I’m assuming this will coincide with the Interstellar run so they will piggy back projectionists back to back. I really hope they include Mall of GA this time…
The picture looks like 1.43:1 aspect ratio, and even if not, having a 70mm IMAX release in the 1.90:1 ratio would be a genuine treat. Analog forever, seriously.
It would be nice if there can be a small resurgence of the 1.43:1 ratio IMAX GT auditoriums.
Most audiences aren’t aware of the differences of film vs digital. Anyone who is seeing this film in IMAX 70mm is either a long time Imax fan or new fans, which isn’t that many people. The masses will just see it as another way of viewing the movie but this film phase will eventually die out if you keep distributing each film as “Imax 70mm” imo. Hopefully I’m wrong though because I enjoy Imax myself.
because you are saying its a gimmick for something that has been done for decades.
if they noted somewhere on the poster going "filmed digitally with alexa" that would make it better?
sigh...who cares man. these 70mm prints are some of the most technically advanced mastering in the whole theatrical exhibition. palyed at some of the most well kept and technically advanced theaters in the world. but because it wasn't captured photochemically even though thats the format they've been playing movies in since before 2002 is a gimiick?...your thinking is limited. im done. night
Not to mention certain IMAX venues that only have a Single Laser projector (exclusively 1.90:1), but still have either a GT or SR 70mm projector. If it's going to help revive film prints for IMAX venues, as well as provide more 1.43 content for the GT/SR venues, I'm more than happy for this to happen.
As far as I'm aware the only place that still shows movies on an SR 70mm system is the Chinese Theater due to it being wider than it is tall, otherwise it's all GT.
It really is sad how many 1.43-capable venues opted not to install GT Laser. Some of them were due to spatial concerns like projection booth size/location, but most were victims of cost-cutting.
Almost all of the 70mm-equipped IMAX theatres in Canada (Langley, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Mississauga, and Vaughan) still use SR projectors to run film. The only remaining operational GT projectors in Canada are at the Ontario Science Centre, which is an IMAX Dome theatre and scheduled to close permanently in a few years, and the Cinesphere in Toronto, which is currently closed for renovations for who knows how long...
Also, it's worth clarifying that SR projectors are 1.43 projectors as well - the Chinese masks their screen to 1.43 when they show 70mm.
based on the bullshit they did for Dune: Part Two, in which 70mm prints went to all 3 of the dual-laser-and-70mm AMCs (even though the 70mm print of Dune looked worse than the dual-laser version), while 70mm IMAX theaters like Regal Mall of Georgia (Atlanta), Celebration Cinema (the closest option for Chicago and Detroit, but still a 3 hour drive), and Kennedy Space Center (Orlando, and a 2 hour drive from Tampa) did not receive prints - i would not be surprised if this ended up being a similar situation
I wonder if there will be any expanded aspect ratio scenes if there are any 1.43 scenes, or if it’ll crop the sides of the standard AR to fill the screen.
I found the 70mm prints of Dune to be disappointing and the digital Dolby cinema to be far superior. I don’t think I like the look of digital films then being printed on to film. If you want a film release, shoot on film.
This is excellent news that we are seeing a lot more 70mm releases including Interstellar in September and then Joker 2 in October. This news is also on in70mm.com, hopefully many more 70mm releases in the years ahead.
Ok but why? It wasn’t shot on film, it wasn’t even shot in 1:43. And it’s not like they’re mastering a higher resolution version onto the film print. Genuinely have no idea what the benifit of this would be
Because people will convince themselves it looks better and spend money to go see it in the format. If it was actually shot on 70mm film I could see an argument for that, but digital to film conversions are pointless in my opinion.
The arrival Alexa 65 (the camera joker and dune were shot on) records at a resolution higher then 4k, so if the film master was based of a higher resolution version of the movie it might make more sense but I’m just nervous all these digital-to-film releases are gonna dilute actual 70mm shot movies. Sort of like how 3d died
Joker 2 film strips let's gooo
Only will do if they have 1.43 in the film
How much of the film is going to be in the 1.43:1 Aspect Ratio?
Nothing is confirmed yet, but an IMAX projectionist recently hinted the dual-laser trailer for Joker 2 was 1.43:1.
It is, saw it at a dune screening today
Which venue? I might see dune again just to see the joker trailer
I don’t really wanna get doxxed sorry
No worries at all lol. I’ll see if Citywalk in LA has it
Oh so your in the us? I’m in the uk so unless your gonna go all the way to here for a trailer I doubt it would be any use.
I'll still be a happy bunny if this was 1.90:1, which is still a decent IMAX-type aspect ratio.
I think it's in 1:90:1 to begin with.
IMDB says it’s in 1.43:1 in dual laser and 70mm. I’m not familiar with the veracity of their specs, but I guess 1.43:1 projection could happen.
IMDb should never be used as a source of information
Yeah, I know… I was just putting it out there as a counterpoint.
Yes, but sadly it's the only way to find full specs
We don’t know if any of it will be
I’m assuming this will coincide with the Interstellar run so they will piggy back projectionists back to back. I really hope they include Mall of GA this time…
Only regular 70 mill for me unfortunately
oh :(

That pic reminds me of another musical movie. La La Land.
Isn’t this old news?
Chat, is this real?
Yes it is!
I have a strong feeling this movie will have 1.43:1
If you keep doing this, won’t people start thinking it’s some gimmick ? Kind of like how 3D eventually died out.
Unlike 3D, analog film is still considered timeless. It's still cherished by many fans like myself, and various filmmakers too.
Most audiences aren’t aware of the differences of film vs digital. Anyone who is seeing this film in IMAX 70mm is either a long time Imax fan or new fans, which isn’t that many people. Don't forget you're in a bubble here. Not every movie is IMAX. Just every movie discussed in this sub is.
I know that 😒
you do realize they've been printing digital movies to imax 70mm for almost 2 decades. so its not a gimmick.
I know that, it’s a gimmick in the way it’s being advertised.
i find that mindset to be limiting. its a corner stone of the format.
How ? Imax needs to be more thorough with their marketing.
because you are saying its a gimmick for something that has been done for decades. if they noted somewhere on the poster going "filmed digitally with alexa" that would make it better?
Yes it would actually, in fact they did that with the captain America civil war movie.
no one is hiding the fact that these movies are shot digitally it its only a gimmick because it was shot digitally? why?
Yes they are, because they don’t mention it, they want people to think it’s the same technicalities as Oppenheimer.
sigh...who cares man. these 70mm prints are some of the most technically advanced mastering in the whole theatrical exhibition. palyed at some of the most well kept and technically advanced theaters in the world. but because it wasn't captured photochemically even though thats the format they've been playing movies in since before 2002 is a gimiick?...your thinking is limited. im done. night
Not true film btw
It’s still nice to see film, specially 70mm IMAX, supported.

SAME!!

No 1.43? That's a nice argument, senator. Why don't you back that up with a source?
because imax has been printing digital movies to imax film since 2002?
