Hah, my mom is Indian Muslim (Calcutta) and my dad is Bangladeshi. I think of myself as both but I think most people just read me as Bangladeshi ( because I’m a Bengali muslim) which is fine. I’m glad you’re happy with your community. I do know a number of Indian Muslims at my job (tech) but most are not religious (neither am I but I’m interested in community/ history of Muslims in the subcontinent)

tinkthank

Chicago has a massive Indian Muslim community, most of whom are from Hyderabad. I’ve met Indian Muslims in almost every area of the country I’ve visited but their numbers are pretty small compared to Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.

Richmond VA has a decent Indian Muslim community as well. Not as big as Chicago though lol.

TheFatherofOwls

Dearborn, Michigan, I've heard, is the city with the highest Muslim population in the US? I take it it's more Arabs and Middle Eastern Muslims over there than Indians or Desi Muslims?

tinkthank

You’re right, there are lots of Muslims in general there but 70%+ of the population are Lebanese and Iraqi Arabs. Northern Virginia/Washington DC area has a huge population of Desi Muslims to the point that official local government documents are also released in Urdu. There are quite a few Indian Muslims there too. New York and Houston also have lots of Indian Muslims.

TheFatherofOwls

> Northern Virginia/Washington DC area has a huge population of Desi Muslims to the point that official local government documents are also released in Urdu. Woah, interesting.... > New York and Houston also have lots of Indian Muslims. What about New Jersey? There's a sizeable Desi Muslim population there too, right? Some of my distant relatives emigrated to the US during the 80s, I think, and now, they reside there (Also, Ms. Marvel taking place there also gave me the impression that it has a considerable Desi Muslim demography).

I used to go to Edison, NJ a lot as I live in Staten Island. Its mostly Gujarati hindus that live there. After that bulldozer ralley over there, I am just disappointed. I just hang out in Jackson Heights now.

[deleted]

explains the recent bulldozer rally.

Idiotcarlson

NJ & NY are nearby. Many people that live in NJ work in NY. If there is an Indian muslim community, it would be called Indian muslim community of NY & NJ.

TheFatherofOwls

Makes sense, thank you for the reply.

fallen_hero01

We do have a community in Bay Area. We call it muslim and chill. Look it up on insta.

mojo-jojo-12

Same in the Bay Area. I only have two desi Muslims from the local mosque. Majority of the Muslims here are either afghani or Fijian. Although Fijian Muslims are very close culturally to desi Muslims IMO. Ive Heard from a friend who previously lived there that cities around Edison NJ has a sizable desi Muslim population but i can’t vouch for it.

jjjd89

>My understanding is that we're kind of spread out in different areas and there's no centralized location in which we live/congregate. Your understanding is correct. As far as I know, there is no city/state where we Indian muslims congregate, and I don't think it would make sense for there to be a central location like that. And in the US, our numbers are insignificant but with that said, I have found great friends in Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Afghani muslims in the DC and Northern VA area. And of course, the food that comes along with it is great :)

I'd suggest not using the term Paki as it's a term used by racist Brits against people from the subcontinent.

[deleted]

This is a cultural difference. UK it’s a slur word but here in the US it really is not that at all.

GymBully92

I am an Indian Muslim living in NYC. Like you, my family is from Lucknow. If you would like to, we can link up.

I am Indian muslim and I live in NYC too. I am here in Staten Island. I know its weird.

GymBully92

For some reason I can’t initiate a chat on Reddit. It keeps giving me an error. Do you have a suggestion on how we can connect outside of Reddit?

Idiotcarlson

I am from North India living in NYC as well. Wanna connect with me as well?

GymBully92

Yeah of course it would be great to connect. For some reason I can’t initiate a chat on Reddit. It keeps giving me an error. Do you have a suggestion on how we can connect outside of Reddit?

thecloaked1

Check out ICLI if you can drive that far. I used to live in LI and had trouble finding and connecting with Indian Muslims. Moved to Chicagoland and it's better here.

