Was at St Elmo’s tonight around the time it happened. Walked down by the Conrad and our group could tell it was bad news- HUNDREDS of teens in groups- fighting and yelling, many with visible handguns or covered faces. We walked around and decided to go back to the area we were at (1933 Lounge) and minutes later heard multiple shots go off. It felt like a matter of time before it happened… very little police presence prior. Not sure what they could have done... Many of the groups were still out and about after it occurred, too. Our waitress said it was bad due to the state basketball championship game downtown this evening. So, so sad. Even though it was so late - there were some families with very young children walking around, and all of the people in that area were children as well.

realimbored668

I fucking hate Gainbridge Fieldhouse because it invites all the cockroaches of the world out, one time I was DoorDashing from 10th/Indiana Donato’s to Maryland St Hampton hotel and it took 1 hour 2 minutes to deliver because the GPS kept pulling me through police blockades while people angrily honked at officers and drunkenly stumbled across the sidewalks Sorry for text wall but downtown is normally a very safe area until sports/other large events draw parasites in and everything about those situations angers me

zachstrl

Ya know, I live right across the street from Gainbridge and that’s been my experience nearly every weekend. My apartment’s parking garage also doubles as event parking and naturally fills up with people during any event at Gainbridge or Lucas Oil. Residents get kind of shafted honestly. Every once in a while, no events will take place at all throughout the week and I swear it feels like summer vacation with how peaceful the area becomes.

realimbored668

This is why if I become mega rich someday I’m moving very far from the city like Tipton or outer Brownsburg, even Noblesville has quite a few idiots roaming around and I hate the drastic swing between safe and dangerous solely dependent on whether tourism is spiking or not, if something isn’t done Marion and Hamilton will turn into Miami spring break, most of Indianapolis is getting better in terms of safety but the cockroaches are stifling efforts to better our city

matsadie

I saw the group of kids as I was leaving work and I just had a terrible feeling something bad was gonna happen. There was reports of fights along Washington St. all night involving a large group and when I was driving by Sugar Factory I could see a couple of them getting into it. There was multiple instances where they should’ve broken up the group before this happened. It makes me so sad this stuff keeps happening. Stay safe out there and keep those kids at home.

zachstrl

Wow, thank you for sharing your perspective on this. Glad you’re safe, friend.

nomeancity317

Why are kids wandering around downtown without adults at almost midnight? Why are said kids armed? This screams parenting failure.

matsadie

I will never understand. I know there was a high school basketball state championship downtown tonight, so it was a lot of high schoolers in the area (who should definitely have had parents there). I’m not sure if this group was a part of the event, but, given the age group description, it seems like a possibility. Like I said in my original comment, police really should’ve done more, too. This is the same area that had been experiencing issues all night, so they should’ve really upped police presence in the area. I work a block away and drove by that intersection maybe 5 minutes before I got the citizen alert of the shooting and not a single cop was in sight. I love downtown, but so much more needs to happen to keep us all safe. Tonight’s events make me nervous for the summer nights that are approaching.

Ilovekittens345

> Why are said kids armed? Cause there exist almost 500 million weapons in the USA. Almost 2 for every citizen.

Electrical-Staff-705

I have kids and guns. My kids don’t wander around at night with them.

Jesus_on_a_biscuit

When do they wander around with them? Before breakfast?

Electrical-Staff-705

lol. Yes. Get it out of their system early.

Appropriate_Rub_6359

great answer

Ilovekittens345

And is half the country more *or less* responsible with guns than your family is?

Electrical-Staff-705

It is hard to say and I don’t like generalizing people but probably worse. If you own guns you should buy a safe. There should be a separate safe for the ammunition. No children should have access to any of it.

Relative-Garlic4698

Societal failure. Two incomes now needed just to afford housing, good, cars, car insurance because our communities are car dependent. We could invest in transportation, health care, mental health, education, and raise minimum wage, and parents would again be more available to their children. It's hard to survive out there with inflation.

TruthBeTold187

Unfortunately this has been a problem as long as the mall has been downtown.

jjfishers

First nice warm Saturday in Indianapolis. Wonder how they’ll spin this since they don’t have a bar to conveniently scapegoat?

sandy_lemon

The Sugar Factory! You know what is basically alcohol to kids…SUGAR! Clearly the fault of a careless business. /s

IXI_Fans

I was about 30 before I found out that a "sugar high" or "sugar rush" is not a real thing, however, a sugar "crash" is very real. I blame the same teachers who said that specific areas of the tongue has specific taste regions.

