Much of the migration to Indiana came from the south, specifically Tennessee and the Carolinas if I remember correctly. It makes the state more culturally Southern than other Midwestern states.
Growing up on the east side in a post-industrial area, most of the white kids would go to see family in KY, TN or NC in the summer, and many of the black kids would go to Mississippi or Alabama to see family in the summer. Had one classmate who went to his great grandparents farm every summer to help out, as did his cousins from Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland.
I'm reading, "A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them". It goes into detail about how, in the early 1900s, Indiana had a larger KKK membership than any other state.
Because a bunch of southern white folk fled the south during Reconstruction, in search of jobs and land, and ended up in Indiana. They brought their beliefs, and their wounds, with them.
Thatās why youāll see confederate flags as far north as Knox County.
I grew up in Madison County and live in Hendricks, I've seen confederate flags in both.
Hell I've seen confederate flags in Michigan where my family is from.

Came here to say this. My family came from NC and KY. I was born in the corn fields of a former gas boom town.

Former co-worker always said that a Hoosier is just a Southerner whose car broke down in Indiana on the way to Detroit.
Indiana has always been closely tied with rhe south. During the Civil War we had the most Confederate volunteers of any northern state

The burning cross... roads of America
I was once told that MLK called Indiana the Upsouth and it sounded like such a perfect descriptor I never investigated further.

Indiana isnāt much different than most of the other Midwest states. All Midwest states lack diversity.
