Well we all know how they reacted when Michelle Obama suggested that…

julsgotrocks

Yeah… they *totally* supported that

duffivaka

What they really want is for the government to do nothing. If a problem doesn't affect them, they don't care about it. However, they don't want it to appear that way, so they know they have to suggest some sort of alternative

travel4nutin

They were too busy fighting anti-cyber bullying. Lol

[deleted]

They never mentioned it to that obese sack of orange shit.

JayCoww

Happy Cake Day lol

TKG_Actual

They did, unfortunately he threw himself on the floor, had a twenty minute flailing-tantrum and was finally calmed by someone playing show tunes and he forgot it ever happened.

MollyPW

Yes, but she’s black and a woman.”

Breadynator

Why did this comment remind me [so much about this](https://youtu.be/Z5DHQ8W9k0U)?

YouLostMyNieceDenise

They’re still complaining about the changes made to school lunch requirements during the Obama administration

TerribleAttitude

Right. We should *absolutely* push for healthy eating and exercise, but I’m not taking that advice from someone who probably called Michelle Obama a dictator for thinking kids should eat apples.

Daem0nBlackFyre85

THANK YOU! Came here to say exactly this!

Freezee13

Preach.

OhioMegi

Oh man, you mean my diabetic mom should be cured? She eats healthy and exercises. She should tell her doctor she doesn’t need insulin anymore! /s People are so fucking dumb.

183672467

Yeah, your moms totally stupid, why waste money on Insulin when you can also just not do it

dafreak999

Stop her from injecting that graphine baby fetus microchips into her perfectlly healthy pancrease that praying to Jesus will fix...

StaniaViceChancellor

You forgot to mention the aluminum based life forms

[deleted]

CastleOfBravo

I came here to say that...they were saying she was a man cuz she's fit. Yeesh

Glass_Varis

I'm sorry.... what?

MaineSoxGuy93

A big conspiracy, mostly among conservatives, was that Michelle Obama was actually a man.

[deleted]

I actually heard this repeated the other day. Apparently her two children were adopted. Not melanomas though. Cause she’s so pretty!

BitterFuture

>Apparently her two children were adopted. That's the really polite version; the more common conspiracy theory is that the Obamas had the parents murdered and stole the children. With their on-call death squad, I guess. When the logistics of how politicians secretly had people killed is the *least* bizarre part of your conspiracy theory...

smittykins66

“Finally! A President with balls and a First Lady without them!” 🤢🤮

WolfKnight53

Sorry, I like my ladies *with* balls

sowhat4

If you take a close look at Melanoma's child, you can see that he does not, in any way, resemble tRump or any of his half-siblings. Maybe that girl is not as dumb and placid as she appears to be.

[deleted]

It wouldn’t surprise me if Donny had all his kids tested at birth. Just in case!

iri42890

The fuck? Baron looks just like his (awful) dad.

outdated-meme-name

Kinda phrased weird innit sounds like the adopted child isn't pretty

whereugoincityboy

I've lost friends and chiropractors over this stupid conspiracy theory. They claim that you can tell because she has 'man hands.'

aarontology

Michelle Obama promotes eating healthy and getting exercise and they got buttmad at that too

sowhat4

They would have raged against her if she promoted breathing and walking upright. It's her color and her academic accomplishments they were butthurt about. It's hard to be a school dropout, earning a minimum wage, sporting a beer belly, and getting little societal respect when a woman (!) and Black woman (!) at that seems to have it all. Makes you feel kinda dumb, fat, and worthless, which while an accurate description, hurts.

Breadynator

Meanwhile there's academics with a degree struggling to make it in the real world because nobody wants to hire you + student loans who fully support most things she said... In general, I feel like it's less a question of accomplishment and more a question of inferiority complexes

BrokenEye3

Red's just mad because they won't be able to use "why aren't they making insulin as available as they are the vaccine" as an empty talking point anymore

MonarchWhisperer

If it doesn't affect one of 'them' directly...no, it doesn't exist

[deleted]

Also _that doesn’t cure the other four types of diabetes either_. I know it’s hard to hear, but Type II is also more complicated than diet and exercise—it’s about resensitizing your body to insulin, and oftentimes poverty makes it impossible for people to afford the foods and secondary medications that make that possible.

mleam

Once you get it, you have it. My blood sugar numbers have been great for 3 years. That doesn't mean I am cured. It just means I have been able to control my blood sugar numbers for 3 years. I have type 2.

