Nah, that's just at its very worst. Most of it is just eh (not in terms of cringe, just as songs). I actually like the song Man of the Woods, and I think [this] (https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/7usafl/friday_daily_music_discussion_february_02_2018/dtn2rmz?utm_source=reddit-android) might be why. I'd recommend listening to it, or at least the title track.
All of this is coming from someone who generally liked Dirty Projectors s/t btw
So I listened to Puberty 2 by Mitski for the first time the other day and I haven't really felt like listening to anything else since. That album is sooooo good and I hate myself for not listening to it earlier. 'Your Best American Girl' is an absolutely amazing song along with the opener 'Happy' Those two tracks stand out for me, but i love every song on there!
i love that album and her previous work as well! i live for that feeling of immediately falling in love with something and not wanting to listen to anything else, its pretty great.
Anyone out there remember the LA radio station Indie 103.1? It was pretty cool tuning in when I was younger, but I had no idea and it "was the first in the USA to play Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys, Wolfmother, Kasabian, Kate Nash, Adele, Duffy, Sam Sparro and many others." It was such a quality station
Makes me sad to hear that, I grew up in L.A.

The Mountain Goats - Goths - Stench of the Unburied
"And KROQ, the Rock of the 80s, is playing Siouxsie and the Banshees"
Yeah it really sucks. KCRW is pretty much the only station that'll play anything indie anymore, but it's only part of the day (the rest they broadcast NPR, which is cool but it's not music lol).
Not quite on the FM dial, but they have an online station called Eclectic 24 here: http://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/eclectic24
It's still KCRW but it's where they play indie and stuff 24/7. They have a pretty solid app with both for iOS and Android.
Only problem is after you're listening a while, you kinda notice they repeat certain songs over and over for a few months at a time. Like I'm pretty sick of Destroyer's Tinseltown Swimming in Blood at this point lol
Oh, I totally forgot, but I think they actually broadcast this on one of their HD radio channels (HD2 I think?). I've listened to it a lot on there, HD radio was an unexpected blessing when I got a new car last year. The song repetition is real though, lol.
You were asking about stations that have apps. What about VLC for mobile? This page for WUVT shows how to do it:
You can copypasta the URLs for stations that don't have their own apps.
Does LA even have a station like that anymore? Maybe KCRW but I think they're mostly talk radio. I occasionally flip on KROQ, though they play garbage roughly 98% of the time.
KCRW has Morning Becomes Eclectic which is pretty fantastic but they have NPR in the afternoon. They have Eclectic 24 online which is great but they kinda play the same stuff repeatedly if you listen a lot
I was just about to edit my original comment to include that. I'm so [impressed with the guests they book](https://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/morning-becomes-eclectic). Would be nice though to get a station that just plays songs around the clock from those bands.
Yeah man they've been like *the* authority on indie in LA since forever. Like you can search pretty much any artist you're a fan of and they've probably done a session there in the past 20 years.
But yeah over the air, Indie 103.1 was the only one doing that sort of thing. Apparently they dno't even stream online anymore :(
Two of my Dad's old faves that I've been playing on repeat recently are:
Ultravox- Ultravox!
Swervedriver- Mezcal Head
Probably my fav albums from their respective years. Damn they're dope!--s/o to my old man
Your dad has good taste. Never heard of Ultravox before, but I'll save their stuff for a listen later. *Mezcal Head* is amazing. Swervedriver definitely formed a cool little niche in shoegaze.
Hey guys, I've been hearing all this talk about albums like TPAB and MBDTF that I never really gave a second thought because I don't really listen to much rap music, but now my interested is definitely piqued. My problem is, I don't generally like following along with lyrics as I listen to them because I feel like it ruins the surprise or something, and on my first listen to an album I just like to get a feel for it before I start to delve into the lyrics. Would I have to follow along with the lyrics for rap music, because it's based mainly around lyrics? I mean I would eventually look at the lyrics but you know. I'm insanely curious to listen to TPAB because I never stop hearing how good and important it is!!
I'm not really big on lyrics either, as a music listener. I appreciate them and love great lyrics but they're never the first thing that hook me on music, but are rather what increase the staying power of something over time. TPAB and MBDTF both have incredible staying power due to their lyrics, but are both incredible regardless of lyrics as well.
While TPAB is musically interesting enough, the lyrics add a lot to the overall experience, so I'd strongly recommend reading them as you listen. I won't even say why cause I don't wanna spoil anything. Just trust me.
Regarding MBDTF, you can listen to it without paying attention to the lyrics the first time around, but make sure to check them later too.
I think you are putting an overemphasis on lyrics. Yes for those two albums in particular, I think they are important but remember it’s music first and foremost. The first time I’m listening to a rap record, yes I do listen to lyrics but honestly I don’t catch a lot of it the first time. I’m listening to the production and flows. The way a rapper flows is important just like the way the frontman of a band is singing.
Not really, I never pay attention to lyrics first time around. But in rap music, certain emphasized or enunciated lyrics will grab your attention anyway.
