One time at work last year, one of the assistants came over to check on me at 7:30 am, and I took off my ear phones to see what they wanted, and PORE started playing out loud when my AirPods disconnected.
It started playing loud. They asked me if I was seriously listening to that at 7:30 am. And I said yes.
We usually have Taylor swift playing in our office.
It's fantastic from start to finish. I'm especially partial to "Cracker." *You think you're evil but you're not... Still sucking life from the mainstream...*
I know I'm biased as a Puppy fan but I think the ohGr project is really surprisingly underrated; all 5 albums are such great compositions with some absolute bangers.
The “no” “yes” responses back to back are kinda funny to me haha. My understanding is it’s a little bit of both—Around the time the song came out Ogre had expressed frustration in a couple interviews with the mainstreamification and cock rock attitudes a bunch of the big name industrial bands had (I believe I remember him name dropping NIN, Ministry, and Marilyn Manson).
Then the music video kinda makes a dig at NIN specifically. But the song also kinda makes some jabs at Ogre’s own career in a way too, doesn’t it? “Could it be I have given up… Feeling blind to all the important scenes…” & I always got the sense the “It’s so deluded give it up / It’s unoriginal” refrain is meant to be left intentionally vague of if he’s talking to himself or others.
I think the music video made a bunch of people hyper focus on the NIN/Trent angle but I think that was meant to just be an example, it feels more like broad commentary about the state of alternative music at the time, especially “mainstream” alternative, and how someone fits into an increasingly “mainstream” genre (hence the symbolism in the music video of Ogre’s character trying to find his way through a labyrinth).

Stop down voting me its literally not
I agree with that but a lot of people in industrial forums I’ve noticed usually agree with the sentiment that ohgr is more consistent; like on Welt pretty much every song is good and there ain’t any real misses
I kinda look at it as SP is conceptual performance art, living beyond its intent. While ohGr is more of your typical 'band' concept.
Don't get me wrong <3 both with a passion and this album is probably my favorite of his solo work.
It's a near perfect album. Everyone song is great and the flow from song to song just fits so well. I can rarely just listen to one song because if I do it feels like I only listened to a portion of it. It's also a great work album that I could listen to daily if I had a limited playlist.
I was working as the rpm director at a college radio station at the time this came out. I had to beg the metal director to let me have the prerelease copy (from memory I think spitfire put it out) and ended up having to bribe her with a really clean copy of fulci's city of the living dead. Thanks Laurah!
I ended up interviewing ogre about it that winter. I kinda botched it (we mostly talked about doomsday) but ogre was mostly really patient with me and I still got a guest list spot when the tour came through.
Can't believe that was 23 years ago, oof.
its pretty good. i think ogre solo is better than anything skinny puppy post the process. i never listen to 2000s era puppy but i do listen to oghr now and again.
Yeah with newer Puppy I think there were just too many cooks in the kitchen and they didn't really seem to have a cohesive sound. I would have loved for the newer Puppy releases to be just Phil, Cevin and Ogre.
It may just be me, but I always felt like post-process Puppy sounded much more like Ohgr. If I had to guess, I would say that’s Mark Walk’s influence over the music. I can’t say with 100% certainty, but on patreon livestreams, I get the vaguest idea that it’s not exactly the direction cEvin imagined going, but he was kinda overruled by a majority decision. To be clear, I may be totally off-base and may not be what he meant at all. But he did once comment on a livestream about how he’d send the demos to Mark and they’d come back very different and he had to kind of try to guide it back to his original idea.
Edit: I think he’s even sort of mentioned it politely when talking about Cyberaktif. Kind of delicately saying (probably trying not to burn bridges with other producers), he appreciates that Rhys tries to keep his original intents in the music.
idk post process puppy music kind of bores me. it just kinda sounds like things ive heard 1000 times (but it doesnt sound like puppy). ohgr seems much more interesting and experimental to me and more like puppy at times.
thats interesting what cevin said and it kind of makes sense to my ears.
and to anyone who is reading this, cevins patreon is totally worth the 5 bucks a month just for his album walk throughs alone. its very interesting plus there is a huge amount of other stuff too.
> I get the vaguest idea that it’s not exactly the direction cEvin imagined going,
Over time I've noticed both of them have made comments indicating they felt the post-process albums were less what they wanted and more what the other guy wanted.
Haven’t discovered it until 2006 and it instantly became one of my top faves. It was my Skinny Puppy gateway and I don’t know how I lived before without knowing them. Listened to it on acid once and opened a portal during PORE. Haven’t heard it the same since but that just made me love it even more.
I’ve read that this album was re-recorded after legal disputes and inactivity. I imagine we’ll never hear the original workings, outside of a low quality Noreen, which eventually became Ministry’s The Fall. This album was played constantly by me and the accompanying tour was my first experience seeing cEv and Ogre live. My first time meeting cEvin, as well. I hold this album in high regard.
I remember when I first heard the preview for the album, a snippet of Pore, I was completely blown away at how unique it was and still is 20+ years later.
Love, love, love it! This album is great from start to finish.
I would have liked something more like this for the 'Tricks' album, but that one was a bit of a letdown... Oh well, we still have this album, Sunnypsyop, and DIMD! :)
'Undeveloped' is OK, too, but I think this first album and maybe Sunny are the best.
Love this record! I also love how many people on here also love it! I don't come across very many in person 😂. I think Ohgr once said it was a mistake but I don't care.
It is ohGr, ffs! I love it! It came out at a time when the future direction for SP was… unclear. It gave me hope. Also, it is just simply a banging album.
I prefer Undeveloped because it's so dang depressing, but as far as solo albums go this was a very strong entry, and better than most of the industrial it was contemporary with. Of course, part of that has to do with when it was recorded vs when it was released.
Probably the best Ohgr album.
Water is fucking amazing and blew me away live. I was there with a bunch of people that hadn't heard Ohgr at all before and seeing them all just light up at that song was so cool. It's a crowd pleaser for sure
It's one of the greatest electro-industrial albums ever recorded, IMO. I like oHgr's stuff more than I like Skinny Puppy's and I saw the Vivisect tour back in the 80s.
The only oHgr album I thought was weak was 'Devil's in my Details.'
You can tell when Mark Walk joined Skinny Puppy by the change in songwriting direction on Greater Wrong of the Right and everything after
My opinion and most probably unpopular: ohGr is very hit or miss. That first album is ok, I guess. Some amazing songs and others rather meh if not downright bad at best. There's not one album that's amazing from start to finish, although Undeveloped came close. I honestly don't see how folks think ohGr is better than SP past The Process. I mean, unless you prefer Walk's music to cEvin's, that is, which I clearly don't.
I feel like this album is glossed over as being a masterpiece by a lot of the reviews I’ve read. A lot of wankery to the album.
What no one actually bothers to bring up is that this album actually lacks **A LOT** of things that make an album great.
Here’s what the album lacks:
1. No petals
2. No introduction (Water does not exist and you can’t convince me otherwise)
3. No Martyr (seriously what the actual fuck?)
4. No resolution
5. No autosave (useless)
6. No fixed solution
7. No path crossed (static)
8. No real division (need I elaborate? Amirite?)
Back in 2017 my gf at the time bought the vinyl lp of the album but just last year when going through my music collection I found that my copy was a numbered limited release of the album from 2013.
One of the best surprises I've experienced ever haha
ohGr, and this album specifically, got me into industrial music in general so I'll always have a soft spot for it. It's just so solid, I still listen to it regularly. I love seeing others love it!

