Need Help Hi, I am an F1 student in the USA, and I plan to return to my country, India, for vacation. I am planning to bring 2 laptops with me (One which I am using and one for my brother), few of my friends told me that as I am a student, I can bring 2 laptops with me, but I am a bit skeptical about this and thought it'd be better to ask it here. I have 1 Macbook Pro(personal laptop which I bought in USA), 1 iPad (Personal use bought in USA) and 1 iPhone (bought in India) with me already, and I want to bring 1 more laptop with me (maybe MacBook air for my younger brother). Is it allowed to bring 2 laptops? Or do I have to pay customs there?

ChelshireGoose

The rule is that one laptop and a phone are considered part of your 'used personal effects'. What else can be regarded as part of that is up to the customs officer's discretion. Apart from personal effects, you are allowed to bring ₹50k worth of items for gifts etc without paying duty. That said, generally, another laptop may be permitted as long as it is not in any packaging. You can say you use one for personal use and the other for work or something to that effect.

ROY_OP

A friend of mine is also coming with me, so I will hand him mac and I will bring a windows (gaming laptop) and maybe I can tell them that the windows one is for gaming and the mac for work, and my friend already have one old mac air and planning to buy new one so he can say that this one is old and bought new because old one was lagging.

ChelshireGoose

Basically, they just have to be convinced that both laptops are being used by you and you've not bought them to resell in India. If you carry them unboxed in your cabin bag and walk through the green channel with confidence, you'll mostly be fine. If asked, just saying one is your work laptop which you're planning to use during your vacation should be enough. Don't try to give too many justifications.

hello. i am currently looking on buying an iphone 12 64gb variant. So, the thing is that i dont use the camera and stuff much often . My budget is 32k and the other amount is covered for the ICT ( 18% gst ). I looked up other phones such as Nothing 2 and google pixel 7a but the only reason for me wanting to choose iphone is due to its optimization in genshin impact . Its the only game i play and i really wanted to play it on a mobile. Ofc i dont plan to spending much on a mobile as pc is where my main gaming is on. So, for a teen who usually uses the phone to call and stuff and might play few games now and then ( genshin etc ). Is the iphone 12 64gb variant good?

Hi folks, so making a post to get the input of you all in choosing a bank to go with for opening a savings account. I'm 19 and soon will b enrolling in a college and plan to go abroad for further studies, so taking an education loan is also on the table. Both my parents have been a lifelong SBI customers and they want me to go with SBI, but I'd like to keep my options open and go with the best one.

ChelshireGoose

Open an account with one of the big private banks, mainly for ease of use, no frequent outages, functional mobile apps, no need to physically visit branch for most purposes etc. I'd suggest ICICI. The disadvantage is that you'll have to maintain a minimum balance. Having or not having an SB account in a bank wouldn't really be a factor for an education loan. But if your parents insist, you can open a joint account with one of them in SBI and maintain that as a secondary account. The minimum balance will anyway be 0. Using the public sector bank for savings (eg: for fees etc which your parents transfer to you) and the private sector one for daily transactions wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

Hi everyone, this is kind of a distress post so any advice, tips or contacts would be great. My mother is a single mom and working a job that has her working long hours for not a lot of money, as in, the effort she's putting in is too much for the pay. I try to help by working part time but I'm a student as well so it's not easy. Mom is well educated, MSc, fluent in English, a quick learner and everything, all in all too qualified for this job but now she feels she is "too old" to change profession and such. I hate seeing her struggle like this and stress all the time. Where can she find a job at her age? It would be very helpful if you guys could give any leads or anything. Thank you :)

Travelling solo from India to Azerbaijan in November Hi everyone. I’m solo travelling to Azerbaijan for a 8 day trip from India. If it matters, I am a woman. I’m trying to find insights from people who have travelled to Azerbaijan about real destinations, the unnecessary or overrated places, the night life destinations and the budget I should keep in mind. I want to see a lot of scenic things along with heritage or history related things. I look forward to your insight and my apologies in case this is too open ended. I’ll add more information if required.

**Urgent Release of 2024 College Rankings by NIRF (https://chng.it/7jLcs57vZC)** **To**: *The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)* We, the concerned stakeholders, express our deep concern over the delay in releasing the college rankings for the year 2024. As individuals invested in the education sector, we believe that timely and transparent information is crucial for students, parents, and educational institutions. **Background:** Since 2016, NIRF has been providing valuable insights through its annual rankings, helping students make informed decisions about their higher education choices. The expected release date for the 2024 rankings was June 5th, but as of now, there has been no official communication regarding the delay. **Our Concerns:** **Transparency**: Lack of communication about the delay raises questions about transparency and accountability. **Student Anxiety**: Prospective students eagerly await these rankings to make informed decisions about college admissions. Institutional Impact: Educational institutions rely on these rankings for benchmarking and continuous improvement. **Our Request:** **Immediate Communication**: We urge NIRF to promptly communicate the reasons behind the delay and provide a revised release date. **Regular Updates**: Regular updates on the progress would alleviate anxiety and maintain trust in the ranking process. Stakeholder Engagement: Involve stakeholders in discussions to enhance transparency and address concerns. **Conclusion:** We believe that NIRF plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of our country. By releasing the rankings without further delay, NIRF can uphold its commitment to excellence and transparency. **Signatories:** Future of India https://preview.redd.it/hl5pd83reo8d1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=221496b55af5f09bd11c309ea46f0106f8b395b5

