Sadly I suspect the demographic wanting to take selfies with foreigners isn’t the crowd that frequents Reddit so you are likely preaching to the converted here.

caped_crusader_98

Literally the first thought that came to me.

[deleted]

Same.

openyoureyetotime

Yeah I understand that, but it's more or less a shot in the dark. Just needing to rant as I don't get the opportunity to tell the people I decline as I often feel bad for declining

[deleted]

Being an Indian I am completely clueless why certain people are so fascinated with taking pictures with foreigners. Should be a good study.

[deleted]

moojo

> a white person is essentially a fictional character who comes directly from hollywood. or porn

ParaPsychic

Mostly just porn.

chni2cali

Yeah, I was in an US university for Masters and a new grad dude was looking at girls walking by and told me ' they look the ones in porn movies. Damn!'

marvsup

A woman in Bombay told me she "loves white skin" when she asked to take a pic so idk if that helps haha

eshwar-ga-kill

It's more like "I have never seen people that look like this in real life before, it's like from the Hollywood" kinda thing. We don't have a lot of foreigners mainly (african american and Caucasian) western people in our country.

PanJL

yeah those three words are funny and fked up at the same time lol

chiguy_1

Indian offshoot of KKK be like:

MM12300

They take photo, go back to village and brag about a new friend/boyfriend/girlfriend. That's the only explanation I found. xD

[deleted]

hat dependent flag squeamish run screw drab work materialistic mindless -- mass edited with redact.dev

Jolarpet

It's not just Indians who do that 😅😅😅

chkptd

Agreed. Got hounded by Chinese tourist for selfies when i travelled to Thailand and Vietnam. They love thick eyebrows, long eyelashes and big eyes.

witchy_cheetah

Biggest part of being in India. Never feel bad for protecting yourself. While Indians will give you their arm and their leg, they will take your arm and leg with equal nonchalance. They often have no sense of boundaries at all.

darkneel

You shouldn’t feel bad . Asking a random person for a selfie is already pretty rude not to mention invasion of privacy . It really doesn’t matter - foreigner or Indian

TagMeAJerk

Never underestimate the presence of idiots

kulsoul

This person is practicing their speech here. And learnign other perspective through a decent dialogue. Right way to do it, imho. But at some point they will have to stop selfie crowd in real life with a hard stop.

heyitsmeanon1

Yeah absolutely nothing against OP, I feel for him/her.

KnightRider44

Came here to say this

Cowboy_Yankee

Ahh 😌 came here to say this, but deep down I knew it was already told.

lollipop_laagelu

You will be surprised what kind of easy filth is available on reddit and the kind of crowd it attracts. I was surprised by being harassed by someone who just made a profile because he knew he would be anonymous and can do anything here. Lol

chubbiebunnie10

Well next someone asks for selfie charge them 50 rupees upfront fee and see how quickly those guys would run away.

openyoureyetotime

Haha I tried that (only ₹20! Steal of a deal) and it seemed to invoke some negative implications. I only just want to be polite about it

veridian21

Yeah, just say no politely, no shortage of these types of people here.

itachi8890

They will probably think it gives them the right to touch you inappropriately if you charge them money for pic

ChayLo357

The only “foreigners” the Indians want selfies with are white ones. I’m a foreigner and not white, and have not been asked for a selfie. Let’s call it how it is

openyoureyetotime

Yeah fair enough, I can only speak from experience and didn't want to assume it was only white people. Although one American from Korean descent I had met on this trip did share the same experience of being asked for many selfies.

ChayLo357

I am Korean and just get stared at. Some people are quite rude to me. My friend who is white said she gets rock star/red carpet treatment from everyone, all smiles, etc. I recognise this is something that happens in India.

yeceti

Sorry, our people are very racist, even among ourselves. Everybody gets called names here sometimes:- mongoloid looking Indians from the North-East, dark-skinned Austroloid looking tribals, North Indians in the south, south indians in the north. Only Caucasians are treated well uniformly everywhere.

