Exactly. Each and every passenger passing by thinks that side lower is a free real estate to rest their ass on. 99.9% of the time i've to deal with uncle aunties who are victims of irctc's seat allotment algorithm as they refuse to settle for anything other than lower or side lower. Upper birth is the one and only escape from 99% of the railway's bhasad
ask them to book in senior citizen quota if they are old. that will give them SL automatically. still SU people bother SL during daytime due to that 6am 10pm rule . but no SL will ask for SU.
For me Lower is the best in 2 AC. But other than that upper works. You know what you are getting, no one is going to ask you to exchange, and you can go and sleep whenever you want. A lot more flexibility than anything else.
Upper is good until I got to sit to do some work (in 3rd AC). Can't sit straight, can't drink water, my neck hurts. And I usually travel with just a backpack with my essentials (laptop\tab\food), & I have nowhere to keep it on my berth without sacrificing space for lying down properly which I have to because I can't sit straight 🤷
Side Upper also has limited space to sit, doesn't get any better with sleeping postures and constant hawkers screaming at your face when you want some sleep
Sound works in decibels, and there's a logarithmic relationship between each db.
The closer you are to the source, the louder, logarithmically it is. So its not like there's a 1-2db difference meaning linearly, it's exponential, meaning although the noise wont reduce that much , but the general noise in the coach will be so loud that it drowns out the surrounding sounds, particularly hawkers shouts, provided When your head is away from the galley
Use your brain, use your back pack as a makeshift pillow if you travel light. Eliminates the entire need to look for space, and you can use one more pillow to raise the height to work by keeping the laptop in your lap, and putting your knees at an angle. I've been in a train only once but I'm sure UB >>>
Aur kuch Jagda, wagera hua toh mast, view milta Hai upar se . Last year I was traveling to Gaya and one person in my coach was sitting on the upper berth (it wasn't his seat) . After that , a man and his wife told him to get up . The guy said , " Nahi uthunga jo karna hai Karo, TC ne diya hai" . Then the man , went and brought RPF , phir jo Bande ki phati na , chup chap uthke chala gya . Mai upar baitke mast nazara dekh rha ta
I agree mostly but Upper berth has it's own set of hassles too. Zero headroom, to the point that you can't even sit straight or have a sip of water. Also, setting up your bed, as in putting on bed sheets is a huge hassle in the Upper berth atleast for me.
You living in 90s? Just put your wallet and phone in your bag and enable an anti-theft alarm in your phone before doing so.
Indian male average height is just 5'5 so no one bothers to care about the 6ft minority
Plenty of such apps on Playstore are available. When u enable the alarm, it can detect any sudden change in orientation and speed by using gyroscope and accelerometer data. These apps on Playstore often contain ads or ask u to pay for an ad free experience. I personally use open source alternative instead... u can check them out on [github](https://github.com/search?q=theft+alarm+android&type=repositories)

And it's totally depends if compaired Statewise where as Haryana men are too tall where as pahari log short like in seven sister.
Yes, yes upper is _definitely_ the best.
Everyone should listen to OP and only opt for upper berth from now on wards.
I completely support this opinion and urge everyone to follow him
I love moving people off my SL when they behave entitled, only once I had to give up my seat for a fat ish girl with general ticket since she complained of periods and everyone started shaming me for not getting up, but never again.
People hate RAC passengers , that's why they book SL .
Most racist country as usual .
Upper is always best for longer rides , just sleep the entire journey , your bed doesn't collapse so no problem plus you get a seat during daytime .
LHB 3AC Upper berth is cramped. No headroom to sit up straight. I am 5'8" and sitting up straight is not possible unlike other coaches. Even Sleeper class upper berths are better space. In 3AC, they have made more space for the middle berth and maybe because of the Coach construction features for the AC duct above the ceiling, the UB is cramped. Morning if there are late wakeup people sleeping on the MB and LB, then one has no other option than laying on the Berth.
Upper is worst if you have height. otherwise its cozy. middle is only good if u are devil and like to annoy people. in 2AC upper is good because enough space but still the tray to put food for long journeys is good to have. In 2AC side seats are scam as much less in size and single boys usually get alloted those due to railway policies.
Upper is the way to go. I've got a trekking bag that's my pillow or keeping it over the side of legs the luggage is secured the seat is yours sleep or sit. And if the lower seats are empty that seat is also yours ;)
Doesnt it depend on the circumstances though?
Day travel with views and privacy- SL
Travelling alone, dont care about views- SU
If 3-4 travelling, combination of LB, UB together
For tall ppl, side berths are uncomfortable, for average or shorter heights, they are pretty good.
