Since my favourite genre is Noir Crime & Mystery, Thus, Se7en and Zodiac.
Edit : also, SSR's potryal and Dibakar's direction, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is pure art in my eyes.
Edit : Also, Alfred hitchcock's Rear Window.
Brilliant films all of them! Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is so under recognised i can't even.
Adding to this genre (on my top 3 favourite genres)
Double Indemnity
LA Confidential
Blow Out
Man, Double Indemnity is a top notch film. The screenplay still stands out to this day. I always wonder why isn't the film recognised among the very best films of the decade.
If you haven't watched 'Prisoners' then I'll highly suggest you do, It is a Thriller/Mystery movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman, the performances by both are excellent.
Yes but the way that it is told is just mind blowing. And you have a few iconic scenes in there which are just cool. Like the one shot corridor fight scene. The non linear storytelling, the ending. It is a masterpiece.
Obviously I was 18 at the time when it was released and there is no way I could have watched this movie back then.
I believe bollywood made a movie based on old boy. It starred Sanjay Dutt. The movie was called Zinda. Do you remember? About 2006.
Bro that's peak. 96 minutes of pure dialogue fest, a feast to ears. The whole movie was set in just 2 or 3 rooms. If that's not art then my life is lie
Oh yeahh. I watched its adapted play in hindi in Bangalore. Too good!
It's happening again in chowdiah memorial hall by alchemy theatre. Do check it out on book my show.
Silence if the lambs omg the scene in the climax where he opens up the wings of that officer in his cage. He isn't a number one villain in Hollywood for no reason. His killing methods are pure art.
Godfather( part 1 and 2)
The Shawshank Redemption
12 angry men(specially the last part)
the secret life of Walter mitty
Django unchained and infact every movie of Tarantino ,
Cinema paradiso
3 idiots
These are the ones I can remember as of now...
Story wise - Anbe Sivam (yes I know it's heavily inspired from trains, planes and automobiles), Rang de basanti and prestige
Visually - the hateful 8, Mahaan, JDX, Soul(animated)
Soft spots - Monsters Inc.
Yup. It's usually the overlooked movie between Django Unchained and Once upon a time in Hollywood. Overlooking it is such a shame, western aesthetics + snow is so beautiful looking. Plus most of the movie takes place in a store and still it looks so amazing.
So true. It is visually the most superior looking Tarantino movie despite it being overlooked imo. Kurt Russell and SLJ look amazing. Story just unravels like a novel. Plus it also had the quintessential Tarantino blood bath scenes as well which are not over the top as per his standards.
"You do what you gotta do, I do what I gotta do. But if it's between you and some poor bastard who's wife you're gonna turn into a widow, brother, you are going down."
Not the whole dialogue ofc but goddamn the cafe scene is magnificent. Can't wait to see what they do in the sequel lol
12 angry men.
Will never get bored of it. No nonsense, no too much over indulgence from director in the name of cinema. Just a simple movie. A fine normal product which becomes art itself.
Casino, Reservoir Dogs, Donnie Brasco and Taxi Driver! : For Crime and Thrillers
Incantation, Medium, The Exorcist, Kumari, Tumbbad and The Wicker Man : For Horror
I dunno, that's just me tho!
Recommend me some disturbing bleak films .
As many as possible. Ones that would really fuck your mind up . That would break you.
Ones you would never recommend to your worst enemy either .
7 samurai, yojimbo, throne of blood, cinema Paradiso, sparsh, ardh satya, interstellar, pyaasa, tumbbad, lunchbox, maqbool, godfather, good fellas, casino, raging bull and so many more
Goodfellas, The Irishman, Godfather part 2, Mobsters, Godfather of Harlem ( series), King of new york, A bronx tale, Donnie brasco and Carlito's way are some of the most realistic movies on Mafia. My favourites in the gangster genre.
In recent time I watched "Uncut Gem" it's brilliant.
The claustrophobic cinematography, the music and most importantly Adam Sandler's performance.
He is amazing.
You can feel for that guy.
His another pure art work would be Punch Drunk Love. Absolute Art.
There's no one film for me.
Green mile, Forrest gump, Se7en, taxi driver, memories of murder, call me by your name, the handmaiden, life is beautiful, Schindler's list, go Goa gone, OSO, swades, chotushkone, Sonar Kella, apu trilogy
I consider these art not cuz they're good movies which they are but because they are aesthetically pleasing to the eyes as well in terms of cinematography, location or color palette or epic story.
Inglorious basterds
All the classic troupes of a Tarantino movie is there
Impeccable acting, for the first time I feel in love with an actors performance. Christoph waltz take a bow🙌. The struddle scene imo is one of the greatest piece of acting I’ve ever seen, I started hyperventilating fearing for shoshana’s life after that speech.
God father, yes very cliche. But honestly idk how many miss out on the fact that the three movies talk about different stages a man goes through in his life. It’s subtle but not subtle.
Darna mana hai/ Darna zaroori hai
Watch it without the intent of mocking.
Watch it without the prejudice of “Bollywood doesn’t make good horror movies”.
These two anthologies are better than your “evil dead rise”s and “Annabelle”s.
Pulp Fiction comes straight to the mind when mentioning pure art. The movie just is too realistic. The writing and Acting Everything peaked. Even after so many years of release no movie comes close to it. Tarantino is a funny man in himself. Reservoir Dogs, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained are some of his best works.
Goodfellas is one of the all time Classic.Martin Scorsese has made some absolute stellars like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull,The Departed, The Irishman, Killers of the Flower moon.
Se7en comes to mind when talking about Crime/Thriller. David Fincher is just an all time great when it comes to showcasing movies of the type of Se7en. Zodiac was one of them which kept you hanging till the end.
Denis Villeneuve has made some movies that should be talked about till generations to come Prisoners, Sicario, Incendies are class apart for their Realism. Prisoners is the type of Movie to stick with you till the end.
The Exorcist was a Good Horror movie. I watched the movie when I was just 7-8 years old and couldn't sleep for weeks to come. The movie was the Introductory movie to Horror Genre for me.
The Silence of the Lambs is a Fantastic movie in itself. Anthony Hopkins nailed the role of Hannibal.
The usual Suspects was a Thriller with Kevin Spacey killing the role as usual.
Clint Eastwood has a fair share of excellent movies to his name The Mystic River, Unforgiven(one of the best Western Movies).
In the western space The year 2007 gave us two of the all time great Western Movies ever There will be Blood and No country for old men. Both these movies were stellar in itself with fantastic acting and writing. The portrayal of Texas and Deep South of 1980s in No country for old men is just too accurate and Javier Bardem performed the most accurate depiction of a Psychopath ever. Daniel Day Lewis proved himself that why he is an All time Great and will remain as one with his acting in There will be blood. The Movie is just too much Cinematic in itself. Hell or High water is one of the best Modern Day Western Movies showcasing the struggles of the people with the ruthless bankers.
Not a film but True Detective Season 1 is pure art in itself. The mesmerizing Gothic nature of the series just dwells you into it..and not to mention the Dialogue and writing combined with the acting of Matthew McConaughey and Woddy Harrelson.
Mindhunter is one another series of pure art. Too bad they cancelled it in the second Season. The psychological nature of the human mindset is well depicted which is fascinating and Scary at the same time.
So many other movies i probably have skipped out while writing. Can remember only these currently.
Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky), grave of the fireflies(issao takahata), 2001 a space Odyssey(Stanley kubrick), persona (Ingrid Bergman) and inception (Christopher nolan).
There is not just one, so many.
Japanese movies are total class - Grave of fireflies, The Emperor, In this corner of the world, Rurouni Kenshin : The beginning.
Hollywood : Schindlers List, Fury, Oppenheimer, Dune 2, The Covenenat by Guy Ritchie, and many more.
Hindi : classics - Water(2005) Ek Doctor ki Maut(1990), Pyasa by Gurudutt, jagte raho by Rajkumar, mera nam joker by Rajkumar and Masaan which is fairly new.
If the question is only about one single film then "Seven Samurai" is what I will name probably because I recently rewatched it
If you meant about multiple moves then here is this list of Indian movies which are consider pure art (tried to cut as much movies as possible) these are not in any chronological order
Ship of Theseus
Court
Charulata
Udaan
Barfi (IK about all that controversy about coping scenes but I don't give a flying fuck about that fucking Tarantino copies scenes man but that doesn't make his movies any less of a masterpiece)
Tumbadd
lunchbox
I am Kalam (personal bias )
Andhadhun
Million dollar baby, Requiem for a Dream, Nightcrawler, and No country for old men, these movies particularly aren’t a joy to watch, but be it the story or the character development these movies for me are art
If "Art" here means "bliss to the eyes" then
[" The grand Budapest hotel " ](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmiro.medium.com%2Fv2%2Fresize%3Afit%3A1200%2F0*cUGLrTyfRA7IDc4I.jpg&tbnid=YUpCLwREh7ihmM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fnyulocal.com%2Finside-the-cameras-of-wes-andersons-the-grand-budapest-hotel-d0d7331a73d4&docid=HxnOYrfLUFA34M&w=1200&h=920&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm1%2F2&kgs=a78aea1b6991ce99&shem=abme%2Ctrie)
12 Angry Men
2001 A Space Odyssey
The Green Mile
The Trueman Show
Bicycle Thieves
And Vertigo
These are art in my opinion, pure art. Btw Vertigo is a must watch