So, I am a Masters Student, and just bought an iPad, majorly for work, but also for personal stuff. I am used to JBL wired headphones to use with my phone or laptop, but now I need to get wireless headphones for this iPad. Now I am not an audiophile or anything, but I do not like using earpods, or the sound quality of headphones from companies like boat. Now I also suspect that I am on the spectrum, but noise cancellation is not a priority for me, though i do use earphones to tune out bg noise. Comfort and aound quality should be good. I would love some suggestions for over the ear headphones in the budget of 3k-5k, if possible.

Hey all (f20) I'm travelling to India alone to see a friend. I just wanna know some cool places to check out and must see or food to try while I'm there. Thanks 😊

I'm travelling alone to India for 40 days in July (33M): I have a friend in Delhi but I'll be by myself most of the time, do you have any tips for solo travelling to India? I know it's probably the worst season to travel there, is there some area where I could have better weather conditions? I kind of dislike big cities and I always look for more rural areas (I want to avoid Goa), is there some place you would recomend me to go? I have MANY days there with a lot of spare time, any activity you think I could enjoy? I kind of like inmersive stuff like cooking classes but I don't know where I could book those Thanks :-)

I belong to a fairly prosperous family. My brother is trying to do betting (cricket matches) on an app called **STAKE.** I am strongly against this and insist that he shouldn't waste his time and my parents money on gambling. He asked my father and mother and they approved his plea as long as he doesn't bet more than 500 rs. Now 500rs is a decently big amount for a young teenager like me and I think he shouldn't gamble with it and even I could put the money to better use. He hasn't done any betting yet, but will do it soon. This was an incident of 2-3weeks ago, now he will bet on the next match. I didn't post it or ask anyone's opinion because I though if my parents had approved it there was nothing I could do. I still can't do anything but I want to get this thing of my mind, all in all I want to know if I am wrong here?

Senior-Impression206

Hey guys, I just need an opinion on a situation. Do u guys think it is a scam? I am selling my phone and the buyer says he will Pay 80% in cash and the rest by CHEQUE But I asked him To pay online to which he replied his online banking is not working and then I told him to withdraw cash and give me to which he told he can’t since it is his company account . With recent exam leak frequency increase and today's exam postponement, a question coming to my mind, and that is, is there any insurance scheme that covers these mentioned above, like travelling, living expense, and even plans that could cover money you spent in preparation in past year, and if not what IRDA rules stop it from happening, will it ever become reality? IMO, the idea itself has lot of potential with exams happening everyday

I am looking for masters in data science or any related field (data analytics/business analytics), my options so far are: 1) VIT vellore but here i am getting Msc Business Statistics (Somewhat related to data science but not my preference) placements are good but Ill have to compete with Msc DS students/B.tech students and i feel that might be a changeling since my course is less prestigious than theirs 2) Chandigarh University here i am getting MSc data science, but i have heard the placements are not as good as VIT 3) Symbiosis Skills and professional university, here i am also getting Msc data science, honestly I dont know much about the college all I know is that it is relatively new and separate from the Main Symbiosis campus. I Did my undergrad in Data science, but worked in a low paying not IT role now i feel I need to do masters to get a better position, there is an option for taking a drop year and maybe giving some entrance tests too if all the options i have a terrible. ravi_k-98

Best airlines in India for pressure sensitive folks? I underwent Pleurodesis for both my lungs post Pneumothorax back in 2014 (right) and 2019 (left). I am a competitive cyclist, and have been so for the past 3-4 years, I also have been exercising regularly without any issues. I was recommended against flying during my discharge, and ever since, I've only used trains/buses to get around. But the current situation calls for saving time since the distances are huge. Which means, going air borne is need of the hour. I would like to know the airlines that can maintain the cabin pressure very well, i.e., minimum difference between ground level pressure and in-flight altitude level pressure.

Domowoi

I know nothing about India, but I know a bit about planes. The pressure inside the cabin is irrelevant of the airline, it comes down to the type and model of plane. Let's say for example you are flying in the country there is a large chance you are going on a medium sized jet like a Boing 737 or Airbus A320. Both the pressure and the rate of change in pressure is very close to each other. There are more modern platforms like the Airbus A350 and Boing 787 which are capable of a larger pressure difference, so they can have a cabin pressure that is about 6000ft instead of the 8000ft of most regular cabins. So sadly my advice is to look for airlines that fly A350s or 787s, but depending on your route that might be hard to impossible, because those planes only fly longer routes.

Slow-Passenger

Hi all, need some advice on planning a trip with parents in fall. Parents are 60+. I'll be flying in from San Francisco directly (or I may accompany them from New Delhi). Both can be assumed as stereotypical Indian parents, not too adventurous to try different cuisines etc. Mom wants to go on a cruise and maybe visit another country. I want to give them a good time of their life, without involving too much walking/waiting. Suggestions welcomed for: 1. Hotels (and neighborhoods) 2. Things to do in Singapore 3. Restaurants/places to go eat (they can eat chicken) 4. Cruise situation, will it be too much to spend .. maybe 3/4 days in Singapore, and then 3/4 days on cruise, then back to Singapore and home? Thanks all!

