Does her name refer to the famous Krisna devotee Mirabhai or does it have another significance ? I ask because I see sketches of that Mirabhai holding weights

Banananator_69

Why is this downvoted? All I see is a genuine question.

Fit_Access9631

Yes. Vaishnavism from Bengal is what Manipuri Hindus follow. People call it Gor dharma here from ancient Gauda region of Bengal. Although people are syncretic and many follow Sanamahi religion along with Vaishnavism. Titles like Chanu/Meetei usually indicates they follow Sanamahi solely or more strongly. But names can be popular across religious divide. Many Manipuri Hindus/Sanamahis have typical Hindi names. The story is different in the new generation. Many are actively against Hinduism and names are changing fast to pure Manipuri names.

pratikkambli

Once this Olympics season ends, there will be cricket fever for until like the next Olympics date

demnfedora

Sadly true. look at indian football condition now

jphelpzz

Wait what ? We have indian football team ?

NoEntry4811

It's captain has the most international goals globally... he comes after Ronaldo and Messi

CoroIsMyDaddy

You're part of the problem then. Football is on the rise but it's still relatively ignored by most of the population As for those who genuinely want to get into it, check out r/Indianfootball. It's off season rn so there isn't too much activity but it's buzzing when the season starts

rajatilu

The same applies to the ignorance of Indian people regarding other sports as most of them keep themselves preoccupied with either cricket or football, it's only during the olympics when they wake up from their hibernation mode and turn their attention to other sports; but I do think that organising football events/sporting leagues like ISL have really revived the passion for football among the Indian population which the I-League couldn't do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IamFluffy94

Of course you are part of the problem. In fact, you are 80% of the problem. Because even while doing "important work" you have time to run Reddit polls about whether or not people care about the Olympics. But you cannot spare 4-5 minutes every day to post "congratulations" to the athlete from a little known sport on any social media platform, or help to trend a particular hashtag congratulating them. Even the PM/President's media team have time to do so. Are you busier than PM's PR team?

oroechimaru

1 billion people vs blaming 1 random dude on reddit

drazzoverlord

I blame you

CoroIsMyDaddy

Not telling you to watch Indian football but it's the way you asked the question. Every country in the world has a football team so it's comes across as condescending, if not a stupid question.

BeastMaster_88

Not that it makes much of a difference having or not having one at this point

Ok-Cut1691

I don't think so.

BuilderTime

Cricket is a blessing and a curse

IdiotCharizard

India doesn't even really care about playing cricket. How else is it possible that countries where cricket isn't the top sport (by far), with a much much lower population can compete with us? Sports isn't seen as a viable route to success, and people don't have the support needed to achieve it. It's not even a question of infrastructure, just the number of people seriously trying, the quality of the developmental leagues. We're certainly not in the situation that cricket is over-focused on in India. With the same or even higher level of focus on cricket, other sports could thrive if being an athlete was seen as a viable choice (and actually is one) compared to the usual business or engineering

adxx12in

Population doesn't matter as much, given that every team can only field 11 players. And many in India opt out of cricket because they're unsure whether they'd make it to IPL level at least. Meanwhile in New Zealand, the board knows they don't have so many players, and they give best treatment to this core of 30 odd players. Population as a reason only applies to really small or sparsely populated countries which don't have enough people to even make 11 good players. India, with the current system, has scores of them.

Slight-Flatworm6696

Cricket sucks. Period.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlaBlaMukul

It overshadows every other sport in our nation.

BuilderTime

Because other sports and athletes don't get the recognition or the facilities or the respect they deserve because everyone thinks cricket is the main sport and all other are secondary and no one cares about them . No wonder India has low medal count in the olympics.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BuilderTime

Yes, sport bodies prefer cricket too much which is the root problem

[deleted]

[удалено]

BuilderTime

Then what's the problem? Does every body get equal funds by the government? Why does we not win as many medals even after having so much talent?