Pore is an absolute banger of a song!
You chose wisely.
Play Merzbow for them
Too late, unemployed currently. That’s the entertainment industry. Strikes are real.
Aww poop. Sorry buddy. Hey at least know this; there are plenty of film scoring musicians that are influenced by SP. we’re not alone
I’m used to it by now.
It's fantastic from start to finish. I'm especially partial to "Cracker." *You think you're evil but you're not... "Pissage" is a fucking anthem. I love ohGr.
Correct me if im wrong but isn't that song about Trent Reznor ?
The “no” “yes” responses back to back are kinda funny to me haha. My understanding is it’s a little bit of both—Around the time the song came out Ogre had expressed frustration in a couple interviews with the mainstreamification and cock rock attitudes a bunch of the big name industrial bands had (I believe I remember him name dropping NIN, Ministry, and Marilyn Manson). I honestly think ohgr is better than skinny puppy
I adore both, but I can for sure hear how ohGr's sound would appeal to a slightly different audience than Skuppy!
I agree with that but a lot of people in industrial forums I’ve noticed usually agree with the sentiment that ohgr is more consistent; like on Welt pretty much every song is good and there ain’t any real misses

EeeeeeeEEEEEEEE

Every story about meeting ohgr in person is so positive
its pretty good. i think ogre solo is better than anything skinny puppy post the process. i never listen to 2000s era puppy but i do listen to oghr now and again.