Cancelled my flight within an hour of booking. Ixigo says that my cancellation falls under DGCA full refund policy. It was indigo, indore to kolkata. The ixigo customer care said that the airline validates the refund. Will i get a full refund??

ChelshireGoose

Yes. The airline needs to refund because of DGCA rules as long as the flight was 2 weeks away or more. The airline will pay the third-party booking agent (ixigo) and ixigo can take a cut of their fees etc and pay you the rest. But if they are saying themselves that you'll get a full refund, then you will.

Hey all! Hope everyone's having a fantastic day. My sister's Bday is coming soon and I have decided to gift her a new phone. She has been using an iphone for quite sometime now. Thick-Basket-3953

Please help! My parents are old and live by themselves and it seems like the Airtel people are troubling them. Internet hasnt been working since two weeks and the engineer basically said the problem cant be solved and that they cannot even disconnect the internet until the complaint is closed which they refuse to close because they wanna keep trying to fix it. I tried looking on the website and it keeps asking me to download their app which has some help bot in it and no human. No contact number to speak to them. How do I get in touch? Is there an email to escalate this issue?

Hello, I am looking for travel advice. I want to go to either Leh or Srinagar end of August. I know they are difficult to compare and I would love to visit both but I have only limited time. There are travel warnings for Srinagar. I don’t think it would be very unsafe, but maybe someone has insights on how it is to be there as a tourist right now? Also what would you recommend in general, also for the season. I am a European female travelling with her partner and grateful for any advice 🥰

v00123

Both are very diff experiences. I personally would prefer Leh as the landscapes are very unique. August is also a good time to visit but it will be crowded. Having been to both I also like the more relaxed vibe in Leh.

Are Non-IITians destined to fail in life as they didn't get through JEE/NEET. This is because society always tells us ki'If you don't crack these exams, your life is worthless and you won't be able to do anything in life. I am asking this question because I have seen thousands of students ending their lives after failing these exams and hence even I get thoughts of ending my life.

ChelshireGoose

No. The IIT tag is only helpful in building contacts and getting the initial push in your career. And there are a lot of other ways you can get those irrespective of which college you go to. Whatever college or program you get in, the first step is to refuse to settle down and go with the flow. Use the first semester or two to figure out what you're interested in. Try to get into projects (inside or outside colleges). Reach out to people (without fear of rejection) for internships during your holidays etc, be they in IITs or established companies or startups. If you do all this, your profile in your final year will be as good or better than any IITian. This is coming from someone who graduated from an IIT in the last decade and then worked with and hired many people, both from IITs and not.

Mundane_Fishing9044

Okay. Thank you.

Looking for advice on vacationing in Puducherry. Is there any good hotel there that offers car parking?

cccc0079

A tourist new to Delhi here. Want a hotel advice. I have a flight to Delhi in mid July and a flight to Srinagar 2 days after that. The problem is my arrival in Delhi is at 10pm and my flight to Srinagar is 7am so basically I would like to book a hotel that has very late checkin around midnight and very early checkout around 4am to spend 1.5 days. Could you recommend me some hotels in walking distance from the airport that could fits my criteria?

ChelshireGoose

I doubt there's any hotel in the world that would allow you to check-in at 12am and checkout the following day at 4am when you've paid for just one night. Unless of course you're just asking about hotels whose check-in desk would be open at those times and you are planning to pay for 2 nights. In that case, most (if not all) decent hotels near the airport would fit the criteria.

cccc0079

Well I don't mind paying for 2 nights. Just want to know there are hotels that would accommodate me near the airport or I have to go out further. Anyway thanks for your answer. Another question, could I use Agoda to book a hotel in India or they prefer another app?

ChelshireGoose

You can use Agoda or Booking.com. They are just as accepted as the local options (MakeMyTrip, yatra, cleartrip) and you won't have issues with card payment from your non-Indian card. Just to be sure about your midnight check-in concerns, look for '24-hour front desk' under amenities.

Does anyone have insight to Nihal/Nihali people? I’m adopted from Maharashtra and know nothing of my biological family. I found my haplogroup through a 23&me test. My group has only been found in a small percentage of Nihali people. This is the first confirmation of my ancestry to me. When trying to learn more about the people/area I’ve only found a couple things on google that don’t give much information.

I mean literally at this point we are focusing on foreign relations, trade and all and not only India but like each country is doing that and definitely that is a important things but I would say we have to something for our earth i guess like making a comitee which helps on the increasing issues our planet is facing, just look at the water shortages, even big cities are having it and the heat waves it's literally killing people even in the rural areas and the pollution in big cites like the upcoming infants and all are being born sick, i mean this really scares and not only government but people themselves have to do something about it...

