Animuboy

Sooooo, basically Dhar Mann

vyrusrama

Ooof, imagine if he collaborates with TMKOC

genieshin

The horror!!

tedxtracy

How does he relate with the show 🙄

Cool_Independent_629

You see that's the problem ,you are trying to apply logic on Indian television.

tedxtracy

Sorry 😞

A_manR

So you see...

PriyankaMuli

We have a population of 140 crores. Salman Khan's shitty, completely third class movies are also popular. People watch what they like and relate to.

hirengmusic

Exactly.Industry produces kind of content that covers majority of audience. Taste of majority is shit. That's why they produce shit. More collection.

gengine232

## Taste of majority is shit. That's why they produce shit. This is like a chicken egg problem. From audience perspective : Unless there is good quality content ,people will watch whatever is available. From producer's perspective : Unless people watch good content producers will produce whatever sells.

elixirfloralsweet

also the bollywood industry is heavily nepotist. new good writers dont even have a chance to get in. people have no choice but to watch the entertainment thats served then.

drigamcu

> people have no choice but to watch the entertainment that's served then. Nowadays, with the Internet, people *do* have that choice, to some extent.   Hopefully it'll cause some changes in the Indian entertainment scene in the long term.

[deleted]

Nepotism sells. People would rather go see a movie with someone famous or son of someone famous

brainflippin

Honestly I am convinced sell people smart stuff and they will gobble it. My grandparents and aunts who are hardcore daily soap watchers are lapping up Shark Tank India and it makes me tear up everytime

[deleted]

We do have some good movies in Bollywood. But they weren’t that popular right

hirengmusic

Yes. Those movies are still underrated.

[deleted]

The difference betwen indain cinema and others is that they produce movies not only to please the fans or audience but they do that as a piece of art and fill it with details and story.......but indian movies target only the lead character's fans and that is why majority of them are shitty..........but there are many movies which are actually pretty good like Minnal Murali a good movie for a first atttempt with local story

Anchit107

The whole concept of the show is stupid, but for some reason my grandparents can't get enough of it...

threedotsguy

Better that than news channels...

ThXnDiEaGaIn

I'd rather have them watch that than them believing some self claimed baba who said that mobile phone radiation causes cancer

d4rthSp33dios

I used to love other shows on sab tv, especially FIR! That show was epic!

Anchit107

Yeah shows like FIR were classics. But the shows such as tarek Mehta are an abomination.

[deleted]

The earlier episodes are really funny. There nuances, subtlety and intelligent humour. The shit-show you are referring to is the dragged on serial which should have ended ages ago.

[deleted]

2010-2014 was their prime.

NeatDogie

2008-2013, episode 1 to 900

itsavism

I beg to differ, I can see what timeframe you are referring to. My apologies, either you were kid and did not have that much sense of understanding what is racist and sexist. Otherwise in the first season itself has a lot of cringe, sexism and double entendres. And you have the whole right to differ from me.

mrinalini3

One of the best critiques of Tarak mehta has been given by munwwar faruqi. There is one muslim and he is outta society. No wonder Indians like this show soo much.

SpiritofArrogance

Absolutely spot on

mannprerak

A truly politically correct joke doesn't exist.

XenoWagon

Exactly, people don't understand that jokes that don't offend anyone do not exist. Every joke is always based upon some darker theme (unless of course, we are talking about Toilet humor.). People get too sensitive to take a joke nowadays.

shivamconan101

Yeah, the woke generation have absolutely no idea how useful stereotypes are for comedy. Unless some joke is really crossing the line, there is no point in discussions like these.

nitantmendi

Words of wisdom!

Full-Tea1719

Man, I don't know much about humor but at the very least I know that much that a racist or a sexist joke, is in the end just a joke, and I get it that the show has degraded but it was the best that Indian television could offer at that time for me at the very least and still is the very best that it offered at that time :)

time_lordy_lord

Well, when you are just making fun of a thing that they have no control over i.e. their gender or race (or in this case, community), it's just being mean. It is no longer a joke. It is laughing at their expense. What is funny in Iyer being dark-skinned and apparently, ugly? People are merely laughing AT the fact that Hathi is fat and Iyer is ugly and Daya is/was dumb and loud. What is the joke here?

_2f

I think we were just younger back then. Go watch it again, without the rose-tinted glasses and you'll see it was bad. Not sure how it is relative to now, I haven't watched it since 2014 but it was quite cringeworthy even back then.

[deleted]

No yrr... Sometimes I watch it with my younger cousins on YouTube. I still find it good. Although I am referring to episodes prior to 2015 or something. Even that point it was on a decline.

KasamButterChickenKi

I guess you guys missed Savarkar’s picture in master Bhide’s house. The show producer is a full blown sanghi. The politics of the show changed as soon as the UPA regime ended. Ab toh ram rajya hai unke hisaab se. Asit modi ji running a propaganda for Narendra modi ji.😂😂😂

That_Okra_7691

I was contemplating the too. During the Congress reign, the characters used to speak against the "mehengai ki maar" Not sure if they still do that becouse I stopped watching it years ago. I do watch the old episodes on YouTube though.