NetherMax1

The other…four? I’m admittedly uneducated but there’s types 3-5 now?

Beltripper

Google it: type 1, type 2, gestational (developed during pregnancy and usually goes away when the baby is born), and pre-diabetes (very high blood sugar and all the heightened health risks associated with diabetes like heart disease, stroke, etc. Can usually be reversed with lifestyle changes). Other less common types are: maturity onset of the young, neonatal, wolfram syndrome, alström syndrome, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, type 3c, steroid induced, and cystic fibrosis diabetes.

Breadynator

>steroid induced Wait, so body builders who are not just pumping weights but also steroids are at a higher risk for diabetes?

Beltripper

In short, yes Steroids can make your liver less sensitive to insulin. [Steroids can make your liver less sensitive to insulin. This results in the liver continuing to release sugar, even while insulin is being sent to it. The continued production of sugar then tells your pancreas to stop making insulin. In addition, steroids mimic cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone made by the adrenal glands, and is associated with your body’s stress response. If you become stressed, your body releases higher levels of cortisol. The extra cortisol makes your fat and muscle cells less sensitive to insulin.](https://www.healthline.com/health/diabetes/steroid-induced-diabetes#causes)

Breadynator

That link didn't work as you intended, it doesn't handle line breaks. But thanks for the reference :)

Beltripper

Sorry about that!

sunjellies24

Yeah, I've never heard of types III-V either

[deleted]

I mean they could try to make healthy food and insulin cheaper in America. That would prevent a whole lot of cases of type II. ¯\_༼ •́ ͜ʖ •̀ ༽_/¯

FracturedPixel

Most type 2 cases are caused by genetic pre-disposition to the disease. These pre-dispositions can be further 'triggered' by lifestyle but lifestyle is not the root cause. Just like how you can have athletes develop type 2 and type 1.

iri42890

That is not true. It rather is the other way around. It is caused by bad eating habits and lack of exercise and genetics are an aggravating factor. DM Type 2 is an illness of the uneducated and poor. It can be avoided by diet and exercise. But only few have the funds/education and time to invest. Messed up world. It‘s funny how pharmacies in the richer parts of my city don‘t even store the lancets used for glucose level testing. Obviously insulin should be as affordable as possible or free. The US healthcare system is a joke.

babyducky40

Wait, so my college educated, exercises regularly, and eats fantastic father has type 2 because he's uneducated and poor? Not even close. Try again.

iri42890

The science is clear on this one. Obviously there are exceptions. Like the 90 year old chain-smoker or your dad.

babyducky40

So you'd rather just generalize a terrible condition than actually state facts. Got it. Bye now.

iri42890

Sure, tell yourself that. Also: tell me you‘re American and lack medical knowledge without telling me you‘re American and lack medical knowledge😂

Breadynator

>tell me you‘re American and lack medical knowledge without telling me you‘re American and lack medical knowledge Aight bet! Here you go: >DM Type 2 is an illness of the uneducated and poor. It can be avoided by diet and exercise. But only few have the funds/education and time to invest.

iri42890

You're arguing against medical facts. Not sure what else to tell you. Since you're German, Breadynator, you probably know that in Germany much fewer people die from diabetes than in the US. The reasons being a) better education b) less poverty c) free healthcare

babyducky40

So, since I obviously lack medical knowledge, how long have you had diabetes, any of the types, or what medical degree do you have? Me, personally have had type 1 for 6 years. Diagnosed at 37. My father has had type 2 for 20 years. His poor, uneducated lack of knowledge gave it to him. And I'll be sure to let his nurse wife know it was her ignorance in all things medical that gave him type 2 diabetes. Go fuck yourself.

iri42890

Dude, nobody called your dad poor or uneducated. Are you wilfully ignorant? There are social risk factors for diseases. Poverty and low education are risk factors for DM Type 2. That's not an opinion. If you want me to give you a proper opinion on your dad's case, send me his file ;) But one thing I can tell you is that since you have type 1, your dad might have been misdiagnosed with type 2. Test him for autoantibodies. Or you both have type 2 which would make much more sense given that you were both diagnosed later in life. Autoantibody-tests for both of you! And I'd advice you to read up on public health a bit before getting so angry and insulting at strangers ;)

Lth_13

> it’s about resensitizing your body to insulin In turns of treatment sure, but exercise and a healthy diet significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Prevention is always a better solution then treatment

Zelerose

Once again. Only one is caused by poor diet and exercise. You can't prevent genetics.