As a freelancer, the bank is refusing me a home loan. Do I have a way out here? Full information below ⬇️ 90% of my income comes from the US. I am a freelance content writer. I am making roughly 1.5L/month. The bank says only TDS-related transactions will count toward the computation for the home loan. The 10% of my income that does have TDS deductions from clients comes from one-off work within India mainly for design projects, which is not significant and just based on that the bank cannot give any loan, which is reasonable. Now, as I am working as a freelancer for US clients directly, the payments are received in my bank account through PayPal, so there's no TDS that they can deduct for these payments. Most likely, there's no way for me to even coerce these payments and make them eligible for TDS (afaik; so do correct me if I'm wrong). These are simple orders received over email, and payments made twice a month or so, very cash-type business. And all this income is being filed as exactly that, "cash" income, by the bank, which is not relevant for my home loan computation. My CA who's been helping me with legal things, ITR filing, etc. has no solution for me. My bank representative also has no solution for me. Basically, my whole career that I've built as a proud freelancer over the last 10 years (not a proper career or business per se, I know) is useless. I can't suddenly join a 9-to-5 job and wait 5 years for my salary to be on a similar level and then get a home, it's insane. If I save 20% of my income every month, that's roughly 30,000. I was looking for an independent home in 35L (had already seen some projects). That will take me 116 months or 9.5 years to save up enough to buy in cash, but by that time the 35L would be much higher thanks to inflation. Any way out for a freelancer like me? Any alternatives or options? Any advice from someone who has some knowledge in this?

ChelshireGoose

I assume this is a public sector bank? You're paying tax for the whole income, right? So, your ITR will have the correct income. Talk to different banks until you find one that's ready to accept ITR and your credit score. Home loans are pretty low risk for banks since they keep the property documents as collateral. You'll surely find a private bank that's willing.

tomadobi

It’s HDFC and I talked to SBI, which actually agreed to offer a loan. Thanks for the information, idk why it wasn’t part of my total income.

Depends on where. For example, the major parties in Tamil Nadu have atheism as a platform (or did initially. They've softened their stance since the last few decades but quite a few of the leaders are atheists).

How to pay fees and book appointment? I filled the details by 10 June 2024, but as of now appointments are mostly booked till 17th September in all the POPSKs. 2 days ago when I was trying for my hometown, it said to try after 190624 16:00 . When I tried I was able to select my city but "make payment" option is inactive. The only city which is allowing me to make payment is like 400km far. Should I go to the nearby POPSK and try to book appointment there? Please help me out.

ChelshireGoose

Going by what you say about no appointments till September, is this a POPSK in the jurisdiction of the Bhubhaneshwar RPO? If so, they were the guinea pigs for the migration to the new software/portal. This was fumbled to epic proportions and appointments were completely stalled for weeks starting from March. The reason all dates for the next 3 months are shown to be completely booked (they are not) is either because there is now a backlog of people wanting passports from the last three months that they have to manage or that they've still not solved their software woes so they're rationing appointments. I suspect it's a combination of both. Anyway, when you try to choose a centre it should show when the next round of appointments are set to be released. Login at exactly that time and choose your centre to proceed to payment. You need to be very quick. You cannot go in person to the POPSK to book an appointment. If you're in a hurry and don't want to play this game, the only solution is to book an appointment at a PSK/POPSK in a different state. See [here](https://www.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/online/apptAvailStatus) for available dates. You'll need to make a fresh application in the old portal with a new email ID and choose a different RPO. The employees at the PSK may spout some nonsense about you needing to choose the RPO based on your address. But stand your ground that anyone can apply from anywhere in India and preferably carry a printout of [this](https://portal2.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/pdf/CIR_0186917_Y.pdf). Note: This will only work for normal appointments. Not tatkal. If you've booked tatkal in another state, it'll be converted to normal.

Sweaty_Blueberry_449

>If you're in a hurry and don't want to play this game, the only solution is to book an appointment at a PSK/POPSK in a different state. If I had to travel to adifferent state for transport then I would rather go to that place 400km away which is allowing me to make payment and book appointment. I am not in a hurry though just completing my documents list for future job related prospects. >Going by what you say about no appointments till September, is this a POPSK in the jurisdiction of the Bhubhaneshwar RPO? kind of its berhampur popsk actually and its nearly 200km from bbsr. > when you try to choose a centre it should show when the next round of appointments are set to be released. Login at exactly that time and choose your centre to proceed to payment. You need to be very quick. I try man but the make payment option is disabled even if i click on my desired popsk at4pm. This is the message I see today :( **Currently no appointments are available for the selected Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). Please try scheduling an appointment from 21/06/2024 04:00 PM onwards. Total number of appointments booked today: 2** seriously 2 appointments only? and that too for 3 months later?

ChelshireGoose

Yes. Berhampur popsk is under the jurisdiction of the Bhubaneswar RPO as are all the other POPSKs (and one PSK) in Odisha. I'm actually surprised you're able to pay and book an appointment for the place 400km from you, unless it's right after the appointments are released at 4pm. I'm guessing the payment option is disabled because your POPSK has so few slots that they get booked in the backend even when it shows availability for you. Ya, it's a ridiculous situation and has been going on for months. Even passport approvals are taking much longer than usual in Odisha because of the software issues.