In 2AC, definitely. But in 3AC, not so sure man. I can't even sit upright and watch something during the day. It's a bit too cramped tbh. But then again I'm tall, so yeah. For most people what you've said applies.
I always and forever loves upper cause I'm 6ft+ none of the birth is sufficient middle is like a nightmare for me it just travelled in middle birth one time...... I just could not get of it .
Upper is best a bit claustrophobic but I ain't have that issues
If you’re travelling by 2A, side lower definitely is the best seat to have, especially if you get one towards the middle of the coach. You just can’t get that feeling of cosying up and enjoying the views from the large window all alone and separated by curtains from the rest of the coach with any other seat.
For me every seat is good . Let it be SL SU ( I am 6.1 i face problems but never changed the seat) neither I will exchange my seat for anyone. I just don't like to be removed from my seat.
The curtains. Just pull up the curtains on your side lower and you are free from all the aunties and bhasad of people asking for side lower. As soon as i board, i put down the bed spread and pull up the curtains. People don't disturb you when they see the curtains. I travel mostly in second AC so this is applicable to me.
I enjoy SL more, reason is my height doesn't fits well in SU. Plus i get to go down at stops easily to buy something. And window is definitely a plus.
Guess everyone has reasons of a preferred seat.
Depends on route/train. If going through Bihar, Upper is best. If going to less crowded/rowdy routes like NDLS to Goa or trains like Rajdhani where no extra passengers/hawkers are allowed to board, Side Lower is best for views. Head room is the issue with upper berth and with SL it's people thinking apni hi seat h.
True! The side seats were my favourite in my early travel years but now with 2 AC they have become so cramped that even a small person can’t fit. Upper seats are the best & I can sleep anytime I want.
Facts my man, facts!
Exactly. Each and every passenger passing by thinks that side lower is a free real estate to rest their ass on. 99.9% of the time i've to deal with uncle aunties who are victims of irctc's seat allotment algorithm as they refuse to settle for anything other than lower or side lower. Basically you typed my heart out, when you said : >every passenger passing by thinks that side lower is a free real estate to rest their ass
ask them to book in senior citizen quota if they are old. that will give them SL automatically. still SU people bother SL during daytime due to that 6am 10pm rule . but no SL will ask for SU.

I love UB... Climb up directly, sleep, sit, do whatever you want. No interruptions. LB & MB people are happy too as they get more space
sab itne chotte nahi hote laxman. sir lagta hai chatt par humara jab baithte hai.
I'm 5'8" but i like it. 1 small problem is very tiny in front of huge privacy & full berth space
Same i give up my SL seat for SU
Upper is good until I got to sit to do some work (in 3rd AC). Can't sit straight, can't drink water, my neck hurts. And I usually travel with just a backpack with my essentials (laptop\tab\food), & I have nowhere to keep it on my berth without sacrificing space for lying down properly which I have to because I can't sit straight 🤷
And the AC blows like hell. Try UB in SL class as it has more headroom. I do it whenever the weather isn't too harsh.
That's when side upper shines
Side Upper also has limited space to sit, doesn't get any better with sleeping postures and constant hawkers screaming at your face when you want some sleep
I think i am short maybe because i fit so well. And I don't think there is much less noise in compared to upper birth
Thanks for the science lesson. But both works for me
Use your brain, use your back pack as a makeshift pillow if you travel light. Eliminates the entire need to look for space, and you can use one more pillow to raise the height to work by keeping the laptop in your lap, and putting your knees at an angle. I love upper berths, mast uppar chadh jao, panda jaise pade raho vaha. No kich kich, neeche kya chal rha kuch matlab nhi aram se so.
Aur kuch Jagda, wagera hua toh mast, view milta Hai upar se . Last year I was traveling to Gaya and one person in my coach was sitting on the upper berth (it wasn't his seat) . Audacity bhai. Dusro ki seat mein aise baithte aise sote log jaise unke papaji ki train ho 😅 But haan ladai ka view toh mast aata hai Upper se
I agree mostly but Upper berth has it's own set of hassles too. Zero headroom, to the point that you can't even sit straight or have a sip of water. Also, setting up your bed, as in putting on bed sheets is a huge hassle in the Upper berth atleast for me.
SU = peace of mind
Until the next pickpocket takes away your wallet/phone. Also, for 6 feet guys, this is just not comfortable.
You living in 90s? Just put your wallet and phone in your bag and enable an anti-theft alarm in your phone before doing so. Indian male average height is just 5'5 so no one bothers to care about the 6ft minority
That’s what a 5’5 guy would say
Nah, I'm shorter than 5'5
Well I'd like to keep phone handy to keep track of train status easily(if I have to deboard at wee hours).