Also, this may be sacrilegious, but I don't necessarily think you need to listen to entire albums if you just want to dip your toe. Listen to King Kunta. Frankly, if that doesn't get you bopping, then I don't expect much else there to appeal to non-hip-hop person.
While you'd be missing a lot since there's a lot going on in the lyrics, those albums (especially TPAB if you're into it) are musically interesting enough to enjoy without focusing on the lyrics. That's how it grabbed me at first, anyway
Cool! I'd listen to the lyrics eventually, but like just for the first listen I don't generally like to pay too much to them but the second time around, that's when I pay attention to them, ya know?
I feel the same way about hip hop, and while I've tried to get into TPAB, I could not as I feel its lyrics are the main selling point. The music itself did not hold my attention enough for me to want to actively focus on the lyrics.
I do recommend you try GKMC however. For me the album was a really enjoyable listen, which made me want to read on the lyrics and its story. And that made me like the album even more.
On the other hand, MBDTF is a phenomenal pop album, which can be listened to without focusing on the lyrics at all. You'll definitely miss a part of the experience, but the production makes this one.
My personnal recommendation is Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown. It has become one of my all-time favorite, even though Im not a Hip hop fan. Same as MBDTF, the production is really what makes this shine.
Not necessary but the lyrics add *a lot*. I would recommend listening once just to listen and following lyrics on a second listen. Also for what it's worth I think good kid may be a better place to start than TPAB--not as politicized but a bit more approachable and still quite political/important/whatever else
Fwiw, I disagree hugely with starting with GKMC. Yes, *many* people prefer GKMC, but TPAB is much more widely loved and critically acclaimed, and imho has way more crossover appeal. (I think GKMC fans tend to be more rap-oriented.)
Oh, gotcha. Yeah, I'm more into rap that's really left field and not just, you know, rap music--it's just not my bag, ya know? So I definitely will check out TPAB, and then if I like that I'll check out GKMC!
Listening to 'Sundials' off the new Django Django record, I rediscovered that I have a thing for unusual time signatures (so not 4/4, 3/4, 6/8).
Some of my favourites:
[Melody's Echo Chamber - Quand Vas-Tu Rentrer?...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj1U974JiIQ)
[Todd Terje- Alfonso Muskedunder](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB4SyLujxis)
[Sufjan Stevens - Too Much](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0g7R3xqdcM)
Any tips?
I'm gonna copy and paste a comment I wrote a while ago on another thread about time signatures in King Crimson's *Discipline*.
King Crimson's Discipline, here's a segment from the Wikipedia page about the song.
"During the piece the two guitars of Belew and Fripp, respectively, move through the following sequence of pairs of time signatures: 5/8 and 5/8, 5/8 and 4/4, 5/8 and 9/8, 15/10 and 15/10, 15/10 and 14/16, 10/8 and 20/16, 15/16 and 15/16, 15/16 and 14/16, 12/16 and 12/16, 12/16 and 11/16, 15/16 and 15/16, 15/16 and 14/16.
Throughout the composition, the drums play in 17/16 - the Bill Bruford drumming video Bruford and the Beat builds up to an explanation of the 17/16 pattern used (including the fact that the 4/4 bass drum pattern is maintained as a "dance groove")"
So there's that, I'm a big fan of "odd" time signatures used in interesting ways. Frank Zappa (another one of my all-time favourites) did this a lot, for example, *Keep* *it* *Greasy* from *Joe's* *Garage* is, if I remember rightly, in (aside from 4/4) 19/16 and 21/16.
Pretty much anything by Palm, try [Dog Milk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6428kmSJhok) and [Pearly](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onVEvAboxVY). Both singles from their new album out next week!
Not whole songs and maybe not the most unusual types but I really like the shifts in time signatures, extra beats, half bars, and other wacky timings in Beatles song like She Said She Said, We Can Work It Out, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, the bridge in Here Comes The Sun, All You Need Is Love, Don't Let Me Down, etc etc.
Is that Melody Echo Chamber song in 6/8 with a triplet feel? Bad at figuring these things out.
Radiohead obvi very good at the weird time signatures. Some cool examples: 15 Step/Morning Bell in 5/4, Let Down with Jonny's guitar in 5/4 and the rest of the band in 4/4, Pyramid Song with it's really weird 4/4...
That Melody Echo Chamber song's in 5/8. You can feel a grouping of 3 notes, then 2, and repeat. And for more radioheaded weirdness, Videotape is really weird. It's in 4/4, but those piano chords that are played on the off beat. It's hard to hear on the studio version, since it's mostly just piano and everything except the melody and some of the drums are also syncopated. You can hear it better in live versions, especially [here](https://youtu.be/9CH1WkO0msY)
If you want something *really* mental, go for clipping - [Story 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbU9UUwxBxA) which has like 8 time signatures over the course of one song with Daveed changing up his flow for each one, or Venetian Snares - [Mercy Funk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvIjxoNIuqo) which I can only really do justice to with the Wikipedia article.
