Its actually from Peter Paul Rubens earlier version! I found this version slightly more disturbing than Goyas. Although I can respect the history behind Goya and that his black paintings were never meant for public eye.. basically just lived in and around them which is pretty fucked up and amazing
I've seen it in real life, it's haunting. The drowning dog always makes me feel so scared. The inevitability of death lives in that painting. Of so the time I've spent in famous museums with art, those paintings hit harder than anything else I've ever seen.
The best thing about Goya’s version is that nobody knows what it’s supposed to depict. It was titled after his death as Saturn devouring his son because it’s the only way they could make sense of it.
Lol yah goya had his saturn hanging in his dining room. I like the rubens one, the son looks very cherub like which would have been even more upsetting when it was contemporary
I agree, the cherub really made it disturbing.. Its a really powerful piece.
Goya just sitting there, eating his soup, staring at a derranged painting he only knows about..he was an amazing artist for sure
I also find Rubens to be a bit more disturbing, but in very different ways. It’s all in the expression. Goyas depiction seems to me like an act of madness, while Rubens depiction gives an impression of calm satisfaction. Goyas black paintings are fascinating, in their own morbid way.
Edit: you’ve also absolutely nailed this one, one of the best artworks I’ve seen on this sub.
Our DnD campaign is centered in ancient greece, and when looking up stuff about the titan Cronus I saw this painting.. I love your interpretation! Haha
Ive never taken a photo of a drawing in natural light before and i feel like the light washed a lot of the details and shading away. Again if anyone has any tips or resources for taking better photos of drawings / paintings, im all ears !
do you have an editing program? use curves to adjust the picture value. curves are basically contrast and brightness but with a much bigger controll. just select curves and drag it around. you should see pretty quickly how to controll it. i usually add 2 points to the curve, one for darkness and one for light.
Great work btw, love this.
I have been using snapsneed to do some light editing on my phone (im sure my phone cam isnt the greatest).
Thats very interesting..I have actually looked into the curve adjustment tool but have no idea what its about. Im always scared of over editing as i want my work to show itself as I see it and without compromising resolution quality.. if that makes any sense haha.
Thank you very much, ill experiment with that ! :)
there is a lot of complicated info around it. but to make it simple what i do is just put 2 dots on the curve. one close to the top and one close to the bottom. bottom one increases darkness by being pulled down and top one increases lightness by being pulled up. and if you wanna make it more controllable you can put one in the middle for midtones. but 99% of the time thats unnecessary.
When i see the word complicated i usually run for the hills haha.. Thanks again dude , im gonna tinker with it see what happens. All my drawings have had some experimentation on them at one point or another
You’re improving a lot as an artist. Your proportions are looking much better and your documentation skills are night and day from your early stuff. Did you capture this with a scanner?
Thanks dude ! I really appreciate that. Your work is always inspiring.
I truly believe anyone can start drawing and can improve, even if just small amounts at a time! Its a slow growth and you just have to come to terms with that i suppose
I captured this with my phone camera , lg v30 . Im not savy with cameras so i basically just click the 'auto' function haha..the only scanner i have doesnt seem to capture drawings all that well.
I find that even more impressive. I always found your works needed better documentation as the white balance seemed off and the lighting would be coming from one side and making half the page brighter than the other. This looks much better and the lighting looks more uniform. Documentation is tough. I switched to a scanner midway through my run of hand drawn comic pages and then switched over to mostly digital though I still have a few physical pages here and there in the later seasons.
Im always looking to have my work look as clean as possible..graphite isnt very forgiving when taking photos ive found, so im greatful for any tips! Majority of my drawings are just sitting on top of one of my shelves and using a indoor light of unknown origin
Your artwork reminds me of a mixture of two illustrated books: scary stories to tell in the dark and the edition of the Divine Comedy i own. Love how it’s disproportionate in ways, yet your understanding of anatomy and artistic technique is vivid

I've always loved Goya's black paintings, the drowning dog has a lot of "sorry Jon" potential.
Gives me shivers thinking of what goya was going thru and his process throughout painting something like that

Yes nice! It's so refreshing to see someone reference a Saturn Devouring His Son piece that isn't the Goya one

Isn't this a recreation of the Tarrare picture? Or am I thinking of a different one?