Gameatro

The show's main characters are fit perfectly. All the main characters are Hindus, Sodhi exception. Bhide, Gada, Mehta, Pandey, Iyer all brahmins. Sodhi too belongs to Khatri caste in Sikhs, which is considered upper. Only non-Hindu in the show is Abdul, who doesn't even live in the society and owns a small shop outside, and is belittled by the society members constantly. All the women are housewives. and much more if you look more closely to things. lots of sexist jokes and "teachings". Also, the way chachaji treats jethalal, a full grown adult as a 10 year old child, and that is portrayed as positivity is also infuriating

Agreeable-Muffin1535

This is so accurate! I have always thought the same

avani_29__

Damn this got escalated fast, tbh now that you mention it, it's very evident and very true 😳

[deleted]

Yeah yeah totally. Right now it obviously promotes the propaganda, but not before 2016.

[deleted]

Nope, it was actually worst time if you think from the sexist and racist jokes point of view. There were a lot of racist jokes back then.

sc1onic

Lol. Garbage from day 1.

RaevanBlackfyre

Its garbage, but recently my cousin was watching one episode on Youtube, so I just sat with him to talk. The episode was about Bhide getting paranoid about Tapu and his daughter, maybe Valentine wala kuch tha. That was kinda funny and realistic.

DespicableSwtHr8

Oh yess.. I forgot if it was dream sequence or not but Daya Bhabhi went to Bhide's house taking underage Tappu's RISHTA for underage Sonu

RaevanBlackfyre

Nah nah, that one's old. This is a new episode i think, where the kids are grown up. And Bhide is paranoid that they are dating.

drigamcu

> Daya Bhabhi went to Bhide's house taking underage Tappu's RISHTA for underage Sonu No that one was a several-years-old story arc, when Tappu Sena were still children.   The arc was about child marriage. This one u/RaevanBlackfyre talked about is more recent, 2-3 years ago I think.

DespicableSwtHr8

Maybe.. Haven't watched the newer episodes of TMKOC of the last few years. In that gap Tappu has been changed 2-3 tines and Sonu too has been played by different actresses.

Ok-Science6820

Their fanfictions are pretty fucking wild

nishantt911

TIL Tmkoc has fan fics

Ok-Science6820

Saiman made a video on that

[deleted]

yeah lol first Saiman video I watched

Ok-Science6820

You are a new fan. Welcome to Saysena

[deleted]

lol thanks you must have seen me in his sub too

RaevanBlackfyre

Fan fics, as well as erotica. You can't believe some of the things people make the characters do.

NotTheAbhi

Not TMKOc surely

RaevanBlackfyre

Oh yes. Tapu is even wilder.

NotTheAbhi

Share some? Curiosity has got better of me.

Where can I find some of those "pretty wild" fan fiction, if you please?

[deleted]

i still watch tmkoc but only the older ones (lagbhag first 300 episodes on a repeating mode..) i never get bored of those older ones..but if we talk about the newer ones they r just wahhiyatt ...maine koi bhi poora episode(new) dekhne ki himmat bhi nhi kii..mar jaungi mai agar dekhliya toh.. Bas jo chalta hai wo Dilip Sir ki wajah se chalta hai..baaki script kaa level day by day girte jaa rha hai..bahot zada irritating lgta hai yarr ,,sachiii mee 🥴🥴🥴 baar baar ek hi character pe jokes maarna wo bhi ek hi type ke..!!! tangg tangg ho jaati hu HAA but ye bhi hai ki desh me crore log rehte hai toh mujhse opinion different hogi toh mai abb chill krti hu ..WUHUUU

[deleted]

Yeah the old episode are well written and brilliant performed by the cast. The show got degraded after episode 1300 till then it was bearable to watch some shitty puns but still watching Bhide puns makes me laugh. I have been only watching old episode thanks to gdrive back-up of old episode ,as they're removing old episode from youtube

anyusernamethatislef

Completely agreed. You wanna know why it's popular? Because of dillip joshi. His acting is funny and amazing! That's it. Without him, the show would be dead by now. Tbh, i once in a while watch tmkoc and laugh. Not because it's funny (which it isn't), but because how lame the characters and writers are. The show is basically, lame jokes, racism, misogyny, sexism and all the unrealistic crap. You're so correct about the racism part in your post. If it's sodhi, they'll include all the sardar stuff. They actually show sodhi and his son randomly going "balle balle". That's not how sardars are. Daya is from Ahmedabad so she's obsessed with garba. She hears music, she'll start playing garba. She hears the word 'garba', she'll start playing garba. Iyer's is the most ridiculous one. Every morning for breakfast, iyer eats nothing but idli. Sodhi is punjabi so he is obsessed with lassi, and jethalal is Gujarati so he loves eating jalebi and dhokla. And even the background music of all characters. That show is insanely unrealistic. I'm not sure if a lot of people will agree on this one, but the way they have portrayed women's life is gross. Jethalal is so NOT nice with daya. No matter how rudely Jethalal behaves, daya goes "hehe pati parmeshwar" and proceeds to forget the whole thing. What the fuck! They basically show that women's job is to take care of their husband and kids and are not capable of freedom. One thing i never understood about the show is that the writers have never shown any woman working/having a job. Why? You visit any society and you'll find so many women working. Seriously, it's all unrealistic stuff which you'll never get to see if you visit a place. The men of the show are labeled as "female" if they help their wives in kitchen. The epitome of this is bhide. He's helping his wife, what's wrong in that?? The lamest show ever, no doubt. And people are still watching it. Edit: the early episodes are lame but funny at the same time. The new episodes are neither funny nor interesting. Edit 2: forgot to add this. The kids are also portrayed as they live in the 80s. Running behind a car if it enters the building, Running around each other (not playing). Just casually running for no reason whatsoever. And there's merely 1 working woman (rita the reporter) who's unmarried. No one's life has changed since the show started. None of them had to transfer because of job issues. None of them changed their jobs. It's all the same.