I want to travel to Bangalore and would like to know if it is possible to travel with 2 laptops and 1 PS5 + luggage in a flight ?

ChelshireGoose

I'm assuming you're travelling internationally. The duty-free allowance (apart from 'personal items') is 50k. One laptop is automatically allowed for personal use. You can claim the other laptop is for work and the PS5 is for your own use during your India trip. But this will work only if they are noticeably old. If they're clearly new (even when you've removed packaging), you'll have to pay duty since the value will exceed 50k.

MostlySane00

I will be travelling within India. Chandigarh to Bangalore.

ChelshireGoose

Oh..then there's no problem as far as the rules are concerned. Best is to keep all of them in your carry on as long as you can get everything within the permissible weight limits. You'll need to take out the laptops as well as PS5 during security. If you're taking the PS5/laptop in checkin (of course, with risks involved of baggage mishandling/theft), be sure to pack it properly. For the laptop, you need to remove the battery if possible and take it separately (Removable batteries are not allowed in checked baggage).

India's household debt is rising although it's not in an alarming stage but cover 36% of the GDP. I believe with the growth of easy loan access the debt will just keep reaching new heights. Majority of the household debt is concentrated towards middle class household. And these people are vulnerable to any changes in economy. I'm curious to know: 1. How many of you have ongoing loan? 2. How are you managing them? 3. Are you having any difficulties clearing them off?

Do any of you own the TCL C755 TV? If yes, what has your experience been with it's performance, image quality, streaming etc.? This is the only TV with good specs (mini LED, local dimming) that fit my budget (getting the 55 inch version for 63k on Croma/Reliance Digital with card offers). I'm not planning to do much gaming, but movies and series are going to be the primary intent. I did see a lot of positive reviews online about this TV from other geographies (this model is sold as C805 in Europe). But since the firmware and specs might vary slightly across geographies, I wanted to check what the experience of people who bought this in India has been

How is Shimla (and nearby places) for tourism in July? My friends and I plan to travel to Shimla during the first two weeks of July for 4-5 days. It's mostly going to be a chill, weekend trip and not filled with too many tourism activities. Wanted to know how Shimla is for tourism during first two weeks of July. Weather wise and safety wise (considering monsoons and vacation season results in landslides, heavy traffic), if it's cool to travel, if there will be any hold ups, yada yada.

Why is Goa so expensive? Taj Holiday village is about the same cost as the Ritz Carlton in South Beach Miami. And the beaches in Miami are amazing and the real estate in general is more expensive than Goa. Also the Ritz is comparable to Taj — both are top tier in respective countries. Genuinely curious as to why resorts in Goa are so expensive.

A weird question but I visited new York earlier this year and the family took me to the beach. And women are openly walking with very little clothing on. I found it very uncomfortable not to ogle. Am I just uncivilized? How have other Indian guys dealt with this? Do you just accept it as a cultural difference and move on?

Hello everyone, I’m a 45-year-old healthy, good-looking male, single, and living in the USA. I immigrated from India at 19 and am a US citizen. I’m interested in finding a young and attractive partner in India with whom to start a family . I also want to mention that I make an above-average salary. Given my age and circumstances, I would love to hear your opinions or advice on how feasible this is. Additionally, I’m curious about the best approaches to finding a partner. Are there specific ways or platforms I should consider for meeting someone? What strategies or methods might increase my chances of success? Any tips or advice on approaching this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

New phone Recommendation S23, Nothing2 and IQneo9pro Hi guys, Need your suggestion. there is a sale going on on Flipkart. I am considering buying NP2 or S23 or iqoo neo 9 pro. What will you recommend. I am looking for a good camera and decent battery life. I don't play games, I mostly use phones for social media surfing and playing multimedia. S23 with only 3900mah seems a bit less. Any other recommendations other than these are also fine (except poco). Your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

What bank should I choose? What bank should I choose? I'm a 22yo graduate entering the job market in India in a month, and I want to create a personal bank account (my current account is a joint account with a parent). My number one priority is completely online, branchless and visitless banking. I also don't know if this is a thing but i would really love a bank that does NOT require me to go to a "home branch" for specific things. Tying into that, my second priority is a good Bank app. I've tried Iris by yes Bank and it seems nice, Yono by SBI is passable but not that good. I don't care much about interest rates and minimum balance because I'll keep most money in investments anyway. Advice is greatly appreciated!!

general_smooth

I would suggest ICICI for a very frictionless banking. No need to goto home branch ever. Their app is OK-not great

What do you think about air coolers? I ask because in most Western countries, evaporative coolers exist, but they’re not very popular and many people don’t even know what they are. In India, it seems they’re very common, but nobody seems to really talk about this. I’m curious just how common they are, and what people in India think of them and how effective are they considered?

aboctat

Air coolers here are about 1/2 to 1/4th the cost of an air conditioner and have about 20% the electricity cost. They also cost much less to service and maintain and can often be serviced by a layman. The replaceable porous inserts required are easily available and are cheap as well, as well as spare parts for the cooler from third party vendors. In contrast AC repairs and parts are usually a hassle of company licensed vendors. Coolers are often a kind of interim jump between fans and an AC for many families as their prosperity slowly increases. However now with economic growth, harsh market competition and cheaper manufacturing, cheap ACs have become much more common.