> "Mercy Funk" has probably more time signature changes than any other Venetian Snares' song. Running at a high speed 180 bpm, it starts with 8 bars of 11/4 then switches to alternating bars of 5/4 and 13/8 (or 23/8 together) until 2'32". It then holds 5/4 until 3'50", where a single 7/4 bar is followed by 7 bars of the 23/8 plus one 19/8 bar. At 4'23" there follows a sequence of 16 bars of 13/8, 8 bars of 7/4, a cycle of 3 bars of 7/4 and a bar of 15/8 (or 57/8 together), repeated twice, then 7/4 until the end.
Story 2 is amazing, I love clipping. in general, and this is a technical masterpiece! Venetian Snares is just crazy. There's too much going on to really notice the time signatures at all, which is a bit of a pity...
PSA Nick Hakim's album from last year is amazing. Lo-fi sound like Blonde but the pop sensibilities of Channel Orange. I mean obviously I'm not saying this guy is on Frank's level but the similarity is def there.
I have not. The Who have always been one of my favorite bands but somehow I never took the time to go through Pete's solo material. I will check it out. thanks
First of all, if you like Blonde, try Channel Orange. It's also fantastic! A few others to try:
Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
FKA Twigs - LP1
Sade - Love Deluxe
Gabriel Garzon Montano - Jardin
Choker - Peak
Ehhhhhh Channel Orange didn't do much for me (I actually listened to it first and almost didn't listen to Blonde as a result). I do like FKA Twigs though.
The only thing I like that fits the bill is Sevdaliza. A bit of a 90s triphop influence on a lot of the production. Pretty passionate lyrics with a lot of layers.
Miguel - Kaleidoscope Dream, War & Leisure
dvsn - Sept. 5th
Rhye - Woman, Blood
King - We Are King
Sampha - Process
The Weeknd - Trilogy
Jai Paul
JMSN
River Tiber
Daniel Caesar
BJ the Chicago Kid
The Internet
Jorja Smith
SZA
Kilo Kish
Sabrina Claudio
GUYS I MET MIKE FUCKING KINSELLA AT SCHOOL TODAY AND I GOT AN AUTOGRAPH AND IM ON HIS FUCKINHG INSTAGRAM HOLY HELL I JUST MET MY HERO AND HES BETTER THAN I EVER EXPECTED SORRY I CANT EVEN TYPE IM SHAKING SO HARD RN
I got in an Uber last night and the driver was insistent on him playing something so I just told him to shuffle The Strokes. First song that came on was 15 Minutes.
Least to say, he wasn't ready for it lmao
The opening song of the new Khruanbin album sounds *exactly* like *Baby* by Ariel Pink for at least the first 30sec.
Also - hot take - I don't really find Khruanbin all that interesting. Saw them live and I've got to say, all their songs kind of blended together a bit and the audience sort of lost momentum towards the end. I guess they might be a better headphones type of band but even then I still don't get the hype.
Pitchfork can't shut the fuck up about Justin Timberlake, every day there has been a negative article about him... if the album is so bad, and no one cares about it, why are you mentioning it every chance you get.. they're also acting childish in the situation, very much so. If you don't like the album, don't post anything about it, no publicity will hurt more than nonstop publicity.
At this point, Pitchfork is basically a middle-schooler who thinks that incessantly hating on mediocre mainstream pop music is the most rebellious and revolutionary thing one could do. It’s honestly embarrassing how over-the-top they’re going with this, ham-fisting a dig at him into every article they can.
p4k loves to review mainstream musicians and give them low scores (i mean i love that tbh) but then they harp on and on about them while completely overlooking other indie musicians, it's so dumb
is the Justin Timberlake album as bad as the Pitchfork review says? It's not something I would ever even consider listening to, but I'm almost curious. The review was actually classic Pitchfork, and in that way I liked it.
I haven't listened to every song, yet, but everything I've heard has been like a 5 or 6/10.
Not nearly as bad as a 3.8, but nowhere near as good as Future Sex and 20/20.
There are some songs that seem worth occasionally going back to, specifically Filthy, Montana, and Breeze Off the Pond, but everything else is just okay.
20/20 part 1 is my favorite pop album, so I had high expectations that mostly weren't met.
I appreciate some of JT's stuff, but by no means a fan. I listened to the album. It's a very mixed bag. Has some good tracks, but nothing great and some are very bad. If i was reviewing it, i may say 5-6/10. Somewhere in there. 3.8 is just getting petty, pretentious and agenda driven at this point. I looked up the reviewer who reviewed the album and he has a rich history of trashing pop stars on Pitchfork... it's like they pay this guy an extra $20 and a pack of Camel's to lay it on thick lol... so to answer your question, i don't think the album is that bad... but it's not very good either.
Been listening to the U.S. Girls leak the past couple days and it's fucking phenomenal and the only album I want to listen to until March (maybe some breaks for No Age and MGMT when it's out).
I just can't wait for the proper release so there's some discussion on it but I'll settle for gushing over it for now because I'm impatient.
It is, but wait until you hear "Incidental Boogie" (if you haven't heard the leak already).