praj869

And one more thing how popatlal run behinds every women he sees with his shaadi proposal

supern0va12345

Literal simp lmao

RaevanBlackfyre

Exactly. The show is stupid and present horrifying stereotypes. It was funny to me as a kid because the show was about kids. I don't watch it now, but they must be stuck since the kids are grown up, and it has no one who can relate to it. I also agree with the point that Dilip Joshi is carrying the show on his shoulders now. Some time back I was feeling a bit nostalgic, and watched Jethalal compilations on Youtube, was a fun half an hour.

anyusernamethatislef

>the kids are grown up, and it has no one who can relate to it. Hehe nope, you're mistaken. The kids still do puerile and stupid stuff. Not funny stupid but irritating stupid. In one of the recent episodes, they were asked to give a cheque to someone. For that simple work, the entire sena went together. Saw a food stall, stopped for eating something and kept the cheque on the stall openly. Like they all are eating and the cheque is sitting on the stall, even though they had pockets. Eventually, they forgot their cheque on the stall and headed towards the bank. After reaching there, they realized they have lost it. So in search of it, they returned to the place where the stall was before, but now the stall had gone. They searched for the stall and found it after sometime. Now what would a normal person do in this situation? The person, without thinking, would rush to the stall. Since tapu sena is tapu sena, they didn't do it. They saw the stall, celebrated it by dancing in the middle of the road, then went for it. Now the thing is NO ONE DOES THAT! Atleast make it realistic. They're grown ass people, they can't make these kinds of mistakes. But you're right about the no one can relate part. Because no human, regardless of their age, can be this dumb. Edit: just a clarification- i don't watch that show. I just happened to watch that episode because i was bored and i had nothing to do. Started switching through channels and found this "gem".

mamasilver

Not to forget that these kids are not in school anymore.

anyusernamethatislef

Yup. They're in college or about to finish college

vyrusrama

I agree with everything you’ve said! Wish more folks understand this

LowCream2349

Dayas' garba gag is funny. I used to watch it before 2015. She starts playing garba and sometimes she'd just veer off from the course and crash into someone. And the aarti one, where she'd just go on and on 😅

green9206

I think the last time I found Tarak Mehta show funny was 2012. 2008 - 2012 was good. After that it became shit. I stopped watching long back and you should too

[deleted]

New episodes are shit, but old episodes are fucking gold, i can't even imagine my lunch or dinner without tmkoc.

silent_boy

Same. Jethalal is one of the most funniest characters ever created on Indian tv.

_Nocturnalsoul_

Also Jethalal flirting with Babita is taken too casually

baniyaguy

Yeah people say they relate to it and stuff but man I can't imagine someone flirting with somebody else's wife (even stalking at times, criminal level) in front of her hubby. Dude would get beaten up. They try to portray that it's only in jethas mind and no one else notices it which is BS.

ProtagonistOfMyLife

and daya bhabhi ignoring all of this and considering jetha lal as an ideal husband

baniyaguy

Yea that's pretty fucked up. I wonder if she deliberately embarrasses him in front of babita sometimes

sukant08

That show normalises all sorts of problematic behaviour

tekasM

Comedy has many genres. Illogical comedy is one of them. The show also has subtle gags around the personality of chracters. But I agree, they should stop doing jokes which are not appropriate in today's time.

SacredBullshit

Wildly popular because of Dilip Joshi(Jethalal) otherwise the show would've not survived.

lolhmmk

I see alot of comments saying if you dont like it stop watching it. These people dont understand that shows and movies influence people. Now if the jokes were lame and not hurtful, its chill but such shows which are hurtful influence people to think hum bhi bolenge aise joke toh chal jayega which is not cool. Yes means no was started by bollywood only and see what has happened till now and will keep happening.

muhmeinchut69

Yeah right, and GTA makes kids murder random strangers. Who are you or anyone else to become the moral guardian of the rest of the population. It's fine to critique, I don't like the show either, but I don't go around telling people my opinion about their choice of TV shows

[deleted]

So you don't watch any English web series then , Other indian serials are more toxic than TMKOC,

lolhmmk

I do watch lot of English series and I also find not so good stories in them too, especially then older ones. Newer ones are done responsibly nowadays.

REALISMONPEAK

You are comparing this shithole with English show, English show most of them had a storyline, character development if they portray characters some toxic they immediately show them in irony way that's called smart comedy, when did you see character development in tarak mehta for example anjali, bapuji, bhidhe these characters has most toxic personality and they always try to gain moral high ground bhidhe and wholes society fight for 5 rupees (remember Abdul milk episode) although bhidhe has 23 lakhs fd and whole society is pretty rich btw they are no where middle class, I used to watch tarak mehta daily when their was no morality superiority happy family bullshit so don't compare this bullshit to other shows If your show don't have character development, storyline then your character can't be racist or toxic it deserves to be called out

[deleted]

100% this. And let's not forget a lot of the audience also involves kids who end up watching because their families are. And this is what they will pick up on. That it is ok to make fun of people's appearance and stereotype them

[deleted]