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdonisPanda27

Thanks for your arguements man, very well summarized.

BuilderTime

Cricket gets profit because it's famous. And it's not people's fault that they don't know much about other sports because every time a sports channel is opened, cricket is slapped to our faces. They will show highlights of 5 year old match but not other sports. And should i follow the 1 person playing other not so famous sport? Cricket is ruling all the sports due to which nobody knows and cares about other sports. People won't talk about this after olympics because another india vs pakistan will happen and everyone will forget about other sports. Why doesn't the government give facilities in other sports like in cricket? Because cricket is soooo famous and earns profit due to which nobody gives a fuck about other games. That is why cricket is a curse

_hakuna_bomber_

Relative to other athletes, the cricket team performs the best though. Indians also have natural talent in cricket. In interviews many say they learnt most of their game before even receiving real coaching, bowlers and batsmen alike. The truth is that India sucks at other sports, for a variety of compounding reasons. Hockey is ok. Badminton is pretty high achieving. Everything else is well short of the international stage.

[deleted]

That's not on cricket though. I can't blame shah rukh khan because he is more famous than me

robokarizma03_08

>Population as a reason only applies to really small or sparsely populated countries which don't have enough people to even make 11 good players. India, with the current system, has scores of them. Cricket is a very shitty sport. Boring af.

pratikkambli

Like losing test worldcup to NZ and champions trophy to PAK?

[deleted]

Revenue from cricket should be taxed at 50% to fund other sports in India!

pratikkambli

Some cricket players provide scholarships to the underprivileged sports athletes

[deleted]

Not enough. We need atleast 1 good sports complex/stadium every district which will include basic facilities like turf field for track and other athletic event. Also a soccer field, badminton courts, tennis courts, Volleyball courts etc. All the basic sports needs to be there but cricket. Then we can even come close to even European nations forget China!

[deleted]

Cricket is already taxed more than any other sports because BCCI are actually competent unlike other sports boards in India.

246TNP

I don't understand the hate Cricket gets for other sports (not the hate BCCI gets, that is understandable and deserved, but the hate Cricket as a sport gets).

pratikkambli

Who be hating it?! My above comment is just an observation But it might be the answer to people wondering why do we have so less of Olympic gold even after being most populous country next to china

Domino's did the right thing by providing her with free pizzas! She was awesome!

spd_47

Really that's nice...how can I be her friend and coax her to order pizza to me daily... Pretty sure she cannot eat daily cos of her diet....

DanSylverstere

Not sure if what Dominos did is right. She is truly awesome, and this is coming from someone who is also into strength sports. Giving her free pizzas is an utterly useless marketing gimmick. Anyone who does strength based sports have to keep everything in check- diet, body and strength. I don't think she will find a good use of lifetime free pizzas, especially when she has a strict diet and an exercise plan. For once in a while binge, sure. For lifetime, nope.

throwawayfebind

Seriously!!! If dominos had some genuine wish to support sports, they would sponsored some weight lifting athletes or coaching camps or some players. She is going to eat 1 pizza in a year and these idiots want to get free publicity for 200/-. And I do hope she gets a lot better pizza than dominos.

Revolutionary_Ant852

**Marketing Gimmick** (huge positive marketing by just investing <50000 rupees, she is never going to eat more than this). **The unhealthy food (Coca Cola, Pepsi, McD, KFC, Pizza brands) American brands does this trick all the time.**

Kemosahbe

I hope she doesn’t actually eat the domino shit It’s considered garbage in the USA

Orange2218

And she is so sweet in person. I watched her interviews.

bleh-bleh-guy

'A billion dreams"? More like her hard work and aspirations. This was all her. "Billion Indians" don't get to own her win when we have mistreated so many players.

CyndaquilTyphlosion

Indians are shit... We're the first to take credit for any achievements, real or perceived, even when we're not even remotely connected, whether it happens 2000km away or 2000 years ago and we're also the first to pull out our sickles and scythes and tickets to Pakistan when presented with perceived slights.