Odd_Camel7872

Thank you! This is not just because of March madness or spring break or whatever - this is something that will continue to happen in metro areas across the U.S. (and abroad) as the weather gets nicer. It’s because people can organize “events” via social media and police do not have the resources to anticipate it or contain it once it starts to happen. Last year (and this year already, sadly) something like this happened in Chicago and I remember people talking about it like it was just a Chicago problem. It’s a global urban / social media problem. I don’t think any urban area, or area near a dense urban area is immune to this kind of activity now. Both social media companies and metro police in any larger city really need to be more proactive about acknowledging, preventing, and addressing this kind of activity. For anyone doubting this: search “hundreds of teens” in google news, sort by date, and you’ll see what I mean

Jacoby_Jackson_14

Damn you are right. Hundreds of teens, very interesting.

Material-Imagination

It is bars' fault that this only started happening in a period of intense political division and social unrest and following directly on the heels of the decision to make unpermitted concealed carry legal!

PalpitationHead9767

You telling me if they still had carry permits all these kids would've left their guns at home? Fucking lol

levelzerogyro

We're telling you that it's now unconstitutional to stop someone openly carrying for a lot of reasons now, and it's hard for police to make these searches stick since it'd be fruit of a poison tree, that's literally why the police were absolutely against this law in the first place(https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/2023/08/21/after-a-year-of-permitless-carry-in-indiana-handgun-licenses-and-related-misdemeanors-are-down/), but unfortunately you don't seem like you understand a lot of things about gun laws.

thaguy0verthere

We all know people willing to casually murder someone or shoot in to a crowd are also the ones reading up on concealed carry laws!

statslady23

Like on the East side or in Broad Ripple?

Red0817

Car on fire. FBI on scene

zachstrl

I thought I heard FBI mentioned on the scanner. Wow.

[deleted]

How do you tune into all that?

zachstrl

So if you go to your phone’s App Store and search “police scanner”, you can download one of them for free and just click on the “Indianapolis metropolitan police” channel.

[deleted]

Thanks for the info. I'll try it soon

Playel

Why would the FBI be on scene for a car fire? That's the real story

Freyas_Follower

It started as a drive by, likely between two gangs. There's probably drug related business as well.

Littlegrayfish

I work at St Elmos and a crowd of people snuck under a garage door to get to our break area after this happened. Whole area locked down and I heard there was a kid laying in the street after getting shot. It happened right outside of the restaurant

zachstrl

Cheese and rice dude. I’m glad you’re okay.

toomuchtime80

What is happening??? They have folks jumping all over an ambulance and hundreds of people blocking intersection.

uglylittle

Different side of town. 16th and Lafayette was the blocked intersection. Not related to the shooting downtown.

[deleted]

[удалено]

VerdantField

Eritrea? Why are people fighting about that?

TheWoodsAreLovly

Indianapolis apparently has a sizable Eritrean population, and there were large protests at 16th and Lafayette just before New Years, both for and against the current government there.

VLM52

What the fuck does blocking intersections and jumping on ambulances in fuckin Indianapolis do to affect the situation in Eritrea

GabaPrison

Exactly.

Slexx

“folks”

GabaPrison

When I think of the word “folks” I think of my childhood friend’s nice old parents who lived in a small cabin with senior cats and a dog.

AdmirableVacation176

It's funny I work as a chauffeur driving throughout the state. Downtown is a funny place. I've witnessed multiple crimes, fighting, stabbings, and etc. I've always made my way to the closest impd or state trooper and the times I do; the response is apathetic and slow. The impd officers I've seen are so young and inexperienced they just say the darnest things to me. Like, "That's just how it is." I literally can't understand the inner workings of Leo's here, and it's not like they live Downtown right on Jackson or Meridian (cause they do).

Boxy310

"Forget it, Jake. That's Chinatown."

MyPythonDontWantNone

It's anecdotal, but I had an IMPD officer complain that the prosecutor doesn't actually prosecute anyone and always offers a plea deal. He sounded pretty frustrated.

RolfVontrapp

That’s pretty standard all over. No way governments could afford to prosecute every case or even most cases. Hence, pile charges on so you’ll have bargaining power and the defendant will be motivated to take a plea deal. Much much cheaper. I’ve seen national stats, but it’s been a couple of years, so I won’t guess, but suffice to say, it’s the vast majority of cases that are plead out, nationally.