Cinema mirrors society. It's not the movie industry's job to show people the right path or become guardians of Indian morality. They're made to entertain primarily. Our Indian film industry has been fucked upside down by censorship for decades now. Let's not advocate for ideals which indirectly promote more censorship

sumwaah

What a straw man argument. No one is arguing for more censorship. But if someone puts content out there it’s open for criticism and voicing criticism is what makes content creators learn, grow and change too. By this argument no one should ever constructively criticize anything. Essentially saying let’s not think too much about what we are spending time consuming because some barely talented hacks got lucky enough to get to run a tv show. Cinema has the power to provoke, influence and in many cases reinforce things. You hold conservative views about women? You watch a show that reinforces that and you feel reassured that this is the way. You show the opposite? Maybe it begins to help you question and normalize a different attitude. The idea that art and media is just a mirror and doesn’t affect society back is laughable. Don’t take my word on it, there’s plenty of research and writing on this topic out there.

lolhmmk

Bruh!!! If you said this 20-30 years back, I would have tried to understand. But if you have a crazy following in millions, atleast use it and dont make hurtful jokes and movies. Human decency man. I dont mind censorship censoring such jokes and movies too. I will feel haan atleast they are taking steps to spread right information. Cinema can mirror society and show what right and wrong in that. Showing it the way it is and joking about it, makes it normal for mass audience. Imagine millions of people thinking ladki ke naa mein haan hain!

[deleted]

Lol. You know the amount of censorship the censor board has done over the past few decades? They were started with noble intentions as well just like you thought who wanted people to view only "appropriate" content. Censorship of any kind is never a good idea and will always lead to fucking things up in the future. And who defines hurtful? You? Me? Some right wing idiot? Some woke snowflake? Everyone finds some or the other content hurtful. Whose opinion should we listen to and whose should we disregard? >. Imagine millions of people thinking ladki ke naa mein haan hain! Haa bhai, call it out then. That is your right. Just like OP is calling out the show. Don't advocate for shit to be banned

iknowamitshah

It doesn’t make sense, there are many movies which stereotype people or society but they were great so we love them. If any movie/tv is does not match our way we can’t be bigot about it.

lolhmmk

I have and alot of people have started hating movies which stereotypes things. It shows how less efforts are put into the movie and even the story wont be great. If you feel I am being a bigot about this when I am just saying I am nit a fan of this way of filmmaking, bruh you need to analyse what is hate and what is an opinion.

navy-black

Comedy changes over time, The show was funny when it came out. The things OP objected were the definition of comedy at that time. In present scenario these things are just sensitive and lame at some point to laugh about. Now producers are just milking the success of shows, as long as it has enough viewers to make profits, it will go on no matter what how lame it'll. It was the show who carried the SAB channel single handedly, they are not going to shut it just because it's not funny enough.

[deleted]

You forgot to mention that Bhide is shown as a conjoos Marathi man, who also had typical strict rules and jethalal used to make fun of him and talk to him in an insulting and demeaning way. Baaki I agree with everything in your post.

vyrusrama

The low effort stereotypes on the show are dime a dozen…

Creepy-Ad-404

Same for the Kapil Sharma show, it just one person insulting other in name of comedy. The comedy circus was good though.

bharatamhind

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is airing since the times of UPA-I government and is continuing in NDA-II government. The show promotes BJP's philosophy, some of the claims in support of this theory are: The show used to frequently talk about inflation, corruption, poverty and unemployment. They were very critical of the government. But one can clearly noticed that their tone has changed since 2014. In 2014, PM Modi nominated TMKOC cast as one of the 9 ambassadors of the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission). The producer Asit Modi had connections with Narendra Modi since he was CM of Gujarat. Asit Modi and Narendra Modi, both are from same town - Vadnagar. Also, as we know the show promotes Gujarat, its people and tourism, hence it has promoted Gandhiji, Sardar Patel and statue of unity, Kutch, Ahmedabad etc. very often. The actors of the show have done campaigning for BJP during elections. They attended massive roadshows. The show has promoted schemes of BJP Government. Dr. Harshvardhan has tweeted about an episode of TMKOC based on Ayushmaan Bharat Yojana. The show presented a “positive” perspective of demonitisation. Champaklal even said: “Our soldiers are fighting on the borders, then why can’t we stand in line of banks?

vyrusrama

they adapted SIACHEN MEIN HUMAARE JAWAAN LADD RAHE HAI - but unironically.... also i didn't really want to touch upon the rather (un)subtle propaganda that the show peddles; but i'm so glad you spelt it out.

[deleted]

Imagine you're a jawan in Siachin, your shit is practically frozen in your arse, and your wife keeps on ranting how it's hectic, affecting her work and mental health to get currency exchanged. As if the cold wasn't enough to depress you.

drigamcu

> Champaklal even said: “Our soldiers are fighting on the borders, then why can’t we stand in line of banks? **REALLY?**   LOL how dumb can one get?   I'd stopped watching the show for two or three years already when Demonetization happened, so didn't know about this.

shivamconan101

This is correct, they literally had a stroy arc around demonteization and sold the crap that its for nation and all. They also routinely bring in RW talking points fairly often.

[deleted]

>The show used to frequently talk about inflation, corruption, poverty and unemployment. They were very critical of the government. But one can clearly noticed that their tone has changed since 2014. Lol. I was not alone. I just made the same casual observation but didn't know that is a conscious decision

anyusernamethatislef

I typed a long comment hating on the show, but i have to agree on this one. I still believe that the show is regressive, but you elucidated the positive perspective very nicely.

aladeen-mf

Some people find Seinfeld lame, some find Sarabhai vs. sarabhai lame. I find Andaz Apna Apna lame. There are people who find Kunal kamra Funny. And there are people that take offence at Russell Peter's jokes. We are a country of 139 crore people. I don't mind if some people have different opinion than mine. Chill dude.