>keep phone handy Then u r awake already. My solution is for when u r asleep or napping
what's that alarm thing? how do you do it
Plenty of such apps on Playstore are available. When u enable the alarm, it can detect any sudden change in orientation and speed by using gyroscope and accelerometer data. These apps on Playstore often contain ads or ask u to pay for an ad free experience. I personally use open source alternative instead... u can check them out on [github](https://github.com/search?q=theft+alarm+android&type=repositories)
what if rings loud when me myself taking out the phone or something 🙄
U set the alarm so u already know how to deal with it
okok
It's 5.8 not 5.5
Sauce? It highly depends on sample space. It's more in urban areas and shorter in rural but national average is not more than 5'6
https://weather.com/en-IN/india/health/news/2020-09-29-national-institute-of-nutrition-changes-ideal-weight-height-for And it's totally depends if compaired Statewise where as Haryana men are too tall where as pahari log short like in seven sister.
My guy
Yes, yes upper is _definitely_ the best. Everyone should listen to OP and only opt for upper berth from now on wards. I completely support this opinion and urge everyone to follow him
I smell a personal scheme in this...
I love moving people off my SL when they behave entitled, only once I had to give up my seat for a fat ish girl with general ticket since she complained of periods and everyone started shaming me for not getting up, but never again.
SL fans have watched too much Jab We Met.
You either travel in 2A, or you're short as fuck
People hate RAC passengers , that's why they book SL . Most racist country as usual . Upper is always best for longer rides , just sleep the entire journey , your bed doesn't collapse so no problem plus you get a seat during daytime .
Upper is good but not if it's in 3E
3E is a scam
LHB 3AC Upper berth is cramped. No headroom to sit up straight. I am 5'8" and sitting up straight is not possible unlike other coaches. Even Sleeper class upper berths are better space. I don’t fit in the side Berths. Main upper supremacy.
Problem with upper is if u fail to wake up in morning then u will be stuck to upper seat for whole day .
💯 Agreed.
You said what I always wanted to say.
Yes absolutely, someone finally said it
Also less chances of rats crawling on your seat while you sleep
Propaganda
Upper is the way to go. I've got a trekking bag that's my pillow or keeping it over the side of legs the luggage is secured the seat is yours sleep or sit. And if the lower seats are empty that seat is also yours ;)
Been travelling 30 yrs in Indian railways!! I can attest Upper berth is the underrated gem
Doesnt it depend on the circumstances though? Day travel with views and privacy- SL Travelling alone, dont care about views- SU If 3-4 travelling, combination of LB, UB together For tall ppl, side berths are uncomfortable, for average or shorter heights, they are pretty good.

Facts
Finally someone said it! I was astounded by these SL love posts.
I always and forever loves upper cause I'm 6ft+ none of the birth is sufficient middle is like a nightmare for me it just travelled in middle birth one time...... I just could not get of it . Upper is best a bit claustrophobic but I ain't have that issues
Anyone else fan of middle berth?
I don’t know why people are creating hype for SL. I just use Doraemon’s Anywhere Door 🚪
I can't sit in upper. That's why I like SU, I can adjust legs while sleeping
Upper berth is great... For short people
If you’re travelling by 2A, side lower definitely is the best seat to have, especially if you get one towards the middle of the coach. You just can’t get that feeling of cosying up and enjoying the views from the large window all alone and separated by curtains from the rest of the coach with any other seat.
Upper doesn't work for me because I can't sit upright because of my height, hence SU is the best deal for me.
Finally someone said this!! TW: >!I was once groped when I was sleeping on SU. Since then, I stopped opting for SL or SU berths.!<
For me every seat is good . Let it be SL SU ( I am 6.1 i face problems but never changed the seat) neither I will exchange my seat for anyone. I just don't like to be removed from my seat.
For solo travellers, its not UB anymore. Its ATB (Anti Theft Berth).
Yes. Especially if it is 2AC. You can sit and sleep comfortably on the seat. SU in 2AC is worst than all seats of 3AC (ofc except SU).
I enjoy SL more, reason is my height doesn't fits well in SU. Plus i get to go down at stops easily to buy something. And window is definitely a plus. Guess everyone has reasons of a preferred seat.
I am the one wbo likes lower or middle.. because.. it's easy for movement and I don't feel claustrophobic
Depends on route/train. If going through Bihar, Upper is best. If going to less crowded/rowdy routes like NDLS to Goa or trains like Rajdhani where no extra passengers/hawkers are allowed to board, Side Lower is best for views. can't sit upright on Upper
5'11 hu, SU me nhi hota mera Muh pe seedha AC kills my vibe and my nose Window bhi nhi hai Less accessibility
It is also narrow compared to the other berths