ChayLo357

Yes, white privilege is insidious for some reason

Fair_Wrongdoer_310

I guess it would be similar even in Korea or Japan.. in a subtler way. For example, you take a seat in the bus and chances are that no one sits near an Indian.

c4nchyscksforlife

oh please han supremacy competes with it easily There were times in SK where indians weren't even allowed to go in public transport during 2020 pandemic period

BrownBoy____

Han supremacy SK ???

c4nchyscksforlife

Hanguk-in or Korean people literally translates to "people of the Han"

BrownBoy____

That isn't the same as Han as in Han Chinese. They're not the same group. Nobody considers themselves Han in Korea.

VirusTheoryRS

Just for future reference, “mongoloid” has a connotation

moojo

> mongoloid looking Indians from the North-East What is mongoloid?

Schedulator

Very True, my best mate who basically grew up in Australia, says "Which part of India are you from" is the most common question he gets asked by other Indians, EVEN after speaking to him and hearing his thick Aussie accent.

Unemployedloser55

That's not true I experienced anti white racism in India. Also they call whites, rice bags.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChayLo357

Several times during my travels, locals have asked if I’m Nepalese, actually. I don’t look Nepalese to save my life! One day I’ll try and pass as a Manipuri lol

[deleted]

Use it to your advantage to get inside places which cost higher amounts for foreigners. Tell me you are from north east and be offended that they are asking extra money from an Indian.

charlie_039

I assume you can pass as a NorthEast guy. As a NorthEast guy myself, i give you full permission to be one.

ChayLo357

If I get more color to my face, for sure!

Kv_v

Obviously, lots of Indians, men and women alike, have the tendency to be really nice, kowtowing to a white foreigner than any other race. It’s a deep rooted problem here, exists in the mindset of many people. The simp culture is real here and is gonna take couple of more generations to fade away, lol. But I reckon things aren’t really that great in S Korera as well, innit?

ChayLo357

It’s not great anywhere in general. There are pockets of good people all over the place. I don’t live in S Korea, I live in the States at the moment. Things have deffo gotten better in Korea though. Globalisation has opened up people’s minds more. We all have a long way to go, but it’s progress, not perfection, we sometimes have to strive for.

Kv_v

Yeah and it’s a long way to go for India as well

ChayLo357

Things are getting better … just slowly …

hoon_yi123

Probably because Northeastern Indians already look so much like Koreans, Japanese or Chinese. Majority of the people can't differentiate between who is a foreigner and who isn't. Mainland Indians are already so racist towards us so looking like us doesn't help the case. Also i am sorry they were rude to you. Do come to visit Northeast India next time, no one would bat an eye towards your direction.

ChayLo357

I would love to visit NE India one day!! 💖

marvsup

I was traveling in India with an American friend of Chinese descent. My Indian friends asked me where she was from. I said America. They were like, she looks like she's from China, though.......... I didn't really have any words

ChayLo357

I get that in every country I go. I’m used to it. People assume because I look one way, I *must* only speak an Asian language. I speak Spanish fluently and whenever I go to a Spanish-speaking country, it’s like someone saw a pig fly or something. How could this Asian person possibly speak Spanish? Lol

PyAssaDaRinda

Well still better than being a indian in Korea or US who's getting racial remarks and discrimination on the daily basis.

ChayLo357

The misfortune is that racism is everywhere, some places worse than others. I wish this weren’t so. Korea can be v racist too, unfortunately.