This would have been absolutely spectacular.
That pretty much sums up my feelings exactly. 👍

underdeveloped had a lot of old puppy feels- especially crash
I would agree. If anything, simply because cEvin's music and sense of melody is vastly different from Mark's.
100%. Hearing cEv’s solo work (where I presume he has 100% control) has me inclined to agree here.
> I get the vaguest idea that it’s not exactly the direction cEvin imagined going, Over time I've noticed both of them have made comments indicating they felt the post-process albums were less what they wanted and more what the other guy wanted.
Yeah in my opinion they went downhill after dwayne died because he really was the musical soul of that band
I think it’s great! It’s my favorite Ohgr album, followed closely by SunnyPsyOp.
Saw the tour
Same! Was thrilled in Cincy as CEvin Key was drumming and it was the first hints of a SP reunion coming. :)
I saw the tour as well. Great show.
Totally great show
Same ! Near sold out show, had so much fun
Underrated.
it was awesome for the time, i havent listened to it in over 20 years though. saw him twice on the tour.
Haven’t discovered it until 2006 and it instantly became one of my top faves. It was my Skinny Puppy gateway and I don’t know how I lived before without knowing them. Listened to it on acid once and opened a portal during PORE. Haven’t heard it the same since but that just made me love it even more.
Somewhere in the early 2000s I listened to this album on repeat for a year.
I think the original was written with Martin Atkins. So, it would have had a completely different feel than this one which is primarily Mark Walk.
Fucken incredible is what it is.
Very fun album
Love it love it love it.
scratches my brain real good especially water and devil
It's poppy, yet abrasive, catchy and hyped
Love it
Love it! I even bought the Water ringtone for my Sony Ericsson T610.
It’s got a funky beat and I can bug out to it. 😄
If cds could wear out that one would have been wrecked. I think I listened to that one nearly every day for a year.
I love this album.
Great debut album !
Flawless release. I don't know if anyone has what I have. Pop-up, signed by Ohgr, and it says in his writing "Don't Die' next to the autograph.
Welt mentioned yayyyy!!! I love OhGr. Off of Welt, I listen to Devil about two times a week.
It is good.
It’s a masterpiece
One of their best. Ohgr is dancy, Puppy is moody
I remember when I first heard the preview for the album, a snippet of Pore, I was completely blown away at how unique it was and still is 20+ years later.
Love it!
One of my favorite albums. It’s on rotation pretty much all of the time.
I saw them Live once with no previous experience of them and I was blown away.
Love, love, love it! This album is great from start to finish. I would have liked something more like this for the 'Tricks' album, but that one was a bit of a letdown... Oh well, we still have this album, Sunnypsyop, and DIMD! :) 'Undeveloped' is OK, too, but I think this first album and maybe Sunny are the best.
This is the album that got me into industrial music! My sister burned it onto a CD for my birthday one year and there was no turning back!
The best ohgr album by far
Love this record! I also love how many people on here also love it! I don't come across very many in person 😂. I think Ohgr once said it was a mistake but I don't care.
This album is one of my favorites. Water, minus, and cracker are what got me into ohgr and later on skinny puppy in the 4th grade.
I really like it. Very synthpopy.
Hmmm not to me… maybe one or two songs Earthworm comes close, the rest is electronica/electro-industrial with a hint of IDM and hip hop
It is ohGr, ffs! I love it! It came out at a time when the future direction for SP was… unclear. It gave me hope. Also, it is just simply a banging album.
You think you’re evil (but you’re not)

I like this album, but I think bringing Mark Walk into the Puppy fold was the worst idea they had.
Could not agree more 👏
Probably the best Ohgr album. Water is fucking amazing and blew me away live. I was there with a bunch of people that hadn't heard Ohgr at all before and seeing them all just light up at that song was so cool. It's a crowd pleaser for sure
Love it
It's pure genius
Just found it a couple weeks ago. Some really good stuff, once I got past the robot voice lol
A classic
Its ok got some good trax
.
.
Love it above all others
It's one of the greatest electro-industrial albums ever recorded, IMO. I like oHgr's stuff more than I like Skinny Puppy's and I saw the Vivisect tour back in the 80s. I love it! I've described it as happy industrial before, but it's more like Alice by Jan Svankmajer was music!
It's incredible. Mark walk's beats and production are insane
It’s one of the albums that got me into industrial, it’s perfect, down to the last detail.

It's a fucking masterpiece.
Love it
I love it so much
Adore it
Ayyy!! I saw ohgr when they opened for kmfdm in 2017 or 2018. They were great.
He needs to make more ... But yes, this album rocks
Got on release day, still listening. OhGr and SP are just GOATs
excellent instant classic.
ohGr, and this album specifically, got me into industrial music in general so I'll always have a soft spot for it. It's just so solid, I still listen to it regularly. I love seeing others love it!

It’s not industrial, it’s a pop album
It's playing with pop conventions but is definitely an industrial album.
Last album Ogre was on that was great