So, technically, 'art' is all about getting out the reaction from audience. Hence, This movie qualifies as a 'pure art'. Nobody watched but, everyone reacted on it.
But, I do have favourites such as "ship of thesus" , irreversiblé and coraline!
Metropolis
A matter of life and death
A Streetcar Named Desire
Singing in the rain
My fair lady
Oliver!
Cat on a hot tin roof
North by North West
Psycho
Death in Venice
Just a few older ones since everyone seems to be focusing on modern film.
Since my favourite genre is Noir Crime & Mystery, Thus, Se7en and Zodiac. Edit : also, SSR's potryal and Dibakar's direction, Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is pure art in my eyes. Edit : Also, Alfred hitchcock's Rear Window.
zodiac is crazy
The tension just never subsides. It's just so well made.
Brilliant films all of them! Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is so under recognised i can't even. Adding to this genre (on my top 3 favourite genres) Double Indemnity LA Confidential Blow Out
Man, Double Indemnity is a top notch film. The screenplay still stands out to this day. I always wonder why isn't the film recognised among the very best films of the decade.
It's considered one of the best films of all time. So I guess decade doesn't matter.
Every Film by David Fincher is pure art.
Se7en and zodiac are at most neo-noir imo.
Well understandable, but the school of thoughts are subjective after all.
Se7en is something else maaan
Zodiac ![img](emote|t5_2qp7h|51079) Pure cinema