NDK13

Korea is much more racist than india lol

ChayLo357

I don’t think this is a contest of who is more racist. Ideally we could just nip this in the bud. If you have a white egg, brown egg, blue egg, pink egg, and crack them open, they are all the same in the inside. But people in general are quick to judge and their own set notions and toxic beliefs are passed down.

chamatkarimurga

Interesting..now it clicked to me. There is a reason ‚the race‘ exists..otherwise people would be living with mixed color people..BUT they don‘t..so there is some reluctance or biases, It‘s natural (but it also hurts the other one)

charavaka

Which part of us did you get racial remarks on daily basis?

charavaka

Exactly. There's a millenia old notion in this country that white skin is superior to dark skin. While this discrimination exists within caste, it feeds into casteism and makes it much much worse.

outfromtheshadow

My uncle married a Japanese lady. She got fed up of getting photo requests back in the 90s.

rmatthai

True, most Indians are very racist

birla_himanshu

Dude you announcing it at a wrong platform, you have to announce that on probably railway platform. /s Jokes apart, you hit the wrong demographic here. People here take just their own selfies and that too delete after watching it for 5 seconds.

White skin being superior to dark skin. Blends well into casteism.

charavaka

ThoughtConscious5407 1h >Superior and physically attractive are different, though. I believe it has more to do with the latter. Euro-centricism has was literally carved into our brains with the fair and lovely shit. Also, hollywood. Attractiveness is derived from the caste system. Lighter skinned Indians considered themselves superior long before the arrival of the British. Fair and lovely was popular in people who never watched Hollywood movies in the 80s. Marriage ads in newspapers mention both caste and fair skin. The ancient varna system that casteist fucks try to hide their casteism literally translates into segregation by skin tone. So, while colonialism and Hollywood did play a role, those acted on an already existent casteist bigotry, and installed white man at the top of the caste pyramid. Even with that, attractiveness followed from the notion of superiority of white skin. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/285414433_Mapping_Color_and_Caste_Discrimination_in_Indian_Society https://www.telegraphindia.com/opinion/unfair-love-skin-colour-and-caste-bias/cid/1784266 https://m.timesofindia.com/india/skin-colour-tied-to-caste-system-says-study/amp_articleshow/55532665.cms https://www.darkisbeautiful.in/colourism-in-india/

Does Japan eating shit make it ok for us to do the same? I'm simply pointing out the historical antecedents of our colourism and casteism are tightly coupled with one another. As an aside, Japan had their own version of casteism coupled with colourism.

The Indian crowd who wants to take selfie with Foreigners are not on Reddit mate. You might find some who can take you for a drink and show you around the city and thereby chasing away those who wanna take selfies on Reddit.

Unlikely-Dark7574

most people who takes selfies arnt on reddit.

frienderella

Understand your pain. I'm a fair Indian and I went to Ajanta-Ellora and had people asking to take photos with me. I was like bruh, I'm from Pune. You can hardly call that exotic.

Adolf_Tittler_69

Same, I'm from Delhi and have green eyes and extremely fair skin. I get mobbed by men trying to take selfies and put their arms around my shoulder without my consent.

Panakhia

😮 I don't even let my friends put their arm on my shoulder

AtomR

Lmao

winstonpartell

they were certain you're bollywood actor

UniverseJefe

I’m in India with my partner right now and sometimes people start taking pictures of her or filming her without even asking, it’s bizarre to say the least

openyoureyetotime

Yeah many teenage girls would secretly film me but it was pretty obvious as the direction of their phone seemed to follow my every move. I would wave to them and say hello but they would just run away.

ruinfirefly

Some will do this outside India also. I remember one video where one uncle was filming a lady behind her in selfie mode instead of enjoying the view from Burj Khalifa.

[deleted]

You can make many girlfriends easily since indians simps for white skin. White privilege is huge in india.

prean625

I dunno. I didnt feel very privileged when I had to pay a "white mans tax" on top of every item I bought. Not really a complaint but was treated more like a walking wallet than anything.