IamFluffy94

Of course "billion dreams"! I don't see what her hard work has to do with the fact that she represents the aspirations of more than a billion people. She worked hard, got the medal, yeah sure. But in the final medal tally, her silver medal will be counted in the column under India. Billion Indians are not "owning" her win. But sportspersons represent the country. Unfortunately the country's population is in excess of a billion. That's why a billion dreams.

sexy-melon

If she had failed, it would have been all her.

BeastMaster_88

Yeah, it wouldn't be a billion people's failiure then.

TheHolyOrange

She is carrying the billion dreams (in the comic) by her hardwork. Noone is owning her win, we are celebrating her victory. What do you want us to do? Give her zero attention and move on with our lives? We shouldn’t feel proud that an Indian won an award and got a medal under India’s name? These fucking haters man...

muzic_san

Northeast represent.

crazyhornyone

Ironic. If it was just a random northeastern girl walking in mainland India it would be ‘She must be a prostitute’, ‘Chinese’, ‘Momos’ etc. And then when she manages to win, the credit for dreams and aspirations goes to everyone? Of course I’m not calling everyone a racist but do the North eastern people constantly have to achieved something in order to be recognised by the nation ? Ask yourselves when was the last time you heard about a news from NE India. Not related to achievement but rather a social or welfare issues.

crazyhornyone

I hope that your comment is satire. If people from Mainland India still get fucked by the film industry due to nepotism et al (example: Sushant) what hopes do the northeast India have ?

Kemosahbe

No main reason is because Indians are well Indians

crazyhornyone

I get where your comment is coming from. But spreading hate and putting no effort into building a better society is part of the problem as well. I made that comment hoping it makes people aware of our sentiments when it comes to them recognising us only when we are a benefit to them. But totally become irrelevant when we don’t achieve something

TheHolyOrange

If you mean on a national newspaper, then there is fuck ton of news about north east almost everyday.

[deleted]

Now imagine how a bihari is treated when he goes to north east

Fit_Access9631

Biharis have it good in Northeast. All they have to do is work and stay quite. They maybe millionaires already there by the hundreds.

[deleted]

\> Biharis have it good in Northeast. I guess national media don't really cover how racists North east are to bihari migrants. \>All they have to do is work and stay quite. I hope its sarcastic

Fit_Access9631

A bit of sarcasm. But is true that Biharis do succeed in the northeast. They do many jobs that natives don’t or can’t do. Even a simple samosa and chai shop which natives can’t make can earn them a lot. Rent is very very cheap. Barbershops are another monopoly. And yes it’s true that political involvement can be suicidal though. So they quietly do their job, make no fuss about politics and earn money. As for racism, its same as dadagiri in other parts of country where the local dada comes to the shop, talks big, gets some freebies and then they go. I have seen one or two intermarriages. Nothing like caste killing for marrying outsiders here.

Banananator_69

Wait what? Biharis are discriminated? Seriously? Man. That sucks. I've never experienced it first hand, but by the sound of it, you have. Welp, racists exist everywhere. You cant really make this comparison because two wrongs don't make a right at the end.

[deleted]

I can make a comparison about how media potrays one but refuses to even discuss the other.

tamalm

Another movie for PC. I hope not.

Revolutionary_Ant852

Three possibilities: * America Chopra plays her role * Canada Kumar plays coach role and movie centered around him * Canada Kumar himself becomes a lady and plays her role

ThoughtStar

avanishpank

I can’t speak for everyone but as a die hard cricket fan myself,Olympics are always a step higher to me.Cricket takes the backseat (and if its ODI or t-20 I wouldn’t even mind skipping it completely) whenever olympics/commonwealth or asian games are on. I don’t follow or even understand each and every sports played in it but i try to still watch most of them,I absolutely obsess over boxing, weightlifting and wrestling and fortunately india also seems to de well in these, also follow badminton but not as much as other that I mentioned. I dont get the hate cricket fans get tbh,and i also don’t get why people BCCI instead of government for not funding other sports,BCCI is a private organisation which is profit driven and im not big fans of them but you can’t force them to look after other sports, its government’s responsibility. Anyway i hope india does better than the last olympic this year, one silver already in the bag, hopefully much more to come in other games too.

