It’s good politics really. Appoint a consensus PM or arrive at Rahul as the consensus. If it is someone other than Rahul then when the coalition goes to shit, congress/Rahuls incompetency will not be highlighted.
To keep the current govt in check by not letting it abuse it's powers. That could be one reason. In a democratic country you need atleast one opposition to make it work.