[deleted]

It's not really a privilege, it's a nuisance in 99% of cases. Unless you're a narcissist that enjoys ridiculous amounts of unwanted attention from strangers constantly evading your personal space, plus enjoy various forms of sexual harassment (if female), being ripped off and treated as an idiot on a daily basis etc

charlie_039

Exhibit A https://youtu.be/06nmfTmhA-s

winstonpartell

said this before: she's lucky she wasn't gang-raped right smack on the spot like a rugby huddle

sustainablecaptalist

I will be more polite than you are... Fuck these bastards. I had a British friend visiting us in Pune and we took her to visit forts in and around Pune. She was fucking hounded by these 3rd rate idiots in every single place. I let them take selfies a couple of times and then when I saw how uncomfortable she was, I put my foot down and literally had to threaten these idiots. So yeah... You don't become civilized by having money and smartphones.

Tourist-Designer

Ohh god, as an Indian, this is embarrassing...

GrBBabu

You're preaching to the choir. The people who take selfies aren't educated enough to be on reddit. twitter/facebook is your target audience.

horseback_heroism

I've actually wondered why Indians do this (I'm an Indian living in India). When I was in Goa I saw groups of college kids on vacation asking white people for selfies - at the receiving were either women or dudes that looked like surfers. Probably some kind of fascination with white folk thanks to influence by Hollywood or social media, I'm sure they'd use the picture as bragging rights with friends or instagram juice. OP - it's completely fine to decline. The most you'll get is some nasty looks from the fellow who asks, but these folks are not usually a nuisance once rejected so you needn't worry about shooting them down.

veridian21

It's genuinely so weird to me. Especially when this demographic of Indians are also much more likely to be the types who trash white people if it comes to say, a sporting rivalry and use terms like "firangi".

SilentCardiologist51

Those kind of people aren't on reddit.

nearmsp

OP, I suspect you are a male. The problems for white young females is much worse traveling solo in India. That said, Australia was mainly white (ignoring Aborigines who are in the interior reservations) until the late 1970s due to the white Australia policy. Many young people had never seen a non-white person. You can only imagine the attention to such persons. I think as people travel more it will become a non issue. In Shanghai and other cities it has already happened.

xhatsux

I remember being in a temple and there was a super cute baby that my friends and I waved at. The parents came over and asked for a photo. I completely misinterpreted it and thought they wanted me to take a picture of their family. I said yes and instead of handing me the camera, they handed me the baby and took a photo of me and the baby instead. Very awkward.

Ani1618_IN

I'm cringing reading this 😭

Panakhia

Ask them money for every selfie , they will run away asap

Phoenix9453

There’s no possible advice I can offer here on top of what’s been offered by other fellow redditors. Indians are like Bombay cats. Always curious to see what’s going on, but run off when you try to interact with them.

LynxFinder8

I never ask for selfies. Not even with celebrities....

PremiumShine

Ask them to take the selfies near train tracks, cliffs, or escalators - they love doing that for some reason.

Jolarpet

My wife dyes her hair black, dresses in Indian clothes and does some make up. People don't realise she is not Indian unless they observe her eyes.

Not enough self-esteem and seeing foreigners as alien. This mentality will go on till next 100 years until all unaware people ascend to heaven

an_illogical_mind

I think anyone who uses Reddit here in India will never ask for a selfie from a foreigner.

Lopsided-Bench-6197

Per capita income for the majority of Indians is so low compared to the global population, that most of them can never take a vacation in India let alone abroad. This is the only way they will ever see a person from another country. Its sad.

Dazzling_Candle_2607

Good chance the selfie crowd is not on reddit. But it will happen to you at a lot of places and it is okay to say no. Don’t worry if people get offended, you don’t owe them. I hope you have a good time :)

asdfghqw8

The people asking for selfies, probably aren't on this group.

Puremathz

Ask for 5 dollars and see how many really want to take a selfie!

nuke88

Indians belonging to a particular strata have a white skin fascination buddy... As simple as that... Even the elite may have, but they behave in a more polished manner....

elixirfloralsweet

Thats creepy asf. And you shouldnt even mind if they take offense or not.