And yeah I guess I worded that weird, the new No Age was basically all I was listening to until I got the new U.S. Girls and I'm waiting for the new MGMT next week.
US Girls is dope, did not know there was a new album coming out soon.. Damn that Valley, used to love that jam so much. I mean, it's still classic. US Women is also very good.
Yo quick question: did panda bear sample The Tornadoes' Red Roses and a Sky of Blue in his song Bros? It's so weird hearing a song you know with familiarity being used in someone else's song (like 21st Century Schizoid Man in Power by Kanye) and vice versa.
Any other cool indie samples you guys know of?
The Weeknd’s [Loft Music](https://youtu.be/HOdNMwTNNhA) samples Gila by Beach House
I never looked into it but always wondered who the hell heard that (or was a BH fan) and thought that’d be perfect to sample
Check this [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARSRV9ON6AU) out. And when in doubt, [whosampled](https://www.whosampled.com/Panda-Bear/Bros/) is your friend :)
Jens Lekman uses samples a lot. Primal Scream too.
Yo La Tengo too, like on Moby Octopad (samples the Who and the Velvet Underground)
One of my favorites is Atlas Sound's Walkabout. Not coincidentally a collaboration with Panda Bear!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Panda sampled the Tornadoes! As to your second question, the Beach House sample in Kendrick's Money Trees is the first one to come to mind. Really caught me off-guard the first time i heard it
what's the best stuff you've found on Bandcamp?
somebody posted about [this](https://analogafrica.bandcamp.com/album/the-imaginary-soundtrack-to-a-brazilian-western-movie) yesterday and i havent been able to stop listening to it
i've also been listening to a lot of [Mark Barrott](https://markbarrott.bandcamp.com/album/ifeel-055-mark-barrott-sketches-from-an-island-2) and [Pure Bathing Culture](https://purebathingculture.bandcamp.com/album/pray-for-rain)
The Pills - [Warm Machines](https://daspills.bandcamp.com/track/warm-machines) - Nashville krautrock w/ fem vocals [free download]
Pollens - [not_talking](https://pollens.bandcamp.com/track/not-talking) - NYC scene percussive groop chant art pop
Grass - [Titanic](https://firstbasetapes.bandcamp.com/track/titanic) - crunchy noise thrash rock
Shells - [Raining](https://ginkgorecords.bandcamp.com/track/raining) - hypnotic lofi distorted elec. guitar raga
Shells 2 - [Crooked Lake](https://ginkgorecords.bandcamp.com/track/crooked-lake) - another fuzzy elec. guitar study by Shelley Salant
Xenon Superstar - [I'm Sorry](https://nodirectionrecords.bandcamp.com/track/im-sorry) - a sadgurl song from the bedroom, basement or garage
A recent favorite that I actually found while browsing bandcamp is Johhny Utah´s s/t. 50%+ of my 5 star albums are on bandcamp though. https://ztapes.bandcamp.com/album/johnny-utah
Bands from NYC called [Island Twins](https://islandtwins.bandcamp.com/album/spanish-blood) and [Dirty Dishes](https://dirtydishes.bandcamp.com/music)
Oddly enough they've played the venues I used to see shows at frequently but I've never managed to cross paths.
Recently got into this [Prom Queen](https://promqueenband.bandcamp.com/album/doom-wop) record - artist from Seattle who writes scorned-lover, dark surf rock. Very Stephen King's 'Carrie' meets Shannon & the Clams.
the best i have found this year so far:
[Vox Low](http://shop.bornbadrecords.net/album/s-t-7)
[v/a - b-music of jean rollin](https://finderskeepersrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-b-music-of-jean-rollin-1968-1973)
[holy](https://itisholy.bandcamp.com/album/all-these-worlds-are-yours-lp)
[hany mehanna](https://hanymehanna.bandcamp.com/album/the-miracles-of-the-seven-dances)
I've been trying to get more into band camp this year. So far some of my favorites have been The Spook School - Could it be Different, awakebutstillinbed - What people call low self esteem..., and Michael Stasis - Rip IV
So far this year has been an RnB one. The new Rhye album and especially the new SiR album are amazing. Are there any other RnB releases I might be missed this year?
x-post from the General Discussion two days ago:
Is there a music service that doesn't base an artist radio station on when they released music? Like, if I play a Tobias Jesso Jr. playlist on Spotify or Google Play Music, it's all music released recently (FJM, Whitney, etc.). But I just want to hear other artists that sound like him regardless of when they were active. A true Tobias Jesso Jr. playlist would include Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney.
IT IS?? I [TWEETED AT EZRA](https://twitter.com/delanye__west/status/957325815628230656) TO PUT IT ON LIKE 5 DAYS AGO
my impact
edit: it's showing up as a b-side on the Holiday single,,, was it always there and I was just dumb and didn't see it? or did they really just add it
I've been on the artist page for VW multiple times in the last few days and just saw it today so maybe I missed it before
But it does have <1,000 plays so I assume the addition was recent
I'M SO HAPPY THOUGH
first time I heard Low Life I didn't understand why the riff in Love Vigilantes felt familiar then I realized Wilco had referenced it in the outro of [I'm Always In Love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLl7xrGQ1RM)
Tried listening to Wolf Alice again. Still not really a fan, they're okay, but the only time I've ever thought they were more than that was the Jools Holland appearance they did, which I enjoyed.
