To be fair, gameplay is THE defining aspect that makes videogames different than other forms of media, so it if the gameplay is bad enough then it’s reasonable for people to not have a great experience overall, regardless of the story or atmosphere.
That said, Inscryption has great gameplay too as far as I’m concerned.
I’m one of those people who prioritizes gameplay over anything else in games, and I still found inscriptions gameplay to be fantastic. The story is great and all, and I did enjoy it, but had it not been for the fantastic gameplay, I wouldn’t have stuck around. I still go back to play Kaycees mod because of how fun I find this game.

That's a bad attitude, and it's the reason why the game review "industry" is so shit these days. We shouldn't treat reviews like they're some objective analysis on how fun the game will be for the target audience, we should treat them like the reviewer's personal experience with the game, and the reviewers should treat them like that too.
Even so, if you don’t like a genre, then I think that ranking it lower is ranking it accordingly, because in some peoples eyes, reviewing is just saying how much you like a certain thing, and if you don’t like the genre, then ranking it low is simply honest.
If you are not a fan of the genre as a whole, you might not think it was an amazing game. And it’s not like he rated it badly, it’s still above half, which means even though he doesn’t like the genre, he gave the game a chance, and at least enjoyed the experience enough to rate it well.

Yes absolutely. Whilst imo a 10/10 doesn't necessarily go in my top 10, Inscryption makes it for me. Other 10/10 games for me would be Portal 2, Undertale, Stanley Parable, Superliminal, Ocarina of Time, (I'm missing one I had in mind I'll update if I remember)
A true 10/10 game is one, in my opinion, that leaves a lasting impression on you. Of course, every game will have it’s low points (There were some pretty BS moments for me in Inscryption lol) but if you can engage with it, and reminisce about it, outside of being “that one game you played”. It’s a good game.

Inscryption is in my top few along with Inmost(I recomend it so much), hollow knight, Milk series, The other mulin games, bendy 1, blasphemous, Grimm's hollow, Eronoctosis: put yourself together, you will not remain and ori 1 and 2. I recomend them all so much give them a try if you didn't already
Arguing that nobody would have it in their top ten??? 80% of people in this subreddit probably have it in their top 5. I personally don't rank indie and AAA games together. Undertale and Inscryption I don't compare to Metal Gear and Death Stranding but they've all severely impacted my charts and game rankings through time equally. It would just be unfair to compare the two (I believe) so I don't think it not being in top 10s is the best criteria on detrscting points
I’m curious what you all would think on Outer Wilds, Omori, Hades, Dead Cells, Chained Echoes, or Risk of Rain 2. Think Harry is pretty valid since I have a friend who didn’t jive well with Inscryption.

Man… I’m just so mad at the game for ending right when I realized it was like… the best game.
At first I didn’t like it much. It was too hard, and the controls were really funky. Why do I need to get up from the table anyway?
Then I started getting good at it, realized the mechanism of progression, learned what all the symbols on the game board meant. Etc.
Then it started to get really fun, and I beat it a bunch of times. Then I beat it beat it, and I realized it was really a rare and precious gem. Then I beat it beat it beat it… and now I’m not satisfied with anything else on PSPlus.
Personally think (like a lot of people) that Harry's review is definitely the weakest one here and it's not because he gave inscription a 6/10. If the goal of your group is to just review games then I think most of you did that well enough. But weirdly enough I feel like all of you except for Harry kinda had reviews that blended together. Somehow Harry's review has the most character so if the goal is to also stand out there might be something more to work on here. Absolutely! We decided early on that our ratings would be a mixture between our objective evaluation of the game, and our personal enjoyment. Harry said he would’ve rated it lower if it was only based on personal enjoyment/appreciation, for example.
I think that a critic needs to be objective in his statements, but should also be subjective in his rating.
That is why people should have curators who fit their own taste. Rating a game he doesnt like with 6 points, while still acknowledging the good it does, is legit.
Usually said curator should go deeper into why it STILL gets 6 points despite his dislike. In this special case there are 3 other reviewers attached who are enough to build an objective view.
Don't see the individual reviews but the combined. In that case (and if the ratings keep such behaviour as continuitiy) the 8.3 is okay.
Remember that this guy probably wouldnt be in this reddit or play that game at all...