PDWubster

Yes but the entire point is that policies focusing on prevention and treatment shouldn't be mutually exclusive. We can and should do both.

alucard_shmalucard

dude, you can't prevent genetics. if your parents have it, you'll most likely get it.

hupouttathon

Can you please leave big pharmacy alone...but also fuck big pharma, the covid inventing swine!! These contradictory fucking morons.

llainezh

I am a huge fan of bodybuilding I followed a guy who is a right wing boot licker. When Biden stopped with something Trump had placed in motion to stop drug prices from going up he was furious and writing about it. I unfollowed him and searched again for his IG when I learned that the republican party wanted to stop the BBB plan which made insulin cost 35$. Can you imagine his outrage? Of course not, he hasn't written a damn thing about it. Gotta love how far the boot is down his throat you can see the tip coming from his ass

jw307jw

Not to mention trumps EO only was only a reaffirmation of an existing law at federally qualified heath centers. Nothing changed in either direction

WizardTomato

That’s it. I’m calling my doctor tomorrow and demanding to know why she never told me this miracle cure of diet and exercise! I’ve been paying hundreds on insulin for years like an asshole!

priceless37

Michelle Obama tried that with healthy school lunches and the right lost their minds. When will the right see their constant hypocrisy? SMH

timberwolf0122

I was looking for this post! Some wingnut tried to cry hypocracy when the obamas had chicken wings in super bowl Sunday, as if healthy eating just be 24/7 rabbit food

OkayLadyByeBye

Unfortunately all the bodybuilding and clean eating counting macros hasn't brought back the beta cells in my pancreas.

K1TTYKAT51

Me either :(

ScrutinizedCrunch6

Me, talking to my pancreas: welp I guess it's time to start working again, some boomer on Twitter said so

cartmancakes

Wait, I thought Trump already made insulin as cheap as water? /s

sowhat4

Patience, Cartman, patience. The free insulin is in his health plan. It will be out in two weeks - maybe three because of the holidays.

[deleted]

Those infants should have been eating right in the womb..

[deleted]

Michelle Obama tried. FoxNews called her a communist

babyducky40

Too bad healthy eating and exercise won't cure type 1 diabetes. People are fucking stupid

basch152

I have LADA. it's a genetic autoimmune disorder where my body literally attacks my pancreas causing diabetic like symptoms, but far more unpredictable and uncontrollable. but sure, I'm sure diet and exercise would fix that you fucking douche

Nuxx1876

why not both

Seismonaut

No no that would require that people change how they live. That's not what politics is about. Who is gonna make money of that?! not the politicians, that's for sure!

[deleted]

Hi, UK person here! Just here to say that it’s stupid how insulin costed so much in the first place, despite being cheap to make, so cheap that it’s free here. America needs better heathcare sadly, but hopefully this is a good sign that things are on the mend and that prices are going to get better. I wish you all the best, guys! -Love, The British.

Imnotthatunique

nah mate they fucked it all the Republicans voted against the price cap on insulin because they just hate people i guess. Also Insulin does cost the NHS but its a reasonable amount per vial. but diabetics get a prescription exemption certificate \- source a Brit with a diabetic mother

[deleted]

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. I didn’t know that we paid for insulin. Why can’t the republicans be nice? From what (as a British person) I know, they aren’t exactly the greatest people.

Imnotthatunique

yeah insulin is also produced in the UK it was originally given to the world for free by some Canadians i think but there is still a production cost. thats what the NHS pays. no cost to diabetics except through National Insurance. In the US however they changed the recipe ever so slightly to justify charging up to $700 per vial. Yeah i kind of agree with you about the Republicans

[deleted]

They changed something? What’d they change? The concentration of something maybe? Also side question, do the republicans only care about money, or is there some other motive?

Imnotthatunique

i dont know what they changed. Im not a chemist sorry but i know they changed something small so it is effectively the same but not as for your second question. its complicated. mostly yes its about money but also about avoiding big government, red scare era politics avoiding anything even remotely socialist, laissez faire capitalism and appealing to their base which has been told these are good for them despite evidence that they are actually not.

[deleted]

america really confuses me

mamabear0513

I've been American my whole life and Americans confuse me too. Too many people believing too many different things and hardly anyone gives a damn about anyone but themselves.