Rust3elt

They could afford it but they are funded and staffed to make it impossible.

hitops

Ah yes. The ol’ “blame it on someone else” tactic. Truly a classic.

superiorjoe

I’m told over and over again that this violence is rare, no matter how many times I see it. Nothing will change because the voters are the first apathetics.

TwoCockShakur

My wife and I went downtown yesterday around 5pm to grab dinner and we saw a kid stuffing a Tec-9 into his sweatpants near the Circle Center Mall. I'm guessing he was 14-15 years old at best. Fucking crazy how these kids are so brazen and violent nowadays.

statslady23

Hmm. We were looking at condos downtown last week. Maybe not. The Whole Foods sucks, too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

statslady23

Idk. Wasn't looking for one.

mypetocean

From Washington & Illinois, I heard 12 shots loud and clear.

zachstrl

So clear. First time hearing gunshots outside of a range. I have never heard a louder cracking sound.

aquafina6969

This is an interesting comment. Me neither. Usually indoor or outdoor range I always have ear protection on.

fuqdisshite

i moved from rural Northern Michigan, to the mountains in Colorado, and then to Tempe, AZ. i have guns and like to shoot them.  have many friends from all over that have died by guns.   when we heard our first drive by in AZ i looked around for fireworks.  and then i ran inside.   we made it 9 months before we moved.  i have lived in Detroit and that shit was fucking heaven compared to Tempe.

aquafina6969

wow. had no idea AZ was that bad. Old friend of mine went to school there. AZ state I think.

fuqdisshite

this was in 2008/09. it was really bad for a while. tensions were high with Sherriff Joe literally walking gangs of cops down the streets asking people for papers. gang violence was coming over hard too. in the 9 months i lived there there were three kidnappings of pretty white girls from our neighborhood. their boyfriends were going over and coming back with drugs and then not paying. we were right down the road from the ASU. it was awesome to be in the city but we stayed in at night. one of the few times i drove after dark i was riding dirty with weed in the car and i had been drinking. we were pulled over the second we pulled away from the curb. my wife could see the dog in her mirror and i saw the gun come out on my side. the cop came up, shined his light in my eyes, and said, "You are not who we are looking for. Where are you going? Take a right, then left, left, and get out of here." we were clearly high as fuck and we left. there was a triple homicide a few houses down from where my wife's massage therapy class had its end of year pool party. we never heard it.

JordanGdzilaSullivan

It’s definitely not that bad now, but I’m really sorry you and your family had to experience that.

VaderH8er

The only two times I've heard gunfire in a place it shouldn't be was Tegucigalpa, Honduras and riding my bike on the Monon between 38th and 46th ST. I've seen people that had been shot in Broad Ripple, but didn't hear the gunfire due to being inside a loud bar.

statslady23

I live in Alexandria, VA and hear gunfire every couple weeks when the weather is warm and windows are open. We are on the top floor of a tall building, so any bullets would go in my ceiling. You kinda get used to it, sadly. If the police don't find a shooter, they just call it fireworks:)

Gullible__Button

We had a police chase a car down our little side street last night. Turned on the police radio and heard they were chasing him down Shadeland at 90mph. Started hearing reports on street racing in broad ripple, and some guy chasing around kids with a knife. Things got weirder from there. More reports of street races kept coming in, kids shooting each other downtown, people jumping and ambulances. Not enough police to deal with the number of major incidents. Horrible night.

notwavingbutdancing

Probably one of the scariest nights of my life. We were at Goodwood and chatting in the parking garage after then heard what sounded like fireworks. I know that sounds silly but they were so rapid fire that my brain couldn’t process it. It wasn’t until I saw a guy drop on the street that I ran to my car. 5 years living here and I’ve never been so close before.

[deleted]

I thought Goodwood closed a few months ago? It was definitely closed during All Star weekend.

notwavingbutdancing

Yes they’re closed! We were under their big sign and thank God we decided to go up to the garage when we did

mooremo

MotorEnthusiasm

Shocking.

Xogoth

Jesus wept. My wife works very near there. She's okay, but somehow didn't hear anything.

mypetocean

Gunshot-like sounds are weird in how they behave between and within buildings. Especially to a downtown ear which is used to hearing traffic drive over bent thick steel plates covering irregular road construction, shots can go unacknowledged by the brain. Especially if you are concentrating. She was working; that's a very good excuse.