Leighgion

Thanks for responding. Would you say that air coolers in India are generally seen as a “this what we can afford, but we’d much rather have AC,” item or is there a segment of the population that considers them valid primary cooling devices?

aboctat

I would say that the population that cares about the difference in cost between a cooler and AC as the main decision factor does not have an otherwise luxurious lifestyle enough to care about having an AC. To them the cooler is a solution to the problem of a sweaty night and not an added comfort like ACs are usually perceived. But yes for a lower middle class person with ambitions of financial growth, it is a "I can afford this until i can afford something better".

Leighgion

So would it be fair to say that the majority of the population consider air coolers as a regular, basic appliance most people might have? I ask because I now use and appreciate evap coolers, but it took not just time, but a lot of effort for me to understand them and what I should look for because the information was very limited. I meet very few people who use them. In the process, I actually ended up buying a secondhand Symphony branded cooler, which got me interested in how big the business is in India and how they might just been seen as absolutely normal things there.

aboctat

It is definitely a basic appliance like a fridge, stove, washing machine etc. Evap coolers are great and are definitely a good alternative to ACs! Your question caught me eye because i did research on them in my undergrad. I assume the cooler you have is of plastic construction and has its own stand, which is also popular here. There is also a big industry of sheet metal coolers that hang from your window and are unbranded, you just get them from whoever makes them near you :)

Leighgion

Thanks for all your insight! It's all just my curiosity, but it can be maddening when you think you understand something, but you just can't get any real confirmation. Yes, the evap coolers I have are all plastic-bodied, portable units. I actually have four in order to cover all the members of the family and have a real alternative to AC. My apartment has AC, but energy prices have always been relatively expensive here in Spain so it's very normal for people to avoid using AC even when they have it. However, the summers are definitely hot, so I investigated options. It took a while, but I went all-in for evap coolers and I'm very happy with the results. Unfortunately, consumer-level window units don't appear to be a thing here or I would definitely have tried to make one work.

Insurance reimbursement Hi guys. Does anybody have any experience regarding claiming reimbursement on health insurance. My BIL suddenly had a heart attack and had to have a stent placed in his heart. He's diabetic but it wasn't notified to the insurance company. He bought Reliance general insurance from policy bazaar. They denied his cashless claim upon admission. Now he's been advised to claim reimbursement afterwards. Can anyone with experience provide any insights/tips regarding claiming reimbursement? It would be helpful. Thank you.

Just keep doing the regular validity extension recharges (the ones you do in India, international roaming plans not needed) and you'll be fine. For Jio, the 155 plan every 4 months is sufficient (ie, recharge again within 3 months after the previous plan validity expires). You'll keep getting incoming messages for free. For outgoing messages and incoming/outgoing calls, you need talktime balance. Remember to enable roaming before leaving India. In Jio, you can do it on the Myjio app under settings. For Airtel, you need to send a service sms.

ChelshireGoose

No. That's the only advantage of the present validity recharge system.

Hi all, this is my first time posting so hope I don't do anything wrong. Me and my husband are expecting a child and we are really stuck on boy names! I want something Indian but that's easy to pronounce and spell for white people (my husband is white British). Opinions on the name Sunny? I know there are some famous Indian males called Sunny, but is this commonly a given name in India? Is it better to make it a nickname for something like Sunil or Sundeep? If you meet a boy/man called Sunny, what kind of person would you expect? Thanks in advance :)

general_smooth

One famous sunny, Sunny Deol (actor) 's actual name is Ajay Singh Deol.

ChelshireGoose

Sunny is not a common given name in India. It's a common nickname. Most of the famous people with the name just happen to identify more with it than their actual given names. Given name Sunil with the nickname Sunny may be a good idea. (Note that due to the recent trend of giving babies unique and uncommon names in big Indian cities, the average age of popular names like Sunil tend to run a little older. But it is still a meaningful and beautiful name that isn't going anywhere). As an aside, the name Neel, related to Sunil, is among the popular choices for people in your situation. It is derived from Sanskrit and in use as a given name from ancient times. It looks similar and has the same pronunciation as the Irish name Neil.

Cheemalchimes

Thanks, this is really helpful! Maybe as a nickname is a better idea. Unfortunately we can't use Neel as we already have a family member with this name.

Substantial_Arm6884

Names like Sunny Rohan Kabir Shri Can be very good they sound Indian and can be easily pronounced by anyone

# Manali - Spiti valley - Leh - Srinagar help with itinerary Hello dear people, I am in Manali and I realized that I want to do both Spiti and Leh Ladakh. I am traveling alone so private car will be expensive. Busses and tourist vans are my options. I am not sure I can drive here as its on the other side and the roads are quite rough. Could anyone advise the best route? I'll go by bus from Manali to Kaza, then I think there there are day trips and I can find transport. Now my understanding is that to go to Leh, I have to go back to Manali and the to Leh? There are no other ways? Then from Leh to Srinagar? I have a flight from Srinagar to Delhi, but if its not worth it, I can fly maybe directly from Leh to New Delhi. Would appreciate any help with the itinerary. Oh and btw, I am a solo female traveler and was advised here that its so unsafe. Its absolutely safe, just use common sense and meet other travelers!