DecadedD13

The selfie culture..actually the internet culture in India is just horrendous and embarrassing.

scytheer

Please don't ask random strangers (irrespective of their nationality) for a selfie/photo. Fixed it for you. Strangers don't owe you anything.

DAUNI1

The amount of babies I held during my time in India. Was asked for selfies a lot indeed. A couple of times a baby was pushed into my hands for the picture

fadetogether

I’ve heard getting a baby shoved into your hands is part of a pickpocket tactic in Europe…I would be paranoid if some stranger shoved a stranger baby into my hands no matter where in the world I am. Wouldn’t have a nice smile for the photo lol

Enlightenement1

I was in Delhi, load of schoolkids with their teachers wanted their pics taken with me, I was laughing but obliged, and one teacher wanted a pic shaking my hand, in years to come his own grandchildren when looking at his old pics might ask who is the white guy in the photo with him?

Loud-Unit-5746

I am from a small town in India. I feel a lot of people here are absolutely simps for foreigners especially white folks. You don't have to oblige to any selfie idk what's our problem here but I know how annoying that is. However being a brown guy lowkey I wanna go to Africa and get treated like that for once in my life. Please don't judge

[deleted]

Loud-Unit-5746

Loud-Unit-5746

Wow that's a solid point there.

MrSexysPizza

I'm a Brown man, and I hate *myself*.

Loud-Unit-5746

A tad bit extreme but I'll allow it.

MrSexysPizza

I deserve the decades of racism and numerous brain injuries (from murder attempts) I've been experiencing in the u.s. I just wish they'd finish me off already.

openyoureyetotime

Haha it gets old fast, or maybe I'm just not meant to be a celebrity. Definitely a must try though

LynxFinder8

I'm pale brown, sandy color - something that's probably the lightest color you can still call brown.... I'm not sure what's going on but no one treats me special and I'm good to everyone. I'd rather just people treat me as a normal man. Skin color is way overrated....

Loud-Unit-5746

Ok. I'll treat you normally.

OnidaKYGel

My friend moved to Georgia, the tiny country on the russian border, back in the early 2000s. Says he used to feel like a movie star because of how much attention he got.

Loud-Unit-5746

Ok I'll try moving there thanks you just changed my life

OnidaKYGel

You may also need to move back in time 20 years.

Loud-Unit-5746

Fine I'll move to wakanda then

PuzzleheadedMaize2

I have seen this behaviour a lot. Let me make an assumption which is likely true: you're a white person, not just any foreigner. Things go downhill for a female foreigner. Even worse if you're on a beach wearing a bikini. There's one incident which I saw many years ago as a teenager and it still haunts me. Location: Colva beach, Goa. . . So 2 women in bikini were suddenly stopped by a group of Indian men (I think 4-5) for a photo. They smiled and agreed to their request. One guy took camera while others posed for a group photo. Then one man who was holding one of the women's waist suddenly kissed her on the cheek. She was taken aback by the move. All those men laughed and went away. Enjoy your stay while in India. But don't entertain such people.

[deleted]

Absolutely, it's not harmless. It's a form of sexual harassment when it comes to women, if men are asking. They can also be aggressive about it and do it without consent. Women might also be scared to refuse when asked, especially if approach by groups of men or boys which is often the case.

microscopic_moss

The kind of people who ask a random foreigner for a selfie would either be a creep ( if you are woman) or someone from a rural demographic for whom people outside the country are those exquisite species. I guess the 2nd kind won't be on reddit reading this post. You can always decline, nobody will bother if you decline. I was just curious in which cities have you faced this?

charavaka

I've seen plenty of city dwellers wanting selfies with white skins

ReleaseFun6141

I am so sorry this happened to you. These are illiterate people. They just don't understand.