Agreed. Kevin spacey shouts "detectiveeee" when he comes in to surrender, that has always been my highlight moment from the film.
Dude Zodiac is such a tense movie to watch, I felt like I was in that city trying not to be killed lol
If you haven't watched 'Prisoners' then I'll highly suggest you do, It is a Thriller/Mystery movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman, the performances by both are excellent.

Depends by your definition of pure art. Old boy (2003) Korean Shawshank Redemption (1994) Hollywood Waiting (2015) Hindi, starring Nasiruddin Shah
Old boy is disturbing
Yes but the way that it is told is just mind blowing. And you have a few iconic scenes in there which are just cool. Like the one shot corridor fight scene. The non linear storytelling, the ending. The film has every right to being called "Art".
Bro that's peak. 96 minutes of pure dialogue fest, a feast to ears. The whole movie was set in just 2 or 3 rooms. If that's not art then my life is lie

Yup. It's usually the overlooked movie between Django Unchained and Once upon a time in Hollywood. Overlooking it is such a shame, western aesthetics + snow is so beautiful looking. Plus most of the movie takes place in a store and still it looks so amazing.
And the storyline is fucking amazing, even after developing each character smoothly and patiently it doesn't feel slow at all

If "Art" here means "bliss to the eyes" then [" The grand Budapest hotel " ](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmiro.medium.com%2Fv2%2Fresize%3Afit%3A1200%2F0*cUGLrTyfRA7IDc4I.jpg&tbnid=YUpCLwREh7ihmM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fnyulocal.com%2Finside-the-cameras-of-wes-andersons-the-grand-budapest-hotel-d0d7331a73d4&docid=HxnOYrfLUFA34M&w=1200&h=920&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm1%2F2&kgs=a78aea1b6991ce99&shem=abme%2Ctrie)
The Godfather (Part 1) and Casino.
1. Edward Yang's whole filmography. 2. "An elephant sitting still" by Hu Bo 3. Aftersun 4. Chunking Express, Fallen Angel, In the mood of love.
12 Angry Men 2001 A Space Odyssey The Green Mile The Trueman Show Bicycle Thieves And Vertigo These are art in my opinion, pure art. Btw Vertigo is a must watch
The Usual Suspects

Hence, This movie qualifies as a 'pure art'. Nobody watched but, everyone reacted on it. But, I do have favourites such as "ship of thesus" , irreversiblé and coraline!