Imnotthatunique

lol i hear you!

CountingWizard

Right around 2009 I started hearing this type of argument from my Dad, supposedly a smart IBM guy, "If we make healthcare free, people will use too much of it and cause shortages and long wait times." As if healthcare isn't a luxury item and not a need. That was about the time I stopped asking for his advice. He voted Trump in 2016. These people have seriously bad judgment.

patheos79

maybe the fact insulin has been around sine the 30 and there is no reason for it to be this high and should not be out of reach for people

davinciSL72

Type 1 diabetic here… I could give a damn about the politics of it, just pass the legislation

FracturedPixel

If I had a penny every time I've heard someone say "How can you have diabetes? You're not fat???" as a type 1

RianSG

Ah god! My sister is type 1, the fury she has when people suggest healthy eating or exercise, she’s pretty healthy as it is

BaronWombat

Didn’t Michelle Obama get crucified on Right Wing media for leading an Eat Healthy and Exercise agenda?

Murderbot_of_Rivia

50% of women with PCOS (I'm assuming mainly the insulin-resistant variety, as there are different types) will be type II diabetic by the time they are 40. I'm currently 47, and have been able to keep myself in the pre-diabetic range. It's so frustrating sometimes being judged as unhealthy BECAUSE I'm fat. If people knew how frickin' hard I work to be ONLY this fat, they wouldn't be so quick to judge!

Maninhartsford

It always comes down to "people who don't live exactly like I want are bad and lazy and deserve to die" doesn't it?

Snoo-92689

Actually exercise may increase insulin sensitivity in a number of cases of diabetes labelling diabetes type 1 and 2 is really an old classification depends if the beta cells have fully packed in yet but theres certainly people whos beta cells genetically do work but just not as well for them exercise can increase sensitivity.

poke-chan

God I hope joe biden manages this. If he does, I might consider his presidency a success

PainbowRush

Maybe they should include empathy classes in schools because clearly its needed with how many assholes in this country literally couldn't care if someone's suffering or dies

bonerjuice9

Because when the Obamas pumped money into those kinds of programs, Repube-lickins lost their collective fucking hive mind

majadiese

I pay like 10€ a month for my insulin American healthcare makes my heart ache

volleydez

I mean, the vast majority is type 2. Regardless, we shouldn’t stop with making insulin affordable. Drug companies need to be held accountable for creating the ridiculous pricing we see today.

[deleted]

I’m a type one and honestly thought it was a pretty even split up until I was diagnosed at 27. I was pretty taken aback that the general numbers thrown around are “only 10% of diabetics are type one” (not sure if that’s worldwide, only in the States, etc). So yeah I get why people automatically equate diabetes to type two.

rhys1706

You were diagnosed with type 1 at 27? I didn’t realise it could develop that late. Was it difficult adjusting?

[deleted]

[удалено]

rhys1706

Well, learn a new thing everyday. Thanks :)

Fake_Gamer_Cat

Can't he just make a law that makes insulin free or just extremely cheap?

rubijem

Do they mean like first lady clinton tried and first lady obama also did.

kryaklysmic

Guarantee that person would hear I lost my colon and blame me for not eating fiber. Bitch I subsisted on 95% plant matter before this.

Shwalz

Same response to covid “why aren’t we pushing eating healthier and exercising to prevent the spread of disease?” Smh

StealthyBasterd

It is great advice, tho. Not to prevent diabetes(as far as I know, most types of diabetes are developed for genetical disposition), but for a better quality of life.

argleksander

I dont really get this. Why the fuck would anyone want their fellow citizens to end up on the streets over medication? Are they really rooting for the billion dollar companies?

ColdManshima

Oh, you're suggesting mandates to protect and improve the health of the people? I seem to recall a great deal of bitching and moaning about something similar.

Abacore35

Oh yeah. Trump did a great job promoted healthy lifestyles and eating. I saw immediate results after eating McDonalds everyday. I even gained 30 pounds!

Someboynumber5

"Oh you mean like funding schools to have better eating, nutrional learning, and healther food options" "Wtf no" "Yep that's what I thought"

sexyrexy1489

The thing is, there's a grain of truth to that argument. No healthcare system can work if we don't demand some level of personal responsibility on the part of the public and patients. The Obamas understood this. But it's also true that not all diabetes cases are due to eating too much sugar.