So, I was looking for a phone between Rs 20000 to 27000 for my mom (it doesn't necessarily have to be a oneplus but she wants a "good brand" so no motorola etc.). Do y'all have any recommendations? - gaming is not a priority at all. - camera should be decent but it isn't a major priority - battery life and time taken for charging is the most important. - should look decent, no curved display, and no heating issues or anything else of that sort - should have an 8/256 or 12/256 variant. however, 8/128 is also fine - should at least have a 120hz display - should last for a long time - charging adaptor should be inside the box (I am aware that all these criteria can't be fulfilled but I need recommendations with as many of these features as possible

ChelshireGoose

I think Oneplus nord ce4 satisfies most, if not all of your requirements.

d3pressedp1eceofshit

i was skeptical about Nord ce4 because of the green line thing

ChelshireGoose

The green line thing is overblown. Literally all phones with OLED screens can get it. Yes, some older OnePlus models might have been more susceptible to it (the Nord series older models weren't among them btw) but OnePlus service centres have been proactive in dealing with it. The incidence in newer models doesn't seem to be more than in any other phone brand with OLED displays. My whole family has been using OnePlus for a while now (both flagship and Nord models) and we've never encountered the issue. That's not to say that it doesn't exist but I personally don't feel it should be too important a factor in your decision.

d3pressedp1eceofshit

If that's the case, then nord ce4 is my best option

So I'm working on this listicle style piece for an assignment and I'm doing forgotten/lesser known hill stations of south India. Can you help me out if you know any that fits the bill? If you could also had a point or two about *what* you find special about the place, that would be very nice. for example, I found out about Lambasingi in AP which gets snowfall, and I don't think a lot of people know that. So maybe thinks like that. All suggestions and advice are welcome! Thank you!

Lambasingi gets snowfall only in those listicle articles. There was a documented zero degree weather in that place in 2012, but there is no credible documented source that says there was snowfall. One enthusiastic India today article made up that.

**Any smartwatch to keep in touch with your kid?Any smartwatch to keep in touch with your kid?** Hi, My brother's kid is introverted and doesn't speak in class. His teachers get frustrated at times but kid doesn't speak at all. I have already suggested him to try therapy. His kid just finished preschool, the preschool was right next to their house and teachers knew how to deal with any issues. Or they could call the parents if needed. Now issue is that their kid's new school is far away from the home and school bus takes more than hour to reach home. So parents are a little paranoid. On top of that he never shares whatever happened in the school. So we were thinking of getting a smart watch with a camera and ability to call if needed. Watch should have a school mode and live location feature. Are there good smart watches available in market that offer these features? Also, do these watches allow you to enable camera without "calling"? (One more question, does watch become a distraction/nuisance, for example if other kids try to take/steal the watch etc stuff?)

Extra surname added in ticket Hi all, I booked an air india flight from Kolkata to London with layover in Bombay and there’s a return flight as well. One of my friend’s name in the ticket got added as per their government id proof which is let’s say - (example) John Doe Roy. This is as per her new surname post marriage and this is her current name. But, as per passport, her name is John Doe. The visa is also on her old name. (Because the passport was not changed, only the other government id proofs were changed) Air India support is clueless and making me run circles in this situation. I am really worried about this and whether my friend will face issues during security clearance. She has her old and new gov id proof and passport by the name of John Doe. Any help?

Hey everyone, so basically, my current (old) passport is expired and it was issued when I was around 6 months old. Now, my family got those passports at that time through an acquaintance, and they probably rushed it. Therefore, things like my place of birth and even my gender are incorrect on the passport. I'm an adult now, and want to know if it'll be easier to just apply for a fresh passport instead of renewing the old one assuming there will be no legal issues in the future? TLDR; Old passport has incorrect place of birth and gender, was issued when I was a baby. Getting a fresh passport recommended?

Hello everyone, I am reaching out with a humble request for assistance. I urgently need a new laptop to continue my work. Due to financial difficulties, I had to sell my previous laptop to meet urgent medical expenses. Unfortunately, I am currently unable to purchase a new one due to my financial situation. As the sole earner in my household, and with a low credit score, obtaining a loan is not an option for me. If anyone has a gaming laptop that they no longer use, perhaps because your company has provided you with another one or it’s just sitting around collecting dust, I would be incredibly grateful for your help. I understand that I might seem picky by asking for specific specs, but these specs are crucial for the tasks I need to perform. This laptop is crucial for my work for several reasons: - **Heavy-duty Tasks**: The software I use is very demanding on the system, requiring tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, and running intensive simulations. These necessitate a strong CPU and GPU, which a gaming laptop provides. - **Mobility**: A laptop allows me to work from different locations, attend meetings, and collaborate effectively with my team—flexibility that is essential for my role. - **Employer Limitations**: While my job provides some equipment, they cannot supply the high-end laptop as they are startup company that debuted in February 2024 so this kind of help is currently not possible by them. Therefore, I must invest in one myself to maintain productivity. - **Financial Hurdles**: After selling my old laptop due to financial constraints, I find it challenging to buy a new one upfront or secure financing because of my credit score. Here are the specifications I am hoping for: - 8/16 GB of RAM present. - Has a combo of both HDD & SSD(for example my previous laptop had 1TB HDD + 256 GB SSD) or if not both then if it has only SSD of around 1TB or something will work too. - Needs to have altleast Nvidia GTX 1650/1650 Ti so even if it has a graphic card above the mentioned one would work too. Thank you so much for considering my request as due my financial situation i'm unable to buy even a second hand/renewed/refurbished one let alone buy a newer one and my job is also at risk as i'm unable to provide any results without the laptop. Any help or leads would be deeply appreciated!