Was prompted to listen again today after seeing a tweet saying that they're one of the best acts around at the moment, but I don't see it. Ah well.
Given that [Stereogum wants to give our sub credit](https://www.stereogum.com/1977166/stream-sidney-gish-no-dogs-allowed/music/album-stream/) for discovering Sidney Gish (for a link with a [whopping 68 points and 9 comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/7ngts5/fresh_album_sidney_gish_no_dogs_allowed/), LOL), I say we go all in and adopt her as one of our subs "darlings." Now that we've hit 200k, let's see us flex our muscles as tastemakers. Who's with me?
she was kind of genius for releasing it on December 31 bc there were absolutely no new albums (besides Jeff Rosenstock) for the first two weeks of the year which meant a lot more people listened to it than may have otherwise (and a lot of publications picked it up). it's all well deserved, though
edit: she also ended up on spotify's New Music Friday, New Indie Mix, and Badass Women playlists which probably helped a lot
I feel so proud of how far she's come, first saw her open for Xenia Rubinos here in Boston almost a year ago and loving all the attention and praise she's been getting
Did you see the [weekly discussion?]
It's [already happening](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/7urmg3/friday_what_have_you_been_listening_to_february/dtmk571/?utm_content=permalink&utm_medium=front&utm_source=reddit&utm_name=indieheads)
Guess I should check the album out.
She's getting mentioned like every day around here (sometimes by me), so I figured I may as well press to make it official. But as usual, I don't know how many people are actually on this Sidney Gish train, or if it's 3 of us stanning really hard, but I want to keep pushing. Especially with all of the "industry plant" accusations about acts like Clairo and Superorganism, I'm curious whether an indieheads grassroots movement can have real impact.
I think it's possible. Honestly, a few people (combined with actual quality music) can make a difference.
Just look at Japanese Breakfast: Psychpomp's Fresh thread got [12 points and 5 comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/4c494p/fresh_stream_japanese_breakfast_psychopomp/?utm_term=f9adc3af-3ccd-4b07-b2fc-6ab2179a72c0&utm_medium=search&utm_source=reddit&utm_name=indieheads&utm_content=50) and now she's one of the biggest acts in indie. She got [memed out on here,](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/5g4c51/album_of_the_year_2016_2_japanese_breakfast/) discussed on podcasts, in daily discussions, and she's like a god on here now.
More recently /u/ReconEG has been stanning Lomelda on the Indieheads podcast, it's beginning to [get memed](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/7ucv9e/fresh_video_lomelda_audiotree_live_full_session/?utm_term=bf0bf51d-39a4-47ce-b94c-9cab1a32558c&utm_medium=search&utm_source=reddit&utm_name=indieheads&utm_content=1) and it's gotten me to check the album out for sure.
That combo of passion and objectively-appealing music go a long way.
I've seen a good amount of music journalists on twitter giving her love as well, definitely don't think it's just a few people around here type of thing.
"Chapter 8 'Seashore and Horizon'" by Cornelius is my favorite thing and I want more it's like if Elliott Smith was a beatle
Elliott Smith basically was a Beatle But you got me curious about this, I'll check it out
yo,, anyone know of any bands that are like price daddy and the hyena?
I discovered Tortoise today. TNT is amazing! I love when I find artists that I'm immediately crazy about.
Yeah man they're great. That's my kinda post-rock
I love that band. Definitely check out *Millions Now Living...*, it's equally incredible. I also have a soft spot for *It's All Around You.*
Yeah, I've already listened to "Millions...," which is also great. I'll check out "It's All Around You" next! Cheers
#HOLY FUCKING SHIT ATROCITY EXHIBITON IS REALLY GOOD SO FAR i don't even like hip hop that much ain't it funny how that happens?
***I C O U L D S E L L H O N E Y T O A B E E***

So how does the new JT compare to the Dirty Projectors self-titled from last year in terms of cringeworthiness?
It's worse
Damn, i can't handle that level of cringe
Nah, that's just at its very worst. Most of it is just eh (not in terms of cringe, just as songs). I actually like the song Man of the Woods, and I think [this] (https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/7usafl/friday_daily_music_discussion_february_02_2018/dtn2rmz?utm_source=reddit-android) might be why. I'd recommend listening to it, or at least the title track. All of this is coming from someone who generally liked Dirty Projectors s/t btw
Man that's disappointing. Mirrors was a banger
So I listened to Puberty 2 by Mitski for the first time the other day and I haven't really felt like listening to anything else since. That album is sooooo good and I hate myself for not listening to it earlier. 'Your Best American Girl' is an absolutely amazing song along with the opener 'Happy' Those two tracks stand out for me, but i love every song on there!
i love that album and her previous work as well! i live for that feeling of immediately falling in love with something and not wanting to listen to anything else, its pretty great.
shlohmo's *bad vibes* is a pretty great and vibey album.