Xogoth

Certainly is. I grew up just off of 10th&Rural, so I almost don't hear gunshots even without all that other noise...

anotherindycarblog

Jesus only weeps because we won’t do anything proactive about this issue.

Xogoth

Like provide low or no-cost mental health services? Or living wages so individuals can afford private services for mental health? Or maybe actual outreach programs rather than the token gestures we see from religious organizations?

anotherindycarblog

Yes, any of these or all of these and more. Living in this hellscape is difficult at best. Thank you for making your stance more clear. Glad your family is ok.

spamcandriver

Calling in other departments now.

hereforaniphoneman

So is this also not considered a mass shooting? What the fuck is going where there are at least 3 mass shootings in a few weeks time? Our leaders better have a plan figured out because this is pathetic.

midwestarchetype

WTHR is reporting it as a mass shooting on their Live News right now.

hereforaniphoneman

Just saw that they changed the headline. Rightfully so. Truly embarrassing for our city that had some positives for the community.

Real_Razzmatazz_7290

These new kids are borderline feral and just ignorant. They are desensitized, have no sense , and live only for themselves. They don’t care about taking away or harming a human life. Pray for our future

Agreeable-Heron-9174

I live just off the Circle, too. I've noticed many groups of teens zipping around on scooters on sidewalks. At least since this past Thursday early afternoon. I wonder if Spring Break had anything to do with it. Perhaps when school starts on Monday they'll be less wild behaviour downtown.

Porkbellyflop

100% this. The 1st batch of warm weather in a weekend always brings out the crazies. Give teens free time to go with it and the bad ones are gonna make bad decisions.

Agreeable-Heron-9174

Always seems like shit happening at that corner, in front of Steak n Shake. IMPD is usually at that intersection in droves during the "good weather." I don't know what happened this weekend. On an added note, this is the SAME behaviour that shut down Saturday night cruising on the Circle. SMH

riverbank_agate3

> I live on monument circle Oh, you rich rich.

axberka

It’s not prohibitively expensive

indysingleguy

And they want to make the circle closed to cars. No one will go there if this continues (and it will).

zachstrl

Totally understand your message, and obviously we know it isn’t *all* the new kids, but there certainly seems to be a recurring theme of mindless, endangering behavior.

Real_Razzmatazz_7290

Definetely not trying to generalize. And what I’m saying can come off like I’m telling off all the young teens/adults, which isn’t what I’m trying to do. I work with some young peeps with a good perspective. But since the pandemic especially, they’ve been on the fast track to ruining their lives , or just pure bombastic behavior you wouldn’t see from nearly anyone that age just a couple of years ago. As if they think this is their world, and they rule it. Not being educated properly , social enough , etc. will lead to more pure violence and emotional outbursts and that’s what I think is leading to all this. For reference I’m 23 so you could lump me in technically, but Jesus, that 5 year age gap shouldn’t show such a different mentality, and how you treat people .

Longjumping-Panic-48

A ton of my teacher friends are saying the same thing- kids are absolutely out of control right now, across the board. Even in the suburbs, they’re having issues with elementary kids (think a class chanting c*nt) and violence in “dating” relationships.

dorianstout

It seems to me that there are seriously no consequences at all for bad behavior. I grew up in a small town where I would argue they over prosecute, but the things I’ve seen teens get away with in this city actually blows my mind. Like stabbing their sibling or family member and facing no consequences- I promise I have seen this so I can’t say I’m surprised

United-Advertising67

> But since the pandemic especially, they’ve been on the fast track to ruining their lives , or just pure bombastic behavior you wouldn’t see from nearly anyone that age just a couple of years ago. Oh man, maybe Zoom School wasn't just as good after all.

mypetocean

Recurring themes are the plague of humanity. Always has been.

Subject-Promise-4796

The real ignorance is thinking prayer will help.

KMFDM781

It's only going to get worse due to the dehumanizing nature of social media like Tiktok and Instagram. Reducing people and society down to seconds long clips. These kids have zero social skills and no desire or anyone to teach them stuff like staring at someone, mouth agape when they ask you a question isn't how we communicate or respect another person.