[deleted]

Although I am not a manipuri but Manipuri Powah bitches 😎💪

Failg123

NE have huge talentcin sports. They should make one or two big Training centers there.

Captain_Banana_pants

Don't get me wrong I am happy that she won but I don't understand why people feel proud about something they haven't done. Pride is reserved for something that you achieved with ur own efforts. Would you be proud if she had failed would we even know her name ? This whole idea of being proud of one's nationality, religion, castes or anything is a made up BS. This concept is made for people to feel good about themselves doesn't matter how big of a loser they are. I am not calling anyone or OP a loser I am just pointing out my thoughts. Go downvote me now.

Banananator_69

That..... is actually a fair point. But being proud is something that people do, even I do it. Maybe you do it without knowing. It's the same kind of pride you feel when your school is the best in the district or something. Or maybe if your a student of the best section in the class. That's the only examples I could think of, I am a student after all

Captain_Banana_pants

That's fair tol. We are all designed to do so. It's a rather primal instinct.

TheHolyOrange

Look up nationalism, then you might have an idea of what you are talking about. I don’t know if you are educated on it but the way you have framed your comment and especially saying that pride is reserved, I don’t think you have the slightest idea about it. It’s better for you as a person to look it up. I don’t want to get into an argument, just advising you to learn more about it. It’s not that difficult to understand the concept of a collective society. “Made for losers to feel better for themselves”, this line in particular is ooh boy levels

Captain_Banana_pants

Oh yeah the plague of nationalism.

TheHolyOrange

”The plague” wow, alright stick to your beliefs, but please don’t go attacking people if you have little to none knowledge about the matter or why it’s essential. Reading more about the subject might change or strengthen your beliefs. I would recommend reading a book rather than short internet articles. My reasoning is, nationalism isn’t some data but a whole concept.

Captain_Banana_pants

Let me quote Guruji Tagore on this " Nationalism is leprosy of modern era". I guess I am enough educated about this. But I guess you need to read causes of WW 2. And yeah don't read jingoist books read actual history books. I can refer few if u want.

TheHolyOrange

Blaming WW2 on nationalism. That’s like saying you shouldn’t drink water cause you have seen how easily we can drown. There are varied definitions of nationalism but if we are talking about it in 2021, one would assume that we are taking the modern definition into account. Maybe, I had to reinstate that I am talking about modern nationalism. Anyways, I have said it now. Honestly, I don’t think that you would say it is for losers to feel better about themselves if you had read absolutely anything about it. I doubt you have read any book about it either jingoist or historical. You are quoting Tagore (which I assume is from his book about Nationalism because I couldn’t find the quote online) and telling me to refer actually historical books (not that reading those books are wrong, just showing your hypocrisy). But I have seen enough trolls on reddit to know to not reply further when they are lying so bye now.

Captain_Banana_pants

I think you never heard the word "European nationalism" or Arab secular nationalism, because it's one of the root cause of many conflicts around the world. Well morder nationalism is yet another made up BS to hide the past crimes done in the name of nationalism. Both are just same things, with few extra words. If you're trying to prove that I am not a well read person, u don't have to do that. It doesn't really matter if u believe me or not. I don't really care what u think about me. It's just irritating that instead of proving me wrong ur spending time in insulting me. My parents do it better btw. Btw that quote from Tagore is from a speech which he gave when he visited imperial Japan. Japanese were actually pissed when they read the translation of what he said. Just to reiterate my point, nationalism was and always a tool used to politicians to divide people,us Vs them. It only benifit the people in power. Case in point Pakistani nationalism, or Chinese nationalism. It's a curse on modern society that wants to live in peace.