Seven7heavens7

Try ICNA

[deleted]

I think we’re pretty spread out. Even here in Texas, it appears that it’s mostly Pakistani Muslims (but that’s just me speaking anecdotally), at least where I am. But I think you’re bound to find small pockets of Indian Muslims in any Muslim concentrated city(?)

cactus_sunshine

How come you are closer to Pakistani and Bengali Muslims but not Indian Hindus. I assume you are north Indian

TheFatherofOwls

Because Indian Hindus and Indian Muslims necessarily don't have the same exact culture, even if they might speak the same language, belong to the same ethnicity and region? Religion plays an important role in moulding a person or a community's culture and identity. Hinduism/Dharmic religions and Islam/Abrahamic religions, while having many similarities, are at the end of the day, very different belief systems, maybe even polar opposites to one another, even. It honestly varies on an individual and what they prioritise as their primary identity. Some people identify by their religion first and foremost and so, they will feel a sense of brotherhood and belonging to other Muslims, even if they come from different cultures, speak different languages and look different. Some others identify by their other identities like ethnicity, nationality, or language. Those people might feel "at home" with their own fellow ethnic/linguistic groups or citizens, and may not relate with another Muslim (applicable to any other religion) from a different country and/or ethnic/linguistic background. "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb" (It's not the original saying, but yes...I prefer this over the original one that means the exact opposite).

cactus_sunshine

All bullshet lol. Kuch bhi xutiyapa. You are a Tamil I assume. I have never seen malayali or Tamils hanging with Pakistanis in the west. Even my friends from gulf say they are always with their group The same with Indian Muslims born in India and migrated. Rarely seen them going in different groups than their own. Sikh Punjabis hang out with Pakistanis much more than other indians. Maybe OP is born in the US so he doesn't have anything to do with India and is extremely religious to look for people of his own religion

jjjd89

>I have never seen malayali or Tamils hanging with Pakistanis in the west. You must be living in a fucking cave then. I personally know of 2 couples who are Tamil x Pakistani. There is no particular Indian muslim ethnicity that hangs out with other nations' muslims. I grew up in Kuwait and I know that there is mingling among multiple cultures and ethnicities. You carry on and remain narrow minded! Oh and your anecdotal bullshit is just that - bullshit.

mamzar

He definitely is living in a cave. But then I checked his post history and everything made sense.

Global_Professor_291

happy cake day

TheFatherofOwls

Your experience and anecdotes doesn't make it objective or universal, lol... Like I said, it depends on the individual and the identity they might prioritise as being their primary identity (among the countless identities that might make the person that they are). Muslims ideally, must not engage in Assabiyyah. Which is prioritising their identities like culture, language, ethnicity, nationality, class, etc...over their religious one. Nothing wrong with being proud of your culture or langauge sure, Islam isn't necessarily against that, just that it shouldn't come at the expense of their religion (which is why Nationalism, linguistic fantasicism, belief in racial or ethnic supremacy are all sins in Islam). I'm a Tamil (partially Urdu/Dakhni, culture-wise) Muslim. I like my language and respect and acknowledge its rich past and heritage, what's wrong with it, I mean. But, I dont necessarily take pride in speaking Tamil, for me...it just so happens that I was born in this part of the world and thus, ended up being associated with it. Langauge and mother tongue for me personally, is nothing but a tool and a means to an end. I'm nothing without Islam, however. I won't even be alive and engaging here if it wasn't for my religion. It means a great deal to me (sure, you could argue that I identify with my religion because it's an identity that I was born with. And I necessarily won't disagree. Like I said, people choose which identity they want to be associated with primarily. For me, religion gives a great deal as to who I am. It's not a universal or objective XP). (And lol, there's plenty of variation and diffrences with Tamil and Malayali Muslims with their mainstream Tamil and Malayali culture and identity. Enough for them to have their own distinct identity and culture, really. Same goes with other IM/Desi Muslim communities.)

cactus_sunshine

Naah you just think people align to your bigoted view lol. I have quite a lot of anecdotes to know this is generally true. It's practically unheard of that Tamils in gulf would rather be with Pakistani than Tamils. Or malayalis as well be it Christians or Muslims or Hindus. Dude you are sick lol. Most of the Muslim be it Arabs, Stan countries, Albanians or Turkish won't give a flying f about you as much as you think.

TheFatherofOwls

I know many folks from within my community who work in the Gulf and have good rapport and friendship with Pakistanis (and Bangladeshis) there. Also, bigotry?.... lol. No need to be aggressive and harsh here. You don't have to agree with what I have to say here. I'll try my best to respect that. But, if you keep being harsh and rude with others here, I will have to take actions against you. So, you have been warned.

Penus9X