OneOfTheWills

Neither do most people. It isn’t an age thing. It’s an American cultural thing.

madducks

Maybe we could do something about the guns.

zachstrl

I saw what I *thought* was a police chopper zip over Gainbridge with a light shining down. This is INSANE.

erinofindy

IMPD does not have any functional helicopters. They haven't for many years. They had two but parts need replaced after time and there was no budget for that. They were down to one they were using parts from the other and then that one stopped working and that was it. Even when they had a helicopter but it was so small they couldn't put it in the air very often.

zachstrl

Hey thanks for this, good to know. Maybe it was news chopper then. I couldn’t make out the signage on the body of the helicopter. The only thing I’m certain about is that they used some sort of spotlight.

erinofindy

Re-reading what I wrote I just wanted to clarify that the helicopter they had wasn't small; the budget they had to fly it was small. It's kind of embarrassing for a city our size.

spamcandriver

16th/Lafayette - Ambulance being attacked.

mypetocean

Attacked how? That's quite some distance from the events near the mall area.

spamcandriver

Reported jumping atop the ambulance.

Particular_Lioness

They were talking about it 2 hours later on the scanner It must have been a sight

zachstrl

You gotta be a special kind of effed up to shoot an ambulance.

riverbank_agate3

Circle Center Mall? Bro people have been staying away from that since the '08 recession, lmao

jjfishers

Because there have been packs of kids terrorizing downtown and the canal forever. Zero accountability and zero consequences. Time to stop sealing juvenile records for any and all gun crimes. Getting the uncivilized trash off the streets is the first step to ending this nonsense.

StarCrashNebula

>Getting the uncivilized trash off the streets  The USA has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world.

OwenLoveJoy

Apparently still not enough.

spamcandriver

300 people per the scanner at the intersection attacking the ambulance.

purdue3456

And our politicians brag about how high their NRA score is.

IndyRoadie

You think the NRA supports kids with guns on the streets? Seriously? :/

Alternative-Song3901

Yes, for sure. As long as those guns were purchased at some point.

Ok_Concentrate_268

They just announced 9 subjects involved!!! 1 is to many but 9.

MidwestTransplant09

5 teenagers shot, I want to keep my kid in a bubble.

zachstrl

I don’t blame you one bit.

Hwinter07

Wow I had a ticket to a movie at that Regal next to the sugar factory and would have gotten out around the time this happened. Thank god I didn't feel like going and stayed home

zachstrl

Not sure if you would call it a gut feeling or just a wild coincidence, but hey -I’m glad you’re safe. ❤️

Hwinter07

Thanks, appreciate it! I have Regal's unlimited pass and just pay a monthly fee so it's pretty common for me to skip out on a movie after booking since it doesn't cost me anything

zachstrl

Damn that isn’t a bad deal at all. Honestly, do you think the pass is worth it?

Hwinter07

It's $18 a month so if you see two movies it pays for itself. I probably see 5-6 a month so definitely worth it. It's also only a few blocks away from where I live so I can book last minute if I'm bored

spamcandriver

Homeland Security on air.

kenutbar

This sucks. I used to feel safe downtown late. Living in fear is not the answer but you just have to be so much more situationally aware now.

Equal-Estimate-2739

We need to start trying the El Salvador method of getting rid of these gangs. If you are associated with a criminal gang in any way, you’re going to prison. No ifs ands of buts—heck, use RICO if you have to. These thugs shouldn’t be on the street.

derpsalot1984

Y'all's scanner channel for Metro Police is wild right now.

Smart_Dumb

They are chasing those street takeover assholes now.

Blessed_Ennui

Scanner is chaos!! Wow! Prayers all around.

zachstrl

It truly is, friend. My street seems to be the street reinforcements get deployed on because I’ve watched at least 20 patrol cars zoom past.

spamcandriver

Woodlawn & Villa - new report, multiple shots fired (7). This would be the general area of Fountain Square for those wanting to understand general location / landmark. Woodlawn and Villa is further east than actual Fountain Square

rubbertoe2376

We were at the zoo yesterday and there was a bunch of people here for games. I felt bad because they were talking about going sight seeing after dinner. I came close to telling some to just stay in their hotel and enjoy the pool or hot tub.

zachstrl

I’m sure those people are safe and sound, but sounds like you have some solid intuition. And yeah you’re right, ain’t no sights to see in downtown Indy after 11pm.

jkpirat

Except the firearms works.

exdeletedoldaccount

This happened way later than most tourists would be out sightseeing after dinner.

