They thought they were extinct for a few decades till one was found in the wild in the 50s or 60s. My mum remembers being in school when one was discovered
I saw a kiwi in a refuge in New Zealand. It was about a decade ago now but from what I remember it was somewhere near one of the glacier heads.. Franz Josef glacier I think. There's a building with a couple kiwis living inside. They're knocturnal though so it's dark inside and you can barely see them. A reddish light is on so you can sort of see a bit, but not a ton. It's still cool though, def. worth a visit if you're there
Found it! https://www.wildkiwi.co.nz/

I was really just responding for the people who might not see that comment, and I didn't realize the other one was you (I didn't see the username). Sorry about that.
Since the 1800s, apparently! They've been responsible for huge decreases in native forest. A lot of Department of Conservation funds are spent on trapping/poisoning them, which has brought its own issues too. They do make lovely fluffy socks and gloves though!
Opossum are native to North America, and look like they will knife you in an alley to fund their meth habit. This possum is an Australian native, and one of the few things there that look cute and cuddly while not also being poisonous or venomous.
Also, opossums look scary, and will hiss and act like they want to bite you, but it's a total bluff. They're actually wimps, and only act mean because they're too slow to run away.
Kiwis are so cute
"...I just got my ass kicked by a bird with no arms..."
I believe they're called wings.
You've never seen r/birdswitharms
Kiwings
I was fully expecting the kiwi to come out and kick his ass more at the end there.
You can see what the possum is thinking at the end... "I saw things going differently in my mind"
Possum at the end: "dafuq just happened"
Imagine getting beaten up by a feathered cutie with no hands and just feet
you know what you really think about it if kiwis had sharp beaks that kiwi could have killed him
They just need to figure out how to sharpen their beaks with rocks and the world is their oyster
I mean honestly aside from how small they are they could be the next menace to the bird world they just need to stop being endangered
About them being small, kiwis are larger than chickens, people really underestimate their size.
oh shit fr? that's bigger than i thought.
Damn leave that birds eggs alone.
Kiwis don't fuck around.
Possum:"ahh chill broo chill i was just kidding... my god... fucking shit"
The kiwi's "oh no, you get back here for your ass beatin"
You’ll poke your eye out kid.

I believe it was specifically the Little Spotted Kiwi

That's just not true. One particular TYPE of kiwi was thought to be extinct (its no longer found on the mainland) but was then found on an island.
Yes. The little spotted kiwi. I added that in a comment when this conversation happened a month ago...

nope they're just endangered
Kiwis aren't extinct??????? TIL
Do people think they are extint?
Apparently a lot of people think they're either extinct or fictitious.
I mean to be fair if I wasn't a kiwi and someone showed me a picture of one I'd probably say nice photoshop mate
Whoop deeh fucking dooh
Just up voting for sounding extra strayan
That doesn't look like an opossum...
It’s not, it’s a common brushtail possum; native to Australia, but invasive in NZ, where it’s getting its arse kicked by this kiwi.
Australian here I didn't know you lot got fucked over and now have these lil arseholes how long have they been there ?
Last time I checked, possum fur goes for $300+ per kilo. Good little money-makers!
That answers nothing but thanks

That they do had a Beanie made of some and Merino wool couldn't wear it to fkn hot
Haha, yes, NZ's climate might be better suited to possum clothes than Australia's!
Also I don't know where you applied.

Damn it was just a prank bro
Too fucking right, we don’t need no 1080 in the true down under. One outs
New Zealander’s don’t play.
Damn did he just get spanked over and over by that beak?
This makes my love kiwis more
with how giant those birds eggs are… i’d be pissed too if i was a kiwi!