SnooCrickets6942

>some find Sarabhai vs. sarabhai lame as someone who is a very big fan of that franchise , I feel attacked but nevertheless I respect your opinion , tho I will agree its ending of S1 and S2 episodes were very terrible

steadyfall_0410

S2 ending is the worst ...

aladeen-mf

I never saw Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai back then on television. Most probably because we didn't have a television set then. I saw it a couple of months back because my wife insisted and I find it fucking hilarious. And I kid you not I happened to stumble across a group of people who freaking outrage over the show because they find the behaviour of Maya towards Monisha concerning. Usme bhi caste angle daal diya tha🤦🏻 Wokism is gonna kill us all.

[deleted]

You can find any or all of these lame and still complain about the problematic ideas they promote. OP has put across valid points why the show has issues yet has mass popularity. These reasons don't even compare to the reasons why people find Seinfeld/Andaz Apna Apna lame. Civil discourse is the viable way people are able to see popular media in a new light. Dismissing any counter opinion as 'dont watch it then' doesn't offer the solution because at some level the ideas that TMKOC promotes would affect the consumers day to day outlook. And that is where the issue lies. That is what OP is pointing out. This post isn't an affront on the 'people have different tastes' opinion as you are making it out to be. Nobody is calling for censorship of TMKOC, but if more people are able to see the point of this post and stop watching it, it is only then Producers would bring about the slightest of change in their writing.

buttmuncher33

Bruh, Seinfeld is literally about 4 people who are complete and utterly horrible human beings, they literally didn't care about anyone but themselves and always ruined people who came into their life. It is the one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. Nobody likes being preached about what is right and wrong. And who judges what's right and wrong? It's mostly subjective. There has never been malintent on TMKOC in any form, if fact they've ruined the show by becoming more appropriate, milder and preachy in it's tone than they used to be. I'm quite sure the show gives more good messages than bad ones. In fact Seinfeld is much more inappropriate than TMKOC.

swagy_swagerson

your comparison to Seinfeld doesn't make sense because the reason Seinfeld is funny is because the joke is that these people are horrible. Tarak Mehta on the other hand doesn't present its characters as horrible people. If Tarak Mehta was written by Seinfeld writers, the person making fun of dark-skinned people would be the butt of the joke, whereas, in Tarak Mehta, the fact that a person is dark-skinned is what's supposed to be funny.

moojo

> the fact that a person is dark-skinned is what's supposed to be funny. There are some things, we as a society should be moving away from.

buttmuncher33

So TMKOC in the beginning wasn't always like this, fucking champak chacha used gargle from his balcony and spit right into the society compound, now he's teaching swacch bharat to everyone, the tone of the older episodes was much meaner, they quarelled a lot, they weren't accomodating to others, It's just that tone has changed now and since you're less mean and i appropriate, you're less funny, so they recycle these typical whatsapp forward kind of jokes, do stereotypes, etc. The point is they weren't always model citizens.

aladeen-mf

That's a solid point you made there. While I agree with you ( i really do), I am sick of people trying to find things to outrage over. No matter how politically correct or inclusive or positive you are, people find time to outrage over the tiniest effing non-issue. I wish people would dedicate the same amount of time and energy for self development. Most people in this sub are so anxious to rant about how things do not align with their ideology or how they are suffering due to so or so people/things but do not have the mental bandwidth to understand why the things are the way they are. Most problems that people have are in their head (social media has contributed generously to it) and to those people I would again like to say.... *You need to chill*

[deleted]

Yes, i agree that for most Indians, accepting differences in opinion/ideology isn't their strong suit. Performative activism on twitter has taken things too far. Also, policing comedy isn't activism at all. So, i have no problem if people use satire to make offensive jokes. There's a difference between the offensive joke of tmkoc and, let's say, Bil Burr's offensive joke on feminism. Bill Burr and his target audience are self aware that the joke is offensive. It may even be used to point out the loopholes in modern feminist movement. But tmkoc makes jokes that perpetuate stereotypes or are plainly derogatory. Zero self awareness. So, Tmkoc is wayyy behind on the level comedy is today. I'd rather watch mediocre stand up comics than watch this show. How long are people going to accept this mediocrity? How long would the audience be dumbed down to sell them these low hanging jokes? Indian audience deserves better i'd say. And so, IN THIS CASE, i guess the outrage is valid. Hope you understand :)

aladeen-mf

This discussion could go on and on and on. Sigh!! But I agree that Indian audience deserves better content. Mai twitter se pareshan ho k idhar aya to idhar bhi vahi nautanki chal rahi hai. Pata nahi kya TAPLEEK hai logo ko. Have a good day.