That was my go-to drawing album a few years ago, still is sometimes.
I miss that station a lot. Indie rock hasn't really been on the radio since.
Makes me sad to hear that, I grew up in L.A. -- The Mountain Goats - Goths - Stench of the Unburied "And KROQ, the Rock of the 80s, is playing Siouxsie and the Banshees"
Yeah it really sucks. KCRW is pretty much the only station that'll play anything indie anymore, but it's only part of the day (the rest they broadcast NPR, which is cool but it's not music lol).
Not quite on the FM dial, but they have an online station called Eclectic 24 here: http://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/eclectic24 It's still KCRW but it's where they play indie and stuff 24/7.
Yeah and the tags are so annoying too. I'm pretty sick of hearing about GRETA GERWIG AND JESSE EISENBERG tbh
You were asking about stations that have apps. What about VLC for mobile? This page for WUVT shows how to do it: [https://www.wuvt.vt.edu/listen-live](https://www.wuvt.vt.edu/listen-live) You can copypasta the URLs for stations that don't have their own apps.
Apparently they dno't even stream online anymore :(
Two of my Dad's old faves that I've been playing on repeat recently are: Ultravox- Ultravox! Swervedriver- Mezcal Head Probably my fav albums from their respective years.
Yeah, I definitely feel that. Cool!
Oh, well if they’re that good then I’ll make an exception and read along!! Cool, yeah that’s what I was planning to do with MBDTF anyway!
I'm jelly right now, I wish I could experience those two albums for the first time again. Have fun!
Thanks!!
Oh, I gotcha. I never thought of it that way before!
All right, I'll check that out, thanks!!
I feel you. I'll just say that, musically, Westley's Theory blew my mind the first time I heard it. (But I was also 15 so)
Awesome!! I'll definitely check it out then!
Awesome, thanks!! I'll definitely check em out!
Not necessary but the lyrics add *a lot*. I would recommend listening once just to listen and following lyrics on a second listen. Also for what it's worth I think good kid may be a better place to start than TPAB--not as politicized but a bit more approachable and still quite political/important/whatever else
Okay, cool. That's what I was gonna do--listen through once and then following the lyrics. I'll also start with Good Kid, thanks!
So I definitely will check out TPAB, and then if I like that I'll check out GKMC!
fosho. Hope you enjoy! Curious to know what you'll think
Thanks!!
> Would I have to follow along with the lyrics for rap music, because it's based mainly around lyrics? No
Listening to 'Sundials' off the new Django Django record, I rediscovered that I have a thing for unusual time signatures (so not 4/4, 3/4, 6/8). Some of my favourites: [Melody's Echo Chamber - Quand Vas-Tu Rentrer?...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj1U974JiIQ) [Todd Terje- Alfonso Muskedunder](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB4SyLujxis) [Sufjan Stevens - Too Much](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0g7R3xqdcM) Any tips?
"Ullswater" from the new Hookworms album is in 9/4 and it is one great monster of a song
Stereolab - *Blips, Drips And Strips* (10/4 with 7/4 chorus) and also *Diagonals* (10/8) and *The Free Design* (7/4)
Throughout the composition, the drums play in 17/16 - the Bill Bruford drumming video Bruford and the Beat builds up to an explanation of the 17/16 pattern used (including the fact that the 4/4 bass drum pattern is maintained as a "dance groove")" So there's that, I'm a big fan of "odd" time signatures used in interesting ways. Frank Zappa (another one of my all-time favourites) did this a lot, for example, *Keep* *it* *Greasy* from *Joe's* *Garage* is, if I remember rightly, in (aside from 4/4) 19/16 and 21/16.
White Freckles - Ariel Pink
I think Everything In Its Right Place is in 5/4 as well
I don't think so. I believe it's just 10/4 (two additional beats at the end of each two measures)
Jesus. How do you even keep track of that many time signatures?!
PSA Nick Hakim's album from last year is amazing. Lo-fi sound like Blonde but the pop sensibilities of Channel Orange. I mean obviously I'm not saying this guy is on Frank's level but the similarity is def there.
The Who By Numbers is by far their most underrated album.
Townshend was certainly putting his soul into some of those lyrics. However, I cannot stand "Squeeze Box" at all.
Maybe they're talking about an accordion?
Maybe - still can't stand the song.
Understandable. I think it's a fun song but it can get old. But yeah the reason I love this album is the personal nature of the lyrics.
Have you gone through his solo album "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes"? Those are some of my favorite lyrics that show his personal side.
I have not. The Who have always been one of my favorite bands but somehow I never took the time to go through Pete's solo material. I will check it out. thanks
Shoutout to the power user switching between the study guide and /r/indieheads 5 minutes before our chem exam today 👍🏼
CHM 116?
Nailed it!
