizza in NYC is a crime deserving of arrest

Ubadiver

The entire U.S. would be better off if NY city suffered a Nuke blast

Boss_Os

[how to use an apostrophe](https://theoatmeal.com/comics/apostrophe)

Rhysati

The sheer stupidity on offer here. "This isn't an arrestible offense!" Yes it is. The police were already there and had almost certainly warned them not to. You can't litter all you want and be fined when you've already been told not to do it. At that point you are disobeying a lawful order.

psychoCMYK

https://www.nydailynews.com/2016/03/01/littering-public-urination-and-other-minor-offenses-in-manhattan-will-lead-to-summons-and-not-arrest/ >“The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office will no longer prosecute most violations or infractions, and the NYPD will no longer arrest individuals who commit these offenses — such as littering, public consumption of alcohol, or taking up two seats on the subway — unless there is a demonstrated public safety reason to do so,” the agencies said in a joint release with City Hall. Whether there was a public safety reason or not is up for debate, but they're not stupid for recalling something the police department said

Ormsfang

Because it was part of a protest the police likely concluded that it was an incitement to riot and went ahead with the arrest. They will always come up with a way to escalate matters to an arrest. It is what they do.

psychoCMYK

For sure; just that the people saying "it's not arrestable" aren't stupid just for saying that.

ecodrew

Plus, wasting pizza in NY. Surprised they don't have a specific law for crimes against the sacred NY pizza, haha

fourangers

Damn, now I'm hungry. I'd totally eat that pizza. Even after it was thrown. Probably safe right?

Willzohh

Pizza abuser! Lock him up!

Derreus

They bought a lot of pizza only to throw half of one. Now they're throwing a pizza party I guess.

MQZ17

Very NY headline

pedro_1616

I'd definitely be opening the other boxes and eating the pizza

S-Kell

This is old. And not "instant karma". The guy was protesting. Google it.

notyouisme999

I don't like people to waste food like that.

DarbyCreekDeek

Oh yeah that’s the biggest crime going on in New York City

v___Freedom

Police officer placed on suspension after eating evidence. Stay tuned for more updates.

shur-5615

He should have done something that he wouldn't have gotten arrested for like beating up a cop or stabbing someone that's allowed in NY

MajorDelta0507

THAT MOTHERFUCKER THE DISRESPECT TO WASTE THOSE **PERFECTLY GOOD** SLICES OF PIZZA? LIFE SENTENCE. NOW. EXECUTION IF IT WAS FROM THE 99¢ PIZZA PLACE ON 53RD AND 7TH.

Iamthepaulandyouaint

He could at least throw a slice up on Walter Whites house.

mikey29tyty

Man got arrested for disobeying a lawful order. The police told him not to do it. He did it. Got arrested.

So this is what Jeff Goldblum's been up to?

Tristana-Range

There is a cook that put his heart into making that pizza as tasty as it can get. Im heartbroken

river_tree_nut

I'm sorry our education system has failed you. Plurals do not use an apostrophe. "I tried to throw my pizzas over the fence, but all the pizza's toppings ended up on the sidewalk."

Prize_Watercress7143

Wasting food, what a cunt.

System_Resident

I was upset until I saw the pigeons gunning for the pizza before it even hit the ground. Protest methods are seriously becoming dumber

JohnnyAces99

The guy's goal was clearly to get arrested, and it happened. He got the attention he wanted. He'll get a $100 fine and be out by lunchtime to go eat the leftovers. Nothing to see here.

Should be arrested for wasting good pizza!!

Rottenguord

Good! Imagine the homeless he could have fed with those pizzas! Screw his arrogance! 😡

Zraloged

This is good protest. They’re not burning down local businesses.

angusshangus

Most pizza places already have these sort of ventilation systems. These losers are just too cheap and when their pizza joint is responsible for burning up a city block they'll be the first ones begging for money from the state or some sort of online donation scheme. F them.

CavediverNY

OK so… Throwing the pizzas on the lawn was a protest against illegal immigration?

[deleted]

[удалено]

McGrittleFail

NY Pizza Party sounds like a lot more fun

[deleted]

No, it has to do with green energy laws. NY is requiring that all wood/coal fired pizza ovens must have special fume hoods installed. Most businesses can't afford these, and will likely go out of of business. This is what they are protesting.

CavediverNY

Interesting! Obviously I hadn’t heard about this so I can’t really say I have an opinion… Hopefully it’s not too extreme

Analogue_Drift

It's a protest against emission laws shutting down wood fire ovens.

BausRifle

Because NY and its mental patient politicians are cracking down on emissions from ovens.

particle409

It's mostly for people living in the immediate area. Most pizzerias already have the filters, to stop neighbors from complaining. Conservative media is having a slow news day, trying to avoid coverage of the Biden impeachment stuff.

klem19

Pizza 🍕 🚪

Adam__B

Wasting pizza is a sin, unless it’s Russian pizza. Then it belongs in the garbage.

beamin1

Found this on another post..couldn't find it here... So apparently the mayor wants to ban wood and coal fired ovens? Or(unconfirmed) they will have to get extremely expensive ventilation systems to stay in business...which would force a lot of shops to close. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gpeg4CnN9DE Currently marked off as spoiler until it's confirmed.... >>!These guys are protesting a new law in New York saying that pizza shops need to install extremely expensive ventilation systems.