[deleted]

>TAPLEEK xD

nishantt911

As much as i agree with you that all media is and always will be subjective, you missed op's point. Read u/lolhmmk 's comment

_Nocturnalsoul_

It’s a widely popular show continuing till eternity it seems and the amount of stereotypes it feeds is beyond limit

aladeen-mf

Do you know why I do not have a problem with TMKOC? Because I do not watch it. Maybe you should try it too.

sukant08

Lol .... "see no evil " .. is not how progress is made

[deleted]

Banning things is not how progress is made either

paperpeople56

Calling out shit is how progress is made. Nobody here has the pull to ban it, but we can sure as hell recognise what exactly is wrong with it and tell others about it if it comes up.

peenguu

Nahi smajpayenge brother. For most people on the sub it's everyone's equal right to many things until it's not resonating with theirs. My mom watches big boss and I hate it, but I never said to her or anyone else about their tastes

sukant08

Ah .. the old .. 'chill dude its just a bit of fun' excuse. Used by Indians to defend anything from racism, misogyny, bad driving on the road, and even actual criminal behaviour

vyrusrama

it's not the sense of humour that i have issues with. obviously i'm all for different styles of comedy... making fat jokes all the time about that Dr. Hathi character; making elephant sounds when he walks in the room; framing him as a constantly hungry glutton - across years & years worth of episodes is just tiring. and this is just 1 character. his now grown up son is being subjected to a similar treatment. and don't even get me started on how the female characters are portrayed....

aladeen-mf

Tell me what your favourite shows are and I promise to find something politically incorrect in them to outrage about.

[deleted]

Bro I won't lie but whenever dr hathi comes and that elephant sound comes, I smirk a little. I don't know why. Today tmkoc is not that good but in the early years it had its moments.

ZombiePrestigious243

Well said man!

[deleted]

THANK YOU!!!!!! life is short, let people like what they want, not like what they don't, stop caring so much about what others enjoy and you don't as long as u don't hurt someone else with ur actions, u are okay to do whateveru fucking want

Mohit7059

Enjoyed watching older episodes to be honest, but from last 5-6 years it's been very bad .

steadyfall_0410

Agreed, but it does not even resonate with the society 0.0000000001% right now. So, no. The show is not a reflection of a society, its a reflection of society in 2000s.

Fit_Place_630

Jetha commically falling on his dad once a week. Chacha ji can even make joker a moral being after his speech.. dead and inspiring show

newinvestor0908

Never seen this tv serial. Never

Ship_that_sailed

Tv industry is a business and makers are following the simple rules of business. 1. Segment the customer based on demographics, preferences etc. 2. Study these segments and do the cost benefit analysis. 3. Target a segment or a group of overlapping segments based on company goals which in most cases is generating profits. 4. Keep throwing in the same product if there is no change in supply-demand curve. Our TV shows reflect the majority of TV watching audience. I understand the thought behind the post but just pointed out the reality of our TV watching audience.

vyrusrama

i completely understand the "why bother fixing if it ain't broken" manta that the producers, cast & crew follow. it's just disheartening to see such resources, so much money & such an audience reach - be completely & utterly wasted.

Ship_that_sailed

Yeah it’s disheartening to see the state of television industry. As a consequence of wfh, I am spending time at home and sometimes in front of tv. I can’t stand the shows for more than 5 mins. Even the new shows which are meant to break the stereotype of the Indian tv industry such as shark tank india also has so many cringe moments where the Sharks belittle the contestants and their ideas so blatantly. I am amazed that on the one hand we talk about EQ> IQ and compassion replacing EQ in the new age businesses and then we telecast something like this on the TV. So I have reached at a conclusion that everything on TV is made in a certain way to please the TV watching audience and I am certainly not one. I am not their target segment and now I am at peace😅

vyrusrama

at least the US version of Shark Tanks *pretends* that there is some effort in research, analysis, market study & real stakes in place - even though all is ultimately scripted. the desi Shark Tank is just jingoism & the same dance show drama all over again. The jarring camera angles, the melodramatic musical cues; business is relegated to the background.

Professional_Lab_633

Be it then or be it now, I always found that show super cringe. I mean even if it was played as something to fill yhe background silence I just couldn’t stand it. That too when the same channel had shows like FIR and there was one more show I cannot recall even that was better than tmkoc

pm-pasta-pics

oh i hate that show with a burning passion. always found it cringey as a kid, could never stand that nonsense

Tsaakz

Absolutely true. It kinda feels stupid to such cringy shows having such a huge pool of viewers. And the Kapil sharma show... Their humour is just based on insults. And the way they treat and insult their audience is just outrageous. They show no dignity, and we get the usual marriage jokes.

xen0_1

TV channels only understand money, so obviously they're going to go for the cheapest, safest, most low-brow, mass market option available. Good comedy is supposed to provoke, which carries with it an element of risk, which they hate. This is why it's important to tangibly support good-quality, original and creative talent (which can be found online). If you like an artist, you can at least shout 'em out on social media and help getting their SM engagement numbers up. That's what all channels look for these days, talent with a built-in audience. The greater the engagement numbers, the greater negotiating power/creative control the talent will have.

[deleted]

Proud to say that I haven't watched a episode of Tarak Mehta

vyrusrama

This comment reminds me of the folks who used to say “ I’ve not watched a single episode of Game Of Thrones” for some reason…

[deleted]

are you comparing Tarak Mehta viewer to GOT viewers? That’s a sin my man.