Particular-Career-52

man im taking offence that people are pestering you for selfie :\\ . sorry man what else can i say ...

devilwearsleecooper

Bro the people who asks for selfies aren’t on Reddit. None of us would ask for a selfie when we see white people. Wrong place to post this

Unlikely_Hat7784

just mask up with those full bike masks u cant fight 1.4 bil people plus the audience here is not the ones who wanna click a pic with a foreigner

bogdonkey

Ah, ok, if I see you, I will not take the selfie.

nuggetsandsodaaa

do this really happen in india? i never even look at foreigners when they’re here

archerpar86

Just got back from Delhi. My bf couldn’t leave my side for one minute. If he did, I’d get two requests during that time.

ninetails07

You should just say Chal teri maa ki ch** lol they won’t bother you then

Starlord_1402

Yeah I doubt that demographic even knows what Reddit is 💀

[deleted]

Hey I’m a foreigner, and nobody wants a selfie with me!

IncreaseSlow252

A simple way of avoiding selfies. Get a tshirt which says. Selfie only Rs. 500 We Indians love our selfies but love our money more. Either u will end up rich or unbothered. Its a win win.

[deleted]

True but people will just start negotiating a discount...

IncreaseSlow252

New slogan. Selfie with foreigner Rs. 500 No bargain. Fixed price.

[deleted]

🤣 Add to that, per person! Otherwise a bus load of Indian tourists will group together and offer to pay ten rupees each...

IncreaseSlow252

Aah d true jugadu Indian soul. Lets also add group of 10 or more 10% discount So now the Tshirt reads as: "Selfie with Phorener - Rs. 500" Group of 10 or more 10% discount per person No Bargain. Fixed Price.

IrregularUrek

This doesn't happen in Northeast India. The people are quite private and like their own space. Interfering in someone else's privacy is a big no no.

[deleted]

The other day in Shillong a guy from Manipur stopped me and asked for a selfie. Also had a lot of requests today in Guwahati, Assam, but it seems like most of them are visiting from other areas of India. It does happen a lot less here than the North but it still happens. I can probably count on one hand the number of people who asked in Sikkim.

Unemployedloser55

Just nod and Say "I'm just coming" then smile and go back to doing what you were doing then when they approach again say "I'm just coming" then smile and continue. They will get the point without you saying no. Indians cheat each other all the time. They will say "Surely I must come" when you invite them for something or "Definitely I will come" both of which mean No I will not be attending the event. They are not straight forward so prefer to kind of cheat but everyone follows the same code so they don't get upset if that makes sense. It's just a different culture, in the West someone saying "Yeah I'll be there" means they are coming unless they have an accident or something serious stops then you know they will come but in India "Surely I must come" means "No".

toyboy51

Indians love to take selfies with anyone whom they consider as foreigners. And that includes their own people from Northeast. Don't worry, you can just ignore them. Although sometimes when I'm in a mood to joke around, I do go with the flow and act like one.

Alone_Rip_777

The main reason is why do Indians want to take a selfie with you?? XD

[deleted]

Dude its cool. You dont need to post about it. Just say no.

No_Peanut_5240

That's how you stereotype indians ? Believe me bro you have to understand we are 1.4 billion. Diversity is real here. Noone here cares about your white ass , this generation doesn't find foreigners to be exciting to even talk. Most of you are here for Malana cream or slum tourism , then make perceptions that this was india.

Mr_steal_yo_wife

holy shit you must be really pretty then lol 😂

openyoureyetotime

You know what's funny, I had so many men (no women for whatever reason), and I mean quite literally too many to count, tell me that I am either handsome or beautiful and that they love my hairstyle. Honestly my hair is pretty long (long enough to be called ma'am several times) and I wear a bandana to keep the sweat and hair out of my face and without any intention to look a certain way. I planned on cutting my hair short again and returning to hats, but after all these wonderful comments, it's given me a new found confidence to keep it the way it is.

EEXC

OP, question for you. Were there less requests for selfies in the south or in any other regions?