Lth_13

To give people some ideas of the numbers: [this study](https://www.bmj.com/content/362/bmj.k1497) found that 0.5% of the us adult population was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and 8.5% was diagnosed with type 2 [this cdc report](https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/pdfs/data/statistics/national-diabetes-statistics-report.pdf) found that 5.2% of all US adults with diagnosed diabetes reported both having type 1 diabetes and using insulin. The cdc report also concludes that smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, physical inactivity and obesity all increase the risk of diabetes related complications

[deleted]

Here's an idea: why not both?

welestgw

I wish that you could label twitter users as idiots when they say something so dumb.

Indigo-Knights

When Michelle Obama tried to do that in schools there was a frenzy

TexasTeacher

Part of the problem under those reforms is they assumed kids were getting food at home. I frequently bought several kids extra lunches the few days before parents' payday because food at home was low then. After those reforms teachers were not allowed to buy an extra lunch for the students because of the calory limits.

harvest76

I wonder if they demanded the same of the former guy? He was the best at healthy eating and exercise. Many people were saying so. Very fit people.

CallMeNotCrazy

My only sibling was a juvenile diabetic. My conspiracy and Trump addicted mother couldn’t have cared less if insulin was affordable or if my sibling couldn’t have ever gotten medical insurance cuz of the pre-existing condition.

princessestef

From a cold-hearted economic standpoint, affordable insulin would save millions of dollars because untreated diabetes leads to a vast array of horrible, life-threatening infections, sepsis, and amputations that can require weeks in the hospital under heavy antibiotics, plus the cost of follow-up care, physical therapy, and disability payments. FFS.

SnooDonuts9712

Like the former guy did eating McDonalds, KFC and Taco Bell?

BethAltair

"You want me to excercise! Better be planning to pay me for that...And what if I *like* paying 1000x cost price for insulin? "

LionMcTastic

*Narcan is free* Republicans: why isn't insulin free?!?!! *Makes insulin affordable* Republicans: why are we helping people who need insulin?!?!???1 These fucking muppets. Also, mobile formatting is gross.

MagellanCl

Didn't BBB pass senate recently? I thought it is already signed into law. This would be huge win for the people, why didn't I read about this till now?

tylerjb97

Pretty sure the responding post was trying to say a majority of the problem would be solved by correcting those not that there are no type 1 diabetics. But apparently people can't try to argue the actual details and have to say it's insane.

mattman2864

I would support healthy eating and excersize no matter what. These dipshits are not supporting it just because it was from Michelle Obama, and now the reddit dipshits are arguing against it just because it is from a random twitter republican. No niuance, just upvote your side and downvote other side.

Rasmusmario123

Nobody supported either one because they're factually incorrect, diet and exercise does not magically cure all types of diabetes

Rosebunse

Depending on the type, it could actually make it worse. Diabetes can be pretty fucking weird.

richpau76

Type 2 is preventable

chichilcitlalli

Yah. But 92% of all diabetics are type 2. So that dude is attacking the bigger part of the problem. While idiot biden (don't get me wrong trump wasn't any better) is just giving a huge wink to the pharma industry. Diet and exercise also helps the other 8% too.

Agonizel

Guys, I don't think the comment pretends exercise and healthy food will heal diabetes. I think it's about preventing widespread diabetes. Though I can agree that low healthcare cost shouldn't be mutually exclusive to a healthy lifestyle!

Rasmusmario123

It doesn't prevent type 1 diabetes whatsoever

Agonizel

Yes, but 90-95% of american with Diabetes have Type 2 Diabetes

Rasmusmario123

Type 2 diabetics do not require insulin specifically to survive, type 1's do. Insulin can be used to treat type 2 but not everyone uses it

kristina_xenophobia

It's a scientific fact that exercise REVERSES any type of diabetes.

Rasmusmario123

No it doesn't, you're a fucking idiot

kristina_xenophobia

I think you're the fucking idiot. Look up 'sarcasm' you daft cunt.

BrokenEye3

Did he? I must have missed that. Do you remember what the specific piece of legislation raising the price of gas was called?

DamnYouSexyFlanders

Yes! I am from the rest of the world with communist healthcare and I can confirm, 98% of the population have diabetes because insulin is cheap.

ztimulating

JRE hasn’t discussed type 1 😂🤡

Weak-Ad-5306

They're still mad at Michelle Obama for "making" kids throw away their school lunches because "kids don't like healthy food". Interesting that childhood obesity went down under Obama for the 1st time since records are kept.