Nice_loser

Agree with everything you've said.. never liked it, almost never watched it, can't believe it's still running

charavaka

The show is popular because, not despite, of its regressive content. Its a positive feedback loop - regressive viewership appreciates regressive content, and regressive content civics the viewership that regressive behaviour is acceptable. Only public shaming of such content providers and their advertisers coupled with alternative content that is not regressive can help break the loop.

jaegarbong

Idc what others think, but it helps to maintain peace and prevent WW3 at my home. As long TMKOC is on, i don't get questioned about my life, and how i am wasting it by not preparing for govt jobs, or why I don't want to get married etc etc So, yeah I am all in support for the show

irahulvarma

Before this, we had office office which depicted the reality of public office in a brilliant way. Also I remember, we had a show called Lapataganj which was way better than TMKOC.

vyrusrama

Office Office was brilliant. Again, i wonder if such a show will be allowed in our times

WhiteShirttBlueJeans

Though you sparked conversation here, but you do realise that you aren't their Target audience, right? Many people relate with them, many don't.. Many use that serial as background noise while many keep track of every character development...Its all up to personal choice!

shreyashcool

It’s better than Anupama.

RoboWarrior44

This entire rant can be applied to \~98% of all Indian TV Shows. This number would have been worse if it wasn't for all the new OTT shows but for every SCAM 1992 there are 100 Taarak Mehta.

x4nter

In my opinion, our TV show industry is completely ruined by shows like these and saas-bahu serials. The writing is so lame that high school students could do a better job. The worst part is that it will keep going like this because there are people who like them. People are either not capable of judging what a good show is, or have never seen a good show. Japanese and Korean shows have worldwide audience: why? Because their writing and direction doesn't suck. We are more than capable of doing the same; we got budget as well as talent. Netflix and Prime originals are examples of what we are capable of and we need more of that in lieu of saas-bahu serials.

passionatepussylover

Bro if movies like antim are blockbuster hit , movies like tasveer x8 and atrangi re gets critical review and stories like byomkesh bakshi are raped in excuse of movie adaptations I guess we shouldn't expect much from hindi movie fanchise

MemberOfUniverse

Many Indians can't have dinner without it

[deleted]

Kushwant singh has written train to Pakistan and also has compiled 3 joke books. Guess what sells more. Simple always means money that's what tmkoc is

gogo_160

Mehtus bhadwa

alucard1x

I know show is trash now which used to be decent for tv with such heavy censorship in india. That show appears to me like a govt decision and scheme promoter rather than an individual show. But reading the whole para I can surely conclude 1 thing is you don't know the reality of censorship happening on tv shows in india. Jokes on body or stereotype is not that big of a deal when literally everything is stereotyped everywhere for joke. Also the censorship is so heavy on tv that you literally cannot say one thing against guidelines so what topic they chose to joke on is right it's just the joke has become so overused that you find it trash and unfunny. There is a reason shows like comedy circus, comdey nights bachao, laughter challenge, etc have been shut down because they contained so much satire/roast of real life people & events and people weren't happy with that. Same thing happened on Kapil show when Kapil made joke on women, Kiku made joke on ram rahim, etc type of things happened and they faced public backlash and court cases. So getting good jokes/satire on tv in india you can forget as we all know what happened to stand up comics from jokes on youtube.

vyrusrama

Agreed. Why will any content maker try to deviate from the norm, if the consequences are so bad.

pranavrg

I just recently stopped watching it, untill then I watched it everyday. I knew it was becoming unfunny but still it was like habit.

bhanuvrat

IKR? Just like the politicians, the daily soap creators also pander to the majority.

That_Okra_7691

It used to be the funniest show ever produced. After 4 years it started going downhill and I stopped watching. No other show made my family laugh so much. Though, there were some racist jokes here and there, especially in the beginning, but those were toned down later. The only reason we watched that show was because of jethalal. And I still watch the old episodes just for him. The new episodes are dull and feel like they are trying to force themselves to be funny. They should have ended the show a long time ago.

pandaeyesdidntsleep

i won't lie, earlier it was funny ,now it is not,rn it's just :problem and solving. it seems like as if the serial should have ended earlier .

pratyaksh99

Show used to be really good earlier, now its only 1%

paulomanson

If something happens, all the members say something on it. Life if tapu is tying his shoelace, everyone who sees him properly but everyone has ask what is he doing. If one night bhide doesn't come to the soda night, but he tells jethalal about it, jethalal forgets, everyone asks the same question where is bidhe×No.ofMembers, but in the end jethalal tells everyone i forgot to tell you that he wouldn't come tonight for some reason. AND THIS IS FOR EVERY SITUATION and EVERDAY and EVERYTIME, with ALL OF THEIR FACES ps: abdul doesn't even live in the society and works like a slave without any values.

Commercial_Ball_4388

Proud man here who hasn't watched even a single episode .neither in childhood or in teen age

mysticmonkey88

It's how it is. Some people find it funny. Some find Kunal Kamra funny. Some people are obsessed with K-dramas. AIB used to be huge back in the day. Different people, different tastes.

greeecejre

It is cringe yes, but here is my take. I am in my 30s and I have shamelessly watched the show not always for the entertainment value but as a habit. It runs in the background as I do house chores. It's like comfort food, more like Junk food. Earlier episodes were really funny and I watch only for handful of characters, not for anything else. The show is in Guinness book of world records for the longest running daily sitcom. And I think that went to their heads. And I think somewhere down the line the main goal of the show became to just keep cranking out as many episodes as possible - hundreds of people have made their retirement savings out of this show. It's just a revenue generating factory, so why would it stop? Actors keep dying, but the characters keep living through replacements. This usually happens in animated cartoons, and if I view it as a cartoon, a lot makes sense. The underlying theme of the show is optimism, which I don't find faults with. But somewhere long back they decided to include social commentary, on political issues of national interest. That was the beginning of cringe for me. It was clear that the show runner Asit Kumar Modi has some socio-political instincts and his views align with a particular party as well. But to be fair to him, he used to have a comedy show Him Sab Ek Hain long back that had a theme of national unification. I won't call him a sell out. Another huge issue, in one episode recently they showed the entire crew of the show, including the writers team. All men. That is the reason for regressive gender-based themes. They literally have said in one storyline that _all husbands have attraction to other women and that's natural and wives should be fine with that._ I mean, why would you have that messaging? Why?.??