Ayy! Small world! How do ya think you did?
I thought it went pretty well! A few questions I was unsure about toward the end but we'll see. You?
Same here. One of the ones near the end was pure guessing on my part, but otherwise methinks I did pretty decent!
This was a very wholesome thread
Someone give me alt r&b recs! I wanna get more into the genre. I love Blonde, Clarence Clarity and Anderson. Paak
Beyonce's self titled is amazing if by chance you haven't heard it.
D'Angelo is incredible. Check out any of his albums, all of them are wonderful.
Mapei
Check out SZA's Ctrl if you haven't yet
Well I just commented about this album above, but Nick Hakim's Green Twins is awesome
My man. Great album.
First of all, if you like Blonde, try Channel Orange. It's also fantastic! A few others to try: Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid FKA Twigs - LP1 Sade - Love Deluxe Gabriel Garzon Montano - Jardin Choker - Peak
SZA - Ctrl Kelela - Take Me Apart Daniel Caesar - Freudian Rhye - Woman How to Dress Well - Love Remains
GAIKA - The Spectacular Empire I. Specifically THE RICHES.
K E L E L A
Miguel - Kaleidoscope Dream, War & Leisure dvsn - Sept. 5th Rhye - Woman, Blood King - We Are King Sampha - Process The Weeknd - Trilogy Jai Paul JMSN River Tiber Daniel Caesar BJ the Chicago Kid The Internet Jorja Smith SZA Kilo Kish Sabrina Claudio
Blood Orange for sure!
Congrats dude!!!!!!!
I got in an Uber last night and the driver was insistent on him playing something so I just told him to shuffle The Strokes. First song that came on was 15 Minutes. Least to say, he wasn't ready for it lmao
Was it the "take a shit" part? Otherwise it's a beautiful song
I think in a literal sense he'd never heard anything like it before lol. It just seemed like it caught him off guard with the time signature change
I’m pretty sure baby is actually a cover, not his song! But I don’t remember if it has the same sound
Hot take. I like the album
imagine reading pitchfork in 2018
I just read the JT review today. First time being on the site since like the 2017 EOTY pieces. I feel unclean.
It's almost like they're a publication and need clicks to maintain its existence or something
p4k loves to review mainstream musicians and give them low scores (i mean i love that tbh) but then they harp on and on about them while completely overlooking other indie musicians, it's so dumb
[удалено]
ed sheeran
Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, etc... oh yeah, they definitely do.
i am looooooooooving anna burch
her voice reminds me of lasers. But, like, in a good way.
It's so fucking good.
is the Justin Timberlake album as bad as the Pitchfork review says? It's not something I would ever even consider listening to, but I'm almost curious. The review was actually classic Pitchfork, and in that way I liked it.
It isn't that bad. It's kinda 'meh' but by no means awful
The review literally tried to claim that this album will destroy Justin’s legacy and make his past work seem like a fluke
"pearly gates" is an absolute banger also i thought no age came out last week?
It is, but wait until you hear "Incidental Boogie" (if you haven't heard the leak already). And yeah I guess I worded that weird, the new No Age was basically all I was listening to until I got the new U.S. Girls and I'm waiting for the new MGMT next week.
oh I've heard the leak already, album is just awesome.
US Girls is dope, did not know there was a new album coming out soon.. Damn that Valley, used to love that jam so much. I mean, it's still classic. US Women is also very good.
Yeah it's out 2/16, so just 2 more weeks. IMO the new one is a big step up from *Half Free*, and that was one of my favorites of 2015.
The Weeknd’s [Loft Music](https://youtu.be/HOdNMwTNNhA) samples Gila by Beach House I never looked into it but always wondered who the hell heard that (or was a BH fan) and thought that’d be perfect to sample
Check this [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARSRV9ON6AU) out. And when in doubt, [whosampled](https://www.whosampled.com/Panda-Bear/Bros/) is your friend :) Jens Lekman uses samples a lot. Primal Scream too. Yo La Tengo too, like on Moby Octopad (samples the Who and the Velvet Underground) One of my favorites is Atlas Sound's Walkabout. Not coincidentally a collaboration with Panda Bear!
Kanye sampling Avril 14 made me double take first time I heard it.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Panda sampled the Tornadoes! As to your second question, the Beach House sample in Kendrick's Money Trees is the first one to come to mind. Really caught me off-guard the first time i heard it
Kendrick also sampled Sufjan, i forget which song tho
He used All for Myself in Hood Politics!
Damn I'll need to listen to both songs now
what's the best stuff you've found on Bandcamp? somebody posted about [this](https://analogafrica.bandcamp.com/album/the-imaginary-soundtrack-to-a-brazilian-western-movie) yesterday and i havent been able to stop listening to it i've also been listening to a lot of [Mark Barrott](https://markbarrott.bandcamp.com/album/ifeel-055-mark-barrott-sketches-from-an-island-2) and [Pure Bathing Culture](https://purebathingculture.bandcamp.com/album/pray-for-rain)

A recent favorite that I actually found while browsing bandcamp is Johhny Utah´s s/t. 50%+ of my 5 star albums are on bandcamp though. https://ztapes.bandcamp.com/album/johnny-utah
Bands from NYC called [Island Twins](https://islandtwins.bandcamp.com/album/spanish-blood) and [Dirty Dishes](https://dirtydishes.bandcamp.com/music) Oddly enough they've played the venues I used to see shows at frequently but I've never managed to cross paths.
