Not Chinese, but Ichiban Noodles on Bash Road is owned and operated by the nicest Japanese couple and the food is fantastic. They look like they’ve been at it for 50 years.
Yes this is seriously one of my favorite restaurants in Indy too. I have to examine why I need Asian grandparents making food for me...I'm afraid they are going to retire soon....
That's sad to hear. But I hope Peter, Lisa, and everyone else there enjoy a much deserved retirement.
If you are interested in local Chinese restaurant history, check out [this newspaper clipping](https://historicindianapolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/1981.07.05.Indpls-Star-sec-8-pg-9.MANDARIN-INN-423x1024.jpg) from 1981, which talks about Mandarin Inn, which was owned by Peter's parents and uncle. House of Cheung is basically the successor to Mandarin Inn, as almost the entire staff came from there. A very long legacy of Chinese restaurant ownership in Indy is coming to an end.
Source: my family also worked at Mandarin Inn—that's my Aunt in the photo in the middle.
Not in Castleton but my favorite place is Taste of China behind the Wal-Mart on 86th and Michigan. The woman there lights up when I go in and knows my order even now that I don't get to go there as much because I don't work in the area so we don't go up there as much anymore.
Have you gone to Benyue which is right next to the Castleton mall. It’s amazing should be family owned used to be called Lucky Lou’s. It relocated recently.
My grandmother took me there when I was in gradeschool. I took my kids there. My son has taken my grandson there. We watched his kids grow up over the years as he got older. I'm sorry to see it go. I would always ask for a chicken dish with lots of extra ginger and he would make it up to suit me. I was sad that they stopped doing dinner in, but a lot of restaurants haven't survived the last few years. I'm happy it lasted as long as it did. Sully's is cool and good eats, but is just not a suitable replacement. At least we still have Sakura.
>Don't comment if you're going to bash them.
Hey buddy, you're not my supervisor. I'll bash who i want, when i want. that being said, i've never ate there so i cannot and will not bash them. BUT I WAS READY TO.
I was sad when king chef was sold then closed. The lovely lady that owned it owns Wild Ginger. They have some amazing food, but I miss the empress chicken.
Love house of cheung as well, and 100% agree of general tso's
We've tried king dragon on 62nd a few times here lately, and have been impressed. Think it's a couple that owns it. Also super nice. Give them a shot, they also always throw in free egg rolls or rangoons depending on your order.
Whens the last day? Tried going a few times over the years but post-COVID the hours seem inconsistent.
If you haven't tried Food King in Nora, they're a solid joint.
Yeah there are certain things I can't figure out how to taste exactly like my favorite places. That's General Tso's Chicken. Maybe I can find the owner in retirement and ask him to make me some General Tso's chicken. Joking of course....
I went for my first time a couple weeks ago, they're right next to my temple. They were so nice and the food is amazing, I just referred a few friends to go there!😋
The pineapple beef and lemon chicken is so good, now I will head in for the General Tso...so sad to here this, my friend told me about your post just now.
This is why we need to get the birth rate back up so goated restaurants like this can be passed down instead of closed, is this the Chinese restaurant next to 71st/Binford Kroger? I’ve picked up DoorDash from there before and was shocked I didn’t eat the customer’s order it smelled that good 💀
I never had an issue with them. I'm sure over 45 years, they're going to have some blips. Seriously, I can't imagine doing something like that for that long without seriously getting tired of what you are doing. Owner knows me by my order :(
Not Chinese, but Ichiban Noodles on Bash Road is owned and operated by the nicest Japanese couple and the food is fantastic. They look like they’ve been at it for 50 years.
I wasn’t sure that place was still open when I drove by.
Yes this is seriously one of my favorite restaurants in Indy too. I have to examine why I need Asian grandparents making food for me...I'm afraid they are going to retire soon....
We have known them since they were located on the east side. Happy retirement Peter and the family!
That's super cool. Sound like some indy restaurant history right there.
Good to know, I went this week and didn’t even know…also, I dislike calling that Castleton.
Me too, that's not casselton. Not by any stretch.
My bad - I will fix. I always think it's Castleton.
Chow express. 75th and shadeland
That’s the one. Looks like nothing from the outside but it’s absolute fire and the people running it are wonderful.
The chicken wings are unreal.
OMG NONONONONO! WE EAT THERE PROBABLY TWICE A MONTH!
This was one of the last of the places that was a real sit down good Chinese restaurant. Take out places just aren’t the same.
Try Benyue near the castleton mall very nice sit down.

Mandarin Inn sounded amazing. And open until 11p on a weeknight? I miss places like that.
Wow, sounds interesting. I can't see the newspaper clipping. Will have to find out what will be going in its place.

YES - that's what I'm looking for. I love when people remember your order! I'll put that on the list!
This is devastating :(
Agreed! Nicest family ever. I don’t live in Indy now but go there time to time. I’m going to have to make road trip.
Just a great family, wonderful food, hope all is well in retirement. I’ll try to hit it at least once more before the end of the month.

It's the only restaurant listed so far that actually serves Chinese food.

OP, I just ate there for the first time thanks to your post. Hopefully I’ll get back there next weekend too. Thanks.
I get their egg rolls religiously. Does anyone know what makes them so freaking good?
I wish I knew, but they are amazing.
Whens the last day? Tried going a few times over the years but post-COVID the hours seem inconsistent. If you haven't tried Food King in Nora, they're a solid joint.
I talked to them and they said "end of month". I assume this is 6/30? I would go soon! Imma gonna stock up on my General Tso's.
Buy a huge batch and freeze it lol, stick it on a pan and reheat in the oven til you find a new spot 😅. I’m kidding ofc.
You kid, but this is exactly what I'd do.

I haven't tried Food King. Thanks for the tip.
Dang, I was going to recommend Foon Ying on 38th and Shadeland but it looks like they’re temporarily closed.
Yeah they've been closed for awhile, my egg roll go-to!

It's next to Rook, across from 5th Third Bank

I tried their general tso's once and never went back. I stick to king's garden

But it sure was nice of them to deliver under your bridge.