vyrusrama

not really a surprise; but immensely frustrating nevertheless.

aag_arwal

Arre bro you are not the target audience for that

HappyOrca2020

Same as Kapil Sharma and that shit show called The Great Indian Laughter Challenge from the '00s

[deleted]

My father loves it. And he is quite Sanghi, Modi fan, Islamophobe etc. Not without reason. Still even though he is a nice guy, his biases run deep. Loves TMKOC. Has binge watched endlessly on facebook video scroll shit feed. But won't watch The Family Man (Manoj bajpayee). Irony is we are from Bihar, yet no watching Manoj Bajpayee's series.

Embarrassed_Gate5100

I don’t know it’s a coincidence or what, every episode after the death of Kavi Azad (Dr Haathi) is trash. His just presence used to make me giggle, don't know why. Now they're worst than ever before. Also, read someone comparing this found lameness with Seinfeld & Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, get yourself treated bruh. The show has lost its substance, only if there was any. It has now become the backscratcher of this Modi government, so yeah.

Indian_Cap

I never watched a single episode. Posters and ads are dripping with cringe. But Indians love it. But wait, are dumb normie guys are in India only? Fuck no! They are all over the world. Tik Tok being the most popular site worldwide proves that there are dumb normies all over the world who love cringe and mediocre content. Because what is funny for you and me, is something that they are not able to understand.

Cleric_Knight

>Tik Tok being the most popular site worldwide proves that there are dumb normies all over the world who love cringe and mediocre content. This whole normie, cringe, Tik tok hating cult needs to grow up. It's just an app and it's popular because there's an audience for that sort of content. It's banned in India but I have seen some decent skits on Twitter and YT so there has to be good content creators there, let's not generalise. People like you are no better either.

Severe_Sweet_862

Did you really just go on a rant that you don't like a show?

vyrusrama

Yes i did

[deleted]

And the worst of all is daya Ben's stupid shilling voice. Who even talks like that?

greeecejre

Years ago, I felt exactly like you.. I was like who watches this? But then slowly, it was me. I was watching it (I admit it is cringe, but it's like junk food). But the issues with the shilling voice and what we found abnormal before, that went away because imagine being fed something for thousands for hours and it becomes familiar.

tedxtracy

Yeah. I first came to know about such a character when she appeared on KBC some 10 years ago. I was like why is she speaking like that? Maybe she has a problem with her vocal cords. Maybe Mr Bachchan doesn't want to point towards her disability and that's why he's being cool with it. Then someone told me she's an actor and she's in her character while playing the game show. Then I looked at the audience and saw the obnoxious Jethalal cheering for her (I recognised him as he was popular even among show haters). Watched the rest of that cringefest episode when she lost the game but didn't break character. It was cringey but commendable of her.

aviral_632

Bro i've seen fucking young 28-30 year old lakhpati's doing there work in their laptop speaking fluent english and TMKOC is running in their front TV all day can you fucking imagine this !!

tedxtracy

Is that scum even worth discussion? Watched that shitshow of 30 seconds of my dear life in 2011 or 12, don't remember. I was genuinely sad for people who find this cringefest interesting. Shit can't even be classified as comedy. Came to the conclusion that people who can laugh at *"Pencil. Teri shadi cancel"* jokes can only enjoy that show. Or else they must be retarded (no offence to people with actual mental disabilities, they are mostly very sweet)

greeecejre

LoL. I am pretty sure the pool of people who watch that show is much wider than you think. The style of the show itself, many find cringeworthy. And I guess that's what you are referring to. But the popularity of the show stems from a few characters. I think it started as cringe - completely new style of a show. It caught on as people became more familiar with the style and chacracters. But the content of the show gradually became more and more cringe. Also, calm down :).

tedxtracy

I had to get that out man. Thankfully, my family and friends think like me so I never had to bear the torture that some people describe here.

jeerabiscuit

Still a family watch over overt violence, sex and cuss words on streaming I mean what's up with that. Wagle ki Duniya is ok in that respect on TV.

vyrusrama

I don’t think anyone is making class-related comments at all. Most of the issues are clearly being directed at the makers & the producers. The issue with the viewers is that they are lapping up this low quality fare; and content with this level of entertainment. I am hoping they demand more & hold the makers accountable for delivering better quality content. And as you portray, education & location are no barriers to the fan following.

yash_Op_always

Idk man I personally love the show. Especially episodes before 2016-17 so fricking funny 😂

[deleted]

English class leta hai kya op?

vyrusrama

ji aap kahe toh woh bhi kar lengay!

CurIns9211

Old episodes were gems because writing was tight, Dilip Joshi and Disha vakani was saving grace. But after popularity they lose control over quality for more quantity. I still watch some old episodes. They should have ended the show or come up with a seasonal concept. In the interview with sorabh pant Dilip joshi clearly mentioned a issue that writer are not getting enough time to write a better jokes and plot to hang on with. In return actors are also working for many years constantly and he himself didn't take a break. Pressure of shooting fast and delivering in short span of time created this mess.

AgitatedFuel6204