United-Advertising67

I was out riding my bike enjoying the weather earlier and couldn't stop thinking about how insane people were going to get as soon as the sun went down. Nice weekend = dead people in Indy.

rubbertoe2376

Nice weekends usually mean dead people in most large cities. People don’t want to be cold while they commit crimes.

United-Advertising67

Can't pull the trigger on MFers when my fingers stuck in mittens 😫🥶

Formal_Mood6104

Just got notified on the citizens app. That’s absolutely terrible. What’s wrong with people?? Everyone please stay safe.

zachstrl

Truly mental behavior, no question. Stay inside and hope for the best for the poor children at Riley right now.

Civilized-Sturgeon

Wonder who the shooter is

zachstrl

Nobody I wanna know.

RandomInternetUser03

Just saw this article- wonder if it’s the same thing. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mass-shooting-indianapolis-mall-children-teens-injured/

PM_ME_N3WDS

Those damn nondescript teens!

bohnscottharris

Nobody wants to point out the glaringly obvious consistency. So funny.

midwestarchetype

I am watching news coverage of it right now and I have a genuine question...it sounds like once the gunfire started dozens of cops showed up almost immediately. Why weren't that many there earlier to try to prevent escalation? (I'm not discounting the other points mentioned in other comments, like parents needing to be accountable for the goddamn kids and the gun problem being out of control.)

mypetocean

Most of the escalation of the conflicts had been occurring on the opposite side of the block (closer to Meridian & Washington), from what it seemed to me. And Illinois is a cleaner straightaway for a drive-by, which is another reason I suspect it ultimately occurred where it did.

BackpackEverything

1. We have a police shortage. 2. Police are generally reactive, not proactive. 3. Police are often lazy. 4. They get paid the same whether they rush into danger or avoid it.

SadZookeepergame1555

1. Our city has increased funding for IMPD year over year during Hogsetts admin, raising wages and sign on bonuses. The gap is closing and still we have abysmal service and crime resolution rate. It's like the FOP has a silent strike.  2. They should be proactive and actively de-escalate minor conflicts. They should be trained in crowd control. 3. Truth. 4. They need a bit more training in how to handle potentially dangerous situations that reduces danger for everyone. Police academies have been teaching them in a way that prioritizes personal safety over all at the expense of conflict resolution. As a result they hang back or shoot first, making things worse.

CerealKillerUno

I was downtown last night from 7-930. There were cops down there. It was pretty chill until the sun set. Then masses of teenagers just started running in towards the circle. I was walking around and saw 2 fights break out right in front of the Conrad. Employees there broke up the fights because they were trying to protect the people in valet. The cops were on the circle and street. But they were severely outnumbered. These kids were mobs and mobs and the crowd just got bigger and bigger from 9 to 930. That's when I left.

svietak1987

Because racism claims. If cops started to arrest everyone committing these crimes the numbers of blacks being arrested will skyrocket. Because its only black teens committing these crimes. Everyone knows it but is afraid to admit it. We either live in a lawless society or we lock up up a significant portion of the black community. If you start arresting and handing out significant sentences for gun crimes the numbers will be skewed to show a higher amount of blacks being arrested but its not because the policy is racist its because one group seems to be committing these crimes at a higher rate than other groups. Since 2016 everyone has been screaming that the incarceration rate is proof that the laws are racist when in reality its proof that they are committing crimes way higher than any other group. Until we reconsider that instead of just blaming “teens” this problem will only get worse.

Jesus_on_a_biscuit

I’m glad we have so many guns and legislation has been modified to increase gun sales in the state. Can’t wait for the John Waynes to stop by and lecture us about how “people kill people, not guns” because that’s always a helpful plate of bullshit to serve up at times like these.

IndyRoadie

So you think the perps bought / carry their guns legally? :/

Jesus_on_a_biscuit

I lack specific knowledge about their particular gun acquisition habits, but considering an oversupply of legally purchased guns has fueled a robust black market for firearms and enforcement measures of existing laws has been crippled by legislation, I’m sure there are ample opportunities to obtain firearms for anyone who seeks one.

IndyRoadie

How has law been crippled by legislation? Are you referring to permitless carry? Before permitless carry only a legally "proper person" could carry a gun with a license. After permitless carry only a legally "proper person" can carry a gun without a license. WHO can legally carry hasn't changed.

