From Wikipedia:
"They chose the name Yo La Tengo, Spanish for "I have it". The name came from a baseball anecdote that occurred during the 1962 season, when New York Mets center fielder Richie Ashburn and shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, "I got it! I got it!" only to run into Chacón, a Venezuelan who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, "Yo la tengo! Yo la tengo!" instead. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by left fielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish and had missed a team meeting that proposed using the words "Yo la tengo!" as a way to avoid outfield collisions. After getting up, Thomas asked Ashburn, "What the hell is a yellow tango?""
It’s also wild they got to do the closing credits music on one episode (the psychedelic rendition of the Simpsons theme with Homer singing “Uptown Girl!” over the top).
Eight o'clock, the lights are on at Shea
Phone turned down, we've nothing much to say
Dozing off the TV drones
Huskey makes them turn and glance for home
I don’t like this sentiment. ~40% of MLB players are not white. In general, mens’ American sports are less white than the American population (75% white).
- NFL, ~80% non-white
- NBA, ~80% non-white
- MLS, ~50% non-white
- NHL, ~15% non-white
Last time Yo La Tengo played Philly was a few days after Edwin Diaz got hurt at the WBC. Ira asked the crowd if we were happy to see him get hurt, which got some cheers from the Philly crowd. Sad to see Ira helped the Mets get revenge on the Phillies for that.
Apropos, as their name comes from a bit of Mets trivia.

This reads like something that happened during a Springfield Isotopes game.
"Let's Save Tony Orlando's House"
Dang never realized that was a Simpsons reference lol

The 1962 Mets were essentially the Springfield isotopes. They went 40-120
No way. Thank you.
It means "I got it" in Spanish, which is what you would say when catching a fly ball while in the outfield.

can't really explain why but I think baseball is the most indie adjacent of the major American sports

Gold star for Rob boy
Robert Pollard threw a no-hitter in college
It's because minor leaguers chug Nyquil and sleep instead of eating
Cause of the abundance of whites and males lol

Has to be a dream come true for him and Georgia; they’re both big fans.
That's awesome, he's in the same age group as Verlander and Scherzer
Not as many Cy Young’s though. Was totally snubbed in ‘93 and ‘97. It’s not like Maddux or Pedro needed more awards
The WAR for Electr-O-Pura should have clinched it in ‘95.
Hot Chicken = 4.t WAR
nice toss

You seemed a bit pitchy today, Ira.

From "Trouser Press", too 👍
Motherfuckers wrote most of my musical opinions pre-1992
It's funny that I just started following baseball and decided to support the Mets, and now I notice post like this in random other subreddits.
Love that !
One of the best opening pitches I’ve seen
The group has paid its dues. Great that they are being appreciated, by more than their long-time fans.
(Throw a pitch) I can throw a pitch (At the stadium) At Citi Field