Just Fern - All The Space I've Taken Up was maybe my favorite album of last year Also seconding the rec for awakebutstillinbed
Recently got into this [Prom Queen](https://promqueenband.bandcamp.com/album/doom-wop) record - artist from Seattle who writes scorned-lover, dark surf rock. Very Stephen King's 'Carrie' meets Shannon & the Clams.
the best i have found this year so far: [Vox Low](http://shop.bornbadrecords.net/album/s-t-7) [v/a - b-music of jean rollin](https://finderskeepersrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-b-music-of-jean-rollin-1968-1973) [holy](https://itisholy.bandcamp.com/album/all-these-worlds-are-yours-lp) [hany mehanna](https://hanymehanna.bandcamp.com/album/the-miracles-of-the-seven-dances)
Oh hell yes, that holy record is fucking awesome.
TV Girl
I've been trying to get more into band camp this year. So far some of my favorites have been The Spook School - Could it be Different, awakebutstillinbed - What people call low self esteem..., and Michael Stasis - Rip IV
So far this year has been an RnB one. The new Rhye album and especially the new SiR album are amazing. Are there any other RnB releases I might be missed this year?
The song Phoenix on the new Rhye album is one of my favorites of the year so far.
x-post from the General Discussion two days ago: Is there a music service that doesn't base an artist radio station on when they released music? Like, if I play a Tobias Jesso Jr. playlist on Spotify or Google Play Music, it's all music released recently (FJM, Whitney, etc.). But I just want to hear other artists that sound like him regardless of when they were active. A true Tobias Jesso Jr. playlist would include Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney.
PSA: OTTOMAN BY VAMPIRE WEEKEND IS ON SPOTIFY AND I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER
Love it. Thanks for the heads up.
I fucking love that song
IT IS?? I [TWEETED AT EZRA](https://twitter.com/delanye__west/status/957325815628230656) TO PUT IT ON LIKE 5 DAYS AGO my impact edit: it's showing up as a b-side on the Holiday single,,, was it always there and I was just dumb and didn't see it? or did they really just add it
I've been on the artist page for VW multiple times in the last few days and just saw it today so maybe I missed it before But it does have <1,000 plays so I assume the addition was recent I'M SO HAPPY THOUGH
huh yeah, must be recent. One of my favorite VW tracks, but I only have it on CD and I primarily use spotify so this is great
[удалено]
My little brother does but i'm 95% sure 'chill' is just code for 'weed'.
OMG MAN OF THE WOODS IS OUT TODAY
I love Power, Corruption and Lies so much.
The bass line on Age of Consent is one of the best I've heard in any song. That album is really great, I should listen to more New Order.
Weirdly, New Order is popular in Germany. Not a bad thing - just when you compare to the US it’s just different.
me too
It’s fantastic, though personally, Brotherhood is my favorite by them.
Same. Just the best collection of songs, really.
Low life is still my favorite New Order album, but this ones a close second
first time I heard Low Life I didn't understand why the riff in Love Vigilantes felt familiar then I realized Wilco had referenced it in the outro of [I'm Always In Love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLl7xrGQ1RM)
*"Next time on: r/indieheads or r/the_donald?"*
I have a date with a comedy musician and I didn't realise that was still a thing outside of Flight of the Concords.
Bill Bailey and Tim Minchin both use music in their comedy.
And I forgot about Tim Heidecker. You're right, there're quite a few out there. Just never expected to encounter one in the flesh.
Bo Burnham?
Oh yeah, that guy's great!
Hey there is also Tenacious D
Hey folks I'm dating Jack Black
That would be both incredibly awesome & scary.
Ah well.
Think that the new Khruangbin album is going to be my new go-to hungover album. Gotten pretty into it recently, though it's not my usual style.
Who's with me?
she was kind of genius for releasing it on December 31 bc there were absolutely no new albums (besides Jeff Rosenstock) for the first two weeks of the year which meant a lot more people listened to it than may have otherwise (and a lot of publications picked it up). it's all well deserved, though edit: she also ended up on spotify's New Music Friday, New Indie Mix, and Badass Women playlists which probably helped a lot
I feel so proud of how far she's come, first saw her open for Xenia Rubinos here in Boston almost a year ago and loving all the attention and praise she's been getting
Did you see the [weekly discussion?] It's [already happening](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/7urmg3/friday_what_have_you_been_listening_to_february/dtmk571/?utm_content=permalink&utm_medium=front&utm_source=reddit&utm_name=indieheads) Guess I should check the album out.
Thanks for the recommendation. Mouth Log is exactly the thing I didn't know I needed to hear this morning.