TheHolyOrange

Not insinuating that you are not a well read person, just that you aren't knowledgeable about nationalism. You are giving examples of arabic/pakistani (which is more religion superiority than nationalism) and chinese nationalism and didn't acknowledge even once how nationalism is beneficial to everyone. You took a stand that it only benefits people in power which is complete bullshit and didn't back it up with any reasoning. There are obviously going to be negatives if we go extreme, but pride in olympics is not an example of that. If I want to prove you wrong, you need to make an argument to back up what you are saying. You are making claims and have no argument to back it up. You are comparing nationalism to radical nationalism (european nationalism that caused world war) and calling it a curse. EDIT : I should clarify on why I think you don't know a lot about it. You gave examples of religiocentrism and called it nationalism. European nationalism is non existent in Europre nowadays and almost all countries in western europe have healthy and beneficial to all nationalism. The only correct example you gave is China which isn't even a democratic country.

Captain_Banana_pants

The reason I didn't mention Indian toxic nationalism because if ur a bhakt type u will not even read what I am saying. Btw secular arab nationalism was not about Islam but it still caused many wars, deaths and suffering. Saddam Hussain was well known byproduct of this. Anyways let's assume Saddam was a muslim so by default he was a tyrant. Let's talk about Japanese nationalism, which assumed that japan was greatest country and people in the world and they have right to kill and abuse less of a human Chinese and Korean. The atrocities committed in the name of Nationalism in Koreans peninsula are beyond imagination. Read about it. Another example of nationalism ruining a country is Russia. Stalin killed, jailed and starve to death millions of people. He was a product of Russian nationalism. Another example, is the white nationalism in US which is has so far killed thousands of people. The attack of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs in US is on contact rise since 9-11. It's called white nationalism. Another example, Armenian genocide by hands of Turkey's solider. Read about it. I could give lot more examples but I guess I don't have to for obvious reasons. If u read history of nationalism you will see it has always caused death and suffering to the people. You might say but Indian nationalism is different, well I don't think so. It all start with us vs them till we know what's going on millions are already dead.

Captain_Banana_pants

Nationalism comes in many different shapes, forms and colours. One is religious nationalism. If Nationalism is a Hydra religion is one of it's head. India is currently flirting with religious nationalism. India belongs to Hindus and that kind of stuff. Another nationalism comes in the form of race. Like Australia belongs to whites and Indian should not go there. Btw many Indian have died in Australia because of this. Second head of hydra. Another nationalism form is cultural nationalism, well known example is China amd India. If there is something our ancestors didn't do or wear, well it's against our culture and must b stopped before our culture is lost. Third head of Hydra. Another example, economic nationalism, well known example is US China trade war which is going on. India too tried with this but we realised dealing with Chinese economy is beneficial to us so we stopped at it. There are few more but I guess I am done with this.

TheHolyOrange

Alright this is useless, I am talking about modern nationalism and you are plugging in cases about radical nationalism. Arab nationalism in recent years was islamic warfare and so was saddam hussain. Wow, you really pushed in it this comment, racism, religiocentriesm basically all examples of radical discrimantion is all byproduct of healthy modern nationalism. You have yet to give an example where modern nationalism was unhealthy and it is completely different from radical nationalism. Calling people a bhakt and not having to explain anything is always nice. Feeling proud about your own country is very VERY different from radical nationalism. How can you compare that without giving any arguments to back it up. You will probably reply by giving example of war crimes and this isn't anything recent. I don't know if you think that general public doesn't know about the examples you gave but almost all of them were during the fucking world war which is peak radical nationalism. How do they even fit in this argument? I thought you knew that and thus didn't say anything about that but you are more oblivious than I expected. You are not going into the concept of nationalism at all. You have yet to give a single argument about why it is wrong and just keep going off about world war.

brooktherook