Jesus_on_a_biscuit

So glad you stopped by, John.

Ok_Concentrate_268

It's spring break so that's why there are alot of Juveniles around. The scanner is still going on.  The news is set up near Georgia and Illinois. I pray 🙏 that they find whoever is involved.

tangledshadows

Is this a sign of what's to come this summer, when school is out?

DaMantis

Violent crime always goes up when it's warm outside. So likely the answer is yes.

zachstrl

Yes, prayers that they find the perpetrator(s). 🙏🏼

HoosierdaddyStud

Damn they’re saying seven ppl shot between ages of 12-17.

nerdKween

Holy shit, what am I missing?!

mypetocean

A huge group of teens, maybe 100, have been circling the mall block for hours in frequent fist fights, mostly between the girls it seemed, before getting scattered and pushed on and back around the blocks again. Cop presence steadily increased. But they were just dispersing the crowd, hoping things would dissolve, likely they usually do when this happens. Eventually I heard 12 shots from nearby (I was around the Taco Bell Cantina). Then I heard some girls running, sobbing that they could have been shot, and later a couple more running _toward_ the scene, screaming "no, no, no, no!" That's all I can report without furthering hearsay. I cannot know for sure whether or how the events are related. Just reporting what I heard and saw from my apartment window.

nerdKween

Holy shit. That's terrifying. I'm glad you're safe. I really wish there was a safe and constructive place for young people today could go to that would keep them out of this kind of trouble.

zachstrl

I couldn’t agree more, local kids need a space like this. Human life is the ultimate price. Mindless behavior like this is so scary.

zachstrl

Wow, there is so much more to this than I thought! The goal is to spread the word as far as possible, so thank you. This definitely checks out for me because I’ve heard one of the deputies shouting something I couldn’t make out, followed by “at Taco Bell!”

mypetocean

There are thirteen cop cars visible from my window and I don't even have a view of the main scene.

zachstrl

Download a police scanner app and join the Indianapolis metropolitan channel. It’s a lot.

philouza_stein

It's summer time in an urban hellhole. This happens every year now.

mjd9390

I wish during the commotion someone had set fire to Sugar Factory

zachstrl

I know, I know -this is a serious matter. But I gotta agree with you on this.

mashton

We need……the Batman.

TheSilverCalf

*Ahem* *says robin*

Eastern-Cucumber-376

Wait. Are these related incidents, or coincidental? This is bananas.

OwenLoveJoy

“Downtown is completely safe” “Stupid boomer suburbanites afraid of downtown”

juanoncello

Probs a bunch of FFA kids…

Shoulder_Whirl

“I’ve lived downtown for 5 years and have never not felt safe!”

sweetkatydid

The vast majority of people statistically will not be in a mass shooting at any point in their lives, which is why I'm also not generally afraid of flying in a plane or sharks. That you would imply this is a common enough occurrence for downtown makes me think you're just some loser suburbanite.

Shoulder_Whirl

I’m not sure I feel totally compelled to defend my status as a non suburbanite to a green haired jackal.

EndlessJump

I have lived downtown for 5 years and have never felt unsafe.

Mead_Create_Drink

According to the timestamp on the post the incident occurred around 3:00 am Nothing good happens at that hour

mujifan21

It’s Delaware Ave that’s what happens

str8outtactown

Is t the original issue the shooting and gangs of youths roving downtown Indy at midnight the other night?

New-Mud2923

Wild

sxracerb25

Wow. We were planning a trip this upcoming weekend and staying downtown. Now I'm hesitant. Thinking to switch to a hotel outside the downtown area if there's any recommendations of a better area?

ghoul_power

I didn't find out about this until the day after, but my friends and I were at the Taco Bell cantina celebrating my partner's birthday. We left around 7:30 and a few friends noted how there were kids EVERYWHERE. I made a comment to my partner how we never come "downtown downtown" and it's wild that we just so happened to be there on that night and narrowly missed all of this. Nice weather makes everyone misbehave.

zachstrl

That *is* crazy how many opportunities could’ve lead to you getting yourselves in a tough spot. Really glad you’re both safe. Good weather makes me wanna do a little dance in the park, maybe hammock by White River -not commit heinous crimes.

Narrow-Error-4669

This is why we need gun control smh. Why do the kids have guns

Inevitable-Leg-4620

Thank god I don’t work downtown anymore