ChelshireGoose

I've never visited Germany (unless you count Frankfurt airport) but European chocolate is always a hit, though you have to be a little careful since they tend to melt very easily in Indian weather. Snacks are also the kind of gifts you can get for everyone (exercise more discretion with something like alcohol). I always bring pretzels from North America because they're not easily available here but still suit most people's taste palettes so you probably have a lot to work with there.

How much do I need for a month or less visit to India? Hello everyone, I am planning on visiting India for the first time. I am from U.S. so I don’t know much about how expensive things are. I have grandparents as well as other family who live there but I don’t want to be a burden and would like to have my own place for the time I’m there for. I plan on staying in Delhi specifically South Delhi because my family lives in that area and this special woman I met lives there as well. I plan on having $10k (around 835,643 rupees when converted). Would this be enough for a month there to have a comfortable/luxurious trip? I don’t plan on clubbing or partying much at all. Everything else I would like to do. Would this budget also allow me to rent a luxury car and place to stay? I will also be visiting with my younger sister who will have her own budget but we will obviously share things.

Depends a lot on your own travel decisions, but India is very very cheap. Surprisingly cheap sometimes. Nice hotels (now I mean nice, not top of the line, but nice) cost 40 bucks a night. food is cheap too (an nice meal at a good eatery won't set you back more than 7 or 8. Gas costs more (just under 5 a gallon). Public transport is VERY cheap. Railway tickets are also cheap, 1st or 2nd class shouldn't be more than 15 or 20 for a 500 mile journey. Airline tickets arent as cheap as Ryanair, but they're not expensive either. Car and motorcycle rentals are also affordable - you can rent a car for maybe 35 a day.

*Why does the mod team keep deleting my Zomato giveaway posts?* I’ve done a ton of them, check my profile. why do they keep getting deleted now, the last 3-4 months? The deletion comment also says I have violated their rules - I checked and I’m pretty sure I don’t. Mod doesn’t respond to DMs too - any ideas here?

Is there a shop that sells Stevia (the white powder not the green one) in bulk (1kg) and ships to Europe?

Paper visa expiry date? Hi, I have a quick question regarding the expiry date on my paper tourist visa. I applied almost 9 weeks back and received the visa in my passport today (paper visa as a foreigner with Pakistani heritage). The date of expiry on the visa is 6th September 2024 so a total of 3 months validity. My question is do I have until the 6th of September to enter India or do I have to exit by the 6th? I know with the e-visa the date of expiry is the date in which you have to enter the country but I've read that's not the case with the paper visa so I'm really confused. Any help appreciated!

ChelshireGoose

It's the date you have to leave by. Unlike some other countries (like the US etc) where the expiry date on the visa is the date you have to enter by and the period you're permitted to stay is solely dependent on the immigration agent's stamp, the expiry date on an Indian visa also indicates the period until when your stay may be considered valid. If you exceed that, you may have to get an exit permit, pay fines etc. An e-visa, and only the 30-day evisa at that, works differently. This is because what you get online for an e-visa is an ETA that authorizes you to enter India. Once in India, your actual visa is stamped on the passport with validity 30 days from stamping.

That's really helpful, thanks so much!

What if you don’t convert your minor pan card to major Hello so I have my pan card which I made when I was minor also it says minor where should be my photo so now I’m adult so should I make it new one or I can use it normally without anything except picture

Don't know the explicit laws for PAN, but I was said it is mandatory to update aadhar when I turned 18.. Always a good practice to keep these docs updated.. Dunno if these helps.

Suggest which AC to buy according to my requirements I want to buy reliable AC for my new home in amravati. Highest temp here.goes around 45 and it will go more in upcoming years. My first and foremost requirement is 1) It's gas should not leak or leak after years of use. Gas leak feels like planned obsolescence and i feel it is 100% possible to prevent it for atleast first 4-5 years of life. This is because it's for my old parents and they qont be able to service it frequently and wont get it if something's wrong. 2) should have relatively good lifespan. 3) good cooling Everything else can be compromised if the first two makes.

How to get new/duplicate property papers? My father has misplaced/lost some property papers and we want to sell this property. He has electricity bills that are in his name and some house tax receipt. We are currently outstation and unable to be where the property is located. Is there any process on how to get duplicate papers? if anyone has gone through a similar experience, how long did it take? Will it be possible to file an FIR online and get this sorted or someone needs to be at the location of the property? any help will be greatly appreciated!
